Mercedes afraid it's not good enough for equal competition
Dieter Zetsche knows Mercedes not good enough to beat another team with its engine
Red Bull "may be cutting its ties with Renault too soon," with reports Mercedes has "shut down talks" to supply it with F1 engines in '16, according to FOX SPORTS.

Red Bull was reported to have "made a formal request to Renault to end their nine-season partnership at the end of this year." It has "repeatedly been speculated that the team had been on the hunt for a new engine supplier in the wake of two dismal seasons."

The bulk of the paddock chatter has revolved around a "Red Bull-Mercedes tie up, a move that would have put the winningest engine of F1's new era at the disposal of the winningest team of F1's previous era."

The Case for Closed Cockpits in F1 and IndyCar
Since the 50s, the open wheeled race car has gotten faster, safer, more efficient, and most of all, better. Engines have gone from the front to the middle, wings have gone from a novelty to the key to huge speed, engines sprouted turbos, lost them, and then sprouted them again, and cars have gained all manner of sidepods, roll hoops and airboxes. All facets of the cars have changed, improved. All facets, that is, but one.

Drivers are protected from all angles except for their exposed helmets, and with the passing of Justin Wilson, we can't ignore it any longer. Proposed solutions are all over the board, but here are a few that stick out:

Kyle Busch clinches Chase spot at Darlington
Kyle Busch
Kyle Busch
With his seventh-place finish in the Bojangles' Southern 500, Kyle Busch officially clinched a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

Busch, who drives for Joe Gibbs Racing, missed the first 11 races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Season after suffering gruesome injuries to his right leg and left foot in a head-on crash into a concrete way in the season-opening NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Daytona International Speedway in February.

In order to make the Chase, Busch had to win at least one race and conclude the Sprint Cup season in the top 30 in points. The victories came quickly -- Busch won at the Sonoma road course in June and then took three races in a row in July -- but locking himself in the top 30 was harder, given that he missed 11 races.

Formula 1 Forced To Reconsider Tire Policy As Drivers' Dissatisfaction Grows
Mercedes has made F1 a complete borefest. Technology dominates the sport. The driver is almost meaningless. Engineers win races, not drivers.
Drivers' dissatisfaction with F1 has "forced bosses to reconsider the sport's current philosophy," according to Andrew Benson of the BBC.

F1 has, for five years, been "following an approach" pioneered by CEO Bernie Ecclestone of "deliberately fragile tires that promote multiple pit stops."

But, following "consistent criticisms by leading drivers" of the tires provided by Pirelli, bosses "are to discuss whether F1 should head in a different direction."

Herta wins at Rockingham

Colton Herta took his third win of the season in the final MSA Formula Championship race of the weekend at Rockingham yesterday. The American racer led Lando Norris over the line in the closest finish so far of the 2015 season. Herta and Norris’ one-two finish was complimented by a fifth place for Petru Florescu, who had been well in the fight for third throughout the race. Norris leaves Rockingham with a lead of 17 points in the championship.

In a reverse of Saturday's race one, it was Herta's turn to start from pole on Sunday afternoon, with Norris starting from second, while Florescu started sixth. As the lights went out, Herta made a strong start, leading Norris into the hairpin, but a few corners later Daniel Ticktum was able to pass Norris for second and behind Norris was a fast starting Florescu in fourth.

Apparently a clear technical breach, with both performance and safety implications, many in the paddock had expected the British driver to be disqualified.

Markelov, Visoiu and King receive penalties
Any hope of Rossi winning the GP2 title is now gone after wanker Robert Visoiu speared him on Sunday
The race stewards have penalized 3 drivers following this morning’s sprint race in Monza for their involvement in collisions during the event.

Artem Markelov has been given a 5 second time penalty following his collision with Julian Leal: the stewards noted that he left the track at the second chicane and made contact with the Colombian when he rejoined. The added time means the Russian drops from 9th in the classification to 14th.

Robert Visoiu and Jordan King were both given 5 grid place penalties for their next race following collisions in which they were involved: the Romanian was judged to have not braked sufficiently when he collided with Alexander Rossi at the second chicane, putting both men out of the race, while King was judged to have missed his braking point at the first corner of the race when he collided with Norman Nato, causing the Frenchman to retire.

Fans take a stand against NASCAR's plea for Confederate flag removal
The Confederate Flag is flown proudly by NASCAR fans, a symbol of a time when the whites in the south used blacks as slaves
The Confederate Flag is flown proudly by NASCAR fans, a symbol of a time when the whites in the south used blacks as slaves. Shame on them.

NASCAR officials asked fans to refrain from flying the Confederate flag at races. Views from the infield at Darlington Raceway prove that many fans haven't taken that suggestion to heart.

Dennis Dease, a Conway native, could be seen around the track sporting Confederate Flag suspenders, shirt and hat. He said the flag is a part of the sport's history, and there's no way it will stop flying at events.

"I mean, this is the South. It's part of our heritage, and nothing they say can change that," Dease said. "You can fly it in your front yard, on your car, on your clothes, wherever you want to, and them trying to tell us we can't fly it will only make us fly it higher."

Arthur Pic (Campos Racing), Mitch Evans (RUSSIAN TIME), Stoffel Vandoorne (ART Grand Prix)

Pic made a good getaway from P2 when the lights went out, easily dispatching slow starting poleman Jordan King on the run down to the first chicane: the Englishman came together with Norman Nato in the corner, breaking his front wing as the Frenchman retired on the spot, causing Richie Stanaway to take avoiding action before leading Evans and McLaren tester Vandoorne to the Curva Grande, ahead of Sergio Canamasas, Rene Binder, Artem Markelov and Robert Visiou.

Alexander Rossi came to Monza this weekend to peg back Stoffel Vandoorne's lead in the drivers' championship, and this afternoon he did just that: the American trailed the McLaren test driver for lap after lap before blasting past on lap 23 en route to a storming victory in today's feature race from Vandoorne and Mitch Evans.

Poleman Pierre Gasly made a strong start when the lights went out to hold the lead of the race into Rettifilio, while fellow front row starter Vandoorne was slow off the line, handing Alex Lynn a line inside and through. Further back Rossi, who was P9 out of turn one, had the first lap of his life to cross the line in P5, putting him in prime position to watch Sergey Sirotkin relegate Vandoorne to P4 on the next lap before a safety car emerged for Meindert van Buuren's broken car after the Dutch rookie found the wall at Ascari.

Kurt Busch using digital dashboard at Darlington
Kurt Busch has a little bit of the new amid his car decked out with a retro paint scheme this weekend at Darlington Raceway. Busch is experimenting with the digital dashboard that NASCAR will require teams to have in 2016. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver and team, comfortably in the Chase for the Sprint Cup figured Darlington would be the best place to test the digital dash. Their car at Darlington is an older car that they're not planning to use in the Chase, so they won't have to worry about rewiring or reconverting the dashboard.

The dashboard weighs a pound, and the team has worked to try to get weight out of other parts of the dashboard to compensate for it, including an entirely new steering column, according to crew chief Tony Gibson. Teams are allowed to customize what information the dash provides and how, as well as the colors and size of the displays.
