Kyle Busch nips Ryan Blaney for XFINTY win
With a relentless charge that forced Ryan Blaney into a mistake on the final lap, Kyle Busch grabbed the lead with a half-lap left at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and took the checkered flag in Saturday’s Lilly Diabetes 250 NASCAR XFINITY Series race.

Blaney missed his mark in Turn 2 as Busch closed in, and with his momentum broken, the driver of the No. 22 Ford couldn’t stave off Busch’s winning pass on the backstretch. The No. 54 pulled away to win by .421 seconds, as Busch continued his white-hot run with his second XFINITY victory of the season, his second at The Brickyard and the record 72nd of his career.

Lynn scorches to Budapest victory
From left, Gasly, Lynn and Sirotkin
Alex Lynn put on a crushing display of speed and guile to claim his first feature race victory in scorching conditions this afternoon at the Hungaroring, leading for most of the race and picking the right tire strategy to win ahead of DAMS teammate Pierre Gasly and Sergey Sirotkin.

The Williams test driver made great use of pole position, blasting away when the lights went out and taking an easy early lead as fellow front row starter Stoffel Vandoorne stuttered: Red Bull tester Gasly made a brilliant start from P5 to follow his teammate into turn one, while Arthur Pic and Raffaele Marciello went either side of the McLaren man to follow the leaders through.

Teams unsure of impact of rules package at Indy
It's near impossible to get a taxicab to race well at a flat track like Indy
It's near impossible to get a stock car to race well at a flat track like Indy. Some say they shouldn't be racing at IndyCar's hallow ground anyway.  The racing stinks compared to IndyCars
Tony Gibson's race car led the final practice Friday for the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but the crew chief was apprehensive rather than excited to see what driver Kurt Busch could do with the #41 Chevy on Sunday. "I am a little nervous," Gibson told USA TODAY Sports after the final session, led by Busch with a 181.987-mph lap around the 2.5-mile speedway. "But that may be that was just what we had going on. We made our car better, but I am just nervous about it. We got around other cars fairly quick and could do nothing with them just because we got so loose. Typically, we're not like that here and the bigger tracks. Here it was like the whole car come out of the track."

Gibson said his Stewart-Haas Racing teammates had similar problems. Gibson said he doubts the new high-drag, high-downforce package being utilized this weekend and on Aug. 16 at Michigan International Speedway will engender more slingshot passing at Indianapolis. Cars will close quickly, he said, but seemingly lose the ability to pass because they become unstable when close to each other because of downforce loss.

#98 team loses tungsten from car; penalty expected
The #98 Ford driven by Timmy Hill had a multitude of issues in Friday's Sprint Cup practice. In the second session, a 35-pound tungsten weight fell off the car. NASCAR typically takes a dim view of ballast that is not secured properly. The sanctioning body confiscated the jettisoned weight and will address the matter in next week's competition meeting. In Happy Hour, Hill's Ford spun off Turn 4 and slammed nose-first into the inside wall, forcing his team to go to a backup car. As a tow truck was removing Hill's car from the track, the back of the car scraped the track, knocking off the rear extension. Hill didn't participate in the opening practice session. Higher spoiler causing more limited visibility at Indy
Kyle Larson, note large rear spoiler
Kyle Larson, note large rear spoiler
The larger spoiler teams are using this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is causing visibility issues for some NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers. As part of the high-drag aero package intended to enhance passing at a track where passing has been difficult for drivers in previous years, NASCAR has teams running a 9-inch spoiler with a 1-inch wicker bill on it. Part of the spoiler is clear, giving drivers a gap to look through in the rearview mirror, but Joey Logano said he'd like to have had more clear space to look through via his rearview mirror.

"It's challenging to see," Logano said Friday. "You have a small gap where the spoiler is clear and you can see out of that, and then obviously the wicker (which is not clear) is on top of that, so it's kind of hard. You only get a certain amount, but I think I can see about five car lengths behind me and any cars that are further back than that I can't see. That isn't the end of the world. If they're five car lengths back, you're probably not too worried about it anyway. When they get close is when you want to see it, but it is nice sometimes because we don't know. We'll see with this whole drafting package down the straightaway when that run is going to start."

Mercedes makes mockery of field in final practice
Hamilton is happy, his car makes him look so good
The Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg made a mockery of the F1 field in the final practice for the Hungarian GP Saturday morning using their superior cars. On his practice qualifying run Hamilton outpaced Rosberg by 0.098s.  The rest of the field are out to lunch.

Sebastian Vettel was the best of the rest in third, a whopping nine-tenths off Hamilton's pace. He doesn't have a chance against the Silver Arrows. Rest assured that Sunday will be another boring Mercedes parade.

Jamie McMurray
Jamie McMurray
JAMIE MCMURRAY, NO. 1 MCDONALD’S/CESSNA CHEVROLET SS met with media and discussed his former win at the Brickyard and what it meant to him, his season to date, the rules package change for this weekend, keeping his cool on-track, and more.

REFLECT BACK TO THAT WIN AND THEN RETURNING NOW. HOW BIG OF A DEAL WAS IT TO WIN HERE AT THE BRICKYARD?

“For me, when I look back at the picture of getting to kiss the bricks, it’s special for a lot of different reasons. But one of those was because Christy was pregnant with Carter, 7 months I think with a big belly, and I remember on that day as we kissed the bricks, looking at her and telling her what a special memory we were going to have with him and the fact that we’ve won the race and we’re kissing the bricks and he’s in your belly.

McCumbee Making His Own Name in Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge
In 2004, Chad McCumbee’ s racing career, which began at age 10 in karts, took a strange turn: He was cast as a young Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in the made-for-TV movie “3: The Dale Earnhardt Story.” The movie, described by the producer as an “unauthorized docudrama” about the late NASCAR driver, may not have made Chad McCumbee a household name, but it definitely didn’t hurt his racing career.

He ran 105 races in the NASCAR Camping World truck series, four races in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and 10 races at the top level, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Gabby Chaves to run Tony Stewart Classic Midget Race
Gabby Chaves
On his weekend off from the Verizon IndyCar Series, Bryan Herta Autosport driver Gabby Chaves will take part in the inaugural "Tony Stewart Classic" midget race  at the Indianapolis Speedrome. Honda Racing and Honda Performance Development invited Chaves to run a Honda powered midget that is in development for and owned by USAC.

Chaves knows he's a "duck out of water" in this category of racing, and was somewhat surprised to see the car was front engine, had no mirrors, and used no spotters. However, he's excited for the challenge of the 1/5 mile asphalt oval on Indianapolis's southeast side. Visit www.speedrome.com for more information.

Lynn flies to maiden GP2 pole
Alex Lynn
Reigning GP3 Series Champion Alex Lynn took his first GP2 pole position in today’s qualifying session at Budapest. The Briton set the fastest lap time of the day in a 1:28.022 pipping Series leader Stoffel Vandoorne from the top spot by 0.019s. Arthur Pic completed the top three.

The pitlane opened once again in scorching temperatures. The drivers fed onto the track eager to put their Soft Pirelli tires to good use. Raffaele Marciello seemed on a mission as he was the first man to dip under 1m29s on his first push lap, but Vandoorne went quicker and moved up to P1. Behind the battling pair, Pic was also working hard to be featured at the top of the standings. As most drivers returned to the pits for fresh rubber, the Frenchman was able to find a clear lap to improve on his lap time, but it was still not enough and he remained P3 as he too returned to the pits.

A lap of the Hungaroring with Sebastian Vettel
Hungaroring
Ferrari.com has found itself the ideal guide to describe a perfect lap of the Hungaroring.

"This track features a lot of gradient changes," says Sebastian Vettel "and it's very important to keep to the right line.

After Turn 1, which is very tight, you drop down towards the second corner, which requires heavy downhill braking.

Next comes Turn 3, which is very quick and leads to a blind corner, number 4 and you have to carry your speed all the way to the next corner. After a short straight, you have to brake again, before the chicane that leads to turns 6 and 7.

GP2: Vandoorne on top in free practice
Stoffel Vandoorne is the fastest man in GP2
Series leader Stoffel Vandoorne was back on top this morning: the Belgian ace set the quickest lap time in today’s free practice session at Budapest in a 1:28.969, a clear four tenths from title rival Rio Haryanto. Alex Lynn completed the top 3.

The session opened in high temperatures with the cars feeding onto the short and twisty track on Medium Pirelli tires. Pierre Gasly set the early pace ahead of his teammate Lynn in heavy traffic, but Vandoorne dipped under 1m30s on his first push lap moving up to the top of the standings, Alexander Rossi in tow. Lynn found some extra pace to better the Belgian’s lap time, with Haryanto also able to move up to P2. Vandoorne however was on a mission and went even quicker to break the 1m29s barrier and sit pretty at the top.

NASCAR Rule package specifics for Indy
At Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend, NASCAR will debut its second track-specific rule package of the season. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series package planned for Indianapolis includes a 43-inch radiator pan (increased from 38 inches), a two-inch splitter leading edge, a one-inch wicker bill and nine-inch spoiler (increased from six inches). The increased downforce adds drag to the car and creates a larger draft window in the back.

For Indianapolis, teams will be allowed to change their engines prior to qualifying and data will be permitted at practice. A single gear will be used, but teams will bring four different gears. NASCAR will determine which gear is needed after practice. Teams will start on a 3.70 gear.

Ecclestone Thwarted Plan For Luca Di Montezemolo To Run F1
Luca di Montezemolo
F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone "dismissed a plan for Luca di Montezemolo, the deposed president of Ferrari, to oversee the running of Formula One," according to Kevin Eason of the LONDON TIMES.

The "charismatic Italian, who led Ferrari through the team’s greatest years, was on the verge of heading the sport this season as F1’s owners searched for a successor to Ecclestone." Instead, Di Montezemolo "is leading the bid by Rome to win the 2024 Olympic Games."

Di Montezemolo is one of Ecclestone’s "oldest friends and allies" and Ecclestone acknowledged on Wednesday that he would have been "a good front man." But Ecclestone "did not believe that Di Montezemolo would have the all-consuming interest in running F1 that has helped to turn the man known simply as 'Bernie' into a legend among sport administrators."

IndyCar: New On-Board LED Display Panels to Debut at Mid-Ohio Next Week
LED lights being tested
Zach Wenzel/NGI photo
INDYCAR announced today the introduction of new technology that will track each Verizon IndyCar Series car's running position and display it in real time via light emitting diode (LED) panels on the side of each racecar. The LED panels have been tested multiple times this season and will be implemented in time for the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio on Aug. 2.

"INDYCAR is committed to implementing new technology into the Verizon IndyCar Series and this project was about how we can to enhance the at-track experience for fans at our events and allow them to understand more of what's going on," said Derrick Walker, INDYCAR President of Competition and Operations. "If you're not in the line of sight of a video screen or a scoring pylon, it's sometimes hard to know who's doing what on the racetrack. It was a natural to do the numbering system and we're confident this will help get our fans more engaged at the track."

Massa says Formula One should consider closed cockpits
Would Jules Bianchi and Dan Wheldon still be alive if Open-Wheel cars had canopies? Probably.
Bianchi died last Friday, nine months after suffering severe brain trauma in a collision with a recovery vehicle at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. F1 has always had open cockpits but the idea of closing off the driver has been mooted as one way to prevent similar accidents in future.

It is a pertinent subject for Massa, who suffered life-threatening injuries at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix when he was struck by a spring which had become detached from Rubens Barrichello's car. The FIA's initial findings on Bianchi's crash said a closed cockpit would not have lessened his injuries due to the forces involved in the crash, but Massa thinks F1 must remain open-minded about the concept.

"I'm not completely against it," Massa said. "If it's better for everybody and it doesn't change the aspect of Formula One ... maybe not closing the cockpit [completely] but doing something they always did to change safety in that area. I'm not against it."

Gossage supports IndyCar's move to combat driver criticism of officials' calls
Eddie Gossage. AR1.com's stance is simple - any employee working for any company that badmouth's the company or its product in public gets fired. IndyCar cannot fire the drivers, but they sure can hammer them hard.
Texas Motor Speedway track president Eddie Gossage has never been one to shy away from controversy or advocate the need for participants in NASCAR or IndyCar to display genuine passion or authentic emotion.

With that said, he recognizes that drivers and team personnel sometimes cross the line in directing that criticism towards the sanctioning body. As a result, he supports the new IndyCar regulations that strongly monitor "detrimental competitor conduct."

Many interpreted the rule as a gag order, but Gossage said overt and public criticism about IndyCar or any other professional sport should not be tolerated.

"Controversy is a good promotional tool, but there are certain things you just don't say," Gossage told Autoweek on Wednesday at Eldora Speedway. "One of them is that you don't question the officials publicly. I think what (IndyCar) is saying is that if you have an issue, talk to us, but don't pop off to the world.

Michigan Int'l Speedway Diversifying Revenue Streams With Numerous Music Festivals
The success of the three-day Faster Horses country music festival at Michigan Int'l Speedway has prompted the track and concert promoter Live Nation to "begin plans for a rock festival that could be akin to Lollapalooza, Coachella and Bonnaroo," according to Bill Shea of CRAIN'S DETROIT BUSINESS.
The idea "is still in the talking stage, but it represents the track's latest effort to boost revenue outside of auto racing." MIS President Roger Curtis: "It kind of dawned on us we've got a great facility, we've got a great team here, let's start to expand our portfolio and look at becoming an entertainment destination." MIS "is best known for its two NASCAR Sprint Cup races," but attendance at the races "has fallen since the recession." MIS "hasn't sold out either NASCAR weekend" since '06.

Jean Alesi busted for speeding en route to Nurburgring
Jean Alesi
It's got to be tough for a retired racing driver. You spend your whole life training to go faster and faster, then your career is done and you have to keep within the confines of the same speed limits as everyone else. That is, at least, the challenge to which Jean Alesi has apparently struggled to rise up.

The former F1 driver was reportedly caught driving more than 35 miles per hour above the speed limit in Germany. Which is a funny place to get busted for speeding, considering that some of its highways don't have speed limits altogether – but that evidently wasn't one of the sections on which Alesi was busted. He was reportedly on his way from Avignon, France, to the Nurburgring to watch his son Giuliano undergo a test session for Formula Renault when he was pulled over by police. He was handed a fine in excess of $1,000, talked racing with the officers, and then went on his way. But that may not be the end of the matter as the infraction may result in Alesi being banned from driving on German roads for two months.

IndyCar fines to add up for those who badmouth the product UPDATE #2 Mark Miles insisted Tuesday that the rule is "not a gag order" and won't limit content for media coverage.

"We recognize that controversy, tension and drama all have a place in motorsport today," Miles said in a statement. "Our drivers are competitors and we have no interest in eliminating the emotion and passion that is an integral part of our sport."

Miles also said a heated exchange after Saturday night's race at Iowa Speedway would not be penalized under the new rule. Ed Carpenter confronted Sage Karam after the race to complain about the way Karam drove in the closing laps.
