The internal combustion engine is a dead man walking
Stick a fork in the internal combustion engine, it will soon be done.
Stick a fork in the internal combustion engine, it will soon be done.

The age of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) is over writes Tom Raftery of Forbes, and he's spot on. Electric cars are the future. The transition has just begun, but the move from ICE vehicles to Electric will happen sooner and more quickly than most people suspect.

What are the factors that lead me to say this with such confidence?

1 China says so!

China is now the world's largest car market (of the 86m cars sold in 2017, 30% (25.8m) were sold in China, compared to 20% (17.2m) in the US, and 18% (15.6m) in the EU).

Unsurprisingly, car manufacturers want to have access to this market. However, China has passed a law which requires any vehicle maker to obtain a new energy vehicle score of at least 10% by 2019, which rises to 12% by 2020, and on up to 20% of sales by 2025.

COTA to focus on IndyCar before considering NASCAR race
Bobby Epstein - IndyCar is the focus now
Bobby Epstein - IndyCar is the focus now
Circuit of the Americas founder and Chairman Bobby Epstein believes having two IndyCar events in the state of Texas will act as a boost to both races, and the series as a whole.

IndyCar will visit COTA for the first time next April while it will make another trip to the state for the June 8 race at the Texas Motor Speedway.

With one race being a road course and one being a superspeedway, Epstein feels the two events have significant differences to avoid an overlap.

Final weekend TV Ratings
Portland crowd up, TV rating down
Portland crowd up, TV rating down

Final Labor Day weekend TV ratings for NASCAR, F1 and IndyCar.

The common theme: Every series will be up huge if they do not broadcast their races on NBCSN - it's too obscure of a channel

Notes:
NASCAR Xfinity up big on NBC vs NBCSN (Of course)
NASCAR Cup down big on NBCSN vs NBC (Of course)
F1 up big on ESPN2 vs. NBCSN (Of course)
IndyCar down big on NBCSN (But of course)

It's the TV Ratings Stupid
NASCAR and IndyCar screwed themselves with so many races on obscure cable TV channels
NASCAR and IndyCar screwed themselves with so many races on obscure cable TV channels
NASCAR killed itself with the most recent new TV deal, and so did IndyCar by no going to a 100% network TV deal.

Not that there wouldn’t still be huge problems without it, ratings would still be down even on broadcast/over the air, and NASCAR attendance would still be way down.

But we really think this was the last straw for many companies, or the one that justifies re-thinking their sponsorship in NASCAR.

Putting so many races on obscure cable channels, in a sport that relies on viewers to attract sponsorship, was the ultimate in short-term thinking - both for NASCAR and IndyCar.

Boles hopes Brickyard 400 will see an uptick, but will it?

You can shoot a cannon in those grandstands and not hit anyone

IMS President Doug Boles has been faced with plummeting Brickyard 400 since 2008. This year with the date change to September, and hopefully cooler temperatures, he hopes to change that.

“We’re really optimistic,” he told IndyStar. “I feel pretty confident in saying we’ll have more people in the venue here on Sunday than we did last year. The question is how much more. But frankly, this is the first time since 2008 – with the exception of the year Jeff Gordon retired (2016) -- that we’ve been able to turn the attendance around.”

Toyota's Recalling 200,000 Prius cars To Prevent Electrical Fires
Ever get stuck behind a Prius owner going slow to make mileage? Maybe best to keep them all off the road
Ever get stuck behind a Prius owner going slow to make mileage? Maybe best to keep them all off the road
The rise of the electrified vehicle has brought with it a whole slew of new safety issues. Where conventional automobiles present the risk of collision, fire, carbon monoxide poisoning, and other dangers, hybrids and electric vehicles add the potential for electrocution into the mix.

Few know that better than Toyota, which makes more hybrids than most any other manufacturer in the business. And it’s recalling nearly 200,000 Prii (as it has officially pluralized the Prius name since holding a contest in 2011) for just that issue.
