Swindell undergoes surgery
Kevin Swindell underwent successful surgery Monday in a Des Moines, Iowa hospital to address fractures in his back while doctors continue to run tests and monitor the spinal cord injury he suffered last Thursday night at Knoxville Raceway during a sprint car heat race.

The 26-year-old native of Tennessee crashed hard after getting airborne in a tangle on the front straightaway during the preliminaries for the Knoxville Nationals. The impact reportedly drove the rear end into Swindell's back.

Abt smashes lap record, leads Formula E testing
Daniel Abt
DONINGTON PARK, UK (August 17 2015): Daniel Abt set a new Formula E lap record as testing resumed at Donington Park. The Abt Schaeffler driver used the full 200kw qualifying mode to record a lap of 1:30.250, comfortably quicker than Sebastien Buemi's previous best of 1:31.050s, set on the final day of last week's test.

"When Buemi said that a 1:29s was possible last week that really motivated me," he said. "It was a positive day. There was no stopping on track and that's the main thing. That meant I could just drive and performance-wise we were really good."

Nicolas Prost was second fastest for Renault e.dams, but he wasn't happy with the handling of his car on a windy day at Donington that once again drew a strong crowd.

Reasons Fontana dropped from IndyCar schedule
Auto Club Speedway on Friday announced that the Verizon IndyCar Series "would not make a return visit in 2016, ending four years of changing race dates that resulted in entertaining racing in front of sparse crowds," according to David Zink of the Riverside PRESS-ENTERPRISE. ACS President Dave Allen: "We’ve been trying to work hard to come up with a date and business proposition that makes sense for us and our fans." Track officials had "requested a return to hosting the season finale after the MAVTV 500 was moved to the middle of June this year and saw a low fan turnout."

Sabates says no deal with Kaufman yet
When Rob Kauffman announced at the beginning of August he had purchased an interest in Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, many in the NASCAR community wondered what it meant for the future. Kauffman is also a co-owner in Michael Waltrip Racing, but it was made clear the two organizations would operate separately throughout the rest of the year. A source close to the situation indicated this weekend at Michigan International Speedway the deal between Kauffman and the Ganassi organization is far from done, something Felix Sabates confirmed to FOXSports.com Sunday morning.

High-drag package disappoints at Michigan
Kenseth leads
Kenseth leads
NASCAR's high-drag aerodynamic package got its second race test Sunday in the Pure Michigan 400, and post-race reactions from drivers ranged from guarded approval to muffled disappointment. Matt Kenseth won the race in dominant fashion, leading 146 of the 200 laps. He was rarely challenged at the front. Most significant passing in the top 10 was done on the first few laps after a restart.

The high-drag package was used for the first time at Indianapolis last month and had little impact on improving passing opportunities. The most definitive post-race answers Sunday came from Team Penske drivers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski, both of whom avoided criticizing the package but said a lot in saying not very much. Asked what he thought of the package results, Logano said, "What did you think?"

Pocono Raceway to charge $20 for re-entry at IndyCar race
Fans attending the Pocono IndyCar race will be charged $20 to re-enter.
Dear AR1:

I live in Pennsylvania and regularly attend events at Pocono Raceway. I was at both the NASCAR races earlier this summer and encountered a new track policy, which does not allow re-entry for fans once they have entered the track. Only if fans pay a $20 fee can they re-enter the infield or grandstand area.

I spoke with Pocono 2 different times and their response was the policy is in place for the safety of the fans. They claimed they wanted to deter people from bringing guns and alcohol into the track, yet they don't seem to have adequate measures in place to deter fans from doing this the first time they enter. When I pressed them further, they simply said, "this is our policy."

Paul Fix victorious in Next Dimension 100 at Mid-Ohio
It was Paul Fix and the No. 4 StopFlex.com/TheCarCoach.com Chevrolet Corvette that emerged victorious in a tightly contested and chaotic Next Dimension 100, presented by FirstEnergy at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Round 7 of the 2015 Trans Am Championship.

In a race that seemed to throw everything possible at the competitors --  heat, heavy traffic, multiple contacts and full course yellows -- Fix managed to endure everything thrown at him, opting for a patient and calculated route to the podium, avoiding much of the drama and contact ahead of him.

“I knew it was going to be a very contact heavy race simply from watching the TA2 race yesterday,” said Fix.  “And I knew that we had six cars that were very competitive, with very close times, and I knew I just had to keep my nose clean—and that it would come to me.  And it sure did.  There were a few things that happened in front of me that I had no control over, and the car just got better and better as the race went on.  I think I turned one of my fastest laps at the end of the race.  I had a great car and great circumstances.  I love Mid-Ohio, I’ve been here since the 80s; I couldn’t be happier.

Nelson Piquet Jr.
Nelson Piquet, Jr. started from pole in the final of today's Red Bull Global Rallycross Washington D.C. Presented by Volkswagen and led flag-to-flag to capture his first GRC win. Bryan Herta Rallysport's Patrik Sandell and series-championship leader Ken Block rounded out the podium.

Chip Ganassi Racing's Steve Arpin made it a Ford sweep of the top-four positions. Tanner Foust came home fifth in the #34 Rock Star Volkswagen.

Piquet's win was not only the first Rallycross win for the Formula E champion, also marked a breakthrough SH Rallycross. The team owned by James "Sulli" Sullivan joined the series in 2014, and had scored numerous podiums but today celebrated the first win. Afternoon update from GRC DC
Patrick Sandell won semifinal B earlier today at DC Global Rallycross
It's about 2:20 p.m. here at RFK Stadium. The Red Bull Global Rallycross Supercars just wrapped up their two semifinal races with Patrik Sandell and Nelson Piquet Jr. taking the checkered flags. The Supercar Last Chance Qualifier was supposed to start at 2:10 but some track repairs have delayed matters here in the Nation's Capital. GRC Lites will have their LCQ after the Supercars.

As many of you know, my typical beat is the Verizon IndyCar Series. Over the past three days, I've been compiling a list of observations from the event here. I'm not sure how exactly I will share them, but suffice to say the vibe here is a little different than IndyCar, NASCAR or other more traditional forms of racing. While there are many examples of this, one such illustration is on my way over to the media center a few minutes ago, I found myself dodging a group of skateboarders. I can 100% say that has never been a problem at IndyCar races.

Lorenzo destroys lap record to take pole
Jorge Lorenzo
Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo obliterated the lap record at the Automotodrom Brno to take an incredible pole position at the bwin Grand Prix Ceske Republiky. The two-time MotoGP World Champion secured his second pole of the season with Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez and championship leader Valentino Rossi completing the front row.

Unlike on Friday when track temperatures reached over 50˚C, conditions were almost ideal for Q2 at the iconic Brno track. A track temperature of 42˚C and a light breeze meant grip levels were at their optimum, and the thousands of fans at the 5.2km Autodromo Brno were treated to one of the most exciting qualifying sessions of the year. As always, the outcome came down to the final few seconds of the session when riders popped in a fresh softer option rear tire and headed out on their last flying laps.

Bankrupt races: More evidence Indy Car needs to be sold
IndyCar put on the greatest race in the history of motorsports in Fontana in June, but only 4,000 showed up to see it.  Fontana is now on the long list of failed IndyCar races
Welcome to IndyCar inconsistency.

Actually, it's welcome back. This isn't a new phenomenon.

With Friday's confirmation that Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., will not host an IndyCar race in 2016, IndyCar reaffirmed its position as America's most consistent schedule revamper.

Already, the St. Petersburg, Fla., race has been moved up two weeks (to March 13), and the Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wis., will be added (that race will be June 26).

A new lawsuit that claims Andretti Autosport--one of the IndyCar Series’ biggest teams--is on the brink of insolvency has many questioning the viability of the open-wheel series itself.

“IndyCar teams in general are at the weakest level I’ve ever seen them,” said former driver and current motorsports analyst Derek Daly. “I would estimate that three-fourths of the IndyCar teams are financially unstable. It’s the worst situation I’ve seen in American open-wheel racing in decades.”

Team Penske gets unique tribute at Woodward Dream Cruise
Thousands of spectators lined the east and west sides of Woodward Avenue on a late Thursday afternoon - smart phones at attention for snapping photos - as pace cars representing Team Penske's record 16 Indianapolis 500 victories formed a uniform line.

Afternoon Update from Global Rallycross

It's about 2:30 p.m. here at RFK Stadium. The GRC Supercars have about 18 minutes remaining in their final practice before qualifying later today.

Andretti, of course fields Volkswagen Beetles for Tanner Foust and Scott Speed in Red Bull Global Rallycross. I asked Andretti about a host of topics pertaining to his various racing endeavors. However, for now, I will simply share a few of the details from our conversation about Formula E.

--With Simona de Silvestro signed to run one of Andretti's Formula E cars, I asked if Matthew Brabham was a candidate for the second seat. Brabham, who won the 2013 Pro Mazda Series championship driving for Andretti, and tested an IndyCar for the team yesterday at Sonoma. ran two round in Formula E this past season. Andretti said very simply, "he's on the short list."

Bryan Clauson/Bryd Racing To Team Up for 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500
The activity for the Month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway may not be here until another nine months, but we already know of another team that will attempt to qualify for next year’s 100th Running of the Indianapolis 500. Byrd Racing will field a team for the second consecutive year in the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” as they will have Bryan Clauson in their entry once again for a second try.

Clauson, will be attempting to make his third career Indy 500 (second with the team) as he started 33rd and finished 31st in this past May's race after crashing out of the event near the midway point of the 200 Lap race. But, with the partnership with Jonathan Bryd's, Clauson went up to Kokomo after the 500 to run his own version of the "double" as the Noblesville native ran in the USAC race that night as he finished second in a photo finish effort.

Lorenzo on top after Day 1 at Brno
Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo ended Friday’s practice on top of the timesheets after an eventful day at the bwin Grand Prix Ceske republiky that saw a number of top riders crash. The Automotodrom Brno was basked in sunshine all day, with track temperatures increasing by almost 20˚C to reach a scorching 50˚C by FP2. This meant that Lorenzo’s 1’56.499 from FP1 was good enough to top the combined timesheets, despite being almost a second behind Cal Crutchlow’s pole record from 2013 (1’55.527).

Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez topped FP2 to finish just 0.014s off Lorenzo’s pace from the morning and end the day second on the overall timesheets. The reigning MotoGP World Champion crashed during both sessions, as he was amongst a number of riders to suffer from a lack of grip as the mercury rose.

DesignLine issued Hendrick three payments of $100,000 each in 2011 and 2012 after the company's chairman borrowed $800,000 from Hendrick in 2010.

Buster Glosson, a retired Air Force lieutenant general, borrowed $800,000 from Hendrick in February 2010. The suit states DesignLine "received no benefit" from the borrowed money. The remaining $500,000 owed was amended to a promissory note in 2012, according to the suit.

Lorenzo quickest out of the blocks at Brno
Jorge Lorenzo took advantage of near perfect conditions at the bwin Grand Prix Ceske republiky to top the first Free Practice session. With the sun shining, and track temperatures rising to 38 degrees C Lorenzo managed to set a 1'56.499 around the 5.4km Automotodrom Brno. This was still some way of Cal Crutchlow’s pole record (1'55.527) from 2013, but was good enough to beat Marquez into second by 0.151s. The reigning MotoGP champion actually crashed after running wide at turn 13 as he tried to avoid hitting the barriers, and was forced to push his bike back down pit lane before re-joining the session.

Red Bull-Mercedes engine deal 'attractive' - Wolff
Wolff said he (Mercedes) would never supply Red Bull with engines.....until Ferrari said they would
(GMM)  Toto Wolff has admitted supplying Red Bull with engines could be "an attractive option" for Mercedes.

It is a significant change of tune for the German outfit, having earlier ruled out working with its arch enemy and saying Mercedes is at "full capacity" in terms of being able to supply customer engines to other teams.

But if the currently Mercedes-powered Lotus is bought by Renault, there may be a vacancy.

Wolff admits, however, that Red Bull's 2016 contract with Renault is a potential hurdle.

"There is an agreement in place," he told Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport, "and we do not want to interfere in legal matters between the parties.

But in the Russian media, it has been claimed that only teammate Daniel Ricciardo is guaranteed his place for 2016, as Kvyat has not yet had his deal formalized.
