Points battles close as TUDOR Championship heads to Circuit of The Americas
The weather at the Circuit of the Americas, where teams are gathered for the penultimate round of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, has been close – as in very hot and humid. Close and hot also describe the battles for the championship in the series' two GT classes.

While Prototype drivers Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi of Action Express Racing enjoy a daunting 16-point lead after two straight victories in their Corvette DP, the GT Le Mans (GTLM) contenders are separated by only six points and five drivers, among three teams and three different manufacturers are tied for the lead in the GT Daytona (GTD) category.

In GTLM, the deciding factor may be a driver who is no longer in the running for the title.

Corvette racing legend Dick Thompson: 1920-2014
Dick Thompson
Think of names in the great pantheon of those who made eternal reputations with the Corvette: Arkus-Duntov, naturally. Guildstrand. Mitchell. And in with that trio was inevitably The Flying Dentist out of Washington, D.C., Dr. Dick Thompson, arguably the greatest pure Corvette racer of them all.

He died last weekend at the age of 94. Not only was Thompson a legend among Corvette competitors, but he was also one of the dwindling number of surviving links to the great postwar rise of road racing in the United States. Thompson was one of the guys who put it on the map. He came to racing late at age 32, but his very first race was a memorable one, the inaugural 12 Hours of Sebring in 1952. Thompson and his friend, Bill Kinchloe, drove down from D.C. to Florida in Thompson’s MG TC, gridded the car, finished eighth overall, then drove home.

Gibbs says crew chief changes coming
Joe Gibbs said he expects to announce multiple changes to the team's driver-crew chief lineup within about two weeks. "We've already decided," Gibbs said Wednesday of the moves, "but we need to talk to the sponsors and have quite a few discussions yet with people." Gibbs said the changes would be for next season. "We're kind of crew chief driven here," Gibbs said.

"We spent a lot of time talking to all of our crew chiefs and making sure that we had the right lineup. The other key people you have to have involved in that, it always starts with the drivers. The drivers have strong feelings on who they feel like they can match up with. "That driver has got to believe in that crew chief, and that crew chief has got to believe in that driver. If you look at that over the years, that's a very hard thing to keep together. It is complicated. I think we've talked our way through all that. We've had a lot of intense meetings."

Tony Stewart case will go to grand jury (Update) UPDATE
Tony Stewart
Here are some things to know about a grand jury in New York (primarily from the New York Grand Jury Handbook) and what will happen next:

-Grand jury proceedings are confidential. So we do not know when it is meeting unless a witness speaks publicly. The testimony is only witnessed by the grand jury, the prosecutor and other court personnel, including a stenographer. Any witness can speak publicly after giving testimony.

-The prosecutor, Michael Tantillo, did not have to let anyone know he was taking the case to the grand jury. There is no way of knowing how successful the prosecutor is when going to the grand jury, because in order to protect those investigated but never indicted, there is no public record of the grand jury proceedings. This is a rare case in the sense that everyone knows Stewart was under investigation so there is no confidentiality to worry about in the prosecutor announcing that he is taking it to the grand jury.

DRS to be introduced on GP2 cars in 2015
GP2 Series organizers have announced today that a DRS device will be introduced in the Series next season. CEO Bruno Michel talks about the decision.

Why has GP2 Series decided to introduce DRS next season?
We’ve always said that GP2 was able to produce some amazing races without the addition of DRS or any other devices, and once again the 2014 season has proved that with some close racing and exciting on-track battles. However, we also have to make sure that we keep in line with our mission statement: preparing the drivers for the next step, Formula One. Since the inception of the Series, we designed a car for a three-year cycle, but for the first time this year, we decided instead to keep the third generation car for six seasons, in order to cut the costs and support our teams. Therefore, the next generation car will be introduced in 2017 and our current chassis is already four years old. But, it is important to keep adding modifications - at a reasonable cost - that will slightly tweak the technical features of our car. Formula One is constantly evolving. It is impossible for GP2 to remain with the same car over a long period of time when its philosophy is to prepare the drivers for F1. Bearing this in mind, we thought that DRS was the best technical development to introduce and we discussed it with the teams over a year ago. They were all in favor of it as they felt it would make GP2 even more attractive to the drivers, but only if it was an identical system to the one used in F1. Finally, it is well known that some of the circuits on the calendar are renowned to be difficult in terms of overtaking opportunities – even for GP2. DRS will be an added value on those tracks.

On the other hand, judge Carrie Ann Inaba gave the pair high marks.

What might happen to Tony Stewart?
Tony Stewart
This undoubtedly will be one of the longest weeks in Tony Stewart‘s life.

Later this week, a New York state district attorney's office is expected to announce its findings in the investigation of last month's tragedy that involved Stewart and also claimed the life of young racer Kevin Ward Jr.

Stewart could be absolved of any criminal blame in the case, he could be indicted directly by the district attorney's office, or the D.A. could forward the case to the grand jury to determine if Stewart should stand trial or not in Ward's death.

The Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff's Office announced last Thursday that it had forwarded its investigatory report of the August 9 incident at an upstate New York dirt track to the D.A.'s office.

Indianapolis, Ind. (16 September 2014) – The 2014 race season may be over, but that didn’t mean it was time for Rising Star Racing drivers Josef Newgarden, Spencer Pigot and Neil Alberico to hang up their helmets just yet. Just a few weeks after the end to a stellar season for all three drivers, including a Pro Mazda Championship title for Pigot, the three were back in race mode over the weekend testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

At the Chris Griffis Memorial Test which saw cars take to the infield road course of the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Pigot got the opportunity to put in laps in an Indy Lights car with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian. He quickly proved himself capable in the Indy Lights machinery as he topped all four practice sessions foreshadowing what he hopes to be a successful Indy Lights season.

Kamui Kobayashi says he is saddened by the current state of affairs at the Caterham Formula 1 team.

Having made his return to Formula 1 with the Leafield-based outfit this season, Kobayashi's future again came under threat when Tony Fernandes sold the team to a consortium of Swiss and Middle Eastern investors in July.

Kobayashi, a podium finisher in the top echelon, was subsequently forced to vacate his cockpit for endurance racer Andre Lotterer at the Belgian Grand Prix, while he received a last-minute telephone call to return in Italy.

Kligerman impressive during Lights test at IMS
Parker Kligerman
Indianapolis, IN - September 16, 2014 - Parker Kligerman completed two successful test days and earned a P2 spot on the scoring charts in an Indy Lights car for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports during the Mazda Road to Indy "Chris Griffis Memorial Test" on Saturday and Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Although not a stranger to the world of open-wheel racing, Kligerman was calculated and cautious during the initial test session, so as to learn as much as he could and get familiar with the car, setup and track.

Throughout the second, third and fourth test sessions, the 24-year-old, Westport, Connecticut native continually improved his time, eventually earning a best time of 1:20.5187. The time was only 0.35 seconds off the pace of Spencer Pigot, the 2014 Pro Mazda Series champion.

"Overall, I'm really happy with the results and had such a great time," said Kligerman. "I was able to get within three-tenths of last year's Star Mazda champion, and the guy that has lead every session, so that's really awesome.
