Canopy manufacturer open to testing options for Dallara DW12
The canopy can take many shapes
The best-known manufacturer of open-wheel chassis canopies says they'd welcome the opportunity to work with the Verizon IndyCar Series and determine whether the devices would be a suitable option to enhance driver safety.

Indianapolis-based Aerodine Composites manufactures custom canopies used on 300mph NHRA Top Fuel dragsters, and with more than 25 years of involvement in Indy car racing, coming together to build and test prototypes for IndyCar's spec Dallara DW12 chassis is not out of the realm of possibilities.

"The technology is out there to do some simulations and some live testing," Aerodine president Craig McCarthy told RACER Monday morning. "We've seen the FIA testing video with canopies and even some NASCAR guys launching things out of an air cannon at wind screens, and I know IndyCar invests in seat testing and headrest testing, and maybe opening it up to try some things that are outside the box might be a worthwhile alternative."

The American outfit formed Andretti Technologies to develop its own motor and inverter for the ATEC-01, which uses a revised four-speed Hewland gearbox.

However, a troubled testing program - which ends today (Tuesday) - has prompted it to go back to the Spark SRT_01E that utilizes a McLaren electronics system and five-speed Hewland gearbox for the second season of the all-electric championship.

Stewart moves wrongful death lawsuit to federal court
The wrongful death lawsuit filed against Tony Stewart by the parents of Kevin Ward Jr. was assigned to U.S. District Judge David Hurd on Monday after the Sprint Cup driver asked Friday for the case to be adjudicated in federal court rather than New York state court.

There was no immediate response from Ward's legal team on whether it will challenge the federal court's jurisdiction and request to have it moved back into state court. The Ward family seeks unspecified damages related to their son's suffering, death and their own loss of economic support and services from their son. Stewart is scheduled to file his response to the lawsuit by Friday and an initial scheduling conference is set for Oct. 8. espn..com

Open-Wheel racing is in need of a major rethink (Update) UPDATE Article written on the topic of closed cockpits by Mark Cipolloni four years ago on AR1.com.

08/24/15
The next IndyCar will take many design cues from the Red Bull concept car done by Adrian Newey and Kazunori Yamauchi

With the news of the death of IndyCar driver Justin Wilson, who succumbed to his injuries received from flying debris after Sage Karam's crash during a 500-mile IndyCar race at Pocono on Sunday, once again the sport is reeling. There are no words to describe the shock and sense of loss to Justin's family at this time, but we can only hope they can somehow find some comfort and solace in this darkest hour.

I wrote the rest of this column Sunday night - before I received the news of Justin's passing - but it's no secret that I believe that the open-wheel racing machines that we have followed for decades need a major rethink. Exposed drivers in cars that are going upwards of 220 mph is a racing car configuration whose time has surely passed.

"Justin was one of the best -- on track and off. He was lucky because he had a wonderful family with his beautiful bride Julia and two lovely daughters and he was excited about all the possibilities in life, not just in 2016 but beyond, for both his career and his family. Every year I spoke with Justin about joining our team, even as recently as Mid-Ohio. In addition to his ability to be one of the best race car drivers, he was the ultimate team player.

Max Chilton - Motor racing must push for closed cockpits
Max Chilton
Former Marussia driver Max Chilton says the motor racing community has to push for the introduction of closed cockpits in open wheel categories following the death of IndyCar driver Justin Wilson.

Chilton, who now races in the Indy Lights series beneath IndyCar, drove for Marussia in 2013 and 2014 and was the team-mate of Jules Bianchi when the Frenchman suffered a serious brain injury when he collided with a recovery vehicle at the Japanese Grand Prix last season. Bianchi died from his injuries in July.

FIA set to carry out closed cockpit tests
The FIA plans to hold new closed cockpit tests next month, Motorsport.com reports, with the issue having returned to the agenda in the wake of Justin Wilson's fatal IndyCar crash.

Wilson died as the result of serious head injuries he suffered when he was struck by flying debris at Sunday's IndyCar race at Pocono.

His accident has renewed the debate about introducing closed cockpits in top level single seaters, with work first having started seriously back in 2009 in the immediate aftermath of the crashes involving Felipe Massa and Henry Surtees.

NASCAR Drivers want stricter policing of restarts
UPDATE Despite a push from some competitors that restarts need to be better policed, NASCAR does not plan to change how it officiates those. Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer, addressed the topic Monday on "The Morning Drive.'' O'Donnell said officials want the responsibility for a good restart to remain on the drivers.

"We've told the drivers that we'd like to leave it in their hands,'' O'Donnell said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "The rule is clear. We've got a restart zone. We've got a bunch of technology and spotters we can use to look at and make calls. We would like to leave it and continue to leave it in the drivers' hands but that's something we'll continue to look at. We're confident in the calls we've made. The leader restarts the race. It's something we've always got to look at. It's a hot topic when you see things in one or two races in a row that becomes a theme. Hopefully, we get into Darlington and that settles down a bit and we get back to racing.'' More from NBC Sports

Does sparse crowd spell doom for the Pocono 500? (Update) UPDATE "We can't go three years losing money. It's a business and you just can't do that" -- Brandon Igdalsky Pocono Raceway president and CEO Brandon Igdalsky.

Quote interpretation: Either IndyCar significantly reduces its sanctioning fee for the Pocono 500, or the race will not be on the 2016 IndyCar schedule. Period.

Will a sparse crowd of maybe 15,000 be enough to save this race?
08/23/15 Thousands of IndyCar fans descended upon the Pocono Raceway Sunday for the ABC Supply 500.

However, Sunday might be the last time that happens.

IndyCar came back to Pocono Raceway in 2013 after a more than 20 year hiatus. This race is the last year under contract between the league and the track. Right now, it's unclear if this relationship will continue.

Open Wheel car Canopies will not hinder a driver's egress
I have heard all the arguments about the concern with a canopy on an open wheel car - especially how it might prevent a driver from getting out of the car should it be upside down. First let me say this - if a current open wheel IndyCar or F1 car is upside down the driver isn't getting out without the help of the safety crew. Period.

And the safety crew is always on the scene in a minute and usually within 15 seconds. On the truck would be a crow bar, that if needed, can pry that canopy off in seconds. And saws, which they already have, should they wish to cut it off.

So this idea that a driver is going to scramble out of a car after a severe accident unassisted is complete nonsense.

On the penultimate day of running before the cars are packed up and freighted to the Beijing ePrix, the DS Virgin driver became the first man not from Renault e.dams or ABT Schaeffler to record the fastest time at the conclusion of an official pre-season test.

Bird recorded a best time of 1m30.451s early on in the afternoon session and with the rain intensifying as the day wore on, there was nothing the Brit’s rivals could do to displace him.

Stewart loans plane to Justin Wilson family

Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart loaned his plane and pilots to Stefan Wilson, brother of injured IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson, so Wilson could get from Indianapolis to his brother's side at a Pennsylvania hospital Sunday night. Justin Wilson was hit in the helmet by the flying nosepiece of Sage Karam's car during the race Sunday at Pocono Raceway and was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown, PA.

Wilson suffered a severe head injury and is in a coma in critical condition, according to the IndyCar Series. It is not unusual for Stewart to lend his plane to people in the racing industry amid a health crisis. Most of those acts go unpublicized at Stewart's request. He did not publicize his loaning of the plane and pilots Sunday night, but several in the IndyCar community sent out tweets thanking him. ESPN.com

Alexander Rossi Wins in Spa
Alexander Rossi
Alexander Rossi
Alexander Rossi claimed his first victory, and fourth podium of the year, in an incredible final race in Spa-Francorchamps. Starting from third on the grid, the American Driver made a phenomenal start to take the lead, and maintained P1 throughout the intense race to bring home his first victory for the Racing Engineering team. Alexander now moves back up to second place in the Driver Championship rankings, closing the gap to current leader Stoffel Vandoorne as the 2015 race season heads towards to final few races of the year.

Friday’s practice session in Spa took place under unusually warm conditions at the iconic circuit, with air and track temperatures of 20° and 30° respectively for the forty five minute morning session. All the cars were running the Pirelli P Zero Orange hard compound tires, and the nature of the Spa circuit meant that a good aerodynamic balance between the high speed sections and the medium and high speed corners was crucial for a strong lap time. True to form, Alexander Rossi set the pace by going fastest on his first flying lap with a time of 1:58.091s and then improving to 1:57.731s on his fifth lap. After a strong morning’s work, he finished the session in P3 overall.

So angry was the Ferrari driver with his late-race Pirelli tire blowout that he forgot to deliver himself to the FIA's Jo Bauer to be weighed.

He was busier doubting Pirelli chief Paul Hembery's claim that it was not the tire’s fault for his potentially title chance-ending failure, but a simple matter of "wear".

GP2: American Alexander Rossi soars to sprint win
American Alexander Rossi gets first GP2 win of 2015, maintains 2nd in points
Alexander Rossi has claimed his first win of the year in this morning’s sprint race at the Spa Francorchamps circuit, dominating his rivals after taking the lead on the first lap and controlling the pace throughout to bring home a 1-2 for Racing Engineering with Jordan King ahead of Mitch Evans.

King made a good start from pole when the lights went out, but Rossi’s getaway was even better: the pair led Nathanael Berthon and Julian Leal into La Source, with Stoffel Vandoorne making a strong start and taking the outside line to get by Evans, Sergey Sirotkin and Artem Markelov as the field headed down towards Eau Rouge: Rossi was pushing hard and, when King was slightly unsettled on the curbs at Les Combes, the American grabbed the lead.

IndyCar return to Pocono could be short-lived, says track CEO
Running the IndyCar race 2 weeks after the NASCAR race means IndyCar only had a 2-week sales push. Ludicrous. Will they ever learn? Instead of the headlines being about the championship battle, once again IndyCar's headlines are about bad news for the series.
Pocono Raceway CEO Brandon Igdalsky said it's "50-50" that IndyCar will return to the track next year.

IndyCar returned to Pocono in 2013 after a 24-year absence for the first race of a three-year contract. With the deal over, Igdalsky hopes to know within two weeks if the financial numbers justify another season.

IndyCar ticket sales at Pocono have been soft the past two years. Igdalsky said sales for Sunday's race are not where they were in 2013. While the track does not disclose attendance figures, about 30,000 to 35,000 fans were estimated at the 2013 race.
