IndyCar Sonoma driver quotes from Friday
Rookie sensation Patricio O'Ward
Rookie sensation Patricio O'Ward
JOSEF NEWGARDEN (No. 1 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet):
"I think we were OK. We tested here last week, so we were pretty ready to go. It was difficult this afternoon, to be honest. When I first went out, I wasn't very happy the first run and then we made really good progress the second run and seemed pretty decent compared to last week. We were happy with our cars when we tested here last Thursday, so we felt optimistic coming into the weekend and now we're just trying to go through the motions and make the right steps all the way up through the end of Sunday. That's kind of what you do on a race weekend. You try and make the right decisions every day. So, it was a pretty decent start. Now we've just got to put it together tomorrow and Sunday on race day."

IndyCar Ends '18 Season With Final Scheduled Visit To Sonoma
IndyCar will say goodbye to Sonoma's small crowds and have even less fans when they move to Laguna Seca
IndyCar will say goodbye to Sonoma's small crowds and have even less fans when they move to Laguna Seca
The Verizon IndyCar Series will conclude its '18 season Sunday at Sonoma Raceway in what could be the series' final race at the track. Sonoma is not a part of the '19 schedule, as IndyCar will use Laguna Seca as its new home in Northern California.

IndyCar "wasn't a moneymaker at Sonoma," as track President Steve Page "has said the track lost at least $100,000 each of the past several years."

The track asked for "financial relief in recent contract negotiations," but IndyCar was "unwilling to accommodate." Laguna Seca reportedly will pay $1.2-1.5M "for next year's race"

Mercedes and Pascal Wehrlein to part ways
Pascal Wehrlein's driving career could be over
Pascal Wehrlein's driving career could be resurrected in IndyCar
After six seasons together, including conquering the 2015 DTM title and two seasons in Formula One, Pascal Wehrlein and Mercedes-Benz will part ways by the end of the 2018 season.

As a Mercedes-Benz driver, Pascal became the youngest starter in DTM history in 2013, the series' youngest race winner in 2014 and then youngest champion in 2015.

This success provided the platform for his Formula One debut in 2016 with Manor, followed by a second season with Sauber in 2017. In both years, Pascal delivered stand-out performances which delivered both teams valuable and unexpected constructors' points.

IndyCar title probably will be won on dumb luck
Which of these four drivers will win the IndyCar title? Will they win on skill or IndyCar crapshoot luck?
Which of these four drivers will win the IndyCar title? Will they win on skill or IndyCar crapshoot luck?

Because of the way IndyCar does their yellow flags, closing the pits, and not having a virtual safety car, means race outcomes can become a total crapshoot - based on pure luck and not skill - the Portland race is the latest example. We can give you many others.

The 2018 IndyCar champion will be crowned this weekend at Sonoma in a crapshoot between Scott Dixon, Alexander Rossi, Will Power and Josef Newgarden.

A total crapshoot that could result in the champion winning by pure luck, and not skill, because 1) IndyCar refuses to address its inferior caution flag methodology, 2) Once behind other cars at Sonoma it's nearly impossible to pass, 3) Push-To-Pass can be used as a defense mechanism (why?) meaning the driver trying to pass usually cannot not, making P2P at total waste, and 4) IndyCar can determine to screw a driver by waiting to go to full course yellow, which closes the pits - i.e. they can hold the light until one driver has already entered the pits but others have not - those following finding the pits suddenly closed.

It's really too bad that we have to report this, but that is the way it is until IndyCar does something to fix it. The pits should never be closed and virtual safety car technology is available today and should be implemented.

Mercedes F1 ladder system failure
A frustrated Toto Wolff. It would be cheap enough for Mercedes to spin up a 2-car IndyCar team to run Ocon and its other rideless F1 drivers
A frustrated Toto Wolff

Toto Wolff has hit out at Formula 1 rivals for “hidden agendas and lies” amid the ongoing uncertainty over Esteban Ocon’s future.

Ocon has been backed by Mercedes since his 2015 title-winning GP3 season, an association that facilitated his graduation to Formula 1 with Manor and subsequent Force India switch.
But Ocon is poised to lose his Force India seat to Lance Stroll and options elsewhere appear limited for the Frenchman to remain on the 2019 grid.

Red Bulls run 1-2 in first Singapore GP practice

Ricciardo's lap of 1m39.711s was 0.201s faster than teammate Verstappen to make it an all-Red Bull row 1.

Row 2 was all Ferrari (remember F1 is 99% car 1% driver) with Sebastian Vettel 0.286s behind his former Red Bull teammate but Kimi Raikkonen was a whopping 0.775s behind.
