Aldo Costa: From Engineering Room to F1 Cockpit Can the most decorated Formula One engineer of all time, Italian Aldo Costa, turn his hand to turning the wheel of a car that he and his team designed? Comment
The first race-ready version of Formula 1's new ballistic-tested helmet concept that all drivers must use next season has been unveiled by Italian company Stilo.
The new design, which is the result of nearly a decade of research by the FIA since Felipe Massa's crash in qualifying for the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix, is aimed at helping take driver head protection to the next level.
The current zylon forehead protection area is replaced with a fully integrated extension of material - which results in the top edge of the helmet face opening moving down by 10mm.
LMP2 cars have been given an increase in minimum weight ahead of next weekend’s Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, in the first-ever Balance of Performance adjustment for the ACO global-spec prototypes.
It comes on the heels of three consecutive overall wins by LMP2 machinery in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and returning to the site of the platform’s maiden win last year.
Released on Thursday, the latest BoP table confirms that the Oreca 07 Gibson will run with 10 kg of additional weight and a three-liter reduction in fuel capacity.

Goodyear to Provide Rain Tires at Charlotte for Roval Race
Goodyear rain tires
Goodyear will have rain tires available at Charlotte Motor Speedway in case of rain at the track on the day of the Bank of America Roval 400 at the track in Concord, North Carolina, on Sept. 30.
“Having wet weather tires at teams’ disposal is a great thing for the drivers and the fans as well,” Charlotte Motor Speedway Executive Vice President Greg Walter said in a press release from the track. “The roval is a challenge unto itself, but giving teams the opportunity to use tires designed for a wet surface adds even more unpredictability to the race. Rain or shine, I can’t wait to see how it unfolds.”
Schmidt Peterson Motorsports has announced that the No. 6 Lucas Oil SPM Honda has been entered for the final two races of the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season. While Robert Wickens continues to recover from his injuries following an incident at Pocono Raceway on Aug. 19, Carlos Munoz will compete at Portland International Raceway and Sonoma Raceway for SPM.
“Robert and his family have been in my prayers and I continue to pray for his recovery,” Munoz said. "I’m very grateful that Schmidt Peterson Motorsports have entrusted me to compete in the Lucas Oil Honda for the last two races of the season. I am looking forward to pushing hard for a great result for the team and for Robert.”
Boles Confident Brickyard 400 Will See Attendance Increase
Doug Boles sold out the ideal date for an IndyCar finale at IMS to IndyCar's enemy, NASCAR
Indianapolis Motor Speedway has its "foot on the gas" as it prepares for NASCAR's Brickyard 400 on Sept. 9, and track President Doug Boles is "brimming with optimism that a major overhaul the Speedway is rolling out this year will increase race attendance" by 10-15%, according to a front-page piece by Anthony Schoettle of the INDIANAPOLIS BUSINESS JOURNAL.
Sources said that attendance in '17 was "roughly 70,000." If Boles’ projection is correct, this year’s attendance "should be about 80,000." While a "solid improvement, it’s less than a third of the 275,000 fans the first race drew" in '94 and it is "not even half" of the '09 attendance.
NBC Sports is riding co-pilot in IndyCar's sponsor search (Update)
IndyCar and NASCAR have this common theme in low TV ratings
UPDATE If NBC wants to 'really' help IndyCar find a sizable series title sponsor the best thing they can do is announce they are switching all the races that were going to be on NBCSN for the next 3 years, to network NBC TV. With 100% of races on network TV IndyCar will have no problem landing a big title sponsor.
Will it happen? Of course not, because NBC has no interest in seeing IndyCar succeed. If they did, then they would do as we suggest.
08/29/18 IndyCar is counting on NBC Sports to help it fire on all engines again as the racing series looks to overcome a TV ratings slump and replace a departed title sponsor.
Follow along with the crews of Andretti Autosport as they break down their pitstop positions in a new video series titled "Over The Wall".
The fourth episode takes us to the inside rear where Brad hums a very interesting song during each Verizon IndyCar Series pit stop. Tune in as the remaining two positions will be released each Wednesday leading up to the Verizon IndyCar Series season finale!

Their results were more than enough for Honda to clinch the Manufacturers’ title with two races remaining.
United Autosports Successfully Races Magnificently Restored Machines Of Yesteryear
1988 Audi 200 Trans-Am quattro
United Autosports has spent this month “practicing what it preaches” regarding a side of its business that is not widely known. The UK-based team has competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship, European Le Mans Series and IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship in recent years and will contest the 2018-19 Asian Le Mans Series. But another thriving element to the Anglo-American team that achieved a class podium* in only its second Le Mans 24 Hours and recently achieved its 20th ELMS podium from 26 race starts, is its ground-up restoration service that Richard Dean’s experienced staff can offer to Zak Brown and customers that can then be raced successfully again.
Scott Dixon leads the Verizon IndyCar Series championship with two races to go for the second time in his career. He also led the championship with two to go when he won the title in 2008. Dixon has led the championship lead since his win at Texas in June.
Scott Dixon leads Alexander Rossi by 26 points with Will Power (-68) and Josef Newgarden (-78) just behind. With 54 maximum points available at Portland, the points lead could change for the eighth time in 2018.
There are five drivers still mathematically eligible for the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series championship: Scott Dixon, Alexander Rossi, Will Power, Josef Newgarden and Ryan Hunter-Reay. Any driver who trails the points leader by 105 points or more following the race will be eliminated from contention.
Fernando Alonso says he had Red Bull offer! Fernando Alonso sits down with Sky F1's Simon Lazenby to discuss his shock decision to quit Formula 1, and reveals that he had offers of a seat at Red Bull Racing. Comment
Fernando Alonso flew over the top of Charles Leclerc’s Sauber on Sunday in a dramatic opening to the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, but neither onboard camera really showed the admirable job done by the halo device.
Previously unseen footage from onboard Brandon Hartley’s Toro Rosso shows the hit taken by the halo from Alonso’s right front tire as it smashed down with immense force into the cockpit area. Arguments in the lead up to the 2018 season had focused on the aesthetic polarity of the attachment, but now it has likely saved a life.
In 2019, Audi will continue to compete with electric power in motorsport. At the same time, the manufacturer will prolong its factory-backed commitment in the popular DTM touring car series.
In the 2017/2018 season, Audi was the first German automobile manufacturer on the Formula E grid. Having scored four victories and a total of eleven podiums after twelve races around the globe, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler claimed the teams’ championship. The commitment in the fully electric racing series that is currently experiencing a boom with the participation of other manufacturers and partners forms the electric pillar of the brand’s motorsport involvement.

On the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, the former late-night host takes us through the past and present of Tesla cars (the 2008 Roadster and 2018’s Model 3), before giving us a glimpse into the future with a test drive of the 2020 Tesla Roadster.
Unveiled back in November, Elon Musk promises that the upcoming Roadster is “the fastest production car ever made.” The car can reach 0-60 mph in just 1.9 seconds — faster than the average Formula 1 car — it can cover a quarter mile in just 8.8 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 250mph.
