Did Andretti lose in lawsuit settlement?
Michael Andretti
Did Andretti win or lose in a legal battle against itself?

That remains the unanswered question Wednesday as a settlement was reached in the odd case.

The essence of the resolution is that former Andretti Sports Marketing executives John Lopes and Starke Taylor received control of the Indianapolis-based company from Michael Andretti, who formerly owned 60 percent.

Andretti remains the sole owner of the race team, Andretti Autosport.

F1 trio moves on after Raikkonen news
(GMM)  A trio of drivers swallowed hard this week when Ferrari announced it is keeping Kimi Raikkonen for 2016.

They had hoped the Maranello team might swap the 35-year-old Finn for a younger model, hoping either to replace him or benefit from the domino effect of a major 'silly season' shift.

Lotus' Romain Grosjean admits he spoke to Ferrari.

"The paddock is small so you always talk," said the Frenchman.  "They're not too far away!"

Ryan Blaney wins truck race at Bristol
A spin with four laps to go in Wednesday night’s UNOH 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway proved to be the saving grace for Brad Keselowski Racing’s Ryan Blaney, who grabbed the lead on a green-white-checkered restart to win his first race of the 2015 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season.

Blaney recovered from an early race penalty for jumping a restart to find himself closing on leader Matt Crafton with five laps remaining. When Ty Dillon spun on Lap 196, it triggered the final caution of the night and the opportunity for Blaney to steal Crafton’s thunder. On the final restart, Crafton’s truck sputtered, failing to come up to speed, allowing Blaney to take off and seal his fourth career NCWTS victory.

McLaren drivers to use two new engines each at Spa
New engines for Alonso and Button
(GMM)  It will be a long and tiring Belgian grand prix weekend for the McLaren-Honda mechanics.

It was already known that, as Honda has traded in some of its upgrade 'tokens', both Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button will have to take grid penalties in order to use the new power unit at Spa-Francorchamps.

But now it emerges that each driver will actually use not one but two new engines each this weekend in Belgium -- one on Friday, and then an entirely new one each on Saturday.

NASCAR's new TV contract is delivering a mixed bag to the sport
This year marks a new TV contract for NASCAR. As Fox and NBC have teamed this year to air the Sprint Cup Series, the ratings for the sport have set records for their cable partners, Fox Sports 1 and NBCSN, but there have been drawbacks. According to Sports Media Watch, all 12 Sprint Cup races on cable this year have either been the lowest-rated of all-time for the race or been the lowest-rated in several years.

Last Sunday, the Michigan 400 on NBCSN drew a viewership of 4.3 million which was off from last year’s 5.2 million on ESPN and that was the smallest audience dating back to 2000. However, it was the second most-watched event in the history of NBCSN which is below last month’s Brickyard 400 which averaged 4.7 million viewers.

NBC Sports Network will put the spotlight on IndyCar's rising Americans at Pocono
Graham Rahal
Graham Rahal
Leigh Diffey may be Australian, but he understands why IndyCar Racing's popularity in America needs an infusion of young American driving talent, as it's getting at the moment from Graham Rahal.

"There's a resurgence of young American drivers, which is very intoxicating," said Diffey, who will be the lap-by-lap announcer for the NBC Sports Network during Sunday's ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway, a race that marks the third consecutive summer that open-wheel racing will be on display at Long Pond.

"When you add legendary names to it like Rahal and Andretti and fresh new faces and stars like [Josef] Newgarden and Sage Karam, it's terrific. There are so many positives. It's difficult to put your finger on just one."

Tony Stewart iffy about fifth surgery on right leg
Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart
A planned fifth operation on Tony Stewart's surgically repaired right leg may not happen after all. Stewart, who severely fractured his lower right leg in a sprint car accident in August 2013, has already had four surgeries, the most recent coming last December. A proposed fifth operation in the offseason would allow doctors to remove his stabilizing titanium rod hardware, but Stewart said he'll find out the status of the surgery in a couple of months.

"We actually don't know yet. There's potential that we may not have to have the operation, after all," Stewart said Tuesday at the announcement of Danica Patrick's new contract and sponsorship deal at Stewart-Haas Racing.

SHR working on additional sponsorship for Patrick

Danica Patrick
Stewart-Haas Racing executive vice president Brett Frood said Tuesday the team is working to fill the eight-race gap on Danica Patrick's #10 car next season with the same companies that have shared space on the hood with GoDaddy the past two seasons. Nature's Bakery was announced as Patrick's new primary sponsor in a multiyear deal starting in 2016.

"We're working through the final solutions on that, and hopefully we'll have some upcoming announcements," Frood said. "Those current partners, it's worked well, so we hope to continue that." GoDaddy, which announced in May that it wouldn't be renewing its primary sponsorship after this season, funded all of Patrick's races during her 2013 rookie season in Sprint Cup but had sold off a handful the past two years to Aspen Dental and TaxAct.

Why I won't go to Fontana (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 Another reader writes, Dear AR1.com, I just read the comment on the web site about an anonymous fan’s decision not to return to Fontana based on Greg Moore’s accident and death.  I too was at the track that day.  Along with the 1973 Indy 500, it was probably the saddest race I’ve ever attended.  A slight correction is needed to the inference in the article that Greg Moore’s status was not communicated to the crowd.  During the race, the large, main flags in the center of the pit area were lowered to half-staff.  It was a clear, poignant and powerful confirmation of the outcome that all feared.  I well remember my emotional reaction once I saw the flags being lowered and my immediate loss of interest in the outcome of that pivotal race, and continued emotions in and around the sullen paddock after the race.  In short, it was brutal.

NASCAR confiscates splitters from Penske cars (Update) UPDATE
Logano and Keselowski
Team Penske drivers #2-Brad Keselowski and #22-Joey Logano will not be penalized for the splitters NASCAR took from the cars before the Sprint Cup Series race Sunday at Michigan.

NASCAR officials felt the splitters were so close to being non-compliant that they had the Penske teams replace the splitter in order to lessen the likelihood of the splitters being out of compliance following the race. They also impounded the splitters to take a closer look at them this week, and NASCAR determined there were no issues. A splitter affects the amount of front downforce for the car. ESPN

Di Grassi lowers track record
Lucas di Grassi was fast man today at Donington Park
Lucas di Grassi became the first driver to record a time in the 1:29s on day four of pre-season testing at Donington Park.

The Abt Schaeffler driver used the 200kw qualifying mode to post a lap of 1:29.920s to break the new lap record his team-mate Daniel Abt set yesterday. The Brazilian was well clear of his rivals, who were headed by Renault e.dams' driver Sebastien Buemi.

"I have to say that going for the time is not as important as working on the reliability of the car," said di Grassi. "Of course working on the performance is important, but we know that performance here doesn't necessarily translate to what we will see at the other tracks. I think the lap time shows promise and it's good to know that our package is running well at 200kw."

Mercedes F1: Spa Quotes
Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton

It's been good to take a break from racing and spend some time relaxing, training and recharging the batteries. But, of course, there's always that flame in the back of your mind that just wants to get back out there and get on it - especially after a race like Hungary. Spa is a great track to kick off the second part of the season too. It's one of the really great, old-school circuits with so much history. It's mostly medium to high speed corners, so you're pretty much pedal to the metal the whole way round which is a lot of fun. It's always special to come out on top at a classic race like this so I remember winning here well. I love this track and I'll be gunning for that top spot again.

Commentary on Mark Miles
A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, When reading Mark Miles account of the low attendance at Auto Club Speedway in the Sports Business Daily, I didn't know if I should be amused, bemused or confused. In part he stated as to the attendance at Fontana, "There seems to be some sort of inverse correlation between ovals and crowds."

Having been involved with Forsythe Racing in the 90s & 00s the continuous press statements from Tony George and the purported ever present hammer to place the final nail in the CART/Champ Car coffin, NASCAR took advantage of the war by improving the entertainment value of oval racing in America.
