Michael Andretti: 'Formula One is a mess right now'
Michael Andretti says engineers are ruining F1
It's a mess right now, I'd say," says Michael Andretti. Michael, if you're unaware, is an IndyCar hero, and the son of 1978 Formula One world champion Mario Andretti. The 'mess' he's talking about is, of course, F1.

Speaking to TopGear.com ahead of his Formula E team's upcoming season in the electric race series, the American racing star -- who spent a year with McLaren partnering none other than Ayrton Senna -- was vocal about Formula One's current travails.

"They made a mistake allowing engineers to come up with all the rules and everything," he told TopGear.com. "I mean, it's still the biggest racing sport in the world, and it has a huge following, but they need to make some changes."

Indy: First blood to Lorenzo in FP1
Jorge Lorenzo was quickest out of the blocks after the summer break to top FP1 ahead of Marc Marquez and Andrea Dovizioso.

Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo set a 1’33.654 to top the timesheets during FP1 in glorious sunshine (26.2§C track temp) on Friday morning at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix. Times were over two seconds down on Marquez’s pole record (1’31.619) from last year as riders tried to lay some rubber down on the track in an effort to improve grip. Lorenzo showed no rustiness from the summer break as he sent out a message to his rivals, beating Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez into second by 0.093s. The reigning MotoGP World Champion Marquez was impressed by the condition of the track: "Even though the track is more slippery than other circuits, it’s consistent and already improved from the beginning to the end of this session, so it will get better and better as more rubber is laid down and the times will get faster."

Toyota: Kyle Busch Notes & Quotes
Kyle Busch won the most recent NASCAR Sprint Cup road race in June at Sonoma
KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M's Crispy Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

How much confidence do you have entering Watkins Glen after winning at Sonoma?

"It was certainly unexpected I guess in Sonoma, but I feel like I've been a pretty good road racer over the years so it wasn't surprising. Just look forward to these races. I always do every year. It's kind of fun, it's kind of a 'weekend off' from the oval stuff. Love the opportunity to get out there and turn right, turn left and have some shifting going one and everything else. You try to make the most of it and have some fun with it and come out of here with some decent finishes. Over the years we've run real well here at Watkins Glen. I think a little more so than Sonoma, but winning at Sonoma and having a really good car out there, I'm really optimistic about being here this weekend and hopefully carrying that road course momentum through to Watkins Glen."

Nissan to address LM P1 technical issues before returning to World Endurance Championship
Nissan will take a sabbatical from racing to address its LM P1 technical issues
LONDON, UK – 7 August 2015:  Nissan today announced that it will delay its return to the LM P1 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship and instead focus on technical issues that challenged its race team during the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Issues with the energy recovery system (ERS) meant that Nissan had to run at the Le Mans 24 Hours on engine power alone. The bespoke Nissan V6 3-litre twin turbo petrol engine and the unique aerodynamics of the GT-R LM NISMO proved to be the main strengths of the car at Le Mans but without a fully working ERS, many of the car's other systems were compromised.

NASCAR moves up Watkins Glen drivers' meeting
NASCAR will push the start of the driver/crew chief back to only one hour before the start of Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen. The driver/crew chief meeting will take place at 1:00pm/et. The start time listed for the race is 2:00pm/et. Typically, the driver/crew chief meeting is held two hours before the start of the race.

NASCAR states that this is an experiment for this weekend to create a shorter window between the meeting and driver introductions, which are scheduled to begin at 1:30pm/et. The driver/crew chief meeting often lasts between five and 10 minutes, depending on the number of dignitaries introduced and questions from competitors. After dignitaries are introduced, competitors watch a video outlining various rules for the race and can ask questions afterward. NBC Sports

Stewart talks about the last two years
Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart
In August 2013, Tony Stewart's right leg was nearly torn off after crashing in an Iowa sprint car race. While last August, once again racing the powerful open-wheel machines in upstate New York, he was involved in a tragic accident that cost the life of local driver Kevin Ward. Talking Wednesday to reporters in Texas, Stewart admitted those incidents, especially Ward's death, has changed his life forever.

"I don't think I'll ever be the same from what happened the last two years. I don't know how you could be. I don't know how anybody ever could be exactly back to where they were. Not being back exactly the same I was doesn't mean that I haven't become better in some ways. I think there's always positives that come out of every scenario." Stewart also added, "I'm trying to not to think about it. Unfortunately, I have a feeling it's going to be brought up a lot this week, but it doesn't help you continue to move forward with it." And BTW, today's V6 F1 cars are just as feeble.

Ferrari facing penalties for fifth engine in 2015
F1 fans, i.e. the paying customers, hate the F1 and IndyCar engine penalty rules. They don't care how many engines a driver uses, they want to see good racing.
(GMM)  Mercedes looks set to be the only manufacturer on the grid that will reach the checkered flag this year on the long-life engine rules.

So tough has the 'four engines' rule been to returning Honda, that the FIA agreed to let any new engine manufacturers in F1 enjoy an extra engine per driver in future.

And the rule was applied retroactively for McLaren's struggling Japanese supplier.

"The decision encourages new power unit suppliers to enter formula one," said Honda's Yasuhisa Arai.

F1 teams disagree over 'super super-soft' tire test

That is the claim of Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, following recent reports that the Italian tire supplier is set to introduce a special fifth tire compound next year just for street circuits.

"The soft tires that we use for street tracks need some attention -- Monaco, Canada, Singapore need really soft compounds, softer than the super-soft that we use today," Pirelli's Paul Hembery revealed recently.

MotoGP vs. IndyCar: Pedrosa and Andretti exhibition race
Marco Andretti
Thursday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will see a MotoGP vs. IndyCar 'exhibition race' featuring Dani Pedrosa and Marco Andretti.

The event, to help publicize this weekend's MotoGP round, is described as follows: "For the first time, we will put face to face the fury of a MotoGP bike with the lightness and speed of an IndyCar.

"Dani Pedrosa (SPA) and Marco Andretti (USA) will get the most out of their engines at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Oval. American Nicky Hayden will be the judge on this amazing contest."

It is expected that Pedrosa and Andretti will compete one lap of the road course together, ending with a 'drag race' from the final turn to the finish line. Hayden will throw the green flag as 'Marshall'.

An IndyCar has a turbocharged 2.2-litre V6 engine, producing 700 horsepower and a top speed of 230mph. It weighs 700kg.

Pedrosa's Repsol Honda has a 1000cc V4 engine, producing in excess of 240 horsepower and a top speed of 217mph. It weighs 158kg.

The event is scheduled to take place at 5pm.

28-year-old Marco is the son of Michael Andretti and grandson of Mario Andretti. He is a double IndyCar race winner and currently seventh in this year's championship.

NASCAR revises warnings system
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams will now face only the loss of pit stall selection for multiple warnings, according to a bulletin issued to teams by the sanctioning body Wednesday. The change removes the potential for multiple warnings to result in the escalation of the severity of the penalty (to a P1 level or higher), and eliminates all but one of the penalty options previously included in the 2015 NASCAR Deterrence Policy under the warnings category.

For every fourth warning issued to a team, whether during a championship (points) or non-championship (non-points) event, the loss of pit stall selection will be enforced. If the fourth warning is issued before pit selection has occurred, the loss of pit selection will be assessed at that event. If the fourth warning occurs after pit selection has already taken place, the penalty will be enforced at the next points event.

No penalty for Karam after Honda Indy 200 spin
Karam continues to ruffle the establishment
Juan Pablo Montoya thought Sage Karam had spun out on purpose during Sunday's Honda Indy 200. So, too, did a number of Verizon IndyCar Series fans. Unsurprisingly, Race Control disagreed.

The league issued its weekly post-race infractions report on Wednesday, and Karam's name was not on it. The biggest infraction was Dale Coyne Racing's Rodolfo Gonzalez being fined for a visor miscue. There was not even a mention of the solo spin that prompted a caution and that led NBCSN commentator - and fellow IndyCar driver - Townsend Bell to call it "a little suspicious."

Haas F1 on schedule
Guenther Steiner doesn't rate American drivers and has no plans to hire one for the American team
After deferring its entry by a year, Haas F1 Team is poised to join the grid next season. GPUpdate.net caught up with Team Principal Guenther Steiner to discuss progress, potential drivers and early targets.

With entry granted in April last year, Steiner has since been working tirelessly to establish operations, secure technical deals and hire key personnel. If there are no amendments, the outfit is seven months away from the opening pre-season test of 2016, with the season itself kicking off four weeks later.

While current Formula 1 teams are enjoying a four-week summer break, Haas F1 remains hard at work as it bids to tick off a sizeable checklist and hit the ground running.

NASCAR prepared to run in the rain at Watkins Glen
NASCAR in the rain at Watkins Glen would be hilarious
NASCAR in the rain at Watkins Glen would be hilarious
For the second time this season, NASCAR will bring a new rain package to a road course for the Sprint Cup tour. Last September, the sanctioning body introduced new rules for racing in inclement weather. While it seldom rains at Sonoma, the chance to use windshield wipers, de-foggers, a rear flashing light and rain tires with the cars will be more likely this weekend at Watkins Glen. Last Wednesday, NASCAR sent out a bulletin to the teams updating Rule 10.13 Inclement Weather Race Procedures (Road Course Events). According to the note, should it rain, it will be up to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Managing Director to determine whether the track surface is "dry, wet or damp". At that point in the race, teams will be able to use "mandated or approved use of "wet" or "dry" condition equipment during competition."

Renault Decision To Buy Lotus F1 Team Doesn't Hinge On Payments From Ecclestone
Will Renault buy Lotus and make it their 'factory' team?
Renault's decision over whether to buy the Lotus F1 team does not depend on the amount of money it receives from F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone, according to Charles Bradley of Motorsport.

The French car company is "currently in an evaluation process over its future in F1," as its plans for '17 and beyond potentially involve it "buying out the Lotus team and entering under its own name as it has done previously."

Discussions have been ongoing for some time, and Renault Chair & CEO Carlos Ghosn will reportedly "make the final call after reviewing the options in the coming weeks." Ecclestone recently confirmed that a Renault takeover "would not automatically trigger extra payments based on its past performance and historical record."

Haas' approach to 2016, however, has been controversial, as Dallara is helping with the chassis that will boast many Ferrari components, even though 'customer cars' are technically not allowed.

Lauda doubts Bianchi tribute caused Hamilton slump
When his car isn't superior to everyone else's, Hamilton tends to make mistakes
(GMM)  Niki Lauda has played down suggestions the Jules Bianchi tragedy may have contributed to Lewis Hamilton's bad performance in Hungary.

As Mercedes failed to make the podium for the first time in the new 'power unit' era, Hamilton apologized to the team and admitted he was "all over the place".

"I don't know if it was a lack of concentration or what," the reigning world champion, and 2015 championship leader, added.

Just prior to the start of the race, the drivers congregated at the front of the grid for a minute's silence with Jules Bianchi's parents, a few days after many - including Hamilton - attended their late rival's funeral in Nice.

Kaufmann talks to the press
A brief statement by Michael Waltrip Racing co-owner Rob Kauffman raised more questions than it provided answers about the future of MWR. Earlier in the week, a statement released by MWR indicated Kaufmann was buying into Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, fueling speculation that driver Clint Bowyer and sponsor 5-Hour Energy would move to Ganassi.

Standing behind the hauler of the #55 MWR Toyota driven by David Ragan, however, Kauffman gave the impression that co-owner Michael Waltrip was somehow involved in the process and that there might be synergy between the two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series organizations. "First and foremost, the thing that's important to realize is that Michael Waltrip and I co-own Michael Waltrip Racing together," Kauffman said.
