IndyCar Milwaukee TV rating UPDATE #2 What's all the fawning (brown-nosing) by certain publications over the increased IndyCar TV ratings on NBCSN the last two races? Hello....let's get real.  A 0.42 ratings is the laughing stock of the industry. They were getting those numbers for the past 5 years, depending on the race.  NASCAR's third tier truck series gets better ratings.  You go to a potential sponsor with a number like that and they will laugh you out of the room. And if IndyCar wants to appeal to the NASCAR fan base on NBCSN, they will need to pack race 4 to 6 times a year. The NASCAR fans would love it. Murray Bennett

07/15/15 The 0.42 rating means 532,000 were tuned in for the Milwaukee IndyCar race on NBCSN. Had the race been on ABC well over 1 million viewers would have tuned in, bringing far greater value to team sponsors, race sponsor (ABC Supply) and TV advertisers.

07/13/15 IndyCar drew a 0.42 rating on NBCSN 5:00 pm Sunday for the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250, up 75% from the 0.24 overnight rating on the same channel last year.

Bourdais car underweight at Milwaukee (Update) UPDATE
Bourdais doing donuts
AR1.com has learned that Bourdais' car was three pounds underweight.  Donuts can take as much as five pounds off the tires. He has been told never to do donuts again. IndyCar's tech and PR departments could have given the whole truth by telling everyone that he failed by just 3 pounds, and not, say, 100 pounds.

So some people probably figured the team cheated to win, when in fact they just had the car right at the minimum weight and did not count on him doing donuts. Mark C. reporting for AR1.com

Consistency Leads to Positive Results for Andretti
Marco Andretti
Marco Andretti is the only Verizon IndyCar Series driver this season to complete every lap of all 12 races. That's 1,557 laps without a mechanical failure, issues with the Honda engines or on-track incident.

Cumulatively, it represents opportunities for the Andretti Autosport driver to deliver results. Since finishing sixth in the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, Andretti has reeled off four top fives in past six races in his No. 27 Andretti Autosport Honda. He placed eighth in the ABC Supply Wisconsin 250.

"I attribute the consistency, really maximizing what we have, to the 27 team in general," he said. "My dad (team owner Michael Andretti) is calling awesome races, everybody on the timing stand is doing a great job, the guys are flawless in the pits, my engineer (Nathan O'Rourke) is a rock star. I'm really pleased with the 27 side.

Stewart lauds driver council
Tony Stewart
As a three-time Sprint Cup Series champion, a team owner and a track owner, Tony Stewart is as qualified as any driver in NASCAR to offer a candid assessment of where the sport is making its greatest strides -- and where it could stand some refinements.

Stewart was asked to weigh in on this topic Tuesday during a national teleconference with members of the NASCAR media.

Admitting that his primary focus right now is on improving his struggling No. 14 Sprint Cup team, Stewart was quick to praise the sanctioning body for doing what he considers a good job of seeking feedback from drivers.

Stewart specifically praised the new driver council for soliciting the viewpoints of competitors about ways to make the sport better.

Iowa Speedway Ready to Challenge the Indy Lights Title Contenders
PALMETTO, Fla. – The highly acclaimed Iowa Speedway will host the third and final oval event of the 2015 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires season this Saturday, July 18. Jack Harvey, Spencer Pigot and Ed Jones are separated by just 29 points as they chase a top prize of a guaranteed entry in three rounds of the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series – including the historic 100th Indianapolis 500 – but as anyone who saw last Sunday’s race at the historic Milwaukee Mile will attest, there are plenty of other talented youngsters likely to be challenging for the top step of the podium in this weekend’s 12th round of the 16-race season.

Englishman Harvey, driving for seven-time championship-winning team Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian, extended his points lead at Milwaukee by three despite finishing outside the top three for only the third time this season. Harvey, 22, finished second in the championship during his rookie campaign in 2014 and already has an oval race victory to his credit this season, winning the Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May.

NASCAR Kentucky TV rating UPDATE The 2.0 rating means 3.2 million were tuned in for the NASCAR race on NBCSN

07/14/15 UPDATE The first NASCAR race on NBCSN was not much of a draw, but it held steady with last year. NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Kentucky drew a 2.0 overnight rating on NBCSN Saturday night, even with last year and down 17% from 2013 (2.4), both on TNT. It was the first telecast of the season on cable to avoid a decline in the metered markets. The 2.0 is tied as the second-lowest overnight for a Sprint Cup race this season, matching Michigan last month and ahead of only Kansas in May (1.5) - both of which experienced rain delays. Those races aired on Fox Sports 1. Saturday's race was the first NASCAR telecast on NBCSN (previously VERSUS and OLN). NBCSN was in 81.6 million homes as of February, fewer than FS1 (84.8M), and the least for a NASCAR broadcaster since FX in the early 2000s. Sports Media Watch

NHRA and ESPN announce television contract termination
"This announcement means that ABC and ESPN will have zero motorsports programming other than IndyCar in 2016 and beyond.  IndyCar should terminate their NBCSN contract and move all their races to ABC/ESPN where they will get exclusive coverage. NASCAR will bury IndyCar on NBC."  Mark Cipolloni, AR1.com
The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and ESPN have mutually agreed to end their television coverage agreement following the 2015 season.

The 2016 season was to be the final year of a five-year rights extension deal that took effect in 2012. The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series has aired exclusively on ESPN networks since 2001 and is currently in its 15th season on ESPN.

AR1 visits Dale Coyne Racing
Dale Coyne's team hosted AR1's Brian Carroccio at the Plainfield shop Monday
Greetings from Speedway, Indiana. I am spending the week between Milwaukee and Iowa here in the Midwest and am currently about a half-mile south of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

You may have seen on the news that the town of Speedway was pretty hard in storms yesterday. There are numerous trees and wires down and much of the town is without power. I passed one home that had a tree which had fallen through the roof. We here at AR1 wish everyone in Speedway the best.

Over the past two days, I've had the pleasure of visiting two Verizon IndyCar Series team shops. Yesterday, team P.R. rep Trevor Moore and the gracious people at DCR hosted me at the team headquarters in Plainfield, IL. This morning, I made my way down to Indianapolis to visit the Chip Ganassi Racing shop. Just like DCR, the people at Ganassi were very welcoming, and I would like to thank Ganassi P.R. rep Lynzy Stover and the team for their hospitality.

Pigot wins Milwaukee pole, then loses 5th gear in race
Spencer Pigot will look to rebound in Iowa after a disappointing race at Milwaukee
West Allis, Wisc. (14 July 2015) Racing on an oval that has seen drivers carve their names in IndyCar history for decades, young Spencer Pigot had high hopes as the Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires rookie prepared for his debut on the Milwaukee Mile this weekend.

Pigot, who won on oval, road and street courses on his way to the 2014 Pro Mazda Championship, was looking to make the most of his first run on the fabled track as he targeted more momentum in the Indy Lights Championship. Racing with the all-new Mazda-powered Dallara IL-15 for Juncos Racing, Pigot has a series-high four wins to his credit in his first season of Indy Lights competition.

The Milwaukee round is one of three oval outings for the series, with the Freedom 100 in May and next weekend's Iowa visit keeping the Indy Lights drivers on their oval game as they all look to find a future in the Verizon IndyCar Series.

Milwaukee likely to return in 2016
"Combined with the fact the race has ABC Supply as a sponsor, the fan turnout for Milwaukee was large enough to almost ensure its return in 2016" Mark Cipolloni, AR1.com
Last Sunday’s ABC Supply 250 was highly competitive and even somewhat surprising with all the overtaking and road racer supreme Sebastien Bourdais scoring an impressive victory. The people who came to State Fair Park were entertained but the question remains, were there enough of them to keep this race on the Verizon IndyCar schedule in 2016?

An optimistic estimate of the crowd was 12,000 (also shared by Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel racing writer Dave Kallman), although Kevin Healy (managing director of the race for Andretti Sports Marketing) told Kallman there were “way more” in attendance.

Approximately an hour before the green flag, Healy told RACER, “We had to close the tunnel because so many people were walking back and forth between in the infield fan zone and the grandstands. It was a nice turnout."

France pleased with rules package at Kentucky
Brian France
NASCAR Chairman Brian France liked what he saw from the racing Saturday night with the lower-downforce package, but admits he wants to see more drafting and pack racing. France made those comments Monday afternoon on "Sirius Speedway" on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "What we're really looking for is how tight is the racing?"

France said. "How many lead changes are there? How much passing through the field is going on? How many more teams are competitive by a given package? What accomplishes those goals the best? That's how we go about sorting it out. We're going to try some things coming up here at Indy (with a high-drag package). I'll tell you what we didn't see that we would like to see more of is more drafting. We didn't see as much of that as we would have liked and more pack racing. You saw that on the restarts but not quite as much (as we'd prefer). There were a lot of things we liked, definitely an improvement on the races that have happened at Kentucky."
