Shareholder says Ecclestone drove hard bargain over F1 sale
Ecclestone drove a hard bargain, which is perfectly legal
Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone persuaded private equity fund CVC to double its initial valuation when it was buying a stake in the motor racing business, CVC's co-chairman told a German court on Wednesday.

Ecclestone, 83, is on trial for bribery, accused of channeling $44 million to a German banker in return for smoothing the sale to CVC which became the largest shareholder in Formula One in 2006.

Ecclestone, who denies wrongdoing, could face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty and a conviction would end his long grip on a business he helped to create. The prosecution alleges that Ecclestone wanted CVC to take control as it meant he could stay on as chief executive.

Lewis Hamilton tests at Silverstone today
Lewis Hamilton on his way to victory Sunday at Silverstone.
Silverstone Test - Day Two

Date    Wednesday 09 July
Track    Silverstone International Circuit
Driver    Lewis Hamilton
# of Laps  47 laps
Best Lap Time  1:36.680
Kilometres Covered  277 km
Track Length  5.891 km
Weather  Clear, windy, dry, mild

MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS concluded the third in-season test of 2014 at the Silverstone International Circuit today, with Lewis Hamilton taking the wheel of the F1 W05 Hybrid for the second of two days' running this week. Lewis' best time of 1:36.680 from 47 laps put him fifth on the time sheets.

Today's programme focused on car setup, aero development testing and data collection, as well as engine settings. Lewis emerged for his first run at 09:05 local time, completing 47 laps by the end of the day. A spin out on track for Lewis caused an early red flag after running with colder tyres from several slower aero evaluation laps. The team changed the engine on Lewis' car after an initial run in the morning, meaning we didn't get as much track time as we hoped today. Mercedes-Benz Power Units today completed a total of 1,355 km between all teams.

Busch's team gets penalized by NASCAR
A NASCAR statement said "the Delta (or difference) of the Z-height measurement between the centre of the panhard bar mounting bolt located at the left truck trailing arm and the centre of the panhard bar mounting bolt, located at the right rear sub-frame mounting bracket, exceeded the maximum of three inches", a maximum that is imposed for the restrictor-plate races at Daytona and Talladega.

Both Busch and car owner Gene Haas have lost 10 championship points, while Busch's crew chief Daniel Knost has been fined $10,000.

NASCAR ranked the infringement at 'P2' in its P1-P6 escalating scale of severity for technical infractions, but also issued the penalty under the "actions detrimental to stock car racing" category.

The points deduction moves Busch back from 24th to 26th in the drivers' standings, but he is still currently in line for a Chase slot by virtue of his win at Martinsville in March.

Daniil Kvyat fastest as Lotus tests low-profile Pirellis
Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat set the pace on the second morning of in-season testing at Silverstone, although the focus was on Pirelli's low-profile tire test with Lotus.

The Lotus was wheeled out into the pit lane for initial photos shortly after the start of the session before re-emerging an hour later to put the first miles on the new 18-inch tires. The tires are very much a concept rather than a developed racing product and it was no surprise to see the Lotus nine seconds off the pace by lunch time. However, if the new look captures the imagination of F1 fans and teams, Pirelli is willing to fully develop low-profile tires for 2017.

The Woking-based marque, however, are still considerably off the pace of not just the dominant team this season in Mercedes, but also the likes of Red Bull and Williams.

Things are about to get very interesting in NASCARVille
On the surface it's a simple working group comprised of elite NASCAR teams pulling in the same direction for the overall good of the sport. Hendrick Motorsports, Team Penske, Roush Fenway Racing, Richard Childress Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing, Stewart-Haas Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports and Michael Waltrip Racing have formed a Race Team Alliance to collaborate on common interests, explore cost efficiencies and cooperate on other business issues affecting the long-term health of the sport.

And of course there were the kumbaya platitudes for all to see in order to prove it too: "The teams have met in various forms and forums over the years to explore areas of common interest," said Rob Kaufman, co-owner of Michael Waltrip Racing and the leader of the new group. "This simply formalizes what was an informal group. We all have vested interests in the success and popularity of stock car racing."

IndyCar to re-think penalty system
IndyCar's competition boss Derrick Walker expects to make changes to the series' procedures for investigating post-race penalties following its recent about-face on sanctions issued against Sebastien Bourdais according to Autosport.

Bourdais was fined $10,000 and placed on probation for the remainder of the 2014 season after being deemed responsible for his collision with Justin Wilson at Texas last month, only for the punishment to be completely rescinded two weeks later due to insufficient evidence.

Speaking to AUTOSPORT about the chain of events that led to Bourdais being cleared, Walker said that he anticipates making changes to the way that evidence is reviewed in future.

Longtime IndyCar team owner and AR1 reader Dale Coyne turns 60 today. Coyne was born July 8, 1954 in Minooka, IL. His team is based in nearby Plainfield.

Recently, Coyne's team gave him something of an early birthday present, when rookie Carlos Huertas captured the checkered flag in Race 1 of the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston. It was the fourth Indy car win for Dale Coyne Racing, making DCR one of three IndyCar teams to have scored wins in the last three seasons.

But on Wednesday at the Silverstone test, Lotus test driver Charles Pic will be in charge of a prototype Pirelli 18-inch tire.

Scary article on kids and cars
A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, excellent article on Kids don't care about cars anymore.  No wonder attendance and TV ratings are down pretty much across the board.  When are the people running this sport going to take their heads out of the sand and do something about it.  I think you are right, the only solution is to get go-kart racing on par with other stick-and-ball sports in schools in this country. Go-karts, if mass produced to a spec for all schools can be had for a very low cost.  I like your idea of parking lot races in high school and college with each school hosting events in a rotating fashion.  Who is going to get this off the ground?  Joe Beeber

Dear Joe, Good question. It's going to take a concerted effort.  Mark C.

Montoya cashes in on opportunity with Team Penske
Montoya gets service in front of large IndyCar oval track crowd
Before opening the latest chapter of his racing career, Juan Pablo Montoya said he wanted to be in a position to win races, and joining Team Penske for the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season provided that opportunity.

"I've been lucky enough that I've won in everything I've driven," said the 38-year-old Colombian, who competed and won in Indy car, Formula One and the NASCAR Cup Series. "If you're not in a winning car, there's no point. At this point in my career, I cannot waste my time."

Montoya has been a quick study in his return to Indy car racing, learning on the fly despite the Verizon IndyCar Series' diverse racetrack schedule and depth of competition. He placed fourth in the second event of the season at Long Beach, finished fifth in the 98th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race and recorded back-to-back podium finishes at Texas Motor Speedway and Race 1 at Houston in June.

After two months Chrysler SRT  restarts Viper Production
A few months ago, Chrysler announced that the SRT Viper will halt production for two months due to very poor demand, having moved only 91 units in the first two months of 2014. However, the manufacturer's Conner Avenue Assembly plant in Detroit has resumed production of the 2014 SRT Viper on June 23rd.

Even though SRT boss Ralph Gilles declared last November that production "could be increased starting next spring," Chrysler stated that some 756 unsold Vipers were sitting quietly in stock on March 1st, which translates to a whopping 412-day supply. The two-month halt also took its toll on the Conner Avenue Assembly, with no less than 91 hourly workers laid off.

'Hurdles' in way of Lotus' Mercedes move
(GMM)  Lotus' switch to Mercedes power for 2015 may be hitting a snag.

As recently as Sunday, the end of the struggling Enstone based team's Renault deal seemed a mere formality.

"I can't confirm it yet," Mercedes' Toto Wolff smiled to British television Sky at Silverstone.

It was believed the deal would be confirmed imminently.

"But there are hurdles on the way to a contract," Michael Schmidt, the respected correspondent for Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, reports.

"Lotus is bound to Renault in the medium term.  And the French do not want to release their customer from its obligations so easily," he explained, adding that the potential loss of revenue to Renault is at least EUR 20 million.

Authorities close to finding Schu medical record thief

On Monday, the French newspaper Le Dauphine Libere claims investigators have tracked the internet IP address of whoever sent by email an offer to media agencies to sell the information about Schumacher's health for EUR 50,000.

The IP address is reportedly linked to a Swiss helicopter company.

Although Schumacher was transferred by road between Grenoble and Lausanne recently, the hospital initially contacted a Swiss helicopter company.

The company was apparently sent medical information about Schumacher that would have aided the potential helicopter transfer.

NASCAR Explains Why Race Was Called
The day was only half over but the race was finished. NASCAR's decision to call Sunday's Coke Zero 400 at about 3:00pm/et left some competitors and fans perplexed. The decision ended NASCAR's weekend battle with showers, which caused a multi-car crash during Nationwide qualifying on Friday and forced Saturday night's Cup race to be moved to Sunday. Rain twice delayed Sunday's race before it was called after 112 of 160 laps. Aric Almirola was declared the winner. With a forecast from the National Weather Service calling for the likelihood of rain until about 8:00pm/et and the race past halfway - a day after it was scheduled to run - it tipped the scales for NASCAR to call the race.

Medical Update on Jack Hawksworth: "Jack has been diagnosed with a myocardial contusion following the incident during the second practice session yesterday July 5th. He has not been medically cleared to compete in today’s Pocono 500 event. He currently remains under observation at Lehigh Valley Heath Network in Allentown, Pa. Jack is in good spirits and eager to return to the cockpit of the Integrity Energy Drink #98 as quickly as possible."

With no additional practice sessions the team has decided it is not feasible to run a substitute driver for today’s Pocono IndyCar 500. Work is well under way to prepare the team’s second car for next weekend’s Iowa Corn Indy 300 and Jack Hawksworth is expected to be cleared to compete for next weekend’s event.

Montoya expects to be back in IndyCar in 2015
AR1.com asked Juan Montoya after his win in the Pocono 500 if he feels like he is back where he belongs in opening wheel racing.  "For sure," said Montoya.  "I told Roger I would run a few NASCAR races but this is where I want to be and I expect to be back in IndyCar next year."

All of Penske's drivers are on a one year contract according to AR1.com sources, so it looks like Juan will be back.  We'll track the other two, Power and Castroneves, as the season progresses.

26 cars in 2nd crash of Coke Zero 400 wreckfest
16 cars were wrecked on lap 19. A second major pileup that involved 26 cars slowed the Coke Zero 400 on Sunday afternoon, forcing the second red flag of the day at Daytona International Speedway.

Three cars tangled near the front of the pack at the end of the backstretch, snagging multiple cars in the smoky mess and turning the No. 18 Toyota of Kyle Busch onto its roof. The melee caused a stoppage with 98 of a scheduled 160 laps complete.

Contact between cars driven by Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne hooked the No. 22 Ford of Joey Logano heading to Turn 3, blocking the 2.5-mile track. By the time the tally of cars involved hit 26, very few lead-lap cars were remaining to contend for the win.

Massive early wreck slows Coke Zero 400
A massive early 16-car crash has slowed an already delayed start to the Coke Zero 400, knocking out several heavy favorites at Daytona International Speedway.

The multi-car wreck as the field came to complete the 20th of 160 scheduled laps for a NASCAR-mandated competition caution. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s No. 17 Ford got loose off Turn 4 then made contact with the No. 24 Chevy of Jeff Gordon and the No. 14 Chevrolet of Tony Stewart heading to the start-finish line, blocking the track and snaring many contending cars in their wake.

Sunday update from Pocono
Under perfectly blue skies about 20-25K fans have shown up for the Pocono 500 IndyCar race, down from an estimated 30-35K in 2013.  IndyCar will have to reduce their sanctioning fee or this race will go away.

There is a fairly strong tailwind down the front straight which will cause the drivers to have to shift between 4th, 5th and 6th gear down the straight and downshift back to 4th in Turn .  They use the gears depends on wind, whether they are slingshotting another car, or if they are saving fuel.

The wind caused some drivers to run out of gear by pushing (tail wind) the car down the straight on Saturday, but if it comes in gusts it makes the car very unstable in the turns.

NASCAR could tweak qualifying rules at plate tracks
That strange qualifying session at Daytona International Speedway might end up being a one-time thing. NASCAR executive Robin Pemberton said rules could be tweaked to prevent teams from trying to scheme ways to post the fastest laps during the three knockout stages. "I think we'll learn from all of this moving forward and continue to talk and see if there's anything that we need to look at to try to make things better for the fans and better for the competitors," said Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president of competition.

Alonso admits defeat
It's not a happy time in the Ferrari transporters
Admitting defeat, Fernando Alonso says he has given up hope of fighting for this year's Formula 1 world title.

The Ferrari driver made his comments after being knocked out of Q1 at Silverstone on Saturday afternoon, with changeable track conditions catching him, team-mate Kimi Raikkonen and the Williams drivers out.

Alonso, due to start tomorrow's race from 17th position after Esteban Gutierrez’s grid penalty, expressed his belief that only Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton are involved in the battle.

Rosberg failure blows F1 championship wide open
Lewis Hamilton gets  big break
(GMM)  Lewis Hamilton is right back in the game, as his championship deficit shrinks from 29 points to just 4 with a popular home win at Silverstone.

Mercedes team chairman Niki Lauda, however, was furious that many might not have bothered to wait hours for the checkered flag, following a lengthy delay.

It took an hour for circuit workers to replace damaged Armco barriers after an early crash involving Kimi Raikkonen, who limped from his destroyed Ferrari into the medical car.

"Ridiculous," said Lauda.  "The chances of it happening again are zero.

"They take care of every little detail and a lot of people will switch the television off."

Raikkonen was not seriously injured, having later been spotted comfortably walking to a golden Ferrari road car as he departed the British grand prix venue.

"He seems ok," the Maranello team confirmed, with teams sources reporting nothing more than a bruised ankle for the Finn.

More than just ok, however, is Hamilton, whose mood on Saturday had dropped to an all-time low when he decided to abandon the potential pole lap.

But he was bearing down on Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg during the race before sweeping into the lead when the sister silver car ground to a halt with a gearbox problem.

"I don't want to see a teammate fail," happy Hamilton said after delivering a home win for the Silverstone crowd, "but I really needed this result."

Rosberg, though, said the Brackley based team has work to do.

"Our car is totally dominant," he told German television RTL, "but reliability is also very important."

But team boss Toto Wolff said Hamilton cannot be begrudged a full celebration, with the 2008 world champion having earlier been the victim of technical trouble.

"Today was Lewis' day," he said, "and it blows the championship wide open.

"We will let them race all season no matter what."

Lauda denies Ferrari poaching top engineers
(GMM)  Niki Lauda has promptly played down suggestions dominant Mercedes is bleeding engineers to Ferrari.

Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that a couple of handfuls of engineers from rival teams have started work at Maranello, including a trio who previously worked on Mercedes' currently-dominant turbo V6 power unit.

But Mercedes team chairman Lauda insisted at Silverstone: "We have all the important engineers firmly under contract.

"They are staying," the great Austrian reiterated.  "We have long term contracts with our major engineers."

Raikkonen bruised but can drive
Kimi Raikkonen has bruises on his ankle and his knee but no broken bones, according to a Ferrari spokesman.

The 2007 World Champion crashed heavily at the start of Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Running wide at Loop, Raikkonen rejoined the action only to hit a bump that sent him crashing into the barriers just before the bridge.

The impact sent him spinning back across the track where he was tagged by Felipe Massa before hitting the barriers on the opposite side.

Nasr shines in Silverstone GP2 Sprint Race
Felipe Nasr
Felipe Nasr put in a peerless performance to claim victory in this morning's sprint race at Silverstone: the Brazilian was never headed as he left his rivals in his wake for a dominant win in cold but dry conditions ahead of Stefano Coletti and Johnny Cecotto.

The Williams test driver's victory was set up at the start with a sharp getaway from P2, easily dispatching poleman Stéphane Richelmi whose poor start saw him surrounded by countryman Coletti, who made a very good start indeed, and an equally rapid Cecotto, with Julian Leal also sneaking through at the first corner.

Hamilton decision is latest title blow
Lewis Hamilton "I am better than Rosberg"
(GMM)  As ever, it was Niki Lauda who delivered the bluntest assessment of Saturday's events at Silverstone.

"Lewis was wrong," said the F1 legend.  "It was his decision as he thought he could go no quicker.  Very simple."

Lauda, who is Mercedes' team chairman, is referring to how Hamilton aborted his final qualifying run at damp Silverstone, leaving him just sixth on the grid and likely to see his 29-point championship deficit blow out even further.

Championship leader and teammate Nico Rosberg, meanwhile, stuck with the program and stormed to a comfortable pole.

Coke Zero 400 washed out
Saturday's Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway was postponed by rain. The race is rescheduled for 11 a.m. ET on Sunday on TNT.

NASCAR officials made the decision shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday.

"We had a tough day with rain most of the day and from a radar perspective, it was popping up around us. We (didn't think) it was going to get this bad, this long," said Joie Chitwood III, president of Daytona International Speedway. "We worked with NASCAR as much as we could in terms of the timing. You reach a point right now where as it continues to rain, if we use an hour and 45 minutes to dry this track, which is a really short amount of time using Air Titan and the jets, typically we'd be well over two hours to dry the track. You start thinking about an 11 p.m. start which means you finish the event anywhere from 2 a.m. to a little bit later. You think about public safety, getting people home, all those things.

Chaves wins Lights Race
Gabby Chaves scores his fourth win of 2014.
The tense battle for Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires superiority between Gabby Chaves and Zach Veach continued with today's Pocono 100 at Pocono Raceway. Veach broke the points tie by claiming the pole position this morning for Andretti Autosport, but Chaves and Belardi Auto Racing played their trump cards during this afternoon's 40-lap race as the Colombian-American moved to the front on Lap 7 and never looked back.

Chaves' metronomic consistency with his #5 Marca Colombia/Coldeportes machine allowed him to inch clear of his rival with every lap on the 2.5-mile "Tricky Triangle" to score an emphatic victory - his fourth of the season from just eight races.

Good Morning from Pocono (Update 2) UPDATE #2
Juan Pablo Montoya has had reason to smile of late.
We caught up with the drivers from Team Penske just before lunchtime here at Pocono Raceway. Of course, Will Power is the current Verizon IndyCar Series point leader and teammate Helio Castroneves second. And after consecutive strong race weekends at Texas Motor Speedway and Houston, Juan Pablo Montoya is not fifth in the championship.

Let's start there with Montoya.

Given his strong form of late, I asked the Colombian if there was something that had changed or if he thought the better results were part of an overall progression. He emphasized the latter noting that he hadn't been in an open wheel car since 2006, and that he knew it was always going to take time.

Also, when asked whether there was any transferability between driving a stock car and Indy car at Pocono, Montoya essentially said none.

Evans storms to maiden GP2 victory
Mitch Evans has claimed his first GP2 win with a strong drive in damp conditions in this afternoon's feature race in Silverstone, recovering from a slow start with a mature performance to secure the victory from championship leader Jolyon Palmer and Stoffel Vandoorne.

In a strategic race Evans and his RT RUSSIAN TIME team out-thought their rivals, picking the right tires and package to be in the right place at the end, although it didn't start to plan: poleman Raffaele Marciello blasted off the line, with fellow front row starter Palmer doing enough to hold station. Evans made a weaker getaway but caught the Briton quickly, slipping by at turn 3 as Palmer slowed before getting underway again, just holding off a charging Felipe Nasr who mugged Vandoorne for P4, ahead of Stefano Coletti and Johnny Cecotto.

Kanaan fastest in opening IndyCar practice at Pocono
Tony Kanaan, who has struggled a bit this year appears to be back on track as he turned the fastest lap in opening practice for the Pocono 500 at 221.344 mph in very windy and tricky conditions.

Andretti teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay, Marco Andretti and James Hinchcliffe were 2nd, 3rd and 4th.  Marco lead Ryan most of the session but dropped to third at the end.  We saw a lot of drafting going on out there so we don't really know who is fastest.

Marco Andretti was easily the fastest car last year but poor fuel mileage was his undoing.

Dropping attendance is not confined to IndyCar
Even NASCAR has seen a huge drop in race attendance.  Tracks like Phoenix above had to remove huge grandstands to save face.
The Verizon IndyCar Series returned to Pocono Raceway last season for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century, with Scott Dixon winning the Pocono INDYCAR 400 in front of a disappointing crowd of 30-35,000 fans.

This week, Pocono CEO Brandon Igdalski told Associated Press sportswriter Dan Gelston that ticket sales for Sunday’s return engagement are down substantially from 2013, adding that he will speak to IndyCar CEO Mark Miles this weekend about pulling out of the final year of their three-year contract. Igdalsky said ticket sales for this year’s race were “kind of scary" when compared to last year, and would not guarantee a return of the IndyCar series to Pocono in 2015. Igdalsky said that if IndyCar does not return, “it's because the fans did not come out and support the event."
