IndyCar Lets Exclusive Negotiating Window With ABC/ESPN, NBC Pass
Mark Miles
Mark Miles knows NBC cannot take the whole season because NBC has the 2nd half of the NASCAR season meaning IndyCar will get pummeled like it is now. A full season on ABC is the best bet. There is no other motorsports on ABC and they could give IndyCar the attention and promotion it needs. That needs to be in writing in the contract.

The exclusive negotiating window that IndyCar’s media rights partners had has passed, series CEO Mark Miles said. That means the series is now free to talk to all parties both in the traditional and digital media world. IndyCar’s media rights deals with ABC/ESPN and NBC Sports expire after ’18, and the series had been engaged in recent months in exclusive talks with those parties. The exclusive window passed within the past few weeks, Miles said, and he added that such a scenario was expected from the get-go. Miles said IndyCar has made clear that it wants to explore the option of having one TV partner air the entire schedule.

There has been speculation that NBC appears to be more of a favorite to land the rights given that it has been increasingly touting itself as the home of motorsports, but execs note ABC/ESPN has broadcast the Indianapolis 500 for decades, which it may not be keen on giving up, and that ESPN’s new OTT package revealed this week could also give ESPN added incentive to land some or all of IndyCar’s rights. IndyCar is consulting with Bevilacqua Helfant Ventures over the media rights talks. Adam Stern/SBD

It hit the market in January for $7.9 million and was reduced to $7.25 million.

Sorah Daiha of Douglas Elliman represented the buyer, who owns other properties in Miami and was looking to purchase a unit in the Continuum. It sold for nearly $2,400 per square foot.

Reader feedback on recent Editorials (Update)
UPDATE Another reader writes, Dear AR1.com, After reading the article from the Economist on your rumors page on how the move to electric motors is going to destroy the auto and oil industries, it under scores the article you wrote that IndyCar had better wean itself off the OEM money trough because it's sure to dry up.  I like 99% of fans hope IndyCar stops trying to be relevant to the passenger car business and switch to screaming internal combustion engine. Those other series can switch to sewing machine sounding race cars, that will be their ultimate undoing. I want an IndyCar engine to scream like hell. Don Jones

The UK will require electric car chargers at all major gas stations
Gas Stations should start building out EV charging options now or risk being put out of business
Gas Stations should start building out EV charging options now or risk being put out of business
Electric cars are expected to reach cost parity with gas-powered vehicles as soon as 2018 – and governments around the world are introducing new legislation and incentives to keep up with increasing demand. The UK just announced a new law that requires all major petrol (gas) stations and motorway services to install electric car chargers.

If the oil companies were not still in denial that electric cars will eventually put them out of business, they would all start changing out some of their pumps to very high voltage electric charging stations and build small eateries on the property so people could buy food while waiting 30-min for their car to charge. The chargers made available should be Level 3 (car owners use 240-V Level 2 at home but on the road they need shorter charge times):

Hopefully vintage cars will quell fan boredom at Pocono
There is so little activity during the Pocono weekend fans show up only to be bored stiff. Hopefully the midget racing added this year and the stepped up vintage car activity will help
There is so little activity during the Pocono weekend fans show up only to be bored out of their minds and never return. Hopefully the midget racing added this year and the stepped up vintage car activity will help
LONG POND -- In one week, Pocono Raceway will welcome the nation and some of the world’s best open wheel racers when the Verizon IndyCar Series gets set to run the ABC Supply 500.

Long before NASCAR ruled at the Tricky Triangle, it was IndyCar that shined between 1971-89. The Series returned in 2013 and it’s been a perfect match since as the track was originally built for Indy cars and so much of the history of Pocono is centered on the open-wheelers.

Much of that heyday of the track and open-wheel racing in general will be a major part to the weekend as the “Vintage Celebration at Pocono Raceway” will bring history alive with an amazing display of restored Indy cars presented by Classic Racing Times (CRT).

Harvick says Dale Jr's inability to win "Stunted The Growth Of NASCAR" (Update)
Earnhardt Jr. rode daddy's coattails to become the most popular driver in NASCAR
Earnhardt Jr. rode daddy's coattails to become the most popular and highest paid driver in NASCAR despite not winning much

UPDATE Dale Earnhardt Jr. responded after he heard Kevin Harvick's comments that Junior's popularity "stunted" NASCAR.

Harvick was on his weekly show on SiriusXM's NASCAR channel when he said it was confusing to him that Earnhardt has been the sport's most popular driver, even though he has never won a championship.

"For me, I believe that Dale Jr. has had a big part in kind of stunting the growth of NASCAR because he's got these legions of fans and this huge outreach of being able to reach different places that none of us have the possibility to reach, but he's won nine races in 10 years at Hendrick Motorsports and hasn't been able to reach outside of that," Harvick said.

Another oval track bites the dust

Irwindale Speedway - fans today are turning off to oval racing - they find it mind numbing, dizzying and boring.
If things go to plan, Irwindale Speedway won’t be around long enough to see its 20th year in operation. Like too many other tracks in California, the speedway will become the state’s newest 700,000-square-foot mall after it closes on Jan. 31, 2018. Employees at Irwindale weren’t expecting it to happen so soon.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that a development company bought the track in 2013, two years after the speedway’s operator declared bankruptcy. The track’s website still calls it a “brand-new, state-of-the-art, motorsports [and] entertainment event facility,” and the Tribune reports that the developer said it would allow racing to continue there until construction began on newer and more state-of-the-art mall.

NASCAR's latest ride-buyer learned how to race on a computer
William Byron wins Xfinity race at Daytona
William Byron won this year's Xfinity race at Daytona
A few weeks after winning one of NASCAR’s biggest races, the Brickyard 400, 37-year-old Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Kasey Kahne got booted from one of the series’s best teams a year early. His teenage replacement in 2018 is ride-buyer William Byron, who’s only been in a real race car for four years--total.

That’s because Byron spent his early years--which weren’t long ago--racing behind a computer screen. Byron was born in NASCAR central, Charlotte, North Carolina, but never got in a race car himself when he was a child. He’d been a fan of racing since that age, watching on television and not quite understanding what was going on.
