Saturday Pocono Wrap
Josef Newgarden has everyone guessing
It's about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. Below, are a few notes I was unable to get to earlier today.

CFH Racing's Josef Newgarden spent a few minutes in the media bullpen area following his qualifying run. After taking a bit of a ribbing from Team Penske's Will Power, who posted a slightly quicker time, the Tennessee native was asked about a few topics; one, his potential participation in the Indy Lights finale in three weeks at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Newgarden admitted some "discussions" had been had. However, he did not seem to think it would be likely noting he didn't exactly feel comfortable participating in a race in which he might affect drivers running for a championship.

Tandy Puts Porsche on Pole for Oak Tree Grand Prix at VIR
Nick Tandy and co-driver Patrick Pilet proved at the last race that it really doesn’t matter where their No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR starts. After the engine sputtered during practice at Road America in Wisconsin, the team changed it before the race. The rules state that if you change the engine, you must start in the rear of the field.

So they did, and drove to the front, taking the GT Le Mans class victory, followed by their teammates, Joerg Bergmeister and Earl Bamber, in the No. 912 Porsche.

GP2: Vandoorne scorches to home victory
Stoffel Vandoorne delighted the local fans by claiming an emotional feature race win today at Spa Francorchamps, leading from pole position despite a red flag for the dramatic crash by Daniel de Jong throwing everyone’s strategies into the air, with Arthur Pic and Artem Markelov joining the McLaren tester on the podium as a result.

The Belgian did almost everything right, although he was a little slow off the line when the lights went out: Sergey Sirotkin stormed into the lead from P3 but ran too deep at La Source, handing the lead back to the local man, whose teammate Nobu Matsushita and returnee Oliver Rowland came together right behind him, with the Briton having to limp back to the pits with a shredded tire.

Record breaking 105-place grid penalty for McLaren
Fernando Alonso
McLaren have broken an unusual record this weekend, and one they'd rather forget, after being penalized 105 places on the grid, though it is effectively meaningless.

Both Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso have taken on two new engines this weekend, effectively exploiting a loophole in the regulations to give them additional penalty free engines at subsequent races.

However it comes at a cost, with Button taking on a 50-place drop, whilst Alonso drops 55-places. Of course neither will actually drop that far for two reasons; there are only 20 grid positions and a change in the rules mean the worst penalty they can endure is starting from the back.

Bowyer talks to the press, talks about his future
Clint Bowyer
Clint Bowyer
Michael Waltrip Racing driver #15-Clint Bowyer was made available to the media at Bristol Motor Speedway. It was announced earlier this week that MWR would cease full-time operations after the 2015 season and that Bowyer has been released from his contract and is a free agent for 2016. Bowyer's comments:

Opening Statement:
Bowyer: "First and foremost, it's a tough time for everybody involved and it's unfortunate. The truth is that we're eight months into a three-year commitment to one another. Had a great four years at this company, a great culture, great personnel, great people at MWR (Michael Waltrip Racing) and I really did enjoy the years that I spent there. That being said, Rob (Kauffman) provided us all of that and invested a lot into this sport.

Six-time Champ Whincup back on top in Sydney
The Champ is back. Jamie Whincup, the greatest driver in V8 Supercars’ history, has returned to hound Mark Winterbottom and potentially repeat one of the greatest comebacks in the sport.

Whincup last won a race in early March in Tasmania. It is the longest drought of his career since his run of six Championship titles began. It has been a source of constant frustration from someone who is rarely outside of the top five.

It may not have been his greatest victory but it was a telling one when he held out Fabian Coulthard and first race winner Chaz Mostert at the Sydney Motorsport Park SuperSprint. It followed a third place in the first of the sprint races.

Kauffman couldn't justify continued investment into MWR
The decision to close Michael Waltrip Racing boiled down to finances and results.

When the results weren't matching the financial investment Rob Kauffman was making on an annual basis, the co-owner could no longer justify pouring money into the organization.

That's the explanation Kauffman gave Friday for his decision this week to pull out of MWR. He rescued Michael Waltrip during MWR's rocky 2007 debut season, but will shift his money to Chip Ganassi Racing beginning next season.

The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, which sanctions major races such as the Daytona 500 around the country and internationally, is moving to a new office with Central Park views. NASCAR leased space at 590 Madison Ave., taking a portion of the 43-story tower’s 40th floor. The organization signed a 10-year lease for 14,077 square feet. Asking rent was $150 per square foot—about 50% more than NASCAR's current rent, but less than the rent it was facing at its current digs. A source said NASCAR will be paying $140 a square foot for its space.

Pocono hopeful for good-sized crowd at IndyCar race
2013 crowd of 25,000
Pocono Raceway wants the IndyCar series to return. IndyCar drivers want to continue racing at the 2.5-mile tri-oval. So, what's the problem with IndyCar possibly not racing at Pocono next year?

Brandon Igdalsky, Pocono's president and CEO, says that whatever happens will be a business decision. If enough fans show up Sunday for the ABC Supply 500, IndyCar is expected to return to Pocono next year. Igdalsky won't say what the "enough" figure is.

"We're optimistic we'll have a good crowd," Igdalsky said earlier this week. "It probably won't be first-year numbers, though."

The Belgian driver set a lap time of 1:56.278, one tenth better than rookie Oliver Rowland. Sergey Sirotkin completed the top three.

The pitlane opened in sunny and hot conditions with track temperatures rising to forty degrees. Nobuharu Matsushita was the first driver to feed onto the track with the rest of the pack hot on his tail and on Soft Pirelli tires. On his first push lap, Vandoorne wasted no time to put pressure on his rivals and was able to set the bar high lapping the track in a 1:56.518. Mitch Evans and then Rowland tried to challenge him but ended up four tenths behind the ART man.

Christina Nielsen Likes 'Being Up There with All the Boys'
As one of only two female drivers racing full-time in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship - the other is Prototype racer Katherine Legge - there’s something else to distinguish Christina Nielsen from the rest of the competitors in the GT Daytona class: With just three races to go, Nielsen sits atop the points for the season championship.

And you’d think the fact that she’s all by herself in the points lead would be a good thing, as the next 14 drivers in the points are all tied with at least one other competitor, the way Paul Miller Racing Audi teammates Christopher Haase and Dion von Moltke are tied for second, and Scuderia Corsa Ferrari teammates Bill Sweedler and Townsend Bell are tied for third.

GP2 Series leader Stoffel Vandoorne came back from the summer break on top form: the Belgian ace set the fastest lap time in today’s free practice session on home soil at Spa-Francorchamps. He was one tenth quicker than Mitch Evans. Alexander Rossi completed the top three.

The session opened in warm and sunny conditions as the twenty-five cars fed onto the track, and with the drivers eager to come to grips with the long Belgian circuit. Sergey Sirotkin was the man who set the early pace, but Rossi was able to improve on the Russian’s lap time to go top. Vandoorne however was on a mission: he became the first driver to dip under 1m58s to claim P1. Rossi was next, but his efforts were not enough to better the Belgian’s performance.
