Karting

The 2015 World Karting Championship has started at Le Mans
The long-awaited moment has finally arrived. Under beautiful sunshine at the Le Mans Karting International circuit of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest the biggest CIK-FIA competition of the year has started with timed qualifying. The road is still long and uncertain before Sunday afternoon’s three major titles, but an initial hierarchy has now emerged among the 175 drivers present. The pole positions have been taken by the Italian Paolo De Conto in KZ, the Frenchman Nicolas Gonzales in KZ2 and the Belgian Ugo De Wilde in Academy.

The drivers had officially started running on Thursday morning on the Le Mans Karting International circuit for many sessions of free practice, necessary for rigorous development of equipment. Although the kart is a simply designed machine, the set-up needs to be meticulous, as well as a high standard of chassis and engine, all essential to compete properly in such an event.

Sean Rayhall
It took a successful crowdfunding effort for 20-year-old American Sean Rayhall to be able to compete in this weekend's Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires doubleheader finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Now the Georgia native looks to continue the success he has generated in a part-time ride this season with 8Star Motorsports.

He was third fastest in the opening day of testing Sept. 10 at Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif.

Record-breaking Lorenzo heads Friday’s practice
For the fourth race in a row it was Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo and Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez who filled the top two places on the combined timesheets on Friday. This time it was Lorenzo who finished on top of the pile as the Spaniard took advantage of the new track surface and glorious conditions (Track temperatures reached 38˚C) to set the fastest ever lap by a motorcycle around the 4.2km Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli.

Lorenzo set a 1'32.871 in FP2 whilst utilizing a medium front and medium rear tire on a day that saw nearly all riders improve in the warmer conditions of the afternoon. The Majorcan - who is currently second in the championship standings - broke Marquez’s 2013 Pole record in the process (1’32.915). FP2 also saw Lorenzo debut ‘winglets’ on his Yamaha M1 and they seemed to have a positive effect as he immediately went quicker.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Drops MotoGP Event - making room for 2nd IndyCar race?
Indianapolis Motor Speedway today confirmed that the track "will not stage" the MotoGP Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix in '16. IMS President Doug Boles said the track's fan base has been shown to be "four-wheel rather than two-wheel."

Boles said that attendance at last month's event was "the highest in four years" with 67,648 on Sunday and a three-day total of 145,558, but the track's projection for '16 "could not guarantee financial success given the expectation of an increased sanctioning fee." Indy Star

Following the removal of the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca from the MotoGP schedule in 2014, the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix became the only summer MotoGP event in North America for the last two seasons. This caused both financial and logistical challenges that no longer made the event viable for the foreseeable future. Ultimately, removing the Indianapolis race became key to Dorna's efforts to expand both the number of events it hosts and the geographic diversity of its schedule.

This makes room for another 4-wheel race at the track. That race should be the Indy 400 IndyCar season finale.  Of course that makes too much sense so it will never happen. The family has tried everything except swamp buggy racing. All have failed (including the NASCAR Sprint Cup race which is failing) but they refuse to add the race that makes all the sense in the world - a season finale for the IndyCars at the home of the IndyCar series -- the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Q&A with Ricciardo and Kvyat ahead of Singapore and Japan
Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel, it's traditional for a driver to start the Singapore preview by saying it's a bit hot and quite humid...

Well it is hot! And very humid! I think it's all those tall buildings downtown – the heat doesn't have anywhere to go. It's the most physical challenge of the year. It's the only race of the season where you crack open your visor to let in some cool air and instantly wish you hadn't because it's hotter outside. By the warm-up lap your chilled drinks bottle is the temperature of a freshly-poured cup of tea. It's a tough place to race – but I love the challenge. I think most of the drivers do.

You're usually a happy camper in Singapore – do you like the buzz?

Hull says Road America test very important
Mike Hull
The last time Chip Ganassi Racing took an Indy car to Road America was 13 years ago, and most teams have some experience at Road America but with a different car.

"What experience does for you is it gives you a good reflection on how to go forward," Mike Hull, Ganassi's managing director, said Thursday from Indianapolis to the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal. "What experience does for you is it allows you to think more about the race and if you have drivers who have experience at a certain racetrack or have raced in series -- in this case the IndyCar Series -- for a while, no matter what the spec of the car is, they really do think about how to prepare themselves for the race.

Servia Interested in a Return to IndyCar in 2016
Oriol Servia

"I do have a new fire in my belly," Servia told RACER magazine. "I don't know how it is going to translate as we look to the future, but I know that something special happened at Sonoma and it has me thinking about what could be possible."

Servia was recently named as team manager for Dragon Racing's UK-based Formula E teams and, while he isn't planning to leave that position behind, the chance to drive a front-running IndyCar has generated interest in an expanded IndyCar campaign.

Axalta Shows Commitment To Hendrick Motorsports By Opening Center On Campus
Hendrick Motorsports sponsor Axalta on Tuesday "did something that might be unprecedented in NASCAR history: It broke ground on the 45,000-square-foot Axalta Customer Experience Center" that will be located on HMS' "expansive" campus in Concord, N.C., according to Tom Jensen of FOXSPORTS.com.

Clearly, Axalta "is not a sponsor that's going away anytime soon." Still, the thought of a sponsor "spending millions of dollars to build its own state-of-the-art center on a race team's land is a bold move, signifying that the relationship will last well beyond the next couple of years."

Haas poised to diss American drivers (3rd Update) UPDATE #3
Reader hopes Gene Haas fails miserably for dissing American drivers
A reader writes, Dear AutoRacing1, So NASCAR bigwig Gene Haas decides to go F1 racing in "The American F1 team".  Except, as AutoRacing1 has been so adept in pointing out, this apparently excludes American drivers.  It was obvious that Haas was a bit of an idiot from the start when he commented that Danica Patrick would be given consideration as a driver.  Really??? Clearly there was no less qualified choice this side of vintage Formula Fords.

Then he hires this German guy, Steiner, who states that they need drivers with "Experience in F1".  So now, it seems to boil down to Esteban Gutierrez, who as I recall wasn't very good, and couldn't get a better seat than test driver (and he probably brought money for that).  His "experience" seems to be with Carlos Slim's bank account.  So, as a driver choice, FAIL for Haas.

2015 IndyCar TV viewership below 2012 numbers
IndyCar saw its 2nd season of TV growth, after the numbers hit the skids in 2013. The 2015 numbers were up 13 percent over 2014, but given the small TV audience we're talking about the percentages don't mean much. For example if you had 1 viewer per race in 2014 and then got 2 viewers per race in 2015 you can brag that your numbers were up 100% and you would not be lying. So the fact that 137,000 more viewers watched per race in 2015 the increase is not significant, but at least it is in the right direction. The numbers pale in comparison to NASCAR, whereas in the CART days IndyCar was higher than NASCAR. So this series has a steep hill to climb to return to its glory days.
Season No. of Races Avg. # of viewers per race (000s)
2012 15 1,222
2013 19 953
2014 17 1,025
2015 16 1,162

FOX NASCAR Analysts Discuss Storylines Headed Into Richmond
With one race remaining before the field is set for the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, FOX NASCAR analysts Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds share their thoughts on drivers’ last-ditch efforts to qualify for the Chase and the complexion of the 10-race championship.

Which of the “bubble” drivers will get into the Chase and which will miss the cut?

McReynolds:  “The 16 drivers currently in the Chase will be the ones locked in when we leave Richmond.  I don’t see it changing.  We keep waiting on Kasey Kahne, Aric Almirola, Kyle Larson, Greg Biffle or Tony Stewart to win a race, and while that can happen, it won’t.   I don’t see any of them coming even remotely close to winning a race in time for the Chase.”

Steiner confident about Haas F1 project viability
Gene Haas hired Gunther Steiner to lead his F1 team. He has been a loser in F1 before (canned by Jaguar and Red Bull) and he hates American drivers, using the excuse "we must have drivers with F1 experience" for not hiring American Alexander Rossi.  Jos Verstappen proved that stupid theory wrong by coming into F1 at just 17 years old with zero experience and out driving the so-called experienced drivers.
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner is adamant Gene Haas' foray into F1 will prove more successful and perennial than recent attempts.

The US squad is set to enter the series next year and will thus become the first new outfit since HRT, Caterham and Virgin joined the top echelon in 2010. Of the three most recent newcomers, only one is still competing, with Manor, formerly known as Virgin and Marussia, scraping by at the back of the grid.

Despite more established teams like Lotus also struggling with financial difficulties, Steiner refutes the idea according to which any new F1 venture is doomed to failure.

"We came up with a different plan that has a strong focus on collaboration with somebody established [Ferrari], and therefore we don't start from zero," he told the official Formula One website.

"We don't want to do everything ourselves, so we came up with 'our' plan. Of course now we have to prove that it works, but we are definitely not afraid of entering a challenging and difficult environment.

As part of the rollout of its ’15 NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup marketing campaign, series manufacturer Ford this afternoon unveiled a movie-style ad with driver Joey Logano that promotes the project. The spot, which was produced in house and shot in early August in Wilkesboro, N.C., is a new effort from Ford, which last year only had a sweepstakes component to its campaign. The spot shows NBC Sports reporter Nate Ryan querying Logano during a press conference on what he would do if he was not a driver, and then shows Logano hallucinate to another world where he’s a Mustang-driving superhero who saves the Sprint Cup – and Miss Sprint Cup – from being stolen. Dick Guldstrand dies at 87
When Dick Guldstrand went to France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race in 1967, getting there was half the fun..

Somebody on the team forgot to airlift the trailer, so Guldstrand and fellow championship driver Bob Bondurant had to drive their red-white-and blue Corvette from Orly airport outside Paris to the track 110 miles away. A thundering but elegant machine that sputtered and popped when driven less than 70 mph, it would have been a spectacle on California freeways, no less the quiet roads winding through the French countryside.

"The sidepipe exhausts were wide open, and in every little town we went through, the crowds got bigger," Guldstrand recalled in 2010 for motorsport.com. "When we got to Chartres, we damn near broke the stained glass windows out of the cathedral. A gendarme was standing on his little box in the middle of the square directing traffic, and he gave us a salute as we drove by and about blew him off the box."

No rules changes for the Chase
Steve O'Donnell
Steve O'Donnell
The success of the low downforce package at Darlington Raceway last weekend has not changed NASCAR's thinking regarding the rules package for the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Tuesday.

"Prior to going into Darlington we all met as an industry and talked about what was the most fair package to put together and what did we think would produce some good racing in the Chase. And ultimately wanted to stick with 2015. We felt like teams had put a ton of time into testing those cars. Goodyear's tires to match up that package for our final 10 races. We all felt that was the best way to go. We can take the proper time to evaluate all the things we've looked at for '16 and really dial that in for the '16 package, knowing that a lot of things have been done for '15 and teams are really prepared for the Chase."
