Mercedes to join V8 Supercars
V8 Supercars team Stone Brothers Racing "will end a long partnership with Ford" in order to help usher Mercedes-Benz into the category next year, according to the AAP. On Wednesday, after almost 12 months of talks, SBR confirmed that they would "merge with Erebus Motorsport and race three vehicles from next year." In the new super alliance, SBR teams up with Erebus Motorsport "who have been dominant" in the Australian GT category racing Mercedes-Benz vehicles. SBR Owner Ross Stone said, "Leaving Ford was not an easy thing to do, but as car markets change here in Australia I felt the time was right for a new challenge, and with Ford's mutual agreement we have decided to part ways"

IndyCar: Hidden gem that nobody watches
2012 IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay
Perhaps you noticed that IndyCar just finished its best season since the organization was known as Championship Auto Racing Teams and NASCAR was considered a regional sport with a drawl.

The product on the track was the finest in a decade, with more power and more passing and all-around better competition. Long Beach saw that first-hand in March with new muscular engines and a chassis that advocated passing. While the Big Three race teams (Penske, Ganassi and Andretti) still dominated the podium, nine different teams reached a podium during the 15-race season.

Eight different drivers won races, and the average number of lead changes per race was 10. In the season finale in Fontana, there were a stunning 30 lead changes.

But chances are you didn't notice.

Larry McReynolds dishes on Danica and JR Motorsports
Former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief Larry McReynolds has worked with some of the most successful organizations in NASCAR. Now a TV analyst with Speed, McReynolds offered up his thoughts this week on the recent departure of Tony Eury Jr. and Tony Eury Sr. from JR Motorsports.

While McReynolds agreed a change was needed based on performance, he had some straight-forward comments about that organization's driver lineup, which this season includes Danica Patrick and Cole Whitt.

“I think their current driver lineup is running as well they’re going to run. In the Nationwide Series, Danica Patrick is probably as good as she’s going to be. She’s going to run between ninth and 15th and maybe score a top five on a really good day," McReynolds said. "I don’t care if you put Chad Knaus in as her crew chief. She’s going to run where she is running.

IndyCar season finale TV Rating
The season's final IndyCar race drew 229,000 viewers to NBC Sports Network Saturday night, even lower than Bull Riding at 237,000 viewers.

It's the third straight race on NBC Sports Network that IndyCar attracted around 250,000 viewers, which equates to about a 0.2 U.S. household rating. Good race, no crowd, no TV rating.  What a way to promote your grand finale.

Stewart/Addington sits in on Hendrick meetings
During a Frontstretch Tech Talk interview with Steve Addington, crew chief for #14-Tony Stewart:
Frontstretch's Mike Neff: "You are affiliated with Hendrick. They supply you with chassis and engines and support. Since they got all four cars in and you guys are in, from the engineering and assistance side, how much are they able to give you? I don't know what the normal number of guys they give you is at the track or shop, but is that stretched thinner now that five cars are in the Chase?"
Steve Addington: "We have a mutual understanding. They know how we're going to the race track and we know how they're going to the race track and what they're going to work on. I am in their Tuesday meeting with their drivers for debrief. Me and Stewart are either there or on the phone to talk with them every Tuesday. We're very open about it and that is something that is the cool part of it that I didn't have last year, having just two drivers with the Dodge camp. Being able to have that affiliation with Hendrick and to have Rick's support and to be able to talk to him one-on-one is really cool. We all share and that is the way it is. We work hard together and we share information and we take it from there and everyone can run and do with it as they want". Frontstretch

McLaren P1 revealed
McLaren Automotive will use its first ever international motor show appearance to preview its next generation ultimate supercar – the McLaren P1 – which takes much of its technological and spiritual inspiration from the company’s Racing division.  The McLaren P1 has one simple goal: to be the best driver’s car in the world on road and track.

At the Paris Motor Show, Mondial de l'Automobile 2012, the McLaren P1 is previewed as a design study. Next year a production version, which the company aims to put on sale within 12 months, will be revealed.

‘The McLaren P1 will be the result of 50 years of racing and road car heritage,’ says McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman Ron Dennis. ‘Twenty years ago we raised the supercar performance bar with the McLaren F1 and our goal with the McLaren P1 is to redefine it once again.’

Comments on AJ Allmendinger reinstatement
NASCAR on Tuesday announced it has reinstated driver AJ Allmendinger following his completion of the sanctioning body’s Substance Abuse Policy Road to Recovery Program.  Allmendinger was indefinitely suspended from the sport on July 24 after testing positive for a banned substance, and subsequently was released from his driving duties with Penske Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Below, SPEED analyst Larry McReynolds offers his perspective on the news:

On his initial reaction to Allmendinger’s reinstatement:
“I’m happy for AJ.  I was very hard on him when everything was going down with his suspension and before he entered the ‘Road to Recovery’ because I don’t have a high tolerance for substance abuse because of my love for the sport.  But if a driver is willing to commit himself to the ‘Road to Recovery,’ I’ll support him 100-percent.  I’m tickled to death for AJ, although I think he should reevaluate who he surrounds himself with.

NASCAR Reinstates Driver AJ Allmendinger UPDATE #2 Another reader writes, Dear AR1.com, Maybe I misjudged previous reports that Dinger’s road to recovery was going to be a long one before he would have a chance to return to NASCAR.  Find it interesting that after Dinger attended Fontana as a guest of Penske, and rumors began to swirl that he may be jumping ship back to IndyCar, all of a sudden he is reinstated.  AR1 and most IndyCar fans know what NASCAR has done to undermine IndyCar especially after Tony George split the sport, like making lucrative moves to deprive the series of any potential star power.  Sure seems the road to recovery in NASCAR has a short cut; just mention interest in moving to IndyCar.  Then again, maybe I misjudged the process and it’s timeline, but it sure seems to have happened a lot, lot quicker than initially projected.  Yet again one of those integrity points that should reinforce the case on how NASCAR has, well, no integrity, but I am sure no major media source would even bother to bring that up and upset the NASCAR gravy train. Andy Fogiel, Lansing, MI

09/18/12 A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, I smell a rat.  Penske parades AJ around in the IndyCar paddock this past weekend looking for an IndyCar ride for him and immediately NASCAR reinstates him in an effort to keep him in the NASCAR fold.  Mordichai Rosen, Los Angeles, CA

09/18/12 NASCAR announced on Tuesday that driver AJ Allmendinger has successfully completed the “Road to Recovery” program and has been reinstated effective immediately.

“I want to thank everyone for their support through this entire process,” said Allmendinger. “I appreciate that NASCAR created the Road to Recovery program,  and am grateful for the opportunity to return to competition. The Road to Recovery program was really helpful to me in getting my priorities reset away from the race track. And, honestly, that helped find my love of racing again and why I began racing in the first place. I’m looking forward to taking this experience and be better for it moving forward.”

Pemberton In For Eury Jr. At JR Motorsports UPDATE The team has confirmed - JR Motorsports director of competition, Ryan Pemberton, will serve as interim crew chief for the No. 7 GoDaddy.com team and driver Danica Patrick this weekend in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway, general manager Kelley Earnhardt-Miller confirmed today.  Earnhardt-Miller said a crew chief for the team beyond this weekend has not been determined.

Pemberton started at JR Motorsports this week, becoming only the second director of competition since the company opened the position in 2007.  In that role, Pemberton oversees car development and personnel management for the No. 88 and No. 7 Nationwide Series teams.

Pemberton’s selection as interim crew chief for this weekend's race comes on the heels of yesterday’s announcement that Tony Eury Jr., formerly crew chief for Patrick and the No. 7 team, is no longer with the company.

Saturday’s Kentucky 300 is set for a 3:30 p.m. ET start and will be televised live on ESPN.  It is race 27 of 33 on the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule.

"I was struggling getting up the ladder in Europe and I knew that if I was coming over here and was able to win the Star Mazda championship I would be able to get into the bigger cars. Lorenzo charges to dominant victory in dramatic Misano race
At this weekend’s Gran Premio Aperol di San Marino e della Riviera de Rimini in Misano it was Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo who charged to a dominant victory in a dramatic race ahead of Valentino Rossi and Álvaro Bautista. It was a problematic start as a partially aborted start due to issues with Karel Abraham’s Cardion AB Racing Ducati prompted a re-start. The race was then shortened to 27 laps due to the additional sighting lap, yet in another twist, pole-sitter Repsol Honda Team’s Dani Pedrosa then also had to start from the back of the grid after wheeling his bike into pit-lane to re-start it.

The story unfolded further and the championship battle took yet another blow, as Pedrosa was taken out in the first few bends by the front wheel of Pramac Racings’ Hector Barberá, as the Repsol rider was making his way up the field. At the front it was Lorenzo who had made the best start, followed by a valiant Valentino Rossi on board his Ducati, and LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl.

It was a crash-strewn affair from the beginning as Abraham, Speed Master’s Mattia Pasini and Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow all tumbled out in the opening laps. Crutchlow’s teammate Dovizioso was sticking to Bradl, as San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Álvaro Bautista took Yamaha’s Ben Spies for fifth. With 19 laps remaining Lorenzo had pulled out a lead over Rossi, who was working tirelessly to keep Bradl at bay.

Oschersleben - Bruno Spengler wins to close on title rival Gary Paffett
Bruno Spengler
Canadian BMW driver Bruno Spengler has scored a dominant win in the eighth DTM round of the season. Thus, the 29-year old reduced his gap to championship leader Gary Paffett (Mercedes-Benz), who finished second, to eleven points. Paffett’s compatriot and fellow Mercedes-Benz driver Jamie Green, who dropped back one place to third in the points’ standings, was the third driver on the podium. In the Magdeburger Borde region, Mike Rockenfeller was the best-placed Audi driver in sixth. Now, the battle for the title will be decided between Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

With an undisputed lights-to-flag victory, Spengler crowned a perfect racing weekend. For the twelfth time in his DTM career, he crossed the finish line in first place. “For me, this track is really fun. It is aggressive on the car, but everything lasted. Gary was very quick and I am delighted that I have brought victory home. Now, the concentration is on the two final rounds. Of course, I will try to score as many victories as possible,” said Spengler, who scored his third race win of the season.

Kyle Busch will run more Nationwide races after missing Chase
Kyle Busch has added one Nationwide Series race to his 2012 schedule and may add a few more after missing the Chase in NASCAR's premier series. Busch was a late addition to Saturday's Nationwide race at Chicagoland Speedway. He replaced his brother, Kurt Busch, who was scheduled to run most of the final eight races in the Kyle Busch Motorsports #54. Kyle's website lists him as the driver for the rest of the Nationwide schedule with the exception of next weekend at Kentucky.

"We're playing it by ear, seeing what Kurt wants to do, what sponsor Monster Energy wants to do,'' the 2009 Nationwide Series champion said of the remainder of the season. Busch said "it sucks'' not being in the Chase. He hopes adding more Nationwide races will help his KBM program that has won only one race -- Kurt at Richmond in the spring -- this season. ESPN

Earnhardt Jr changes engines; will start from back
Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start from the rear in Sunday's GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, after his #88 Hendrick Motorsports team opted to change engines after Saturday's qualifying session. "I don't think we are super concerned," Letarte said.

"We had a great car in practice and qualified really well, so we showed we have good speed. Fortunately, this is a race track that there are multiple pit strategies, and it's not a really simple, straightforward pit strategy to call. NASCAR Wire Service

Mitch Evans an emerging superstar of motorsport
Mitch Evans
Mitch Evans has been heralded as a “gifted” but “incredibly raw talent” by his mentor Mark Webber who has also reaffirmed his commitment to help the young Kiwi's dream of getting to the top of motorsport.

The 18-year-old Evans, driving for the MW Arden team that Webber backs, won the 2012 GP3 title in Italy last weekend, confirming his potential and giving him the chance to move up to GP2 next year.

Evans won a $400,000 bonus from tire giant Pirelli provided he takes the next step, which is just one rung below F1. Evans now has to find the rest of the $2m-plus budget to turn that into a reality. He has a GP2 test drive set up for later in the year.

Firestone Racing IndyCar technical manager Page Mader retiring
Page Mader has logged an impressive career with Bridgestone Firestone that spans 40 years, the last 33 as a leader in the racing division. He’s been behind the development of great Firestone race tires in drag racing, sprint cars, modifieds, sports cars, Firestone Indy Lights and the IZOD IndyCar Series, among others. To say Mader has cast a long shadow over the Firestone Racing program would be proper.

Now the general manager of race tire development for Firestone Racing, Mader is hanging up his pyrometer (which measures tire temperatures), headset and uniform following tonight’s season finale, the MAV TV 500. In a joint effort to commemorate his “tire”-less efforts, INDYCAR and Firestone Racing have arranged for Mader to throw the checkered flag on his career in the most appropriate manner – by waving the checkered flag to conclude his last race.

IndyCar/LAT USA
When the checkered flag dropped on Saturday’s Auto Club Speedway Foundation 100, Frenchman Tristan Vautier became the sixth driver to win a Firestone Indy Lights Championship for Sam Schmidt Motorsports.

Vautier finished fourth in the 50-lap race on Auto Club Speedway’s 2-mile, D-shaped oval to clinch the championship. He edged out teammate Esteban Guerrieri for the crown by just eight points at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

Though Guerrieri finished third and ahead of Vautier, he could only gain three points on his teammate. Guerrieri has now finished second to an SSM teammate in the Indy Lights championship in back-to-back years. He was runner-up to Josef Newgarden in 2011.

Saturday Pre-race Report
Carlos Munoz made the Indy Lights a snoozer, leading all laps en route to the win. David Ostella finished second, with Esteban Guerrieri third. The season championship went to Tristan Vautier, who finished fourth.

"I came over to the USA because of the Mazda Road to Indy," said Vautier. "I was struggling getting up the ladder in Europe and I knew that if I was coming over here and was able to win the Star Mazda Championships I would be able to get into the bigger cars. That was the goal. I won the championship last year. I cannot be thankful enough to Mazda for what they do for young drivers. Obviously, you have to earn it. You have to win championships. But it really rewards the winners, and you know, they don't pick you up because they like you the pick you up because you earned it. You have to win to get into this scholarship system so I'm really thankful to that, I wouldn't be here without them."

Three-way battle for DTM title causes excitement – Spengler on pole
A happy Spengler
The battle for the DTM title couldn’t have been more exciting: in qualifying for the third-last round of the season, BMW driver Bruno Spengler proved to have the strongest nerves and claimed pole position. The Canadian, third in the drivers’ standings, completed the lap of the 3.696 kilometers long track in 1:20.916 minutes. Thus, Spengler is up front of the starting grid for the third time this season and for the 14th time in his DTM career.

“Being on pole again is a great feeling. Today, it was close and tough, but the car was just excellent. Tomorrow, I will give everything to win the race,” the 29-year old said.

Pigot Takes Win Number Eight as Brabham Clinches Title
Spencer Pigot continued where he left off yesterday afternoon by dominating this morning’s 14th and final round of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda. The 18-year-old from Orlando, Fla., took an instant affinity to the 3.27-mile Virginia International Raceway road course, posting the fastest lap in every session aboard his Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing Van Diemen-Mazda, qualifying on the pole for both the weekend’s rounds and never being headed for a single inch in the pair of 14-lap races.

Even that wasn’t enough to prevent teammate and rival Matthew Brabham from clinching the championship after a steady drive to eighth place. Brabham saw his points advantage dwindle from 41 at the beginning of the weekend to just seven in  the final tally, but that was all he required to tie up the Mazda scholarship prize, worth $375,000, which will enable him to move up to the Star Mazda Championship, the next rung on the Mazda Road to Indy ladder, in 2013.

Pedrosa wins pole for Honda at Misano
Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa scored his 4th pole of 2012 in a hectic Qualifying session for tomorrow's San Marino Grand Prix. The last time Pedrosa took the pole position in Misano was in 2010, when he completed a perfect weekend: pole, circuit record and victory. He is now the most successful Spanish rider of all time in pole positions in the premier class with 23, and equals Max Biaggi in sixth position overall.

Pedrosa squeezed out Jorge Lorenzo by 0.018s to steal pole on his final flying lap of the 60 minute session, during which both sides of the Repsol Honda garage worked non-stop to make up for lost time caused by bad weather yesterday and in this morning's FP3.

Video: Gil de Ferran averages 241 mph around Fontana UPDATE A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, I was sitting in the Honda hospitality and heard Paul Tracy say he saw 270 mph on the speedo going into turn one in the draft that year.  Real Racing. Real Men. Scotty M.

09/15/12 Gil de Ferran's Closed Course World Record qualifying run of 241.428 mph (388.537 km/h) on October 28, 2000 at California Speedway in Fontana, California in a CART IndyCar and AR1.com was there.  Note at the 6-second mark you can see de Ferran's rear wing is dragging a parachute behind it (Hanford Device) and he still averaged over 241 MPH.  Most believe without that parachute his average speed would have been over 250 mph. Today's IndyCars qualified at 216 mph (3.4 seconds per lap slower) and they scare the living daylights out of the driver.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. shopping for more sponsors for No. 88
Dale Earnhardt Jr. won’t have Diet Mountain Dew as a sponsor for as many races in 2013 as he did in 2012, but he’s not worried about Hendrick Motorsports finding sponsors for those races.

NASCAR’s most popular driver will have sponsorship from the Army National Guard for 20 races next year and Diet Mountain Dew for an unspecified number. Mountain Dew sponsored 16 races this year while another Pepsi product, Amp, sponsored four. The National Guard had 18 races this year. Earnhardt is not worried about having an unsponsored car at Hendrick. The organization has had Hendrickcars.com on Kasey Kahne’s car for select races this year when it didn’t sell sponsorships.

Drivers respect Conway's decision to step aside
There was unanimous support in IndyCar on Friday for driver Mike Conway, who pulled out of the season finale because he was uncomfortable racing on the oval at Auto Club Speedway.

"I was thinking about it last night and I thought, 'If you watched him through the chicane at Baltimore, bravery isn't an issue for Mike Conway,'" said four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti. "I think it takes a very brave person to say, 'No, I don't like doing that.'"

Conway participated in Wednesday's open test at Fontana, where IndyCar is back for the first time since 2005. Sometime during the eight-hour session, the British driver decided he didn't want to run Saturday night in the 500-mile race.
