Baltimore Grand Prix's survival wasn't helped by racing's murky future  A racing car industry in transition helped doom the Grand Prix of Baltimore.

Two major racing circuits are merging. A third is considering compressing its season so it doesn’t go head-to-head with the National Football League.

With all the talk Friday about the inability to find dates to hold the Grand Prix in 2014 and 2014, what was lost in the discussion is how changes far beyond Baltimore made coming up with those dates so difficult. That helped bring an end to an Inner Harbor event supporters said brought thousands of people downtown on a slow Labor Day weekend despite detractors who said it created a traffic nightmare that kept people away from work and downtown restaurants. Rahal IndyCar team looking for ride-buyer for second car  It's possible Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver James Jakes could return for a second season with the Indianapolis-based squad, but with the Englishman openly seeking other options in the paddock, team co-owner Bobby Rahal is also on the hunt for a new teammate to field alongside his son Graham in 2014.  [In other words Rahal is looking for a ride-buyer with a bigger check.]

“Right now, we're open next year on our second car,” Rahal told RACER. “We've spoken with James and his father and I think there's plenty of good reasons they'd want to keep going for the sake of continuity and to take advantage of some of the changes we've made, including some that haven't been announced. Penske snags Montoya for IndyCar (Update)  UPDATE “I would say that's probably the best way of putting it,” Penske confirmed. “With his background and capabilities, we have a couple of people that are interested in coming onboard. Based on his background in South America, and that market being important to some of the sponsors we have, we haven't gotten any firm commitments yet, but we feel there's a good possibility it will happen.

“This thing has come together so fast, we haven't had the chance to put everything in place right up front as we'd normally try to do, but there's a lot of opportunities there with Juan, and if we didn't think there were sponsors there to support this, we wouldn't have taken this chance. But no risk, no reward.” More ...

Why no Air Titan at Chicago?  Where was Air Titan, the new-fangled drying system that has been proven to remove moisture from tracks as much as 80% faster than the antiquated method of using jet dryers to blow hot air? Back in Concord, N.C. On a day that the diesel-powered air-compression contraption could have served as savior by ensuring an official finish at a reasonable hour in one of the sport's biggest races. The race was stopped 25 laps - or roughly 15 minutes - short of the halfway point that makes it official. It started one hour and 20 minutes late. It took two hours to dry the 1.5-mile oval (the race was red-flagged for five hours and 10 minutes). Air Titan surely would have cut at least 15 minutes and given NASCAR a chance to declare a winner. Castroneves and Power Welcome Montoya  With the addition of Juan Pablo Montoya to the Team Penske ranks in 2014, the current Penske driverswill be getting exactly what they've been asking for.

Penske's Will Power has never been shy about wanting the fastest teammates possible to push him beyond his limits, and in that department, the Aussie should have his hands full with JPM. Penske's Helio Castroneves has always incorporated his teammates' better practices into his own driving style, and with Montoya, the ageless Brazilian could grow his ever-expanding toolbox with some of what makes the Colombian such a threat on road and street courses.

xxxxAs both drivers shared with RACER Monday morning, having Montoya in a third Team Penske Chevy next year is nothing but a positive development for the legendary program.

p“I'm really happy to see him come onboard, happy to have him in IndyCar, and he's done so much winning in CART and F1, that having such a well-credentialed driver join the team can only have massive benefits,” said Power. “Obviously, I've spent a little bit of time with him. He's a very switched-on guy. I can tell he's going to be an excellent development driver and I've definitely looking forward to working with him.

"I think he's going to help and he's going to push all of us. He's quick, man. He's very serious about what he does and he's seriously fast. That's exactly the type of guy that we need.”

Hendrick: You don’t want a sponsor to feel like they got robbed
Rick Hendrick
RICK HENDRICK, OWNER OF HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS, met with media and discussed NASCAR’s rulings following last weekend’s race at Richmond, Jeff Gordon making the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup field, his thoughts on sponsors, pressures and expectations, and more. FULL TRANSCRIPT:

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THIS WEEK?
“Well, it was probably one of the most, I don’t know, up-and-down weeks. I thought, as the race (at Richmond) ended Jeff (Gordon) was in the race until the monitor showed that he wasn’t. And then I didn’t really learn a lot of the facts until I got back home. And I applaud NASCAR for really looking at things and trying to make it right. I thought he deserved to be in the race and I’m glad he’s in the Chase. So, I think it’s all worked out now and we kind of move on and I’m really ready to focus on the Chase now that we’ve got all four cars in it and hopefully we’ll have a good day here today.” More ...

Farfus wins at Oschersleben and is Rockenfeller’s final challenger

The battle for the DTM crown is only a two-way affair. At the etropolis Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, Brazilian Augusto Farfus (BMW) wins the 400th race in history of the DTM from points’ leader Mike Rockenfeller and Jamie Green (both Audi). After errors by the opposition, this means that 30-year old Farfus is the only challenger to keep Rockenfeller from winning the 2013 title. Reigning DTM champion Bruno Spengler (BMW), Christian Vietoris and Robert Wickens (both Mercedes-Benz) all finished the race without scoring points and thus are no longer in contention for the title in the two remaining rounds of the season. Restart rule changes to be announced Sunday morning  As two Sprint Cup cars running at the speed limit of a two-lane highway approach a designated zone that varies in length from about 60 to 110 feet, a frenzied dance begins. The leader of a restart is in control, and he can stomp the accelerator at any point within two painted lines on the outside wall. The second-place car alongside must keep pace but also allow the leader to cross the finish line first. It sounds simple, but restarts have become among the most complex procedures to administer in NASCAR's premier series.

NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said Saturday that changes to restart procedures will be revealed during Sunday's drivers' meeting. While it's unlikely there would be an abolition of the action-inducing double-file restarts, which were added four years ago because of heavy support from a fan council, NASCAR could eliminate the zones and allow the flagman to determine the restart. Another choice might be putting the leader in a separate row and putting the field behind in side-by-side formation. USA Today

NASCAR to meet with owners, drivers, crew chiefs (Update)  UPDATE Dear AutoRacing1.com, With the new rule announced in NASCAR that I just read about during half time at the Notre Dame at Purdue game on your app for my iPhone, does that end the Common practice of start and park in NASCAR?  Seems as if the practice of starting and parking alters the outcome of a race. Rick Flaute, Dayton, OH.

Dear Rick, There are a lot of things that can alter the outcome of a race.  NASCAR has defined what they expect from their drivers and teams, and the penalties if they get caught.  However, there will always be ways to beat the system and potentially not get caught.  So will a driver slow down ever so slightly to let a teammate past to get the points he needs?  Of course, but they need to do it on their own, or have some secret code in a message so as not to get caught.  What happened in Richmond was just plain stupidity.  The way drivers and teams manipulated the results was very easy to detect.  Mark C.

09/14/13 For the second time in five days, NASCAR has changed the makeup of the Chase for the Sprint Cup due to manipulation of the sport's regular-season finale. Saturday, officials will hold a meeting with drivers, owners, and crew chiefs with the goal of never having to alter the playoff again. [Penalties this week led] NASCAR to call a mandatory meeting of drivers, owners and crew chiefs Saturday at Chicagoland "to hopefully to address and make more clear the path going forward as it applies to the rules of racing and the ethical part of it," according to NASCAR President Mike Helton.

Teammates have always helped one another on the race track, abiding by a set of unspoken and undefined guidelines that have produced long-accepted tactics like allowing a driver to get a lap back, or allowing a driver to lead a lap to collect a bonus point. But with the championship field at stake, those actions become magnified -- which was certainly the case at Richmond, where Bowyer spun suspiciously on his own and Vickers pitted unexpectedly on the final restart, opening the door for Truex to collect a Chase berth.

"We're going to have as much clarity to where the line is, and obviously we drew a line Monday night with the penalties with Michael Waltrip Racing," France said. "So obviously what we're going to do is & no matter what it takes, the integrity of the sport will never be in question. And that's what we're going to make sure, that we have the right rules going forward that are clear so that the integrity of the competitive landscape of the events are not altered in a way or manipulated. And that will be what we will be addressing."

The meeting will be part of a process that will entail "clarifying in a significant way the rules of racing and the rules of the road going forward," France added. He said the sanctioning body wants suggestions from competitors on how to do that. NASCAR.com

Force has partnered with motorsports firm Just Marketing Int’l (JMI) to help find a primary sponsor, and hired entertainment group Rogers & Cowan, as well as Octagon Entertainment, in an effort to bring back "Driving Force," a reality show about his family which ran from '06-07 on A&E.

“We have to move and we have to move fast,” Force said. “We’ve got to go chasing corporate America. We have to build the brand of John Force Racing and all the drivers, and Hollywood can make that happen.” Force noted a show about him – and his NHRA driving daughters Brittany and Courtney – could be invaluable to finding new sponsors. IndyCar teams allowed to increase brake cooling for Houston  INDYCAR officials will allow IZOD IndyCar Series teams to modify their cars for the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston in order to increase brake cooling.

A bulletin issued to teams on Sept. 12 allowed teams to trim the front end plate wicker (Dallara Part #IR12-04B023) to increase brake cooling. Teams can also modify front and rear brake ducts and brake duct backing plates to increase rotor and caliper cooling.

"Based on what we saw at Baltimore, where we saw the hottest temperatures of the year, and with hot temperatures expected again in Houston , we've decided to allow these changes to help teams improve cooling to the brakes, " said Derrick Walker, president of competition and operations, INDYCAR.

Pagenaud eyeing IndyCar title as series heads to Houston
Simon Pagenaud
Simon Pagenaud is clear in his goal for the rest of 2013.

"I'm going into Houston thinking I can win the championship," Pagenaud said. "We have a good car on street circuits so we're going to go for it in Houston."

The second-year driver from France is third in the IZOD IndyCar Series standings - 70 points behind championship front-runner Helio Castroneves - with three races remaining.

That goal isn't lofty for the No. 77 Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports team. In the past three races, Pagenaud has vaulted two positions in the standings and outscored Castroneves by 46 points and second-place Scott Dixon by 66 points. More ...

Tudor to sponsor new United SportsCar Racing series  On Thursday it was announced that Tudor would be the main series sponsor of the new United SportsCar Racing.

Just 135 days from the 2014 Rolex 24 hours at Daytona, the debut race for the new United SportsCar Racing series (the combined Grand-Am and American Le Mans Series), they get a new name and an “entitlement” sponsor.

United SportsCar Racing, we hardly knew ye, because now it's the Tudor United SportsCar Championship. Jeff Gordon angered by MWR manipulation (Update)  UPDATE Gordon "warned Wednesday that the repercussions" of MWR's manipulation of last weekend's race "are only beginning." Gordon said, "It's way beyond you and me, way beyond the sport and the fans. It reaches out much further than that. It has affected far more people than we can understand. It's going to happen again. So it has to be addressed in a big way." He added, "When the time comes, we want to see what we can do to help our teammate win the championship. The difference is there are lines that are drawn, and this crossed over the line. ... It's the integrity of the sport. What level do you go to win?"

Jeff Gordon pissed
Jeff Gordon doesn’t believe Clint Bowyer spun accidentally, and is angry over how Michael Waltrip Racing manipulated the finish of the race Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway.  Gordon appeared to be on his way to finishing 10th in the Sprint Cup standings when Bowyer spun with seven laps remaining in the final race before the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

After pit stops, three laps remained in the race and Joey Logano, thanks in part to MWR driver Brian Vickers coming down pit road, gained enough spots to knock Gordon from one of the 10 automatic Chase bids. More ...

Carpenter's team staying busy during IndyCar's in-season off-season  The IZOD IndyCar Series is currently in an unusual 33-day layoff during the month of September.

From the conclusion of the Grand Prix of Baltimore (Sept. 1) to the doubleheader weekend on Oct. 5-6 for the Shell/Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston, the IndyCar Series teams will not see official on-track action. But that doesn’t mean everyone in the series has decided to go lay out at the beach and work on their tans.

It is quite the opposite at Ed Carpenter Racing, one of the league’s smaller, one-car operations trying to battle the bigger teams in the 19-race campaign. More ...

America's dying affair with the automobile  Recall AR1.com's 2-part series on America's Dying Affair with the Automobile (Part 1 and Part 2) and how we brought to your attention the grave risk it presents to the future of automobile racing.  Another related article on how to fix the problem was Maybe there's something to this 'IndyCar U' idea. Well so far, like any good idea, it fell on deaf ears at Georgetown and 16th in Indy.  What follows is a related article by another author that is yet another wakeup call to those in charge of motorsports.  Will they listen?  Who knows?  Do they care?  Will the last one out please turn off the lights!

Normally, I don’t pay a whole lot of attention to what comes out of NPR. Let’s just say that I don’t fit into their demographics or target audience. But I came across an article from NPR last week that got my attention. It was about the upcoming generation of millennials and their disdain for the automobile. The article focused on how this affected the auto industry, but I got to thinking how it would translate into the future of motorsports. More ...

Johnson wants changes to NASCAR officiating
Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie Johnson called for major changes to the way NASCAR officiates races on Wednesday, four days after two high-profile incidents at Richmond International Raceway continued to be the talk of NASCAR. Johnson proposed halting a race with a red-flag to review any questionable circumstances, similar to an NFL-style replay timeout.

"In my opinion, if there is a question they don't know, they need to stop the race immediately," Johnson said during a promotional event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. "Red flag, pits are closed, figure it out and make the best judgment they can. Because trying to go back on Monday or Tuesday to fix the situation is just too much, and then I learn something about a ripple effect." More ...
