Chevrolet announces Z06 pricing
The Ferrari-beating, do-everything 2015 Chevy Corvette Z06 will start at $79,990 including destination, when it goes on sale early next year. That price undercuts nearly all competitors, including the Dodge Viper at $102,485.

The convertible version will start at $84,990, also not including destination.

The track-terrorizing Z06 will arrive with 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque from a supercharged 6.2-liter V8.

The new LT4 engine gets direct injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing, which makes it “surprisingly efficient,” according to Chevy.

Friday quotes from Spa
Toro Rosso
Daniil Kvyat, P1 - 1:53.594, 12th; P2 - 1:50.725, 7th
"I really enjoyed driving this track today and I'm quite happy with the car and how we managed to get through our program. We improved the car balance between the two sessions and I have to say that I feel confident for tomorrow, where I hope we will continue on this strong trend and improve even further."

Jean-Eric Vergne, P1 - 1:54.189, 16th; P2 - 1:51.383, 11th
"This morning we had some Power Unit related issues, which compromised our program a bit but nevertheless our performance didn't look too bad. In the afternoon, while trying different things, we probably didn't go in the right direction but we have a clear picture now on what we have to do for tomorrow. On the positive side, we seem competitive on the long runs, which is definitely an encouraging aspect for the rest of the weekend. Overall I'm happy, as we have a good car and we know what steps to take next."

Stoffel Vandoorne claims maiden GP2 pole at home
McLaren test driver Stoffel Vandoorne has snatched his first GP2 pole position on home soil in today’s qualifying session at Spa-Francorchamps. The Belgian ace denied Series leader Jolyon Palmer from the top spot at the checkered flag. Mitch Evans took third spot.

Already fast in this morning’s practice session, Johnny Cecotto quickly topped the standings, dipping under 1m58s, but Palmer was able to find a clear lap to break the 1m57s barrier. It was Series leader Jolyon Palmer who set the early pace with a laptime one tenth of a second quicker than title rival Felipe Nasr. Should Tony Stewart skip the rest of the NASCAR season?
Just when will Tony Stewart drive in a NASCAR race again?

Stewart will miss his third straight race since the Aug. 9 incident in which he struck and killed driver Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint-car race on a dirt track in upstate New York, and it is unclear when he will return. "Stewart’s plans for upcoming Sprint Cup races have yet to be determined," his Stewart-Haas team announced Wednesday. Stewart, 43, has been in seclusion since Ward’s death and Jeff Burton will again drive his No. 14 car Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Who will speak for Kevin Ward Jr. in biased Tony Stewart situation?
Will the racing world cover up the facts to protect Stewart?
Investigators could complete their inquiry into Kevin Ward Jr.’s death in the next week, although it could take longer.

It shouldn't surprise anyone if it takes longer. The investigation obviously is different than a normal car wreck that occurs in Ontario County (N.Y.), where investigators and prosecutors know how a car should react in certain situations.

This is an investigation involving a car they need to learn. They need to learn how the suspension works and how a sprint car reacts on a dirt track. They must consider the sightlines of a car that has a big wing above it, with dirt being kicked up in the turns and poor lighting at the track.

But in trying to understand these cars, investigators might have a hard time finding unbiased people to talk to.

Rossi will not race for Marussia at Spa (Update) UPDATE
The ride buyer's (Max Chilton) check came in so Alexander Rossi will not get his big break.  Welcome to F1 Alexander, which is stricken with the open-wheel racing cancer
(GMM)  Marussia has hit reverse after saying on Thursday Max Chilton would not be racing this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.

The backmarker team drafted in Californian Alexander Rossi, who is in Chilton's car for first practice for the Belgian grand prix on Friday.

But Briton Chilton, who claimed on Thursday he had relinquished the seat so Marussia could "sell" it to Rossi, will now be back in the car in the afternoon and beyond.

The team had said on Thursday that "contractual issues" had caused the seat swap.

Going for a spin with Mario Andretti at Sonoma Raceway
Mario Andretti in the 2-seater
Mario Andretti took a spin around Sonoma Raceway on Thursday and jacked the Indy car up to about 150 mph. He might have been able to go a tick faster, but he was lugging this writer.

The car shot around the 2.38-mile course, with its 12 turns, in about the time it takes some big-league batters to get prepared between pitches.

I had ridden around the twisting course before in a NASCAR vehicle, and that was fun. The tires were screeching like a chase scene from "Fast & Furious."

In this two-seat IndyCar there were no squeals - at least, none that I could hear over the engine noise. The big, bald Firestones supposedly cost $2,600 for a set of four, although I'm guessing the series gets a promotional discount. Each car will go through about six or seven sets over the next few days, culminating with Sunday's GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Power hopes to solidify title hopes at Sonoma
Will Power on his way to winning at Sonoma in 2013
Will Power arrives at Sonoma Raceway boasting three victories and three pole starts on the 2.385-mile road course in the past four years.

With that history and a 39-point championship advantage, the Team Penske driver should be brimming with confidence entering the 85-lap GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma on Aug. 24 - the penultimate race of the Verizon IndyCar Series season.

"Sonoma is just a very technical racetrack. It's a place where you have to really hit your marks and be precise. For whatever reason that fits my driving style perfectly," said Power, who was runner-up to then-teammate Ryan Briscoe in the 2012 race. "Plus, I've been fortunate to drive really good Verizon Chevrolets while at Team Penske. That always helps. After the test at Sonoma a couple of weeks ago, it seems like we'll have another fast one this weekend."

Ecclestone dashes hopes of Indian Grand Prix's return in 2015
Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone on Thursday asserted that the troubled Indian Grand Prix has run out of time for a 2015 return and its organizers must settle the contractual obligations for a possible comeback in 2016.

Ecclestone was hoping the race organizers, Jaypee Group, will sort out the five-year contract in time for a return next year but that has not happened yet, leaving the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) owners too little time to get the event back on track.

Usually, the FIA World Motor Sport Council ratifies the next season's calendar in September and the final one in December.

David Brabham To Honour ‘Black Jack’ At Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort
David Brabham
Banbury, Oxfordshire, UK – Thursday 21 August 2014: David Brabham will help commemorate the remarkable lifetime achievements of his legendary father, triple Formula 1 World Champion Sir Jack Brabham, at the Historic Grand Prix Zandvoort held 29-31 August.

Sir Jack, who sadly passed away in May aged 88, changed the face of global motor racing with pioneering thinking and engineering innovations that helped set the blueprint for the sport today. His first two World Championship titles, in 1959 and 1960, marked the end for front-engined Formula 1 cars. The third made him the only driver to win a World Championship in a car of his own manufacture in 1966, a feat unlikely to ever be repeated.

‘Black Jack’ won the Netherlands Grand Prix in 1960 and 1966, among his tally of 14 Grand Prix victories from 1955 to 1970. His second win on the circuit of Zandvoort followed shortly after his 40th birthday and will long be remembered as the time ‘Geriatric Jack’ hobbled on to the starting grid.

Chaves, Veach Separated by Seven Points Prior to Double-Header Season Finale
The 2014 season of Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires reaches its climax this weekend with a pair of races comprising the Indy Lights Grand Prix of Sonoma at Sonoma Raceway in Northern California. At stake is a $750,000 prize to the winner of the final step on the Mazda Road to Indy development ladder aimed at assisting graduation to the Verizon IndyCar Series in 2015.

Colombian-American Gabby Chaves, 21, currently holds the point for Belardi Auto Racing, although 19-year-old Zach Veach (Andretti Autosport), from Stockdale, Ohio, trails by only seven points, 466-459, following an impressive come-from-behind victory on Sunday at the famed Milwaukee Mile oval. This weekend will present an entirely different challenge for the title protagonists who will square off for a 40-minute "sprint" race on Saturday followed by a 60-minute "feature" event on Sunday, August 24, on the demanding 2.385-mile, 12-turn natural terrain road course.

Frenchman Latorre Poised to Clinch USF2000 Title at Sonoma Raceway
There's no doubt who has been the fastest driver in this year's Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda. Florian Latorre has started from the pole position in eight out of 10 races since joining Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing in time for Rounds 3 and 4 at Barber Motorsports Park, Ala., in April. The French teenager has converted only two of those poles into race wins but has added four second-place results and finished no lower than sixth to take a commanding 30-point lead in the championship over teammate Jake Eidson, 277-247, prior to this week's season finale double-header at the USF2000 Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Two more solid results for the 17-year-old from Libourne, France, should be enough to clinch the championship - a remarkable fourth straight for the Cape brothers, Dominic and Nicholas, who also guided Petri Suvanto, Matthew Brabham and Scott Hargrove to top honors from 2011 to 2013 and clinched the Team Championship at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
