Wickens sets sail. His injuries were MUCH worse than originally thought
UPDATE Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver Robert Wickens underwent surgeries this week at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis to repair fractures to both of his legs and hands from injuries sustained in a crash during the INDYCAR event at Pocono Raceway on Aug. 19. The surgeries were completed without complication.
Wickens is expected to be transferred to a rehabilitation center in the coming days to begin the recovery process. The severity of the spinal cord injury he sustained in the incident remains indeterminate and under evaluation. Physicians stress it could take weeks or months for the full effects of the injury to be known.

After a two month hiatus, Alfonso Celis Jr. returned to the No. 32 Chevrolet / Juncos Racing car at Portland International Raceway. This weekend marked the Mexican rookie's second start in the Verizon IndyCar Series.
The weekend kicked off with two test sessions followed by three practice sessions. Qualifying proved to be one of the closest all season long among the highly competitive field. Celis Jr. (Mexico City, Mexico) qualified 23rd on the 1.97 mile, 12-Turn road course.
A familiar and respected face around the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires paddock, Jonny Baker will join Andersen Promotions in a newly created position as Series Development Director for all three levels of the world renowned ladder system. Baker will step into his new post immediately, following the conclusion of the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda season finales at Portland International Raceway this past weekend.

"For me (Darlington) will be the last scheduled Xfinity race that we put on the schedule," Harvick said.
Team Penske announced Thursday that BODYARMOR Sports Drink has agreed to a multi-year extension that extends and expands its partnership with the No. 12 team and driver Ryan Blaney through the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season and beyond.
The 2018 season marked the first race team partnership for BODYARMOR, which has enjoyed a personal relationship with Blaney since 2017.

Robert Wickens has secured the Sunoco rookie of the year honors for the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series with one race remaining in the championship. The Canadian is now unable to be caught by his rivals in the rookie of the year standings, despite having missed the last few races due to injuries sustained in his heavy crash at Pocono Raceway.
Upon hearing the news that Wickens had secured the 2018 Sunoco rookie of the year honor, his team, Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, released a statement congratulating their driver for his outstanding results this year and to further affirm that they would be ready to have him back in one of their cars as soon as he was fit to return.

The Chicago, IL-based squad today confirmed plans to enter at least one Dallara-Mazda IL-15, in addition to its existing commitments in both the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda.

IMS President Doug Boles has been faced with plummeting Brickyard 400 since 2008. This year with the date change to September, and hopefully cooler temperatures, he hopes to change that.
“We’re really optimistic,” he told IndyStar. “I feel pretty confident in saying we’ll have more people in the venue here on Sunday than we did last year. The question is how much more. But frankly, this is the first time since 2008 – with the exception of the year Jeff Gordon retired (2016) -- that we’ve been able to turn the attendance around.”

Lucas Oil School, Cooper Tires Combine for Team USA Scholarship Shootout

Six finalists for this year’s coveted Team USA Scholarships will convene this week at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., for a two-day shootout. Ultimately, two American youngsters will be invited to represent their nation at the Formula Ford Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy events later this fall in England. They will also earn an invitation to the Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout, the winner of which in December will secure a $200,000 prize to enter the 2019 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda.
