Rahal says IndyCar has to find a way 'to make the world interested
Under CART in 2000 (and every year for that matter) this was the crowd at Fontana. Below is the crowd now after Tony George's vision destroyed CART
No other series in the world is scrutinized and compared to its predecessors as often as is the case with the Verizon IndyCar Series. A series that evolved from USAC to CART, suffered a split that added the Indy Racing League, then saw CART become Champ Car until finally reuniting to become IndyCar. Fans clamor for IndyCar to become what the peak was in CART in the mid-'90s, thirsting for relevancy, speed, variety and boldness.

Three-time CART champion and 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal has been a part of the American open-wheel evolution. The former driver-turned-team owner constantly raced among crowds that exceeded 150,000 each weekend. Those were the good-old days.

Marquez leads 1-2 for Repsol Honda in Germany
Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez has sealed a perfect weekend in Germany after his sixth victory in a row in Sachsenring, recording a new race lap record en route to victory, following his pole position record yesterday. Teammate Dani Pedrosa also had a strong race, fending off Championship leader Valentino Rossi to take a well-earned second place.

Marc and Dani both lost a position on the opening lap as Jorge Lorenzo made his way to the front. On lap four, Dani lost another position to Valentino and dropped down to 4th as Marc overtook Jorge into first. Once out front, Marc never looked back and began to open up a gap, recording a new lap record on lap ten with a time of 1’21.530 (beating Dani’s 2011 time of 1’21.846). On the following lap, Dani passed Jorge – after he’d lost a spot to Valentino – and took 3rd place and began to chase down the Italian. Dani passed Valentino on lap seventeen and tried to open a gap, but was unable to drop him. The two riders rode in tandem for several laps before Dani, with three laps remaining, set his fastest time (1’21.714) as he had one last push to secure second place.

OK crowd for IndyCar at Milwaukee
The start. A crowd of about 12,000, maybe 14,000 was in attendance
Kevin Healy, who is general manager of the Milwaukee IndyFest, spoke to the Business Journal serving greater Milwaukee sports business reporter Rich Kirchen and indicated that today’s crowd could be enough to save the race for 2016 and beyond.

In a brief follow-up with Healy, he termed the crowd “good” when asked by MotorSportsTalk, and observed the crowd from the press box. He also said there were a good number of people in the infield.

Andretti, however, was less than enthusiastic about today’s crowd number at first ask.

Oh, Canada! What a Win for Taylor Brothers
Dane Cameron (l to r) and Eric Curran, drivers of the Action Express Racing #31 Whelen Engineering/Team Fox Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype, spray champagne on Jordan and Ricky Taylor, drivers of the Wayne Taylor Racing #10 Konica Minolta Chevrolet Corvette
Richard Prince for GM
Jordan Taylor overtook late-race leader Dane Cameron to win the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix presented by Hawk Performance at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park by less than a half-second in the only appearance outside the U.S. for the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

Taylor co-drove the No. 10 Konica Minolta Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype with his brother, Ricky, for the Wayne Taylor Racing team owned by their father. Second was Cameron and co-driver Eric Curran in the No. 31 Whelen Action Express Corvette DP. Third was the Honda-powered Ligier Prototype of John Pew and Oswaldo Negri, Jr. It was the second win of the season for the Taylor brothers.

Curran and Cameron had a tire problem half an hour into the race, requiring a pit stop that through the team’s strategy off, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing until the end, when Cameron needed a splash of fuel to make it to the checkered flag.

Serralles wins Milwaukee Indy Lights Race
Felix Serralles
Passing on the slick and tricky Milwaukee Mile is supposed to be difficult, but don’t tell Grand Prix of Milwaukee winner Felix Serralles that. The Belardi Auto Racing rookie started his second Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tire oval race from the outside of the third row and was able to pass five cars on the way to his first Indy Lights victory. The bevy of passes by the Ponce, Puerto Rico native included a multiple lap side-by-side battle with RC Enerson for the lead of the race with only eleven laps remaining.

Antonio Felix da Costa takes his maiden DTM victory
Antonio Felix da Costa
Only three hours after his maiden pole position in the DTM, the first victory followed: in a dominant way, BMW driver Ant¢nio Félix da Costa drove from pole position to his first major success in the most popular international touring car series, an undisputed victory. The Portuguese, who is only in his second DTM season, had to wait for this moment for 17 races. In the first race on Saturday, he had already scored his first-ever DTM podium finish by coming home second. “I am really, really happy,” the buoyant winner said after the race. “We had a good strategy and my colleagues put on a lot of pressure from behind. I always tried to have a sufficient margin before the first corner, because that is a very good possibility to overtake. That worked out. My first victory is simply great!"

Boston has rich auto racing history
Hyde Park’s Readville Race Track kept up with the times by making a smooth transition from harness racing to auto racing in 1903.
Courtesy of the Boston Public Library, Leslie Jones Collection
A crowd of 90,000-plus is expected to pack New Hampshire Motor Speedway next Sunday for a big NASCAR stop, this one labeled the New Hampshire 301. In September 2016, Indy-style racing will take over the Seaport’s streets, the first of five grand prix events scheduled to be staged here over Labor Day weekend through 2020.

Suddenly, we’re gearheads, eager consumers of all things cam shafts, fuel injectors, rack-and-pinion steering, and muscle-bulging V-8s (not the veggie variety poured from a can). We are Boston and we are full-out pedal to the metal, some of us so besotted by all of it that miniature checkered flags flutter from the back windows of our street machines.

Midday update from Milwaukee
AR1 talked with Zach at Long Beach and he said that he was looking for an IndyCar ride this year. Then he made the decision to have his lower arm operated on which took him out for the season.  The Ohio native is here in Milwaukee with his wrist in a brace that he hopes to shed in the next week or two.  And the 20 year old is working on next year's ride.

Veach drove in the 2013 and 2014 Indy Lights series with Andretti Autosport.

I asked how he liked the one day practice, qualify, race.  "I am kinda an old soul.  I like having one day to practice and make changes and one day to test them before qualifying.  Then race on the 3rd day."

Good morning from Milwaukee
The MAVTV 500 continues to be a subject of discussion
It's about 9 a.m. local time at a hazy, humid Milwaukee Mile. The second Verizon IndyCar Series practice session is about to begin.

At 8 a.m. there was a closed-door drivers' meeting. How much of that meeting was about today and how much was about the race two weeks ago at Auto Club Speedway, we'd love to know.

Yesterday, we reported that a drivers' meeting took place in which the Fontana race was discussed. Without rehashing all the details, there was great dissension amongst the drivers in the aftermath of the MAVTV 500 over the style of racing. Critics such as Juan Pablo Montoya, Will Power, and Tony Kanaan equated the race to 'pack racing' and were very pointed in their comments.

We also know that after the meeting there was a heated discussion between

Positive response to NASCAR rules package at Kentucky
The drivers liked the new rules package
By every measurable category - including the eye test -the debut of NASCAR's low downforce rules package Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway was a whopping success. And this wasn't even the finished product. The Quaker State 400 was one of the best 1.5-mile track races in recent years and certainly the best at Kentucky, which had produced a series of snoozers in its four previous events. There were a track-record 22 green-flag passes for the lead - including one in the final 20 laps -- and overall green-flag passes more than doubled from last year's race (2,665 on Saturday vs. 1,147 in 2014). Drivers heaped praise on the package and fans on social media overflowed with positive feedback.

"I felt like a race car driver tonight," a grinning Carl Edwards said. "I could actually drive the car. I was steering and sliding -- I about wrecked a few times. I felt like I was doing something, not just sitting in line."

Dale Jr. Wrecks Danica
Dale Jr. dismisses Danica's whining
Danica Patrick's milestone 100th career Sprint Cup Series start didn't go so well.

Running 27th and on the lead lap just ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Lap 207 of Saturday night's Quaker State 400, Patrick appeared to slow ever so slightly before Earnhardt's No. 88 Chevy tagged her bumper and sent the No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet into the wall.

Patrick then spun down across the track and into the grass as Earnhardt Jr., who had been dealing with brake issues for much of the night, drove on.
Moments later, Patrick tapped Earnhardt's bumper on pit road to express her displeasure.

NASCAR Drivers Speak Out Against Adjustable Track Bar Device
Drivers want more technology taken out of the cars.
The first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race of the season using the new lower downforce competition package was deemed a universal success and a great first step moving forward.

The consensus from Day 1 was that the reduction in downforce needs to be followed by a soft tire, which will come to fruition in September at Darlington in the Southern 500. But on Sunday after the Quaker State 400 at Kentucky, drivers all agreed on one other potential change:

The driver adjustable track bar needs to go. z

Introduced during the off-season as a way for drivers to make changes to the handling of their cars from inside the cockpit and during a green flag run, the driver controllable track bar was largely frowned upon by most of the garage.

Weather update from Milwaukee
The weather forecast for today in Milwaukee, WI where the IndyCars will be racing has turned for the better.  It now calls for partly sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s until 7 PM, and then the rains may move in.  By then the race, that starts 4:30 local time, should be over.

That should put a smile on race promoter Michael Andretti's face, who was hoping for a good walk-up crowd. After the IndyCars put on the greatest race in the history of motorsports two weeks ago in Fontana, will the fans show up in droves to see more good racing? Mark C. reporting from Milwaukee

Pigot Nabs Milwaukee Pole with New Track Record
Spencer Pigot
West Allis, Wis. - For the second oval race on the 2015 calendar, a Mazda-powered Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires driver earned a place in the record books by obliterating an existing track record. Juncos Racing’s Spencer Pigot blistered The Milwaukee Mile with a two-lap average of 150.868 mph. The 21-year-old’s second lap of 150.961 mph was almost a full two miles per hour quicker than the 149.028 mph lap turned by Esteban Guerrieri during qualifying for the 2011 Indy Lights race.

It is the fourth pole of the year – and his first on an oval – for Pigot, the reigning Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires champion, who will attempt to duplicate his 2014 Milwaukee Pro Mazda victory.

Newgarden leads opening Milwaukee practice
Newgarden
CFH Racing driver Josef Newgarden was the quickest of 24 competitors in the initial practice session for the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest presented by the Metro Milwaukee Honda Dealers with a lap of 21.5415 seconds (169.626 mph). For Newgarden, it was a case of picking up where he left off on the historic 1.015-mile oval.

The fourth-year driver recorded the fastest lap in the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series race at The Milwaukee Mile on his way to a fifth-place finish. Whether Newgarden's pace holds up through a full day of practice, qualifying and the 250-lap race on July 12 remains to be seen, but the American is confident.

Afternoon Update from Milwaukee
The wild MAVTV 500 continues to be a topic of discussion here at Milwaukee.
Pretty quiet day here at The Milwaukee Mile. Indy Lights Presented By Cooper Tires just concluded their practice session with championship leader Jack Harvey setting fast time. Ed Jones was second with Spencer Pigot third.

The Verizon IndyCar Series is on track now. As you might imagine two of the topics that have dominated discussion in the world of IndyCar over the past two weeks were being discussed further: the race two weeks ago at Fontana and the bizarre schedule this weekend. Let's start with Fontana.

Apparently, there was a drivers meeting about two hours ago, in which the race at Fontana was discussed. As you surely know, there was dissent amongst the drivers about the racing at Fontana, and there were some heated discussions we witnessed after the meeting. We'll elaborate more on that if we can get some quotes from the drivers.
