Earnhardt Jr. leads wreck-marred opening practice.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- It took all of 10 minutes into Friday's opening Sprint Cup Series practice before the "big one" occurred at Daytona International Speedway.

Video replay showed contact between Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch triggered a 10-car accident that relegated eight drivers to backup cars for Sunday night's Coke Zero 400, including three of the four Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas.

Busch, his JGR teammates Carl Edwards and Denny Hamlin, Chevrolet drivers Martin Truex Jr., Jamie McMurray and Ryan Newman and Ford drivers Trevor Bayne and Sam Hornish Jr. all had to switch to backup cars.

Toyota: NSCS Daytona Practice notes
Kyle Busch is not happy with Brad Keselowski
KYLE BUSCH,
No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
As you watch the replay, what happened in the accident?
“Just looks like the 2 (Brad Keselowski) got into my left rear and he got away unscathed and trashed everybody else’s stuff.”

How frustrating is it to wreck this early in practice?
“It’s frustrating and it’s not at all what these guys pour all their blood, sweat and tears into. We wreck in practice and that’s not very smart.”

What did you feel from the driver’s seat in the accident?
“I guess the 2 (Brad Keselowski) got into my left rear and just spun us around. All these guys at the shop and everybody, they work way too hard building race cars in general to be wrecking them in practice. There’s room to lift and sometimes people don’t.”

Louder F1 exhaust system gets green-light for 2016
Mercedes Mega-horn exhaust for 2016
Formula 1 cars will be louder in 2016 with the introduction of a revised exhaust system, the FIA confirmed on Thursday following Wednesday's F1 Strategy Group meeting.

Sound, in particular the volume, was a major talking point during the 2014 season when the new hybrid-turbo V6 engines were introduced. Whilst calls for louder cars has grown quieter this season, some are still unhappy with the noise level.

Therefore a new exhaust specification will be implemented for the 2016 season.

GP2: Sirotkin soars to Silverstone pole
Sergey Sirotkin defied his lack of experience at the Silverstone circuit by claiming pole position for tomorrow's feature race on his first visit to the track, setting two laps quick enough to take the top spot and denying McLaren tester Stoffel Vandoorne and an impressively quick Richie Stanaway the glory in this afternoon's qualifying session.

The Russian stopped the clocks at 1:39.949 on his final lap, marginally improving his earlier time to solidify his first GP2 pole position as Vandoorne pushed too hard in pursuit, running slightly wide at Becketts as the clock rolled down to zero, while Stanaway pipped Alexander Rossi on his last lap for P3.

GP2: Haryanto leads the way in Silverstone
Rio Haryanto
Rio Haryanto's good form has carried over to Silverstone where the Indonesian topped the timesheets in this morning's free practice session, leading the way ahead of Williams test driver Alex Lynn and McLaren tester (and points leader) Stoffel Vandoorne by less than a tenth.

The Indonesian driver stopped the clock with a time of 1:40.659, half a second quicker that Raffaele Marciello's best time in this session last year, a third of the way through the session on a clear track when most of his rivals had returned to the pits for fresh tires and, despite having plenty of time left, they were unable to match his time.

British GP: The Mercedes parade begins in practice 1
Rosberg fastest but Hamilton sandbagging
Despite missing most of the session due to loss of hydraulic pressure, Nico Rosberg turned the fastest lap in opening practice for the British GP at Silverstone ahead of his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton, fastest early in the session, was instructed to sandbag the 2nd half by his team over the radio and to keep his lap times in the 1m38s range.

And even with that the two Mercedes drivers were comfortably ahead of everyone else. Max Verstappen was third fastest but over 1-second a lap slower and out to lunch.

MAVTV500 was a big boost for IndyCar UPDATE A reader writes, Dear AutoRacing1.com, I am a big NASCAR fan. I loved the Fontana race, much better than the boring NASCAR 'pack' races and the parades F1 puts on.  Too bad the race wasn't on ABC.  Hardly anyone saw it. As for the Chevy drivers whining that the racing was too close for them, IndyCar should make them all wear Depends in case they wet their pants. Mary Donovan, Pittsburgh

FIA, FOM and teams plan revamped F1 cars for 2017
The Strategy Group met yesterday in Biggin Hill, as planned, to follow up on the package of measures proposed at the last meeting and assess new directions for the future of Formula 1. It was a very constructive meeting, which led to approval of important decision and innovative evolutions.

Increased restrictions on driver aids and coaching received unanimous support and will be rapidly implemented, starting from this year’s Belgian Grand Prix - with a particular emphasis on race starts - and in 2016. These measures will bring back the driver in full control of the car, enhancing races excitement and unpredictability.

F1 now determined to prevent 'major crisis'
Max Mosley lays it on the line
(GMM)  F1 is working hard to speed away from its current predicament.

Former FIA president Max Mosley told the Telegraph: "If Formula one continues on its current path, it is headed for a major crisis."

Most of the sport's stakeholders agree, so it was no surprise that after a lengthy meeting of the Strategy Group at Biggin Hill, further measures have now been announced.

And so pressing is the apparent need for change that F1 will no longer wait until 2017 -- or even 2016.

Mosley warns of F1 crisis
Mosley calls for major budget cuts in F1
With team budgets hitting £158 million, the sport is becoming unsustainable for many teams. The 2014 season saw the end of Caterham, while Marussia also looked set to leave F1 before being resurrected in the form of Manor Marussia.

However, there remain a number of teams that are teetering on the edge of financial disaster, and Mosley feels that action needs to be taken to avoid losing more teams.

"There are no two ways about it, if Formula One continues on its current path, it is headed for a major crisis," Mosley wrote in the Daily Telegraph.

Strike means Sauber late to Silverstone
(GMM) Sauber mechanics are working overtime in the Silverstone pits on Thursday.

That is because, as of 6am, the Swiss team's trucks carrying the cars for Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson had yet to arrive at the British grand prix venue.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports that Sauber left Hinwil on time, but got held up in France during a Eurotunnel strike and blockade.

The transporters diverted, but got caught up in a four kilometer traffic jam, meaning mechanics are now racing against time to prepare the Ferrari-powered cars.

Meanwhile, team manager Beat Zehnder has hit out at some of the proposals put forward by the Strategy Group to spice up F1's future.

NBCSN Introduces new post-race show for NASCAR, not IndyCar
It's clear NBCSN could care less about IndyCar now that they have NASCAR. Following NBC's Sunday night coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coke Zero 400, NBCSN will debut NASCAR Victory Lap, a new weekly one-hour NASCAR program recapping the biggest moments of each weekend's Sprint Cup Series and XFINITY Series races on NBC and NBCSN. This was never considered for F1 and IndyCar because they are considered time slot fillers for NBCSN, not true partners.

NASCAR Victory Lap is scheduled to air Sundays at 11:00pm/et on NBCSN, through the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship at Homestead. NASCAR Victory Lap, hosted by Carolyn Manno with analyst and current NASCAR driver Brian Vickers, will serve as a destination for NASCAR fans each Sunday night, utilizing highlights from NBC and NBCSN's race coverage, scanner audio from the teams, and post-race interviews and commentary to provide a comprehensive look back at the most compelling stories from each race weekend. In addition, the program will also feature exclusive interviews with the winner of the Sprint Cup Series race from NBC Sports' trackside studio.

NASCAR sees Fortune 500 involvement increase
"NASCAR's success comes because their cars are as low-tech as possible. Instead of wasting money on technology in the cars, NASCAR uses technology in smarter ways to grow their fan base. Driving a car with no technology aids takes skill, hence NASCAR is truly a sport. F1 is won by the engineers behind computer screens. Engineering is not a sport, hence F1 is not a sport." -- AR1 President Mark Cipolloni

For the third consecutive year, the number of Fortune 500 companies utilizing NASCAR as part of their marketing mix has increased. In fact, nearly half of America's Fortune 100 companies invest with NASCAR to help drive their business and more than one in four Fortune 500 companies are on board.

The new analysis, conducted and released by NASCAR on Wednesday, indicated a 7 percent increase in Fortune 500 corporate involvement since the 2014 study.

The 130 Fortune 500 companies now involved in the sport reflect a 20 percent increase since 2008.

Now, investment is back in a big way, led by high tech involvement in the sport.

- TV ratings flat, digital metrics expanding

- Acknowledged that 2016 schedule will end depending on when it begins. That of course means possibly going past Labor Day, although Miles continued to acknowledge that wasn't ideal from a TV standpoint.

Video: Daly on Fontana - says it was the best race he ever saw (2nd Update) UPDATE #2
Cockpit canopies, at least on the superspeedways, are the answer to safe 'pack racing' for IndyCars
Even though the attendance did not show it, the attention paid to Saturday's race proved that's what fans want to watch. It's never going to be safe; racing just isn't that way. Daly's video below is spot-on.

But finding a balance between daredevil racing and over-the-top danger is a challenge IndyCar must unravel. There is a solution.

They can start with cockpit canopies on the 2018 car as I have recommended for years, at least for the Superspeedway races. Mark C./AutoRacing1.com

07/01/15 Dear AR1.com, I could not have said it better if I tried. Derek Daly hit the nail on the head. All these whiney people in the IndyCar paddock should find another job, including the irresponsible journalists. Racing will always be dangerous. Always has been always will be.  We used to lose drivers every week back in my day. Now we lose one every five years or so and everyone gets their panties in a knot. Sure it would be nice if no one dies, but when you are going over 200 mph in an open wheel car people will sometimes die.  NASCAR driver Jason Leffler died at Bridgeport NJ a few years back in an open wheel sprint car going perhaps 100 mph.  Was that pack racing? Nope. Repeat after me - "racing is dangerous," "racing is dangerous." Jonathan Birdsall

Video: Why Fontana wasn't as dangerous as 'Pack Racing' in the past
In this video Derek Daly explains the current IndyCar back in 2012 when it was launched. Towards the end of the video explains why pack racing is much safer for IndyCars now than it was back in 2011 when Dan Wheldon was killed in Las Vegas. Bottom line, the cars still need canopies to be really safe in pack racing situations, but as Daly explains, the underbody of the current car sticks out of the sides of the cars to minimize side tire-to-tire contact and wheel interlocking, and they have Butt Bumpers to prevent cars from riding up and over another from behind. To compare Fontana 2015 to Las Vegas 2011 is an injustice to what a great race Fontana was and what a great job the drivers did.
