Brabham Clinches Pro Mazda Championship at Trois-Rivieres
Matthew Brabham
With his commanding performance in the Grand Prix of Trois-Rivieres doubleheader this weekend, Matthew Brabham of Andretti Autosport has clinched the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires title with two races still remaining. His season has sent record books flying. Brabham’s 11th win aboard the #83 MAZDASPEED entry more than bested the record he recently broke of nine race wins in a season set by Jack Hawksworth last year.

The 19-year-old reigning Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda champion also holds the record for the most consecutive wins in a season at seven, the record for most podiums in a season at 13 – again besting Hawksworth as well as 2010 champ Conor Daly – and is tied with Hawksworth for fastest race laps in a season at 11.

Brabham doubles up at Trois-Rivieres
Brabham motors to another win
Coming to the twin checkers more than five seconds ahead of second place during Race Two at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres, Matthew Brabham clinched his 11th win and 13th podium this year - both of which are new records for either in one season of Pro Mazda competition. With this victory, the American is now the Pro Mazda Champion of 2013 with two races remaining in Houston on October 5 and 6.

"What an awesome year - I could not have predicted a season like this," said an elated Brabham.

"I'm so happy for the team and all my supporters... everyone has worked so hard and it has been perfect. I really have to thank Andretti Autosport and also Mazda for the wonderful year. I'm really happy and I'm enjoying the moment."

Ferrari’s wind tunnel problems still hampering progress
Ferrari has blamed a lack of correlation between wind tunnel results and on track performance for their recent slip in form.

The Scuderia has seen it hopes of challenging defending champions Red Bull fall away at recent races, without a win since May’s Spanish Grand Prix, the team had now dropped to third behind Mercedes in the Constructors Championship and sits just ahead of Lotus, who are 9 points adrift.

The Start
Matthew Brabham continued his domination of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires this afternoon with a perfect script in Race 1 of the Grand Prix of Trois-Rivieres. The Andretti Autosport driver started on pole, managed a perfect getaway in only the second standing start of the season and led all 40 green-flag laps to claim his 10th win of the year. Adding an exclamation point by posting the fastest lap of the race aboard the #83 MAZDASPEED entry, the 19-year-old came away with maximum points to extend his championship lead to 73 points over Diego Ferreira of Juncos Racing.

Franchitti working on new book 'The Romance of Racing'
Dario Franchitti's new book cover
Three-time Indy 500 winner and four-time champion has a new book coming out in late November. The publication, a joint project with friend and former editor of Autosport and RACER magazines, is a collection of essays written by the Scot about legends, his heroes and friends in racing from the 1950s to date.

The high-quality 128-page coffee table book is illustrated by some of the sport’s finest photographers’ archives including Cahier, Getty Images, LAT Photographic and Sutton Images as well as gifted individuals. The foreword has been written by double World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi, and there is a special contribution from triple title winner Sir Jackie Stewart OBE.

“The book has been a great trip down memory lane for me,” says Franchitti, who is a great fan of motorsport history. “Making it, we treated it almost like a conversation. Andy would send me some pictures, and they usually triggered something that would form the basis of the essay. The quality of the pictures is remarkable, and it’s very easy to get lost in the moment and step back in time.”

A pre-launch campaign is in place until September 29, and there are a handful of versions of the books up for grabs, from the basic book, to one with the supporter’s name on a limited edition cover, up to a signed book, which is limited to 50.

Stewart replacement to be announced Monday
As told to you first by AR1.com readers, Stewart will be out a long time
A rather solemn looking Greg Zipadelli told reporters Friday that in his initial conversations with injured driver and team owner Tony Stewart this week, the three-time NASCAR champ was in good spirits but more concerned with his team and the whole Stewart-Haas Racing organization than with his own injuries.

"He was in as great spirits, as good as he could be in," SHR Director of Competition Zipadelli said. "He was a little down, felt like he let a lot of people down, the world, his fans.

"I know all the support he’s gotten from the fans and racers here has helped him a lot. We talked about that and it’s cool the outreach this area has given him."

NASCAR teams cast for new ways to lure sponsors
NASCAR superstar Dale Earnhardt Jr. can't drive nails, but he brings in more sponsor money than the entire IndyCar paddock combined
In recent days, a number of team executives in NASCAR have talked to me about the state of sponsorships for a package of stories appearing in our Aug. 9 print edition. One constant theme: how to convince corporate America to keep spending tens of millions of dollars in a sport beset by declining attendance and smaller TV audiences of late.

A new $8.2 billion TV deal signed by NASCAR bolsters the sport’s case with corporate America, NASCAR President Mike Helton and others said this week. Even so, 60 percent to 75 percent of NASCAR team revenue comes from sponsors, an imbalance that has long concerned executives.

Decision to stop developing 2013 car 'difficult' - Rosberg
Rosberg
(GMM)  More wins in 2013, or the 2014 title?  Nico Rosberg is in two minds about how Mercedes should tackle the second half of this season.

The German has won two races in the ever-improving Mercedes so far this year, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton won the most recent grand prix, in Hungary.

But with the sweeping rules changes for 2014 looming, and some teams already turning their full focus to the new cars, Rosberg is unsure how Mercedes should proceed.

The noose REALLY tightens on IndyCar's neck (Mid-Ohio TV Rating 2nd Update) UPDATE #2 Correction, while the rating was still a 0.1, 100,000 were tuned in for the pre-race show, it went up to 195,000 during the race and then down to 121,000 for the post-race show. The IndyCar 36 show had a 0.0 rating with 30,000 tuned in. IndyCar qualifying on Saturday drew a 0.1 rating with 138,000 tuned in.

08/09/13 Just when you thought it could not get worse, it did.  The final TV rating for the Mid-Ohio IndyCar race on the NBC Sports Network was a 0.1 with only 100,000 viewers tuned in, perhaps the lowest rating ever in the history of the series.  That is lower than even the worse infomercial.  Either IndyCar is going to kill that contract and do a deal for all their races on ABC and ESPN, sell the series to NASCAR, or hang a slow painful death.

08/09/13 The final TV rating for last Sunday's IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio on NBC Sports Network was so low it didn't break the top-50 for the day (that is day, not week).  The lowest rating we have from last Sunday was a 0.3 for 'Diners, Drive- ins and Dives' on the Food Network, so it was south of that, perhaps too low to even measure.  If we get the exact number we'll post it, but rest assured it won't be pretty as the noose continues to tighten around IndyCar's neck. Everyone can see it but them.

Dane Cameron, Team Sahlen Score First Career DP Poles At Road America
Team Sahlen called an audible at the end of Friday morning’s final practice at Road America, only 40 minutes before the start of qualifying for the VISITFLORIDA.com Sports Car 250. After Dane Cameron had the fastest lap in the session, the decision was made to let him qualify the car for a change – he usually follows co-driver Wayne Nonnamaker in the driver rotation – and go for the pole. Cameron stepped up and did just that, capturing the TOTAL Pole Award with a track record lap of 2 minutes, 0.028 seconds (121.412 mph) in the No. 42 Team Sahlen BMW/Riley. Video: Alonso drives the LaFerrari
Before heading for Budapest and the Hungarian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso had the opportunity to assess for himself the very latest phase of development of the quickest car ever produced in Maranello for everyday road use, not just exclusively on track; the LaFerrari. Today, we present a video made at the time: judging from his efforts, Fernando enjoyed every one of the 963 horsepower on offer from the combination of the V12 engine (800) and the electric motor (163) which powers the first hybrid car to come through the gates on Via Abetone Inferiore. Along with his team-mate Felipe Massa, the Spaniard was involved right from the start in the project and even on this occasion he contributed valuable insights to the team of engineers and test drivers involved in bringing to life and developing this extraordinary car.

Lucas Luhr is the only American Le Mans Series driver to have won championships in three categories, but would enthusiastically switch to the IZOD IndyCar Series should a full-time opportunity present itself in 2014.

There's no question about it," said Luhr, who will get his initial IZOD IndyCar Series seat time during a manufacturer/team test Aug. 13 at Sonoma Raceway. "Even if you do a full season in Indy car racing you have opportunities to do the long races in sports car racing. If that was the case, it would be a dream come true, even in my old age."

Tony Stewart breaks leg, will miss NASCAR Sprint Cup Watkins Glen race UPDATE Greg Zipadelli again updated the media Friday morning at Watkins Glen. Some notes:
  • The team has not settled on any replacement drivers, but hope to know who will drive at Michigan before this weekend is over
  • They would prefer to use as few drivers as possible, for the sake of consistency;
  • The team is looking at some Nationwide drivers, but would likely not use one until Bristol because Nationwide is at Mid-Ohio next weekend for a stand-alone event
  • Stewart's return is unknown. His release from hospital is "day by day" due to the possibility of an infection

2014 Championship hopes over?
NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Tony Stewart was transported to an Iowa hospital Monday night following an accident in a Sprint Car race. Stewart underwent surgery for a broken tibia and fibula in his right leg.

Stewart was driving a 360 sprint car, in an August 5th American Sprint Car Series race, at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa-Iowa. According to reports, Stewart was leading the race with five laps remaining when a lapped car spun in front of him. The contact collected Stewart's car, as well as two others. Stewart's car reportedly slid into the infield area where it flipped over on it cage.

Stewart's love of driving in sprint car races, in between his NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule, is well known. Unfortunately, his extracurricular activities has hit a rough patch lately. Monday night marks his third, spectacular, sprint car accident in a brief period of only 20 days.

Cable providers still negotiating with Fox over Fox Sports 1
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice sessions and the Camping World Truck Series race Aug. 17 from Michigan International Speedway will be among the live telecasts on the first day Fox Sports 1 goes on air in place of the Speed cable network. And that could be a problem. Among those still negotiating carriage fees with Fox Sports 1 are DirecTV, Dish and Time Warner Cable. Spokesmen for DirecTV and TWC said Thursday that discussions are ongoing and Dish also has not signed a deal, according to the SportsBusiness Daily.

Speed is in nearly 86 million homes, but millions of its current subscribers won't be able to see Fox Sports 1 unless a carriage deal is finalized. According to the SportsBusiness Journal, Speed costs about 23 cents each month per subscriber, and Fox is looking to increase that to 80 cents per month. It's not surprising that these negotiations go down to the wire, but it's enough to make NASCAR fans nervous as the channel they know as Speed will cease to exist when Fox Sports 1 is launched in its place in about a week. Boullier Says Formula One Costs Need To Come Down
Eric Boullier
Lotus Team Principal Eric Boullier said that "the costs of competing in Formula 1 must be brought down in order to safeguard the future of the current grid," according to Noble & Tremayne of Autosport.

Boullier believes that 80% of teams are in favor of negotiating ways to reduce expenditure, "but that a select few teams are preventing a consensus and creating an effective impasse." That means smaller teams -- including Lotus -- "face a financial deficit that they cannot plug indefinitely."

Boullier said, "The problem is that some teams -- like Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes -- can still afford the old way and can spend a lot on the car; we can't. To keep teams competitive, we need to keep a minimum budget with our resources, but this limit is above the revenue stream so we need our shareholders to bridge the gap." AUTOSPORT

How Australian race car driver James Davison arrived at his first IndyCar Series event last weekend is a showcase in perseverance.

Davison moved to the U.S. in 2005 as an 18-year-old Melbourne native chasing a dream. Things were proceeding well until after he finished second to JR Hildebrand in the Firestone Indy Lights Series in 2009. That’s when his career stalled.

Davison was a Vision Racing driver, but that was the year team owner Tony George was stripped of his IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway management positions. George disbanded Vision after that season.

When the going gets tough, Ford bails
Has there ever been a racing series where Ford stands to fight when they are not winning? The biggest news to come out of NHRA last week was Ford Racing officials confirming they will no longer support race teams on the professional level of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series after 2014. That means John Force Racing, Tasca Racing and Tim Wilkerson Racing will scramble for another manufacturer and/or more sponsorship for 2015 and beyond.

“We made a business decision as we evaluated the Pro/Nitro level in the sport this past year, reviewing our investment, the returns from activation, television ratings and overall product/technology relevancy,” Ford Racing director Jamie Allison said. “It is vital that we align our motorsports at Ford to closely match our global products, technologies and customer outreach, especially in this ever-changing automotive world.”

IndyCar Manufacturer standings tied up

Ganassi team closing in on team-record win streak
Charlie Kimball's first IZOD IndyCar Series victory at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio was the fifth in a row for Chip Ganassi Racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and fourth in a row this season.

The current streak has been accomplished on a 2.5-mile superspeedway (Pocono Raceway), temporary street course (Toronto, doubleheader) and a 2.258-mile, 13-turn road course (Mid-Ohio) by Scott Dixon and Kimball. Next up is Sonoma Raceway, where both Dixon (2007) and Dario Franchitti (2009) have won.

"When you're consistently running close to the top five you'll get podiums," Kimball said. "When you're (on the podium) every now and again, then you're going to pick up a win. And we have sort of taken that next step, not just me as a driver, but us as a team. I think we came into the weekend ready to win, and when the situation arose, we took advantage of that."

Giving Ganassi winning engines keeps him happy with Honda
Four consecutive Honda wins has the engine manufacturer feeling much better about the IndyCar season and its relationship with longtime partner Chip Ganassi.

The team owner was highly critical of Honda before the first qualifying session of the season, questioning the manufacturer's commitment to winning after Chevrolet entered IndyCar last season.

"I don't know if they want to win bad enough," Ganassi said at the March season-opening race at St. Petersburg. "They talk about everything at Honda but winning. They said for years and years and years they want competition. Now they've got competition, and they are not talking about winning. I feel like they want to sit around and hold hands and sing Kumbaya. I want to win."

Bryan Herta Autosport is hoping to relaunch its Indy Lights team on a full-time basis next year, joining fellow IndyCar outfits Andretti Autosport and Schmidt in running a feeder squad. BHA ran a car for Zimbabwean Axcil Jeffries at Mid-Ohio last weekend, and team owner Bryan Herta told AUTOSPORT that the recent takeover of the series by Dan Andersen's Andersen Promotions, which already operates USF2000 and Pro Mazda, mean that the environment is right to increase his commitment to the series.

"We're very excited again about Indy Lights," Herta said. "Dan Andersen has a plan in place, and is communicating that plan to us. We think he is making good decisions for the future of the series."

Q and A: Max Papis and Greg Zipadelli

Tony Stewart and Greg Zipadelli
Stewart-Haas Racing announced Tuesday that Max Papis will take over its No. 14 Chevrolet for this weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen, following Tony Stewart's leg-breaking crash in a sprint car race earlier this week. Wednesday, he and Greg Zipadelli, Competition Director for Stewart-Haas Racing, met the media to discuss his debut with the team.

Q: Greg, walk us through how you selected Max to drive this weekend.

GREG ZIPADELLI: Max and I have worked together in the past when I was at JGR with Joey (Logano). He helped us and went to Road Atlanta test with us and helped, and then Steve Addington and the 14 car wanted to do a Road Atlanta test about two weeks ago, and we reached out to Max, and he was able to do it. Tony had some commitments and was going to come down the second day.

NASCAR President Helton Discusses Fox, NBC Deals
Mike Helton
NASCAR President Mike Helton yesterday said that the sport’s new, $8.2B rights agreements with Fox and NBC offer it a chance to benefit from increased marketing and exposure. Fox this month will convert Speed into Fox Sports 1, and in the process will eliminate several NASCAR-specific shows. However, Helton, who was speaking at a Charlotte Business Journal luncheon called "Motorsports 2.0," said NASCAR stands to gain more than it loses as a result of the change.

He said, "That’s a good opportunity for us to ride the coattails, if you will, of a very major worldwide entertainment group that’s going to invest a lot of money starting a new brand so to speak. We think that’s going to be an upside for the entire industry."

Baltimore Grand Prix Yields To Navy Football Game (Date to change)
Will a non-Labor Day weekend race see crowds dwindle and the race die?
Next year's Izod IndyCar Series Grand Prix of Baltimore will be held "in August rather than Labor Day weekend" to avoid conflict with the Aug. 30 Ohio State-Navy football game at M&T Bank Stadium, according to Gary Haber of the BALTIMORE BUSINESS JOURNAL.

The Grand Prix of Baltimore has been held on Labor Day weekend since joining the IndyCar schedule in '11, but race GM Tim Mayer said that event officials are "considering two" weekends earlier in the month. While Mayer did not specify which weekends, he said that organizers are "in discussions with the Ravens and the Orioles about coming up with a weekend."
