Bonneville Speed Week 2015 Cancelled  Due to Wet Salt
Dry lakes are supposed to be, well, dry, but that's not the case at Bonneville this year: The salt flats have been pounded by summer rain, leaving too little suitable surface for the 2015 Speed Week to go on as planned. After a weekend spent scouting for enough dry salt to allow even a single racing line, the Southern California Timing Association has moved to cancel this year's Speed Week, for the second consecutive year. The event was slated to run August 8th-14th.

Carpenter says he’s 'hopeful' CFH can retain Newgarden
Driving schooled in Europe, Newgarden was on his way to F1 but could not afford to buy his ride
One of the stars of the Verizon IndyCar Series season this year has been Josef Newgarden, in his fourth year overall and fourth with the CFH Racing team – albeit first under the merged CFHR banner rather than the separate Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing (where Newgarden was for his first three years) and Ed Carpenter Racing banners as existed previously.

Newgarden is a free agent at year's end, currently on a one-year deal with an option for a second.

CFH team co-owner and Newgarden's teammate, Ed Carpenter, is hopeful the smaller team that has persistently been a thorn in the Penske and Ganassi teams' sides can retain his services.

"I don't know. I'm hopeful," Carpenter said Monday on Query & Schultz, on WNDE Radio in Indianapolis. "But with those things you can do, you never know what you can do. Make an offer that works for the team, and Josef will have to decide what he wants to do.

NASCAR to penalize drivers who throw water bottles
A NASCAR executive said Monday that officials will address the issue of throwing water bottles out of the car with drivers after a water bottle was spotted on the apron during a debris caution in Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Another water bottle was spotted on the apron during a caution for Paul Menard later in the race.

Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer, told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s “The Morning Drive” that it’s not uncommon for drivers to discard water bottles during a race.

Graham Rahal's improbable IndyCar success keeps rising
Except for the Iowa race, Rahal has been the fastest Honda driver all year
It is safe to say, in the IndyCar ranks, Graham Rahal is putting together one fantastic season that has all the earmarks of a finish much like one of his favorite athletes -- LeBron James.

Just as James and the Cavs finished second in the 2015 NBA chase, young Rahal seems destined for a similar fate at best. At the same time, he continues to defy the odds.

Racing with what most of the season has been undernourished Honda power, Rahal has still put together a season that includes one race victory, five podium finishes, seven top five finishes and nine top 10s in 13 races.

He is now second in the series standings, the only Honda driver with a sniff at winning a championship.

Americans succeed at Iowa
Ryan Hunter-Reay, the winningest active American IndyCar driver
The July 18 Iowa Corn 300 at Iowa Speedway proved to be a banner day for six of the eight American drivers racing in the Verizon IndyCar Series.

Ryan Hunter-Reay, the winningest active American driver, scored his first win of 2015 and 15th of his career. Hunter-Reay became the third American driver to win in the past four races, joining Graham Rahal and Josef Newgarden among the nine race winners this season.

Three race-winning Americans is the most in the series since 2011 when Hunter-Reay, Marco Andretti and Ed Carpenter recorded victories. Add Charlie Kimball's 2013 victory at Mid-Ohio and six of the Americans currently competing in the series have won races.

Earnhardt and Johnson clinch Chase berths
Jimmie Johnson
Sunday at New Hampshire, two Hendrick Motorsports drivers essentially punched their tickets to the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Dale Earnhardt Jr. entered Sunday's race needing 35 points to secure a spot in the top 30 of the point standings, the next step to officially earn a place in NASCAR's postseason. He earned 39. Jimmie Johnson, meanwhile, needed 26 points to secure his top-30 spot -- with no help. However, his performance netted 22 points.

Still, with the way the race played out, those 22 points were enough to do the job. The driver of the #48 Lowe's Chevy SS also clinched his top-30 spot. Since both Johnson and Earnhardt have multiple wins, positions in the 16-driver Chase field are all but assured. The only requirement left is to start the remaining seven races of the regular season. Johnson working on contract extension
Jimmie Johnson
Just weeks before NASCAR's "silly season" of accelerated contract negotiation and frenzied driver movement speculation, six-time Sprint Cup champion #48-Jimmie Johnson remains without an extension to remain at Hendrick Motorsports. But that sounds like just a formality.

Before the 5-hour Energy 301 on Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Johnson told USA TODAY Sports that while there was "nothing new" in completing negotiations, he doesn't foresee a move from the team with which he has raced his entire 15-year Sprint Cup career. "(Team owner) Rick (Hendrick) likes to get things signed up and done well in advance, so there definitely have been conversations," Johnson said.

"We're kind of going down the road to get that all buttoned up and put together. But I'm home. I'm not going anywhere." USA Today

Carpenter and Rahal rip 'careless' Karam after Iowa race
Rookie Sage Karam beat some veterans and they did not like the way he did it
Sage Karam had just scored the highest finish of his career with a third in Saturday night's Iowa Corn 300, and it seemed every other driver in the field wanted a piece of the 20-year-old driver from Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

Ed Carpenter was furious with Karam, believing the rookie driver raced him dangerously and was darting up the track, getting way too close to the veteran driver in the closing stages of the race. Carpenter screamed on his radio, asking why IndyCar officials were not penalizing Karam and if they didn't, he would do it himself after the race.

Karam called it the most physical race of his career, and with the bumpiness on the bottom groove of the race track, it was difficult to keep his car on the low lane. He also wasn't going to let the opportunity for a podium finish slip away and when Carpenter was side-by-side with him, Karam believes he was trying to keep it under control.

IndyCar's return to Iowa almost certain
Ryan Hunter-Reay wins at Iowa again
In the wake of the Iowa Corn 300, social media was once again buzzing about the show the Verizon IndyCar Series put on at Iowa Speedway.

For the past several installments of the yearly open-wheel visit to the 7/8-mile track in Newton, close racing and thrilling finishes have enthralled fans and delighted sponsors who shell out millions of dollars to promote races. But unlike their NASCAR counterparts where the schedule rarely changes, the scheduling for the IndyCar Series leaves some doubt year-to-year about stops on their tour -- the Indianapolis 500 notwithstanding.

So after another nearly unanimously popular event, is IndyCar's future firm at Iowa Speedway? To ask track President Jimmy Small, it’s likely, if not certain.

AR1 Iowa Wrap
Ryan Hunter-Reay is not only the king of Iowa Speedway. But the numbers suggest he's this era's best Indy Car short track driver.
As you know by now, Ryan Hunter-Reay won an exciting Iowa Corn 300 last evening at Iowa Speedway. It was the 2012 champion's first win of 2015, and third win in his last 4 races at Iowa. Of course, Iowa is not the only short oval Hunter-Reay has excelled on, as the driver of the #28 DHL Honda has won 6 of the last 9 short oval races dating back to Loudon 2011. Very impressive.

AR1 was at Iowa Speedway this weekend covering the happenings. With the "romantic cornfields" as one journalist calls them well in our rearview mirror, we will pass along a few items we were unable to get to this weekend.

The big talk after the race was the Sage Karam/Ed Carpenter scrap. We'll discuss that a little later in the week. For now, we did some digging into the Silly Season for 2016.

NASCAR has not discussed tire changes for Chase races with Goodyear
The most intriguing wrinkle for the Chase may not be which championship contenders are in or out after each elimination round. It could be if NASCAR decides to use a package responsible for a race that drew nothing but rave reviews from the drivers. Goodyear has not been informed that the race package that was such a hit last week at Kentucky Speedway will be used for the 10 races that determine the Sprint Cup champion.

Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing, said the manufacturer would need to know in about a week if NASCAR would proceed with a request for soft tires that are typically paired with a lower-downforce aerodynamic package. Stucker said Goodyear typically needed 90 days from the date of the decision to produce the appropriate tires needed for each race. The Chase for the Sprint Cup championship begins Sept. 20 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Brian France worried IndyCar's 'Pack' racing better than NASCAR's
When Brian France saw how good the IndyCar race was at Fontana he was likely shitting in his pants knowing IndyCar could very well make NASCAR racing look like paint drying. Mark C./AR1.com
[Editor's Note: After seeing IndyCar put on the greatest race in the history of motorsports at Fontana 4 weeks ago in a demonstration of 'pack' racing done right] NASCAR chairman Brian France's pleas for more pack racing in the Sprint Cup Series has been met by resistance this week from drivers unconvinced it’s feasible.

After winning the pole position for the 5-hour Energy 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Carl Edwards said NASCAR should limit the practice of bunching cars together in tight groups to its twice annual visits to Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway.

But the Joe Gibbs Racing driver also posited that it wouldn’t be possible to engineer such racing at a 1.5-mile oval such as Kentucky Speedway, where a lower-downforce rules package made its debut last Saturday and produced a dramatic rise in green-flag passing and raves from many drivers, including Edwards.

Goodyear exec: No talk of changing aerodynamics package at Chicagoland
Goodyear’s director of racing said there has been “zero discussion” with NASCAR about changing the aerodynamics package for the Chase for the Sprint Cup opener at Chicagoland Speedway even though a lower-downforce configuration was tested there last week.

Greg Stucker told a group of reporters Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway that “we’d have to sit down and look at it pretty hard” if the sanctioning body wished to apply the package that led to a 132% increase in green flag passes and drew rave reviews from fans and drivers at Kentucky Speedway last week. NASCAR officials haven’t made any public proclamations of such a change, but speculation has been prevalent among competitors following the Chicago test.

Although he noted that teams have a decent baseline from before, T.K. essentially agreed. He also noted that because of this, he expects "teams to take a conservative approach, especially early."

• Ryan Briscoe told us after qualifying that the mandated aero package for Iowa, worked more in the favor of Chevrolet than Honda.

Firestone introduces new IndyCar rain tire
Firestone unveiled their new IndyCar rain tire today.  The tire has been a year in the making with several different compounds tested for wet/friction grip.  The thread pattern is the same but the compound is softer.  Although driver input was taken into account, the tire has not been tested yet on an Indy Car.

Mid-Ohio will be the first race that the wet compound tire will be available to the teams.  Each team was given one set of the new tires to take to Mid-Ohio.

The tire has a silver stripe like the alternate tires so you can distinguish the wet from the dry while the cars are on track.

Lucille Dust reporting from Iowa

(Editor's note: We are concerned the tire was not tested in advance. Keep in mind, this is a softer compound, and a softer compound will wear quicker making the potential for a failure more likely. Hopefully, that will not occur)

Ambrose to determine future racing plans after season
After years of 'lazy' racing can Ambrose (R) get the fast reflexes back that he needs?
Marcos Ambrose will make no decision about his racing future until after the completion of the PIRTEK Enduro Cup, in which he will share the DJR Team Penske Ford Falcon FG X with Scott Pye. But whichever way his decision goes, Ambrose is confident the rapidly improving team can threaten for victory in the endurance classics. The 2003-04 V8 Supercars Champion, who returned to Australia this year after 10 years racing in the USA, made the shock decision to make way for Pye in the driver's seat after just two events as he struggled to acclimatize to the car.

Since then he has tested as a co-driver in Darwin and is also expected to take part in the extended co-driver sessions at Ipswich and Sydney Motorsport Park leading into the opening enduro, the Wilson Security Sandown 500 on September 11-13. Speculation has been constant about Ambrose's future since he stepped back. There were doubts he would even drive in the endurance races this year, let alone return to the driver's seat full-time in 2016 to fulfil the second year of his contract.

WILL POWER (No. 1 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet): "The Verizon Chevy ran strong today. We didn't get much traffic running. It's hard to tell where we are at and it's obviously good by itself, but with all this downforce it would be. But we're looking forward to tomorrow's qualifying and with temperature dropping, it should make for some interesting results."

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA (No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet): "Very hot today behind the wheel of the Verizon Chevy, but was a good day for us. We learned a lot in the first practice session and were able to make good adjustments for the second one. I was happy with the way we finished the day. The top cars are all very close together on time. The cars behave way different than what we have been used to in the past, even just from this past weekend in Milwaukee. Tristan Vautier
I spoke with Dale Coyne right before the start of opening Verizon IndyCar Series practice. He confirmed Tristan Vautier will drive the #19 Dale Coyne Racing Honda for the remainder of 2015.

As for the #18 Honda, Coyne said Pippa Mann will be in the car at next month's race in Pocono, while Rodolfo Gonzales would "probably" be the driver at Mid-Ohio and Sonoma.

Toyota: Kyle Busch Notes & Quotes
Kyle Busch celebrates victory last week at Kentucky
KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

How do you keep the momentum of your team going from the victory at Kentucky?

"Certainly over the last few weeks we've done a decent job at being able to run up front, contend for wins and obviously that momentum is just kind of starting to build. We hope to continue that one here this weekend at New Hampshire. Looking forward to the Interstate Batteries Camry and making sure we can have another good, strong run here. I think it was two years ago, we finished second both times.

Morning update from Iowa Speedway
A move up to IndyCar for Carlin in 2016 is "unlikely," according to team owner Trevor Carlin.
It's about 10:30 a.m. local time here at Iowa Speedway. With opening practice not beginning until 3 p.m. the majority of the Verizon IndyCar Series teams are just beginning to arrive at the track. Currently, Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires is on track for the first of two practice sessions.

Prior to Indy Lights practice I bumped into Carlin team owner Trevor Carlin and asked him about the team's prospects of moving up to the Verizon IndyCar Series. The Carlin name, of course, is synonymous with success in junior formula racing in Europe, and the team expanded stateside to Lights for 2015 with the stated goal of at eventually moving up to IndyCar.

Iowa Speedway next battleground for IndyCar aero kits
Juan Montoya with the Chevy aero kit
For the last several years headed into the Verizon IndyCar Series’ annual stop at Iowa Speedway, the questions typically centered on Andretti Autosport and who might be able to beat the team that's won the last five races there.

But headed into the 2015 Iowa Corn 300, the questions are if the Hondas can beat the Chevys.

IndyCar implemented new aero kits before this season - one set for the road/street courses and another for the ovals -- and the results through 12 races have come up bowtie 75 percent of the time. That distinct advantage, especially on the ovals, has the Hondas searching as the series races on his second-to-last oval of the season.

Button backs proposed ground effect return in 2017
F1 to return to underbody tunnels
Jenson Button believes returning to lighter cars with downforce generated by the floor, rather than the front and rear-wings, is where Formula 1's future lies.

It's a proposal that has already been put forward for 2017 when the sport will undergo a radical overhaul aimed at making the cars "five to six seconds" per lap quicker.

Ground effect was last used in the early '80s, but was then banned, leaving F1 cars reliant on aerodynamics for downforce, primarily from the complex front and rear-wings which have increased in cost ten-fold over the past decade.

Loss of Peraltada corner unavoidable - Tilke
F1 is going thru the baseball stadium just like CART did
(GMM)  Renowned F1 circuit designer Hermann Tilke says the loss of the fearsome Peraltada corner from the Mexico layout was unavoidable.

The legendary, sweeping, high-speed end of the lap at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is legendary, but it has been left out as German Tilke heads the renovations ahead of Mexico's return to the calendar after more than two decades.

"We simply had no space on the outside of this great curve in order to have the required run-off area," Tilke told Speed Week.  "And the corner is so fast that it is absolutely a must for safety.

German GP uncertainty to return for 2017 race
The Nurburgring may never be able to host another F1 race again.
(GMM)  The uncertainty about the future of the German grand prix is not yet over.

F1 is currently in a three-week lull between the British and Hungarian races, after the Nurburgring was scratched from the 2015 schedule.

"This is very disappointing for everyone," Mercedes' Nico Rosberg told German media on a visit to Hamburg this week, "but it's important that this is just a break.

"The German grand prix is legendary in the formula one world championship -- there has to be a race," he insisted.
