IndyCar noon update from Sonoma The first practice session of the weekend ended this morning with no outstanding issues for anyone. You may have noticed that the Team Penske drivers did not put in many laps today. Earlier in the season, it was announced by Indycar that there would be promoter test days on the Fridays on road and street courses.
With the temperatures only in the 60s and a green track, Team Penske only put in a handful of laps to save some tires. Will power stated "It was cool, so that made the car a lot better. You know, the wind direction wasn't quite right. We were trying to save some tires. It didn't make sense to run very much this morning. I think this next session is going to be real telling. I think everyone is going to run a lot because around the time we're qualifying the temperatures are going to be the same, and hopefully the wind is. We'll get more of an idea then."

Newman rips Stewart after accident (2nd Update) UPDATE
Stewart, speaking Thursday at the Chase media day, indicated he will have a different philosophy over the final 10 races of the season than when he turned Brian Scott at Darlington two weeks ago and cut into the nose of Ryan Newman at Richmond last week. "It doesn't matter if they do or don't," Stewart, a three-time Cup champion, said about NASCAR officials possibly watching him more. "It's time for the Chase now. It's a whole different mindset and a whole different approach each week. We've got to go out and worry about what we have to do to win a championship and not worry about the other stuff."
Will he retaliate against another driver who hits him three times, as Newman did at Richmond? "Probably not," Stewart said. "Even in this first phase [of the Chase], there's half of the field that is not even a factor in what the 16 of us are trying to do. You've got to sit there and race a little different."
France comments on the Chase; Cup Series sponsorship

Also on hand in the Windy City was NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France who sat down with FOXSports.com for an exclusive one-on-one interview. A few questions:
FOXSports.com: You've tweaked the Chase format numerous times; this one appears to be a winner. Will you stick with it for another few years? France: I can't see anything that we would change. We've got everything we want, which is the ability to win and move on -- an elimination format, which people can understand pretty easily. I would be very surprised if there's an idea that changed the Chase in any significant way.

NBC Sports Network continues its low TV ratings for everyone
NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Richmond earned a 1.6 final rating and 2.7 million viewers on NBCSN Saturday night, down 11% in ratings and 12% in viewership from last year (1.8, 3.1M) and down 47% and 45%, respectively, from 2014 on ABC (3.0, 4.9M). Denny Hamlin's win ranks as the lowest rated and least-watched Sprint Cup race from Richmond since at least 2001, falling below the previous marks set last year.
Moreover, the 1.6 rating is tied as the lowest for any Sprint Cup race in at least eight years (excluding rainouts), matching the mark set by Kansas on Fox Sports 1 last year. Saturday's race had unusual competition from the Virginia Tech/Tennessee college football game on ABC, which took place from Bristol Motor Speedway. The so-called "Battle at Bristol" more than doubled NASCAR with 5.8 million viewers. Sports Media Watch

NASCAR looking to clarify penalties issued in Chase (2nd Update) UPDATE Included in NASCAR's new "encumbered" finish rules that go into effect this weekend was news that crew chiefs will no longer be suspended for one race if one lug nut is missing on a wheel in post-race inspection. Scott Miller, NASCAR's senior vice president of competition, said in a teleconference that it had determined that one missing lug nut did not give a team a "serious competitive advantage."
In the Sprint Cup Series, the first offense for one missing lug nut would be a P2 penalty with a $10,000 fine. The second offense would be a $20,000 fine. Now it will take two or more missing lug nuts for a crew chief to be suspended one race. If there are only 18 properly secured lug nuts, the P3 penalty will result in a one race crew chief suspension, the loss of 15 championship owner and driver points and a $20,000 fine. NBC Sports
