Franchitti, Kanaan and Wilson to lead drivers group  Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan and Justin Wilson have been chosen as the leaders of a new Izod IndyCar Series drivers organization.

The three veteran drivers will compile the concerns and suggestions of their peers and present a single voice to series officials. The group is similar to the Championship Drivers Association used in the Champ Car World Series.

Kanaan said the goal is “to work with the league, not against it.

The IRL needs to make the rules and we need to follow them,” he said. “That’s why rules are rules.”

Tiny Martinsville keeps 2 Cup races  Martinsville Speedway will again host two NASCAR Sprint Cup races in 2011, but both  races will be a week later than in recent years.

NASCAR announced today that the Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 is scheduled for Sunday, April 3 while the TUMS Fast Relief 500 will be held on Sunday, October 30.

“There was quite a bit of shuffling in the schedule for next year and we are really pleased with the new dates NASCAR has for us,” said Martinsville Speedway President W. Patrick would struggle in F1 - Liuzzi  UPDATE A reader adds, Danica can't even squeeze out good results in a car she is very familiar with prepared by one of the top teams in the series so does anyone really think she has a snow balls chance in hell in ANY car in the F1 paddock? Has anyone counted how many times Simona De Silvestro has out-qualified her this year in a low budget team while Danica is with one of the top IndyCar teams? She has skills but they seem to be more in the marketing field than on the grid. Mark Bartlett

08/13/10 Force India driver Tonio Liuzzi thinks that it would be a tough ask for a female driver to succeed in Formula One due to the physical and psychological demands of the sport.

Bernie Ecclestone said that somebody like Danica Patrick would be 'a perfect advert' for the sport in a recent interview on the official F1 website. But Liuzzi thinks Patrick, who has raced mainly on Oval circuits in America, would find it hard to adapt to Formula One. More ...

Klien eyes race with HRT in 2010, full seat in 2011  (GMM)  With just three months and seven races remaining in 2010, Christian Klien is not ruling out making an appearance or two on this year's formula one grid.

After starting its difficult debut season with Karun Chandhok alongside Bruno Senna, both of the Spanish team HRT's original drivers have been rested in order to make way for the well-funded Sakon Yamamoto.

Japanese Yamamoto now appears to be the permanent occupant of Chandhok's old seat, while Senna insists his contract guarantees him the remainder of the season.

But Klien, another of HRT's contracted drivers, remains hopeful.

  • Valentino Rossi says he will reveal on Sunday which manufacturer he will ride for in 2011.
  • Marc Marquez dislocated his left shoulder in a crash at the end of the 125cc practice session at Brno today.
  • Randy de Puniet will make his MotoGP comeback at Brno this weekend, after passing a fitness test on the leg he broke at the Sachsenring.
  • Casey Stoner was downbeat about his prospects of victory at Brno this weekend, despite having finished on the podium in the last four MotoGP races.
  • Jorge Lorenzo set the fastest time of the opening MotoGP practice session ahead of this weekend's race at Brno. With rain forecast to arrive at Brno - the Czech Republic’s second largest city - at some stage over the weekend, it was important for the MotoGP riders to make good use of today’s largely dry practice session. Indeed with ten minutes to go in the hour-long session a few spots began to fall, effectively ending the practice as the riders ducked into the pits.

Fans buying into Sprint Cup race in Kentucky  Mark Simendinger fully expected some fervent fan reaction to come Kentucky Speedway's direction once it was announced Tuesday the track would host a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race next July 9.

But when the Speedway's general manager tried to find out the scope of the response, he ran into a slight problem.

"Let me put it this way, when I tried to call our ticket manager, I couldn't get through to him. And I called him again this morning and I still couldn't get through," Simendinger said Thursday. "It's been crazy. I can't even get through to find out how we're doing." More ...

Red Bull committed to NASCAR; open to 3 teams in 2011  Red Bull Racing Vice President and General Manager Jay Frye told Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody that there is no truth to rumors that Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz may pull the plug on the team. "There is a huge commitment from Austria to this program," said Frye. "Red Bull came here in 2006 as an owner and a sponsor, and they have done everything right. It's become a joke in our team meetings every month. I usually have to say, `Everything's fine, don't believe the rumors.' I guess it's a compliment that they're talking about us, but it's also bothersome. There is a long term commitment by Red Bull to doing this program," Frye said. "They want to win and compete at a high level. That's their expectation, and we feel the same way. We still young with a ways to go, but getting a guy like Kasey Kahne -- even for one year -- makes us better. This team isn't going anywhere." Frye also said that options exist for the team to field three Toyotas for Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers and Scott Speed, if necessary. Vickers is still months away from knowing whether he will be able to return to the cockpit in 2011, and Frye confirmed that the team is still evaluating Speed's performance, before making a final decision on his status for next season. Revised NASCAR schedule hurts NHRA race  A thread on the popular drag racing website Nitromater.com is titled: “Are we second fiddle?”

It refers to the U.S. motor sports pecking order where NASCAR is No. 1 and NHRA a distant second.

The writer is not happy about a revision to the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule that moves a race at Phoenix International Raceway from mid-April to the second race of the 2011 season on Feb. 27. The move was made after the date opened when Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., lost one of its two Cup races on what traditionally had been the weekend after the Daytona 500 opener. More ...

Brickyard 400 moved back a week, Kentucky an issue  UPDATE Geographically, Kentucky Speedway is about 120 miles from Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but its proximity as it relates to selling NASCAR tickets is difficult to measure.

In 2011, the tracks will have Sprint Cup Series races in the same month. Kentucky's new one is set for July 9; the Brickyard 400 is scheduled July 31.

The Brickyard date is a week later than this year, coming after an open weekend in the Sprint Cup calendar.

Assuming Kentucky Speedway owner Bruton Smith delivers on his promise to nearly double the seating capacity at the track not far from Vevay, Ind. -- from 66,000 to 116,000 -- the tracks will have a combined 373,000 tickets to sell for races just three weeks apart. More ...

Bernie: NY USGP just a pipe dream  Bernie Ecclestone says he is open to the possibility of again holding two United States-based grands prix, but admits hopes of a New York race are currently a “pipe dream”.

Since Austin was in May confirmed as the new home of the revived US Grand Prix from 2012, there have been continued suggestions that F1 needs to establish an additional race in the country in order to increase its presence in the American market.

F1 supremo Ecclestone has long held the ambition of staging a grand prix in New York, and prior to the announcement of the Austin deal details emerged of plans for a possible race in Monticello.

The United States last held multiple F1 races in 1976-84 and Ecclestone says that could happen again, although stressed that, irrespective of where the sport also went, Austin would remain the official home of the US GP.

“Let’s make one thing clear: Austin will be the US Grand Prix,” he told the official F1 website.

Don't drive in Switzerland  Swedish driver is facing a record-breaking $1.013 million speeding ticket after being clocked at more than 186mph in Switzerland.

Speeding fines are calculated by taking into account the income of the motorist and the speed at which they were driving.

According to prosecutors, he is now facing the highest possible penalty of 300 days of fines at $3,376 a day – a total of $1.013M.

The driver was behind the wheel of a $250,000, 197mph Mercedes-Benz SLS on the A12 motorway between Bern and Lausanne on Friday.

Too fast to pay
However, the driver might consider himself fortunate to not be in more trouble, because Swiss prosecutors revealed he could well have been caught by many other speed cameras on the route – had he not been driving beyond the speed they operate. Old-style Swiss radar devices do not operate above 125mph.

Previous record fine
The $1.013M fine is thought to be the world's largest. In January, a Ferrari driver was fined $283,700 after being caught driving at 85mph in a 50mph zone - again in Switzerland.

You've been warned - avoid Switzerland or ride the train.  The police in Switzerland are known as revenuers - they generate revenue to justify their existence by handing out huge speeding fines, rather than fighting real crime.  Writing a revenue invoice to an unsuspecting motorist is safer than pursuing murderers and drug dealers where they might actually get themselves hurt.

Judge denies Mayfield request to reverse decision  U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen, who in May dismissed Jeremy Mayfield's claims against NASCAR over a May 2009 drug test that NASCAR said was positive for methamphetamines, issued a ruling Thursday denying a request from Mayfield to vacate the decision. Mullen had ruled in May that Mayfield had waived most of his rights to sue NASCAR when he signed the NASCAR-driver agreement and NASCAR-owner agreement. He also indicated that Mayfield did not have enough evidence to support his claims. "Plaintiffs have repeatedly asserted that they can and will bring viable claims of tortious interference with contractual or business relations, but have yet to state a single example as to how they will do this or submit a proposed amended complaint," the judge wrote in his decision released Thursday. "Plaintiffs maintain in their motion they are 'confident' that they can bring valid claims for tortious interference unrelated to NASCAR's substance abuse policy, yet in their next sentence Plaintiffs state that these 'causes of action must involve implementation of the policy. The logical inconsistencies in Plaintiffs' arguments are further compounded by the fact that they propose no specific amendments to their prior claims and have not shown how any amended complaint would remedy the many other deficiencies that caused the Court to dismiss Plaintiffs' claims. As Plaintiffs have failed to hint at any additional allegations upon which relief could be granted, granting Plaintiffs' leave to amend will be an exercise in futility." Scene Daily

Automaker Tunnels Their Way to Better Fuel Efficiency
Engineers say there are three ways to improve a vehicle's gas mileage: reduce its weight, increase efficiency of the powertrain and improve the aerodynamics. This month General Motors is celebrating an important milestone in achieving better fuel economy, the 30th anniversary of the world's largest wind tunnel. In response to the oil embargo of the 1970's and the introduction of the Federal Fuel Economy Standards, the automaker built the wind tunnel dedicated to the design and aerodynamic profile of automobiles.

Powered by a 4,500 horsepower fan, the tunnel generates speeds up to 138 miles per hour during testing. They credit the tunnel for improving the aerodynamics of their passenger cars by 25%. In addition to developing the aerodynamic shapes of cars, the tunnel has also started working on noise reduction and measuring airflow. One of the latest advances is the new louver system, an innovative feature in the lower grill which opens and closes based on engine cooling needs. The system lowers the overall drag, increasing aerodynamic efficiency by 10% and significantly improving highway fuel economy. This new feature will soon be available on the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco. Cars hacked through wireless tire sensors  The tire pressure monitors built into modern cars have been shown to be insecure by researchers from Rutgers University and the University of South Carolina. The wireless sensors, compulsory in new automobiles in the US since 2008, can be used to track vehicles or feed bad data to the electronic control units (ECU), causing them to malfunction.

Earlier in the year, researchers from the University of Washington and University of California San Diego showed that the ECUs could be hacked, giving attackers the ability to be both annoying, by enabling wipers or honking the horn, and dangerous, by disabling the brakes or jamming the accelerator. Bernie wants Danica  UPDATE Will Bernie insist that Danica be dressed in white like all the other domestic appliances (see related article)?  At that time Danica Patrick was upset at Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone and confused by his comments likening women to “domestic appliances.”

Patrick received a telephone call from Ecclestone during which he congratulated the Indy Racing League rookie for her performance at the Indianapolis 500 that year, but also reiterated remarks he had made during an interview at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the U.S. Grand Prix was being held.

Among the comments Ecclestone made in the interview and to Patrick was that “Women should be all dressed in white like all other domestic appliances.”

Ecclestone has made controversial remarks about women before. He told Autosport racing magazine in 2000 that women could not compete in Formula One, but if one did, “she would have to be a woman who was blowing away the boys. ... 08/11/10 With plans for the 2012 US Grand Prix at Austin, Texas, continuing apace, Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone and event promoter Tavo Hellmund are sure that the addition of an American driver on the grid would also be a good thing for the sport.

F1 has been without an American driver since Scott Speed left the Toro Rosso team in 2007 and Ecclestone thinks that one driver in particular would create a lot of interest.

"Regarding an American driver, we have tried that lately but obviously what's missing is the right attitude," Ecclestone told the official F1 website. "You can race successfully in the US without the huge effort you need to succeed in Formula One. But to have someone like Danica Patrick in F1 would be a perfect advert." More ...

New Hampshire date moved to August 2011  The IZOD IndyCar Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2011 has been moved to Aug. 14, speedway executive vice president and general manager Jerry Gappens said.

The race will be the first at the 1-mile oval in 13 years for IndyCars.

"Because of the date changes with our NASCAR weekends, we had to move this much-anticipated event from its originally announced July 31 date to Aug. 14," Gappens said. Soucek leaves Virgin Racing  Reigning FIA Formula Two Champion Andy Soucek has left his role as test and reserve driver for the Virgin Racing F1 team following a mutual agreement with the squad, allowing the Spaniard to seek new racing opportunities.

Soucek secured his Formula One seat at the start of the season after striking a late deal with Virgin Racing, which unfortunately permitted him no time behind the wheel of the VR-01 before the F1 testing ban came into force. Current F1 regulations have also prevented Andy from having any tracktime in the car during the 2010 season. More ...

Toyota ok with having Kahne for only one year  Some people claim it's impossible for a future Hendrick/GM driver to run under a different manufacturer. But consider Hendrick isn't exactly a full-time Chevy guy, either. He has a handful of Toyota dealerships, just like he sells Dodges and BMWs, too. "Rick Hendrick is a friend to our company," said Toyota President Lee White, who immediately pointed out those connections and reconfirmed his company's commitment to Red Bull through 2012. So there was no need for Hendrick to even jump over the Toyota hurdle, as White didn't know of any potential signing until the weekend of Watkins Glen. Some might wonder how Toyota ends up a winner despite only having Kahne for one year. But in talking to White, he emphasized how growing organizations like Red Bull need to have drivers with the veteran experience to win races. "With this economy, you don't own people," he said, stressing the fact one year could lead to long-term benefits for Red Bull. "All we care about is a driver's potential to win races." That's why White gave Red Bull his blessing, stressing the ability for a team to make its own decisions. And with a Red Bull/Toyota commitment that lasts through 2012, he hopes for long-term improvement while looking forward to milking the Kahne connection for all its worth. "I can't wait to see the sponsifier commercial for Kahne," he joked about the popular award-winning campaign for the manufacturer. Sports Illustrated

NHTSA finds no electronic defect in Toyotas  Federal investigators said Tuesday an initial review indicates driver error -- not electronics -- is to blame in a majority of cases they probed for suspected unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles.

Representatives of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told members of Congress that brakes weren't applied in 35 of the 58 cases they reviewed -- suggesting motorists hit the accelerator when they intended to apply the brake pedal.

The preliminary findings, based on so-called black box data taken from vehicles, may bolster Toyota Motor Co.'s long-held assertion that there is nothing wrong with its cars' electronics. Toyota maintains that motorists or mechanical glitches are responsible for thousands of reports of unintended acceleration. More ...

Wilson to wear cast and brace  The X-rays were negative but Justin Wilson still had problems gripping the steering wheel during last weekend’s Izod IndyCar Series race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

As the series prepares for the next race, on Aug. 22 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., Wilson will have a cast and a brace for his right thumb, which was injured in a qualifying-session crash with Ryan Briscoe. Wilson tore ligaments in the thumb during the initial contact with Briscoe.

Wilson had the thumb wrapped for the Honda Indy 200 last weekend, but couldn’t grasp the wheel as he is accustomed to. That likely didn’t help when he tried to make an evasive move to avoid hitting E.J. Viso during the race. That crash ended both of their races.

The Infineon race is IndyCar’s last of the season on a road or street course. The final four events of the year are on oval tracks.

Upgrades planned for Kentucky Speedway  Yes, it's official. Kentucky Speedway will host its first Cup race on Saturday night, July 9, 2011. But Bruton Smith's just getting started. Before he could get the huge banner outside the front gate unrolled he was lobbying the governor to build an airport large enough to land 747s on these sprawling hills. "All you camera guys, are you looking at me?" Smith said as he began his rundown of planned improvements. "Look at me!" Smith then promised to spend between $90 million and $100 million expanding seating capacity from 66,000 to 116,000, building new restrooms, adding 200 more acres of campground space and putting in more elevators. When you see what he has accomplished already and what he promises, you almost believe one day he'll convince NASCAR to move the season finale from Homestead-Miami Speedway to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Schumacher did not apologize personally - Barrichello
2004 French GP podium  - when they were Ferrari teammates for years Schumacher (center - winner) beat Barrichello (right) in qualifying and the race week in and week out.  Rumor has it that Schumacher pushed Barrichello toward the wall at the last race because he had been mouthing off in the press trying to make himself look better.  Barrichello did beat Schumacher once - at the USGP when Schumacher backed off coming to the flag and gifted him the win.

Stremme leaves #26 team  David Stremme has quit his ride with Latitude 43 Motorsports, alleging that team owner Bill Jenkins has failed to meet his financial obligations and is doing little to help the team improve. We've been trying to put that program together," said Stremme. "We always had to do more with less, but in the last month and a half, ownership hasn't really wanted to make things better. Bill Jenkins has not been willing to make the correct decisions, and it has affected the performance of the team. We've barely been making it to track the last few weeks. At Pocono, we didn't even know if we were going to have tires to race on. "I went to Bill and said `If things aren't going to change, I don't think I want to stay involved.' We discussed a timeline for him to find another driver and agreed that we would look at things again after Bristol. But he immediately started calling around trying to replace me. He apparently wanted to find someone else right now, and that's fine. It's his choice." Jenkins admitted his first-year team has struggled to find sponsorship this season, saying, "We are in a funding fight every day, and we haven't been able to fund the team at the level David expected. We've had some good things happen, and some bad things. We had to pull a sponsor off the car two weeks ago after a conflict emerged between their products and Sprint. We were counting on them to help get us over the hump, but those are the bumps in the road that you hit." Last week, former Latitude 43 Motorsports driver Boris Said revealed that he is unhappy with the way he was treated by Jenkins. "There's no real polite way to say this, but Bill Jenkins owes me a bunch of money," he said. Asked if he expects to have any relationship with the team going forward, Said replied, "Jenkins hasn't returned my phone calls, so I guess not. It's a bad deal for me." Asked if he is owed money by Latitude 43, Stremme said, "There are obligations to both me and the team that have not been met, and that was a big part of my decision to leave. I don't want to be involved with something like that. I dealt with Jenkins with respect, and was straightforward with him at all times. I didn't get that in return." Sirius Speedway

Jeff Gordon’s ex-wife, Brooke, involved in custody battle  UPDATE A petition to change the boy’s last name from Gordon to Dixon was approved last Tuesday by the Mecklenburg County clerk of courts in Charlotte.

07/20/10 A Charlotte man who fathered a child last year with Jeff Gordon’s former wife, Brooke Gordon, is now involved in a custody dispute that has included whether the child should have the last name of the Hendrick Motorsports driver.

James Dixon II has filed requests in North Carolina District Court in Charlotte to have Brooke Gordon agree to change the child’s name and for Brooke Gordon to provide him with support to help raise the child.

A proposed settlement offered by his lawyer that is filed with the court documents has suggested $10,000 a month, while a separate letter has also suggested a house valued between $1.2 million and $1.5 million and a Mercedes Benz.

The former Brooke Gordon, meanwhile, got married in May to former South Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mullins McLeod, who is not the father of the boy.

As of now, the child’s last name is Gordon – as in Jeff Gordon, the four-time Cup champion who was once married to Brooke, a former Miss Winston he met in victory lane after winning a Daytona 500 qualifying race in February 1993. More at Scenedaily.com

You too can own an F1 car  Lotus Cars has revealed the ultimate track day car for wealthy enthusiasts. And instead of following the Ferrari route and creating a GT car with F1 heritage - in other words the FXX – it has made an out and out single seater.

The Exos Type 125, unveiled at Monterey this week, is powered by a Cosworth V8 that’s good for 650bhp and can do 3000 miles or so between rebuilds.

What’s more the car can be started by the driver, as opposed to requiring a fleet of lap top wielding technicians.

Lotus expects to sell 25 of these amazing machines for $1m a pop. Customers will be able to choose their own liveries, and the company will even be offering versions reflecting Gold Leaf, JPS and Camel heritage…

NASCAR popularity continues to wane  After years of jam-packed races, sky-high television ratings and record merchandise sales, Nascar has seen attendance at nearly every track slip this year as recession-weary fans continue to cut costs (Editor's Note: This year?  It has been dropping for 4 straight years).

Fans watched a Sprint Cup race last weekend at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.  The Behler family could see that firsthand while sitting atop their old school bus in the infield at Pocono Raceway for last week’s race in Long Pond, Pa. From that perch, they saw empty patches of grass with untrampled dandelions that in years past were covered by other spectators’ cars, campers and trailers.

Fans like the Behlers who are showing up to races are spending less, too. More ...

Montoya's Win at The Glen is ECR's First NASCAR Road Course Victory  Earnhardt-Childress Racing Engines scored a victory in one of NASCAR's three main touring series for the seventh time in six consecutive weekends when Juan Pablo Montoya took the checkered flag in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

The win by Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing's No. 42 Target Chevrolet team was also ECR's first road course victory in NASCAR competition.

"Congratulations to Juan, Brian (Pattie, crew chief) and the entire Earnhardt-Ganassi organization," said Richie Gilmore, COO of Earnhardt-Childress Racing Engines. "They've been running well all season, so it's great to see them get the win at Watkins Glen. All in all, the ECR teams had another strong weekend - in the Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series and the Camping World Truck Series - to continue the streak of solid performances across the board. We're winning races and our teams are also qualifying regularly on the front row in all three series. We just need to keep up the momentum heading into the final few months of the season." More ...

Return to podium boosts Clarke's confidence  For the past few seasons, Dan Clarke has been in racing's version of limbo. Without a regular ride, he picked up whatever drives he could and stayed as visible as possible in the IZOD IndyCar Series paddock as one of the many drivers walking the pit lane.

That all changed earlier this year when veteran team owner Derrick Walker tabbed Clarke as the driver of his team's No. 40 Wasteco Deans Knight Special in Firestone Indy Lights, beginning with round two at Barber Motorsports Park.

While his early results were solid, he's become more and more of a threat to win as he's gotten more and more comfortable with the series. More ...

Villeneuve annoyed that F1 team plans leaked  (GMM)  Jacques Villeneuve has admitted to being annoyed that his plans for a formula one team were publicly leaked.

The 1997 world champion is bidding to re-enter the sport as a constructor next year in collaboration with the Italian former GP2 outfit Durango.

But Germany's Auto Bild quoted Villeneuve, 39, as indicating he sees it as an unfair advantage that his opponents for the 13th team entry have not been similarly outed.

It is believed the only other contenders for the grid space are Stefan GP and Epsilon Euskadi.

Old Pirelli reputation is 'living in past' - Hembery  (GMM)  Pirelli racing boss Paul Hembery has played down suggestions the tire marque has a bad reputation when it comes to formula one.

Even though a Pirelli-shod car won a grand prix during the company's last F1 foray in 1991, some figures have suggested that the tires supplied during that period were inconsistent.

"Some people like to live in the past," Hembery is quoted by Germany's Auto Bild.

"Of course we had this problem, but what we had developed was a very aggressive qualifying tire.  In the last 20 years, the rules and technologies have changed significantly," he added.

Another suggestion is that F1's selection of Pirelli as Bridgestone's official supplier successor is a risk. More ...

Power slams Milka  IndyCar officials put Milka Duno on probation two weeks ago, telling her she needs to get up to speed if she wants to be allowed to compete in the series.

If the officials thought the message would keep Duno out of trouble, they were wrong. Duno started from the back of the 27-car field after being held out of qualifying on Saturday but still found a way to mix it up. She was nearing the final turn on the 2.258-mile circuit midway through the race when Power and Castroneves came up behind her. Both struggled to slip past, with Castroneves making a late turn into the pits to avoid a mishap. "She was hard to predict what she's going to do," Power said. "Luckily I got by her."

Yet the bobble also allowed Franchitti to slightly extend his lead on his way to victory. "That sort of ruined any chance I had of passing him in the pits during the pit stop," Power said. "Don't know what else to say."

Peter Windsor resurfaces  Peter Windsor, co-founder of the stillborn USF1 project, has resurfaced as a Grand Prix analyst for e-magazine GP Week, having spent the last five months out of the public eye. The 58-year-old had been the pitlane reporter for Speed TV and Grand Prix editor of F1 Racing before moving to USF1 full-time at the end of last season, but has now returned to journalism with GP Week.

“I'm delighted to be contributing to GPWEEK on a regular basis,” said Windsor. “On-line media in my view is the future for F1 and motor sport in general. GPWEEK reflects the enthusiasm and passion of its founders and in many ways takes me right back to my roots. I'm looking forward to sharing my love of the sport with a global audience that's growing by the week.”

Windsor will write an analysis piece one week after each Grand Prix, while the e-zine will also publish a full-length interview with the Englishman next Monday detailing where it all went wrong with USF1. The interview is the first he has conducted since USF1 failed to make it to the grid at the Bahrain Grand Prix in March.

Domenicali 'dumbstruck' by F1 'hypocrisy'  Stefano Domenicali has lashed out at the hypocrisy in F1 after Ferrari were found guilty of use team orders and accused of running an illegal front wing. In recent weeks, Ferrari have made headlines for several of the wrong reasons. The first was their blatant use of team orders in the German GP where the Scuderia ordered Felipe Massa to move over and hand the victory to his team-mate Fernando Alonso. The Italian outfit was slapped with a $100,000 fine by the race stewards and will now have to face the World Motor Sport Council on 8th September where they could be stripped of their German GP points or even banned.

That, though, hasn't be the only controversy facing the team as they have also been accused of running illegal front wings. According to McLaren, both Ferrari and Red Bull have wings that flex beyond the legal limit, allowing them greater downforce and better speed. And although the FIA did checks on the wings at the German GP, declaring them legal, motorsport's governing body is now set to introduce more stringent testing at the Belgian GP as the debate refuses to die down.

"I was dumbstruck to see so much hypocrisy in our world, but I don't want to add anything else: there will just be more work to do; who knows it might be an added distraction for some," the team boss told Ferrari's official website. More ...

Button battles through tonsillitis as F1 rivals holiday
(GMM)  Jenson Button struggled through the London Triathlon on Sunday with tonsillitis.

But the reigning world champion still finished third in his class, despite admitting to having "suffered quite a bit" whilst under the effect of antibiotics.

His time of 2hr14mins was about 25 minutes behind the ultimate winner, and seven minutes slower than his 2009 time.

"I wasn't feeling very well at the start of the week, which is why I have come in a bit slower than last time round," said the 30-year-old.

The Olympic-length event consists of a 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run.

F1 is currently in the midst of its August break, including two-week factory shutdowns, so most of Button's rivals are on holiday.

Mark Webber is on the Cote d'Azur, Robert Kubica is planning to travel between the south of France and Tuscany, Jarno Trulli is in Miami and Vitantonio Liuzzi on the Greek holiday island Mykonos. More ...

There were no serious injuries.  The three struck were Mike Briggs, a fueler, Anna Chatten, the air jack crew member.; and Chris Bennett, the left front tire changer from Indianapolis. Moraes ran over Chatten's foot and he hit Bennett's knee.

Justin Wilson injured his right thumb on Saturday when he collided with Ryan Briscoe during the second qualifying session.

Briscoe was trying to squeeze one more qualifying lap in the session when Wilson ran into him from behind. The two drivers briefly exchanged words and they each shoved each other. Briscoe called Wilson's move "desperate."

"We're all hustling to get around, just because your lap is screwed doesn't mean you have to take the guy out," Briscoe said.  Wilson accepted Briscoe's handshake, but he did so with his left hand because his right one was aching and swollen. X-rays were negative, but Wilson felt some pain in his thumb.

Briscoe will start seventh while Wilson will start 11th if his thumb is ok. A decision will be made this morning.
