NASCAR driver Buddy Baker faces death with predictable courage
Buddy Baker
Buddy Baker is facing the end of his life with the same courage he demonstrated during a long NASCAR career, when he sometimes drove at more than 200 mph.

“I’m right with The Man Upstairs,” Baker said Saturday when I visited him along with Humpy Wheeler and Waddell Wilson at the Baker home on the western shore of Lake Norman near Terrell. “If I feared death I never would have driven a race car.”

Baker, 74, is stricken with inoperable lung cancer, discovered in December.

The shine has come off the Brickyard 400
Some grandstands were completely empty
Watching the weekend’s Brickyard 400, it was impossible not to notice two things on the NBC broadcast: the lack of on-track passing outside of the first few laps after the initial green flag or a restart, and, perhaps more alarmingly, the massive amount of empty seats around the 2.5-mile speedway.

No matter how hard the cameras tried - and they tried pretty hard - it was impossible to hide the meagre amount of people who had arrived at the corner of 16th and Georgetown to watch the 21st visit by NASCAR’s top series to the most famous racetrack in the world.

Perhaps it was even the smallest crowd to attend what has, since its inception, been one of NASCAR’s more prestigious events - up there with the Daytona 500, Southern 500 at Darlington, the night race at Bristol and the Memorial Day Coke 600 at Charlotte - but we’ll never know for sure, because IMS doesn’t release crowd figures for any of its events.

Bourdais took pole at Mid-Ohio last year and finished 2nd. This year he wants the win.
Last year, Sebastien Bourdais finished second in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. This year, having his best season in IndyCar, he is hoping to pick of his third win of 2015 at the Morrow County race track.

Bourdais is currently sixth in the points standings. His 366 points puts him within 31 of third place, though, giving him hopes of having a memorable year. In fact, in his second year with KV Racing Technology, the 36-year-old already considers this year a success. He finished 10th last year and 12th in 2013 after being in the 20s the previous two years.

"We restarted from scratch last year and did good work," he said. "Chevy is giving us great engines and it's all coming together this year. Now, we're really close to the podium for the championship. Regardless of what happens, mission accomplished. What we wanted to do was be more consistent because our weakness last year was doing it week-in and week-out."

BMW Rules Out LMP1 Program
BMW has ruled out launching a LMP1 program for the new-for-2017 regulations, although wouldn't discount possible future involvement at Le Mans through a Garage 56 entry.

"Regulations in LMP1 are obviously new for 2017 but still, it's very much hybrid and a hybrid championship," Marquardt said in a media roundtable during last weekend's Total 24 Hours of Spa.

Did You Know? 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series Championship
Leaving Iowa Speedway on July 18, Juan Pablo Montoya's wrist hurt a lot more than the result of his first DNF of the Verizon IndyCar Series season.

Though the Team Penske driver placed last in the 24-car field because of a Lap 10 single-car crash in Turn 2, in which he sustained a bruised wrist, Montoya's championship points lead didn't incur much of a dent as a few challengers incurred mechanical issues.

With three races remaining, Montoya's margin is 42 points over the surging Graham Rahal of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Three-time series champion Scott Dixon of Target Chip Ganassi Racing is 48 points in arrears and Helio Castroneves of Team Penske is 54 points out of first.

Firestone's New Rain Tire to Gain Traction with Teams
New Firestone Rain Tire
Spectators, TV viewers and Verizon IndyCar Series teams will be able to better distinguish which cars are running Firestone Racing's new rain tire by its silver stripe, which complements the red stripe on the alternate tires used on road and street courses.

The new rain tires will be available this weekend at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, should wet conditions necessitate their use on the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Beyond the packaging, the year-long rain tire development process utilized state-of-the-art technologies to meet the goals of safety, reliability and raceability on a variety of wet surfaces. The tread pattern and tread depth are the same as the previous rain tires introduced in July 2014.

"There are a lot of things we're doing behind the scenes to make sure we're putting the best possible product on the racetrack. For the first time, we used a lot of our company's internal tools to look at the compound on a small scale," said Dale Harrigle, chief engineer for Bridgestone Americas Motorsports and manager of race tire development.

Drivers say rules package at Indy not effective
No matter what NASCAR tries, their wallowing cars do not race well at Indy
No matter what NASCAR tries, their wallowing cars do not race well at Indy
NASCAR might need to go back to the drawing board in its quest to create more competitive stock car racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. NASCAR officials debuted a "high-drag" aero package in Sunday's Brickyard 400, featuring a nine-inch spoiler and other measures intended to slow the cars down and punch a big hole in the air, which officials hoped would create drafting and pack racing. But the racing didn't look much different from previous NASCAR races at Indy. With the exception of some wild restarts, the racing was largely single file.

Kevin Harvick called it a "huge science project that probably didn't really change that much." "I think everybody put in a lot of effort to try to really make everything a lot better, spent a lot of money, but I don't know that we accomplished everything that we were looking to accomplish," Harvick said.

Heat a factor with Indy rules package
Kyle Busch unbeatable right now
Kyle Busch unbeatable right now
Kyle Busch continued his hot streak with a win at Indy. Busch and the rest of the field were all full of hot air at the Brickyard. The cars were extremely hot inside the cockpit because the aerodynamic package trapped air inside. Busch was one of many drivers physically drained following Saturday's race, and Sunday's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway seemed to have the same consequence.

This same rules package is scheduled to be used next month at Michigan. "I got a huge blister on my foot," Logano said. "I think the extended bumper cover on the back of these things doesn't let the airflow underneath the car like it used to without it, and I think it builds the inside temperature up. I've got sweat in my eyes. It's just too hot inside those cars."

F1 safety system working after Bianchi accident
In N.Y.,  Brad Spurgeon wrote a "sense of fatalism is hanging over Formula One" days after the death of French driver Jules Bianchi. Many observers "consider the Frenchman’s crash a freak accident."

Bianchi "skidded off a wet track at high speed and ran under a crane vehicle that was removing a car that had been in an earlier crash." Some argued that "the crane should not have been there at all, but there are few other ways to remove a wreck at the edge of a track."

And because he's good at business -- he got his MBA from Michigan State University before he ever went big-time auto racing -- he has managed to stay in motorsports as a successful team owner and driver since 1985, when he founded Rocketsports Racing.

Gentilozzi has 31 wins as a driver in Trans-Am, a class win in the Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2002 and an overall win in 1994, co-driving a Nissan with Scott Pruett, Butch Leitzinger and Steve Millen. He was a co-owner of Champ Car, and fielded entries for drivers like Alex Tagliani and Justin Wilson.

GP2: Matsushita dominates for sprint win
From left, Vandoorne, Matsushita and Sirotkin
Nobuharu Matsushita crushed the competition for his first GP2 victory this morning at the Hungaroring, easily claiming the win in a sprint race where everyone else struggled with their tires in the cooler conditions to lead the first ART 1-2 since Sam Bird and Jules Bianchi in Monza 2010, ahead of teammate Stoffel Vandoorne and Sergey Sirotkin.

The Japanese driver took advantage of pole position to easily lead his rivals away when the lights went out with a good start, while McLaren tester Vandoorne and Sirotkin made sparkling getaways to run inside into turn one: the Belgian eased his way into P2 while the Russian was briefly held by Raffaele Marciello but got past the Italian around the outside with a lovely pass out of turn two.

Video: MotoGP champ Casey Stoner suffers multiple injuries in Suzuka crash
Former MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner suffered multiple injuries in a high-speed crash during Sunday's Suzuka 8 Hour motorcycle race.

Stoner fell victim to a stuck throttle early in the endurance classic and as a result, crashed hard through the gravel trap. Stoner was immediately helped off the track by the safety crew, but would later reveal on Twitter that he suffered a broken scapula and fractured tibia.

The 29-year-old Australian was leading the endurance race for HARC-Pro Honda at the time of the malfunction. However, heavy damage to the bike put an end to the team's quest for a third consecutive Suzuka 8 Hour victory.

It was Stoner's first competitive motorcycle race since retiring from MotoGP in 2012. He was joined by teammates Michael van der Mark and Takumi Takahashi.
