Chaves Captures Sunoco Rookie of the Year Title at Sonoma
Gabby Chaves
Gabby Chaves
After an emotionally challenging week for the Indycar community, it was time to conclude the 2015 season at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma. The double points weekend put both the overall driver's and Sunoco Rookie of the Year championships in play, the latter being the focus of the BHA team and driver Gabby Chaves.

Alarm.com joined the #98 as the primary sponsor for the event; a track that is difficult to pass and requires a nearly perfect balance to be competitive on. In the final practice leading up to qualifying, less than one second separated the top twenty cars ~proving once again how competitive the Verizon IndyCar Series is. Chaves and the BHA team qualified a disappointing 21st; however, found the necessary speed to be competitive in the morning warmup and posted the 7th best time.

Chevrolet Wins 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series Manufacturers Championship (Update)
UPDATE Post-Race Press Conference with Jim Campbell and Chris Berube

THE MODERATOR: We're joined on my far left by Jim Campbell, who is the U.S. Vice President of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports for Chevrolet and next to him is Chris Berube, the Chevrolet racing program manager. Gentlemen, we'll go through a few of these facts and figures first. Chevrolet actually clinched the championship even going into the race today, fourth consecutive manufacturer's championship for Chevrolet, swept it since you guys came back into IndyCar racing in 2012, 10 race victories this year, swept the podium six times this year, won every possible Verizon P1 Award for pole position in 2015, top two qualifiers in 15 of the 16 races this year, and this is the first time since there's been the manufacturer competition resumed in 2012 that a manufacturer has swept the manufacturer's championship, the driver's championship and won the Indianapolis 500. Some pretty incredible numbers.

IndyCar Championship Scenarios
AR1 has all your Astor Cup scenarios covered
Below, are some championship scenarios for today's 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series finale at Sonoma Raceway. To be clear we did not give every single scenario, rather a few broad ones that will help you follow along during the race.

Let's start with Josef Newgarden. Newgarden is 87 points behind Montoya and needs a minor miracle to win the championship. But to make things simple, to win the championship Newgarden must win the race and then have the following occur:

Morning update from Sonoma (Update) UPDATE With the warm up completed, I asked about pit stops for the race.  The drivers this weekend have constantly remarked that the alternative tire falls off very quickly.  And the black tires are also too soft and fall off sooner than at most races.  I asked what the teams will be concerned with during the race, tires or fuel and was told that most teams will try and use the fuel strategy and not worry as much about tire wear.  I heard that you lose 3 seconds a lap after the reds fall off.

Rockenfeller wins - Ekstrom claims back points' lead
Audi drivers Rockenfeller and Ekstrom celebrate their 1st and 3rd
There is no doubt that he can rightfully refer to himself as ‘Moscow expert'. Two years after his victory in the first-ever DTM race at Moscow Raceway, Mike Rockenfeller had reason to celebrate in Russia once again. In a turbulent race, the Audi driver steered clear of every incident on the track, made maximum use of his pole position and scored a dominant lights-to-flag victory.

"I had the car I need to win. In spite of the amount of success ballast, it was simply super-fast," a jubilant Rockenfeller said.

Cars with canopies look 'cool'
James Hinchcliffe doesn't remember what happened for a few hours on May 10 in Indianapolis. From the moment a piece of Justin Wilson's wing hit his helmet during the Indianapolis Grand Prix until he was leaving the hospital later that day, Hinchliffe has no recollection.

"There's nothing that I remember," he told USA TODAY Sports. "I don't recall anything until I was at the hospital getting discharged. The prevailing theory was I was knocked out briefly when it hit me and came to when I ran into Oriol Servia's car. The first thing I started talking about over the radio was wanting to get my helmet off, but I don't remember that."

Lawyer: Tony Stewart's response to lawsuit 'appalling'
Kevin Ward Jr.
NEW YORK (AP) — A lawyer for a racecar driver who was killed when he was run over by Tony Stewart's car says legal claims by the NASCAR star in response to a lawsuit are "appalling."

Attorney Mark Lanier said Saturday in an email that Kevin Ward Jr. was killed last year as he walked on a dirt track in upstate New York even though Stewart is one of the world's best drivers.

The lawyer noted five other cars drove around Ward during a yellow caution flag before Stewart "revved his engine and ran him over." He called Stewart's legal papers in response to the lawsuit "appalling."

Dale Jr. and Amy Reimann
Dale Jr. and Amy Reimann
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has said he and Amy Reimann plan to wed next summer after getting engaged June 17 in Germany. With NASCAR racing nearly every weekend, there will be few options for them to choose a summer wedding. Earnhardt will be in a friend's wedding this weekend - the final off weekend of the Sprint Cup season - and is looking forward to his wedding.

"I'm probably going to be doing it this time next year," Earnhardt said. "Once we get that damn schedule. I've been asking (NASCAR Vice Chairman Mike) Helton since New Hampshire what's going on." NASCAR's officials have suggested that the 2016 schedule should be released in early September. NBC Sports

Penske Shares Wall of Fame Honor with Wilson
Roger Penske gets Hall of Fame honor from track President Steve Page
Roger Penske is a firm believer in the strength of the team, and as owner of the most prolific organization in Indy car history, he should know. That's why, while being inducted to the Sonoma Raceway Wall of Fame today, Penske felt compelled to have a recently departed favorite member of the Verizon IndyCar Series team share the honor.

As the plaque bearing his name and likeness was unveiled in Victory Lane, Penske asked Steve Page, Sonoma Raceway's president and general manager, to have Justin Wilson's name inscribed on it, too, before the plaque is posted with those of other wall of fame members behind the track's main grandstand.

"I wouldn't let this day go by without having his name on that plaque with me," Penske said of the 37-year-old driver who died Aug. 24 from a head injury sustained the day before at Pocono Raceway, "because he's one of the great guys. We lose a great friend and a competitor, and we need to honor him also."

Saturday notes from Sonoma
Will Power en route to career pole #42
A few quick notes from Saturday in Sonoma:

--Will Power went out on black tires after Josef Newgarden set his fast time on reds, so Power was very quick on both reds and blacks.

--The pole position was the 42nd of Power's career, which is all the more impressive when you realize tomorrow's race will only be his 155th career start.

--Scott Dixon was not happy with his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Tony Kanaan after both were eliminated in second round qualifying. I did not get a chance to find out exactly what the bone of contention was.

Pascal Wehrlein strikes back in Moscow - Ekstrom loses points' lead
The start of Race 1 in Moscow
The start of Race 1 in Moscow Whittmann takes lead
It was a nerve-wrecking affair until the final seconds. The first race at Moscow Raceway showed in an impressive way what the DTM has in store: fierce battles between the manufacturers, entertaining duels, bitter retirements and a new leader in the drivers' standings. For Pascal Wehrlein, it was a picture-perfect race. After 24 laps, the Mercedes-Benz driver crossed the finish line as the winner and with this success, he claimed back the lead in the drivers' standings. "This was a perfect day. I am surprised myself how well the car worked throughout the distance. This really was a damn good race," the buoyant winner commented. After a fierce battle, pole sitter Marco Wittmann in his BMW M4 DTM had to make do with second place from his fellow BMW driver Bruno Spengler. The Canadian managed to move up into the top three to score a podium finish in the final seconds of the race and thus prevented Audi driver Jamie Green from doing so. It wasn't the only setback the brand from Ingolstadt had to take in during the race on Saturday.

Afternoon update from Sonoma
It is so hard to believe that that was the final practice session for the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series season.  Other than Sebastian Saavedra going off briefly, there were no on track incidents during the 45 minutes.

I will try to convey what it was like in pit lane this morning. Suffice to say, the mood is tense. Every driver in the championship fight had a pit announcer in their pit box. Juan Pablo Montoya's father is seen pacing in his son's pit. Graham Rahal's fiancée Courtney Force and Graham's Mom, Debbi Rahal, are keeping an eye on Graham's progress. Will Power has his brother from Australia, Damien, and his lovely wife Liz and her Mother waiting to see if Power can win his fourth pole at Sonoma Raceway.

Sensational Marquez obliterates record for pole
Marquez smashes record
Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez set the fastest ever lap by a motorcycle around the legendary Silverstone Circuit to take his 28th career MotoGP pole position. The reigning MotoGP World Champion went under his 2013 pole record (2'00.691) on his very first flying lap to lay down a marker to the rest of the field at the Octo British Grand Prix.

The Spaniard then went even quicker on his second run to set a 2'00.234 in near perfect conditions (Track temp. 33˚C) as all of the riders made use of their softer option tires. Marquez had earlier topped FP4 by almost a second, and carried his pace into Qualifying to finish 0.288s ahead of Lorenzo.

Newberry: IndyCar is clearly too risky; time to shut it down (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 A reader from the Netherlands responds to Paul Newberry regarding his article that IndyCar should be shutdown, Dear Mr. Newberry,  I just read your article suggesting IndyCar dead is, very interesting, to say the least ...if I did not know any better I would have thought NASCAR put you up to it.

Just to prove you wrong, I actually hope there will be a fatality in F1 any time soon. Don't get me wrong, I don't want anyone dead, but your story about IndyCar is not only absolutely distasteful, but also completely excessive and too exaggerated, I can't find any other words for it.

Saturday morning update from Sonoma
The weather has sure changed from yesterday here in the wine country.  Driving into the track, there was a mist on the windshield but it was only from the fog layer that is normal here in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Current temperature is 66 degrees and cloudy.  High should be only 82 today.  Rain is much needed in California since they have been in a drought for four years now.  In 2014, harvested acreage was 6.9 million acres, about 8 percent lower than the average over the past 15 years.

Friday update from Sonoma (Update 1) UPDATE
The Indy Cars are back at Sonoma Raceway
Below, are a few news and notes from yesterday afternoon at Sonoma Raceway.

You did not see the drivers practice for the duration of the three-and-a-half hour session, largely because they didn't want to use up their weekend allotment of tires. Each team will have 8 sets of blacks and 3 sets of alternate red tires for the weekend. They also have 5 sets of the new rain tires but as you know it’s been relatively dry in California for a while now. And we doubt there will be any need to use the rain tires this weekend.

Sebastien Bourdais had a flashy set of led lights on the #11 Team Hydroxycut - KVSH Racing Chevrolet during one of his stints.  They looked pretty impressive in the daylight and I hope we get to see them in the race Sunday.

Massive Justin Wilson Charity Auction
Big fund raising effort for Justin Wilson's kids and wife.  Who will be next? With no canopies on the IndyCars it can happen anytime, and the tears will flow again.
The volume of domestic and international support for the wife and children of the late Formula 1 and IndyCar driver Justin Wilson is growing at an incredible rate. In what could be the biggest fundraising effort to date, Devin Werig, the CEO of eBay, and IndyCar driver Graham Rahal, have united to create a massive auction of motor racing memorabilia that will go directly to the Wilson Children's Fund.

Rahal led an identical eBay auction in 2011 to benefit the wife and children of Dan Wheldon using premium motor racing memorabilia which raised $590,000. Rahal's auction for Wilson, who served as his teammate in 2008, has a goal of raising $1 million or more for the Briton's family. An international network of drivers, teams, and manufacturers from IndyCar to Formula 1 to the FIA World Endurance Championship has offered to donate driving gear, bodywork, and other high-value memorabilia.

Kevin Magnussen admits to approaches from other F1 teams
Is Magnussen's check big enough for another team?
Kevin Magnussen admits he has had offers from other teams on the grid about a drive for 2016, with the McLaren junior driver's future still uncertain.

Magnussen was dropped at the end of last year despite an impressive rookie campaign for McLaren, with the team opting to retain the services of Jenson Button alongside new signing Fernando Alonso. The experience of both former world champions has been key this year with new power supplier Honda struggling to be competitive.

While Alonso is locked into a three-year deal, Button is waiting to see whether McLaren takes up the 2016 option on his contract. As well as Magnussen, McLaren has GP2 champion Stoffel Vandoorne waiting in the wings and could theoretically promote either in Button's place.

Stewart responds to wrongful death suit
Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart claims he did not see Kevin Ward Jr. until just prior to his sprint car striking the 20-year-old driver and that Ward actually tried to make contact with Stewart's car in the accident that resulted in Ward's death. Stewart's local attorney, Brian Gwitt, filed the Stewart response Friday to the wrongful death lawsuit brought by Ward's parents. The response, filed in U.S. District Court in Utica, N.Y., states that Stewart didn't even know who it was on the track at the time, and that Ward was responsible for his own death because he not only walked out on to an active race track but also because he was under the influence of marijuana at the time. The three-time Sprint Cup champion has never talked publicly about what happened that night, other than to say it was "100 percent an accident."
