Like the aero package, the IndyCar shock packages are a total waste of money
Not a single fan cares about the shocks on the car - why are they not spec?
Not a single fan cares about the shocks on the car - why are they not spec?
Michael Andretti has been one of the loudest critics of the current dual aero kits built and supplied by Honda and Chevrolet since the body kits were introduced before the 2015 season. He believed it was an unnecessary expense that ultimately split the field in half. And AR1.com has been saying that the shocks that each team are allowed to modify is a total waste of money. It divides the field and adds not a single new fan.

Does IndyCar think even a single fan sitting in the grandstand leans over to his buddy and says, "wow, did you see that shock make that incredible pass?" Of course not, so why are they not spec?

Target ditches NASCAR
Kyle Larson will lose Target
Kyle Larson will lose Target
It’s not a complete surprise, but SBJ and Adam Stern first reported on Friday morning that Target has notified Chip Ganassi Racing that they won’t renew their contract, making 2017 the final year they will sponsor the organization.

Last year, Target pulled out of the Verizon IndyCar Series side with them and did so after 28 years of a relationship. They had won all 11 championships together and nearly 100 wins, including four of which in the Indianapolis 500.

In NASCAR, Target was around for 16 years, including having some rich success over the last few years with a young gun in Kyle Larson. He’s won three times over the last 11 months and is squarely in the hunt for the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship.

Mid-Ohio: Afternoon Update
Is Jack Harvey closing in on a full-time IndyCar ride for 2018?
Is Jack Harvey closing in on a full-time IndyCar ride for 2018?

I bumped into 2014 and 2015 Indy Lights runner-up Jack Harvey here in the paddock at Mid-Ohio. Harvey, of course, made his IndyCar debut in this year’s Indianapolis 500, finishing 31st, in a joint Michael Shank Racing/Andretti Autosport entry. I asked the Bassingham, England native about the rumor he might run the season finale at Sonoma Raceway.

Harvey noted that he was “working on it,” and it would be the best chance of any other race he would run this year. He would go on to say that his main focus was on securing a full-time ride next season. I asked him what he thought his chances were, and he indicated that while nothing is done, he feels more positive now than he has in a while.

Video: How a race car driver can buy their ride in motorsports
With TV ratings so bad in IndyCar on NBCSN, teams have a hard time getting sponsors so they can hire the best drivers. Instead, drivers have to find a way to buy their ride by getting daddy to write a big check or finding a sponsor themselves.

In Safe Is Fast's latest video, they present an interesting case history - how Charlie Kimball turned the negativity of being diagnosed with Diabetes into a positive, and earned sponsorship of his IndyCar program.

However, he will be surpassed by Lewis Hamilton tomorrow in the superior Aldo Costa Mercedes. While all the other drivers set their fast times on Supersoft tires, Lewis Hamilton ran the harder soft tires and will still not far behind in 5th.

Sebastian Vettel was 2nd quick for Ferrari some 0.183s back.

IndyCar's struggles to get a 3rd engine manufacturer
A reader asks, Dear AR1.com, IndyCar has been trying to get a third engine manufacturer in the series for many years but has been unsuccessful. What is the problem? Patty Clark

Dear Patty, Indeed, they have failed to land a 3rd engine manufacturer and the reasons are simple:

  1. TV ratings on NBCSN are so low, where is the return on investment?
  2. International TV viewership is unknown because IndyCar refuses to do the research to gather the data from the ESPN International race broadcast distribution. Those viewers could be added to the USA viewership to at least make the total global viewership number reasonable. Why don't they do it? Because the current management doesn't care. They only care about their beloved Indy 500.

Porsche confirms pullout from LeMans LMP1
With Audi gone and now Porsche, could Toyota be far behind? Stick a for in expensive LMP1 racing.
With Audi gone and now Porsche, could Toyota be far behind? Stick a for in expensive LMP1 racing.
From 2019, a Porsche works team will compete in Formula E. As a result, the company will be ending its involvement in the LMP1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the end of the 2017 season. Porsche maintains its focus on international GT racing, and will also concentrate its motorsport strategy on using the 911 RSR in the GT class of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the highlight of which is the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as the American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and other long-distance classics.

This realignment of motorsport is derived from the direction set out for the company in Porsche Strategy 2025, which will see Porsche develop a combination of pure GT vehicles and fully electric sports cars, such as the first fully battery-powered Mission E road car.

Porsche set to compete in Formula E from 2019-20 season
(L-R) Oliver Blume, Alejandro Agag and Michael Steiner
(L-R) Oliver Blume, Alejandro Agag and Michael Steiner
STUTTGART, GERMANY (July 28, 2017) - Porsche has today revealed plans for a factory-backed works team to compete in the all-electric FIA Formula E Championship starting in season six. As part of a new strategy and realignment of Porsche’s existing motorsport program, the German manufacturer has committed to join Formula E from the 2019/20 season.

Alejandro Agag, Founder & CEO of Formula E, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Porsche to the FIA Formula E Championship. If somebody told me when we started this project five years ago, that we’d be announcing a partnership with a brand like Porsche, I wouldn’t have believed it. To have a name like Porsche in Formula E, with all it represents in terms of racing and heritage - and in terms of sport cars - is an inflexion point in our quest to change the public perception about electric cars. The electric revolution continues, and Formula E remains the championship for that revolution.”
