Following NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES driver Austin Dillon's accident Sunday night at Daytona International Speedway that sent his No. 3 Chevrolet airborne, FOX NASCAR analysts Darrell Waltrip, Larry McReynolds and Jeff Hammond shared their thoughts on the accident and safety in restrictor-plate races:

MCREYNOLDS ON HIS INITIAL REACTION WHILE WATCHING THE ACCIDENT UNFOLD:

"Every bit of that accident scared me, from the way the car got up in the air to how quickly the fence stopped it when the car was probably running 190 mph or more coming out of the tri-oval, and then hitting the fence at a dead stop a short distance later. But what frightened me the most was when Brad Keselowski hit the No. 3 car because Austin was sitting on the track at a dead stop and got slammed."

Move to Sunday night causes drop in Coke Zero attendance

Chitwood "is one of the most likable and charismatic executives in professional sports, but even he can't convincingly sell this."

Ryan Newman: 'NASCAR got what they wanted'
UPDATE Austin Dillon sustained a bruised tailbone and forearm, according to ESPN's Bob Pockrass. Among those hurt in the crowd, four received treatment at the track, one was hospitalized with minor injuries and eight declined medical attention, International Speedway president Joie Chitwood III confirmed.

"It's not really acceptable, I don't think," Dillon told reporters after being examined at the care center. "We've got to figure out something. Our speeds are too high, I think. I think everybody could get good racing with slower speeds. We can work at that, and then figure out a way to keep the cars on the ground. That's the next thing. We're fighting hard to make the racing good. I hope the fans appreciate that. We don't, but it's our job. You go out there and hold it wide open to the end and hope you make it through."

Block wins GRC MCAS New River
Ken Block has won two of the first 4 Red Bull Global Rallycross events of 105.
Ken Block took a thrilling victory in Sunday’s inaugural Red Bull Global Rallycross MCAS New River, the fourth race of the 2015 Red Bull GRC season. Block, who also won the season opener in Fort Lauderdale, held off the rest of the 10-car field for the victory.

“I’m very lucky to have two out of four wins,” Block said. “Today was crazy up and down, so I’m really lucky to be here on top. I’d like to say thanks to everyone who came out—it was great to see everybody and sign autographs last night, and it’s great interacting with the military.”

The event, which marked the first time that a racing series has ever competed on an active military base, saw the largest course in Red Bull GRC history at .993 miles. The seven-turn layout produced one of the most compelling events in series history, with ten different drivers winning the ten heats contested over the Supercar and GRC Lites classes.

Kyle Busch
Kyle Busch
KYLE BUSCH,
No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Is it harder to race in the heat at Daytona or win on the road course at Sonoma last week?
"I think everything in its own way is its own challenge. Certainly last week was a tremendous opportunity for us in our No. 18 M&M's Crispy Toyota to get to victory lane. That was so awesome to have that and to feel that feeling again of getting to victory lane. That was pretty special and to do it as fast as we did I guess, obviously being back for five or six races, whatever it was – was pretty special too. Look forward to this weekend and getting back here to Daytona. Just kind of being able to get back out there on the race track and of course have the opportunity to be back and to race this weekend. Certainly, didn't last long for things to turn bad again, but that's behind us and we move on. Look forward to hopefully being able to run the full 400 miles here tomorrow night and try to stay unscathed in order to just have a good, solid finish."

Q and A with Jeff Gordon
Jeff Gordon
Jeff Gordon
JEFF GORDON, NO. 24 AXALTA CHEVROLET SS met with media and discussed his final race behind the wheel at Daytona, the drivers council, track safety enhancements, and more.

THIS IS YOUR FINAL RUN AT DAYTONA. TALK ABOUT THAT

“Yeah, definitely. This track is extremely special to me. Of course we all know how much this track means to our sport. And I’m pretty bummed that it (qualifying) rained out. We were on a heck of a streak this year, with two poles on the superspeedways. I wanted to keep that going and I felt like yesterday our car had some really good speed and that we had a shot at doing that. I’ll start 24th. That’s not a bad place to start. So, yeah, it’s hard for me to really put all those thoughts and feelings into perspective, knowing that I have half the season still to go. I don’t think it’s really going to hit me until we get further down into the final part of the season, but this place has meant a lot. It’s going to be tough not coming back here and being behind the wheel. But I’m also really excited about calling this race next February.”

ISC Statement on Daytona Safety
Statement from International Speedway Corporation (ISC) President John Saunders: "Following February and the completion of Speedweeks in Daytona, International Speedway Corporation, in conjunction with NASCAR, initiated a thorough review and audit of impact-absorbing technologies at our properties. Based on those findings, ISC will install approximately 54,000 linear feet of additional SAFER Barrier at its facilities.

From now through the end of 2016, ISC will work with Cheaha Construction, Smith Fence Company, and North Industrial Machine, all certified organizations with the University of Nebraska, on this installation. As safety remains at the forefront, ISC will continue to work with NASCAR to evaluate specific locations inside the turns for future safety enhancements." ISC

GP2: Haryanto flies to sprint victory

Rio Haryanto crushed the competition in this morning's sprint race in Silverstone: leading from lights to flag the Indonesian was never troubled as he claimed his third victory of the season, ahead of Raffaele Marciello and Red Bull tester Pierre Gasly.

Haryanto got away well from pole when the lights went out, leaving a slow starting Nick Yelloly to deal with their pursuers. Marciello made an even better getaway to slot in front of the Briton, while Alex Lynn made a similarly sharp start but gave teammate Gasly just enough room on the outside of turn one, which he converted to the inside to run ahead out of turn two.

Toto Wolff
(GMM)  Even dominant Mercedes might be willing to facilitate change amid F1's so-called 'crisis'.

Many believe the biggest problem is that while the German marque has utterly mastered the new 'power unit' era, the cost-limiting development 'freeze' will prevent struggling Renault and Honda from ever catching up.

Bernie Ecclestone has reportedly proposed that, to fix the problem, an upper 'horse power cap' could now be set.

And Mercedes - although with the most to lose - may be willing to play along.

GP2: Sirotkin over Rossi at Silverstone
From left, Alexander Rossi (Racing Engineering), Sergey Sirotkin (Rapax), Stoffel Vandoorne (ART Grand Prix)
Sergey Sirotkin has claimed his maiden GP2 victory in emphatic fashion, blowing away his rivals with an impressive display of speed and nerve to reclaim the lead and power his way to the win, six seconds to the good from Alexander Rossi and series leader Stoffel Vandoorne.

The Russian made a slow getaway from pole: the Belgian got away better from second but Richie Stanaway got away even better from third, splitting the pair to lead into turn one, while behind them Rossi went wide and a fast starting Nobuharu Matsushita went even wider to claim P3 between Sirotkin and Vandoorne.

A brief safety car period for an incident between Artem Markelov and Nathanael Berthon gave the Russian the chance he was looking for: as the race went live he mugged Stanaway into the final corner, handing the Japanese driver a clean line through too while Rossi sat on Vandoorne’s rear wing and waited for his moment to shine.

Racing interest hasn't faded for Grand Prix of Cleveland
At one time the crowds were big in Cleveland but the race was always run in hot humid weather and eventually the fans stopped coming. At the same time Tony George's 'vision' for IndyCar racing was destroying the sport like a cancer.
Mark Cipolloni 2001 Photo
Just say "Grand Prix of Cleveland" and auto racing fans - both local and afar - can hear the roar of the engines.

It has been eight years since the open wheel cars were speeding around the 10-turn 2.106-mile temporary circuit at Burke Lakefront Airport. One would think hopes of reviving what was once a 25-year summer staple on July 4th weekend in Cleveland would have faded by now. That is not the case.

"IndyCar fans have been clamoring for a return to Cleveland and the racy runways of Burke Lakefront Airport and, suddenly, there appears to be hope," Robin Miller wrote in the March 31, 2015 edition of Racer Magazine.

That hope, at least for 2016, has now come and gone. But make no mistake, unlike the past, a return to Cleveland is beyond idle talk.

Goodyear confident of new Darlington tire
