Dalziel, Mills, Aschenbach Double Up in Mid-Ohio
Ryan Dalziel (GT), Michael Mills (GT-A) and Lawson Aschenbach (GTS) have completed a weekend sweep for Pirelli World Challenge at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, following a win in Sunday's Round 12, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge Presented by StopTech.

Sunday's 50-minute sprint race ran with two yellow flag interruptions but compared to Saturday's rain-shortened event in mixed conditions, it was a welcome change of pace with a clear, sunny afternoon.

Dalziel, of Winter Park, Fla., launched cleanly from the pole position in the No. 31 EFFORT Racing Porsche GT3 R; he'd garnered the pole as a result of setting the fastest race lap in Saturday's Round 11.

Grist wins Pro Mazda Race 2 at Mid-Ohio
Garett Grist, here celebrating the win at Lucas Oil Raceway Pak, scored a second Pro Mazda win earlier today at Mid-Ohio.
Lexington, Ohio – Garett Grist lined up third on the grid for this morning’s Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Grand Prix at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Round 11 of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, but he didn’t stay there for long. The 19-year-old from Grimsby, Ont., Canada pounced at the rolling start, moving alongside front row starters Nicolas Costa and Kyle Kaiser on the drag race toward Turn Four before taking the lead with a bold maneuver to secure the inside line – and the lead – into Turn Six.

Grist remained under pressure for the entire 20-lap race from Costa, who ensured a fine weekend for Team Pelfrey after winning yesterday’s race and claiming the additional bonus point this morning for setting fastest race lap by a scant 0.0010 seconds over Grist. The Canadian’s second victory of the season with Andretti Autosport’s #27 DaVinci Foods/Lander Property Management entry moved him up one place in the season standings to fifth, just two points behind teammate Shelby Blackstock who was unfortunately involved in an incident even before the green flag had been waved.

Antonio Fuoco celebrates second season win
The 23rd season round of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship provided plenty of action for the spectators at the 4.326 kilometers long Red Bull Ring. Antonio Fuoco (Prema Powerteam) was able to decide the race in his favor, although he never led the field for one moment. For his second victory in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season, the rookie driver benefited from a 20 seconds’ time penalty for Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin), who led throughout the race, due to an infringement of the safety car procedure. Eventually, Fuoco won from Tom Blomqvist (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) and national hero Lucas Auer (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport). For points’ leader Esteban Ocon (Prema Powerteam), things didn’t go according to plan either; the French Lotus Formula 1 junior driver collided with Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mucke Motorsport) and retired.

Antonio Giovinazzi celebrates maiden FIA Formula 3 European Championship race win
At the 4.326 kilometers long Red Bull Ring, 20-year-old Italian Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) celebrated his maiden FIA Formula 3 European Championship race win. His team-mate Tom Blomqvist (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) took the chequered flag in third place from Lucas Auer (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport), the only Austrian in the field. Esteban Ocon (Prema Powerteam) remains in the lead of the drivers’ standings. The French Lotus Formula 1 junior driver finished 13th in the race following a drive-through penalty for driving too fast under yellow flags and thus failed to score any points.

At the start, Antonio Giovinazzi benefited from his pole position and took the lead. Tom Blomqvist followed in second place. Soon after that, Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mucke Motorsport) spun into the gravel trap and retired. On lap three, a collision involving Alexander Toril (ThreeBond with T-Sport) and Jules Szymkowiak (Van Amersfoort Racing) brought the safety car out. The accident meant the end of the race for Spanish driver Toril

Mid Ohio 1:00 report
AR1's Tim Wohlford says look for another strong crowd today at Mid-Ohio. Here, fans pack the hillside Turn 4-5-6 complex for 2013 race.

- Race officials at Mid-Ohio can't be more pleased with the turnout for this weekend's race, and are predicting huge crowds for the big show this afternoon (which starts at 3:50 PM ET).

- Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Race 2 just concluded with Jack Harvey again stealing the show, winning by 12 seconds. The driver of the #42 Racing Steps Foundation machine scored his first win yesterday, so his entire collection of Indy Lights trophies comes from Mid-Ohio. However, based on the exhibition he put on today, it won't be his last -- and no doubt he is now on the radar screen of IndyCar team owners.

Mid Ohio Morning Warm-up (Update 1) UPDATE
Tristan Vautier

Correction: 2012 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Champion Tristan Vautier, not Conor Daly, will be testing the new Dallara Lights car  tomorrow at Mid-Ohio.

Daly shook the car down last Thursday, and 2013 IndyCar Sunoco Rookie of the Year Vautier, who has been working as a driver-coach for the Mazda Road to Indy during 2014 will be behind the wheel tomorrow.

Polesitter Sebastien Bourdais leads a KV 1-2 in the morning warm-up.
BREAK UP KVSH RACING TECHNOLOGY PART DEUX! (a little Francais lingo thrown in for Sebastien's benefit). KVSH ruled morning warm-up, with Sebastien Bourdais pacing the field.

The shock, however, came in when KV AFS Racing teammate Sebastian Saavedra was second-fastest, causing many to scratch their heads. Maybe he was smiling today" commented one crew member, echoing the idea the speed secrets are all in Saavedra's head. Yesterdays' 1 lap qualifying runs in the rain weren't Saavedra’s "cup of tea", and today's long run was more to his liking. All parties insist that the car was the same today as it was yesterday.

Jimmy Vasser, however, did admit to using the competition red tires when most of the teams were using their black tires, and probably the entire exercise didn't mean that much. Except of course to the collective facial muscles of the team, which no doubt are hurting now due to the big smiles.

Newey: F1 becoming GP1
Newey says F1 is just an engine formula now, and if you don't have a Mercedes engine, you have no chance
As he enters the final stages of his F1 career, Adrian Newey fears the sport is becoming "GP1" as the rules are too restrictive.

This season will be Newey's last in the Formula 1 paddock as the Brit is set to step down as Red Bull's technical guru.

Newey has often cited his disillusionment with the way the sport's regulations are going as his reason for walking away.

In fact, the Championship-winning designer fears Formula 1 is losing what makes it Formula 1.

"There have been a whole host of factors playing their parts in my decision to leave F1, and a lot of mixed emotions," he told Motor Sport Magazine.

Melbourne secures F1 race until 2020
After year-long talks with Formula One Management (FOM), Melbourne has put pen to paper on a fresh Formula 1 deal that will see the Australian Grand Prix remain at Albert Park until at least the 2020 season.

Premier of Victoria Denis Napthine and Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher took centre stage to announce the 2016-2020 extension, finalized with Bernie Ecclestone and FOM in London last week.

"I congratulate Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chairman Ron Walker for his success as a tough negotiator in getting the best deal for Victoria," said Napthine after its confirmation. "Within this contract we hope to see Australia's own Daniel Ricciardo win the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and become World Champion."

Update from Mid-Ohio
Sebastien Bourdais starts today's race from pole.
The Verizon IndyCar Series morning warm-up for today's Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio has been delayed slightly. Due to fog this morning, a safety helicopter was unable to land at Mid-Ohio, delaying the U.S. F2000 race a few minutes.

Frenchman Florian Latorre captured victory from pole in the third U.S. F2000 race of the weekend just a few minutes ago. The Indy Cars should be on track for the morning warm-up beginning at 10:25 a.m. local time.

Keselowski wins in Iowa
The well-worn script read something like this: Brad Keselowski swoops in from the sky.

The 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion snares a second straight win in the NASCAR Nationwide Series U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway, then hops a jet back to Pocono Raceway and competes in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Long Pond, Pennsylvania.

Simple. Neat. Expected — except part-timer Michael McDowell nearly spoiled the big-timer's happy, if nerve-wracking Saturday night ending.

Courtney wins, Whincup takes points lead
James Courtney the winner Sunday
Holden's Jamie Whincup has declared his Ford rival Mark Winterbottom is still the man to beat despite his sudden and methodical charge into the V8 Supercars Championship lead.

For the second day running Whincup benefited from others' misfortune as he stormed back into the Championship lead for the first time in five months.

As Holden Racing Team's James Courtney continued his exceptional recent form with a convincing Sunday win at the Coates Hire Ipswich 300, Whincup might well have had a big grin on his face when his main rival Winterbottom shredded a tire on lap 22.

Video: Sergio Rinland Designs the Dunlop Future Race Car
As part of the collaborative design project 'Dunlop Future Race Car Challenge', the tire manufacturer has gathered the opinions of industry experts and motorsport fans about what the 'race car of the future' might look like.

Culminating this innovative campaign, Dunlop enlisted the help of renowned Grand Prix and Le Mans designer Sergio Rinland, who reviewed the ideas submitted by fans across Europe on powertrains, aerodynamics, brakes and tires, and combined them into an innovative sketch.

Electric powertrain, camera navigation, morphing shape with no wings needed for downforce, intelligent tires, ERS replacing disc brakes, are just some of the elements of the 'race car of the future', designed by Rinland who has a long and illustrious history in motorsports, having worked with F1 teams including Williams, Brabham, Sauber and Benetton, as well as Eagle-Toyota in IndyCar and team Opel in the German Touring Car Championship. He now runs his own consultancy company – Astauto Ltd (trading as Sergio Rinland Consulting) - working on IndyCar, GP2 and LMP sportscars, to name but a few. The consultancy is also heavily involved in simulation and alternative energy developments, electric and hybrid car projects.

Costa and Team Pelfrey Score Breakthrough Win at Mid-Ohio
Costa takes the win
Nicolas Costa overcame a severe bout of stomach cramps to score a finely judged victory in this evening's Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Grand Prix at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Round 10 of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires. The 22-year-old Brazilian fell ill last night, after claiming his first pole position yesterday for Team Pelfrey, and didn't even arrive at the track until shortly before the race as he attempted to overcome his affliction.

It was the first-ever Pro Mazda win for Costa, who rejoined the Florida-based team in May at Lucas Oil Raceway after a partial campaign in 2013.

Misfortune for Enerson hands win to Eidson
Lexington, Ohio – For the second day in a row, RC Enerson was the class of the field in the Allied Building Products Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, Round 11 of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda. But following a dramatic green/white-checkered finish in diabolical wet conditions, it was Jake Eidson who emerged to take the victory – his second of the season – for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing.

Enerson, driving the #7 Peninsula Pipeline/Patriot Bank/Tampa Bay Rays/Bell Helmets/ Sparco Van Diemen-Mazda for Team E Racing, once again managed to beat polesitter Florian Latorre (Cape Motorsports) away from the rolling start. Several incidents broke up the race with a series of full-course cautions, but each time Enerson was able to maintain his hard-won advantage.

Andretti Autosport Qualifying Quotes
Rookie Carlos Munoz made his first today  appearance in the Firestone Fast Six, and was the fastest Andretti Autosport qualifier.
Carlos Muñoz, No. 34 Cinsay Honda

"It was my first Firestone Fast Six, so I'm really happy with that. One of my goals for the year was to make it into a Fast Six, and I did it. I'm also a little disappointed, because when you have a chance to get the pole position, it's tough to feel good about finishing fourth. I'll have more shots at pole later this year, but this one was so close. I'm happy with the result - it's a great position to start the race. It's going to be a long race, and as we saw last year, strategy counts a lot here. We have to sit down and come up with a good strategy for the Cinsay car tomorrow."

Dalziel, Mills, Aschenbach Score Wins in Rain-Shortened Mid-Ohio Round 11
Hard rain made conditions treacherous
Ryan Dalziel, Michael Mills and Lawson Aschenbach have taken GT, GT-A and GTS victories in a rain-shortened Round 11 of the Pirelli World Challenge season, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Challenge Presented by StopTech.

In what was the reverse of Friday's Touring Car race, the weather conditions shifted from dry to wet, and intensifying rain forced the early conclusion to what had been a scheduled 50-minute timed race. Once the rain hit, course conditions shifted from yellow to red and checkered, and the race declared final by Race Control after a race time of 35 minutes and 55.908 seconds. The last completed lap was Lap 19.

Mid Ohio Saturday noon report (Update) UPDATE Photo below shows the heavy rain that hit Mid-Ohio.

Rain hits Mid-Ohio
08/02/14 - Practice session 3 is in the books, and Ryan Hunter-Reay was fastest by 1/10 of a second. Scott Dixon, Justin Wilson, Simon Pagenaud, and Mikhail Aleshin round out the top 5. All cars set their fastest laps of the weekend in this session, so the fastest-for-the-weekend list is identical.

- However, the numbers posted are probably a moot point. Scattered strong thunderstorms are in the area, and the weather predictions call for an 80% chance of rain. My own prediction is for 100% chance of rain, since I am tent camping this weekend here. Certainly black clouds are looming as the World Challenge race is currently underway. The forecast for 2:00 pm, when the IndyCars will qualify, call for 60% chance of thunderstorms, so there is a significant chance of qualifications in the dry-wet-moist-dry. The sudden nature of the storms will certainly make for some interesting strategies.

Watkins Glen Prez calls IndyCar business model 'insane'
Justin Wilson and Dale Coyne celebrate the team's first win at Watkins Glen in 2009.
In this Star Gazette article, Watkins Glen President Michael Printup notes that he hasn't had conversations about an IndyCar race in quite a while. He also notes that any such possibility is very remote, as the series business model is insane.

Check out the article, if you have the chance. In the meantime, we've said this before, we'll say it again.

Until INDYCAR takes an equity stake in race facilities a la the France Family with ISC/NASCAR, their options for race venues will be limited, particularly with such little television revenue to kick back to tracks. And when you further handcuff yourself by ending your season in August, when not starting earlier than March, it becomes clear why venue options are very limited for IndyCar.

Biffle's new deal with Roush is for three years
Greg Biffle spoke to the media Friday after practice in Pocono:
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT RE-SIGNING WITH ROUSH FENWAY?

"Every driver has opportunities and I was very thankful that I had plenty of opportunities. I was coming down to deciding what I was gonna do for the future from other teams and there were some interesting seats open and opportunities, but I think internally what happened is as I was deciding what I wanted to do for the future, I think Carl decided that he was gonna move on and then I needed to make a decision what I was gonna do. I've won over 55 races driving there and 19 Cup wins and I just felt like we can get this thing turned around, so I made the decision to stay and be the anchor for Roush Fenway, and do another three-year contract, regardless of sponsorship at that point. I made that commitment to stay and it's been a tough eight weeks since then. Ford Racing

I'm just having to treat it more with ice and stem and be more careful and do more stretching. Is it going to flare-up again? It could. But I'm just trying to be more cautious with the things that I do that I feel like contribute to that. But, yeah, it's not great, that's for sure. Chevy PR

Montoya interested in "The Double"
Juan Pablo Montoya says he is open to running both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600. Montoya, competing in the Verizon IndyCar Series after having spent the past seven seasons in NASCAR Sprint Cup, made the comments Friday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. "If (car owner Roger Penske) wanted me to do it, then I probably would do it," Montoya said of running both races in the same day. "It would be cool. But I don't want to force him into anything." The 2000 Indy 500 winner finished fifth in that event in May. He's not worried about the physical toll of racing 1,100 miles. "Physically I don't think it would be that hard, to be honest with you,'' Montoya said.

"If you want to do it properly, it would be a lot of fun. Their cars on a mile-and-a-half track run really, really good. If you could have a test day there or somewhere on a mile-and-a-half to get the car close to what I want and get an idea of what I want, it would be a fun experience. There are a lot of possibilities if you think about it." Motor Racing Network

British driver Tom Blomqvist claims fourth season win (Update) UPDATE For Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing), joy about his third place in the 22nd race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season at the Red Bull Ring only lasted briefly. The 16-year-old Dutchman was given a five seconds' time penalty because he had exceeded the track limits while overtaking Antonio Fuoco (Prema Powerteam) and thus got himself an unauthorized advantage. In the race classification, Verstappen drops back to fifth place. British driver Jake Dennis (Carlin) is now third, fourth place goes to Felix Rosenqvist (kfzteile24 Mucke Motorsport) from Sweden.

At the 4.326 kilometers long Red Bull Ring, the Brit benefited from a collision involving the drivers who are currently first and second in the drivers' standings, Esteban Ocon (Prema Powerteam) and Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing) and took the lead after the first corner. Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) finished second from Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing), who came third. Graham Rahal's wait for second win grows, as do frustrations

The latest on IndyCar aero-kits (Update) UPDATE Full transcript of conference

Derrick Walker's plans for aero-kits appear to be on target.
MODERATOR: Going to cover a couple of topics with Steve today that are a bit more forward-looking, the first being kind of an update, if you would, on the status of aero kits for the 2015 IndyCar season.

HPD's STEVE ERIKSEN: Aero kits are proceeding to the schedule that IndyCar has laid out. There's quite a bit of work involved in them. I think when you guys see what the aero kits look like in person, you're going to be surprised how open the rules are.

IndyCar has defined some boxes, and you have to work within the boxes. But apart from that, it's pretty open. So I think the target of having distinction between a Chevy car and a Honda car is going to be achieved, because it's so open on the rules that you're going to see quite a bit of variation, I think, between the cars – the details particularly. I think you'll end up in sort of like a sports car situation where people are going to be looking at all the little details on the car, and it's going to generate quite a bit of interest.

Force No. 1 Friday at Northwest Nationals
Force (R) defeats Hight
Ron Lewis Photography
SEATTLE, WA – After today's two qualifying sessions at the picturesque Pacific Raceways located in the shadow of majestic Mount Rainier in Washington State, John Force rebounded from his first run and ended the day rocketing to the number one spot with a mind-numbing 4.085 second run at 308.07 mph. The reigning NHRA Mello Yello Funny Car champ pocketed three qualifying bonus points for the effort. If Force stays No. 1 it will be his 150th career No. 1 extending his impressive NHRA record.

"Jimmy Prock (crew chief, Castrol GTX High Mileage Mustang) has been real consistent with this Ford, it's running really good. It got loose down on the first run, I got back in it, I had to, but it punishes the motor and that's costly in this economy but luckily, it didn't hurt it. Also, it ran through and it moved us to the back of the pack. And, temperature started dropping real fast, Jimmy stepped it up like Mile Neff on Robert's car. Unfortunately, they dropped a cylinder and didn't make a good run, but Courtney (Force) made it and Brittany's (Force) running good in the dragster," said John Force.

Devastation for Caruso - gifts Jamie Whincup double race wins
Jamie Whincup and teammate Craig Lowndes celebrate 1-2 finish
Sheer devastation for Nissan's Michael Caruso has inadvertently helped Jamie Whincup's surge further towards the V8 Supercars Championship lead after a race he never looked like winning, but somehow did.

Caruso was shattered by a late race penalty for punching into the side of Scott McLaughlin's Volvo while making a lunge for the lead, forcing a drive-through penalty that lost a race he looked almost certain to win. He also took out McLaughlin who never recovered from the contact.

While the Nissan heartbreak of going so close to victory prevented what should have been victory for all five manufacturers in 2014, it ended with the Red Bull Racing Australia team celebrating its second straight 1-2 result on the day.

NASCAR delays Homestead tire test
The Goodyear tire test at Homestead-Miami Speedway has been moved to Sept. 9, when the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field has already been set. The original test date was Aug. 26. NASCAR said Friday it was moved because too many teams already planned to test that week at Chicago. It's not been determined yet if Chase drivers will be allowed to test at Homestead, site of the season-ending race that will decide the champion. NASCAR initially said no Chase drivers could participate in the test, but all organizations represented in the Chase could attend. Teams were told to send a substitute driver instead of a Chase driver. The restrictions hurt many teams, including Team Penske, which has both of its drivers already qualified for the Chase. Lauda denies Mercedes conspiracy
Lauda claims Hamilton's car is identical to Rosberg's
Lewis Hamilton is receiving the exact same equipment as Nico Rosberg, that's according to Mercedes non-executive director Niki Lauda.

Hamilton has had the worst of Mercedes' reliability issues, a strain on his Championship chances.

In the last two races alone he has twice been penalized by issues with his W05.

He crashed out of qualifying for the German GP when a brake disc failed while a week later his car caught fire in qualifying at the Hungaroring.
