Rossi pleased with first result
Alexander Rossi made his Formula 1 race debut and contributed to the Manor Marussia F1 Team's second best combined race result of the season in the 2015 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix. Rossi ended the grueling night race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in 14th position, with his teammate Will Stevens crossing the line in 15th place.

The weekend began with a tough opening day of running on Friday, which saw track time shortened after a brief encounter with the unforgiving walls of the notoriously challenging street circuit. Despite the small set back, Rossi soon settled into the team and experienced a productive Free Practice 3 and Qualifying sessions under the spectacular Singapore lights.

Michelin Promises To Let Drivers Race Flat Out If It Wins Tender To Supply Tires
Michelin has "promised tires that will let grand prix drivers race flat out at all times if it wins the tender to supply Formula 1 from '17," according to Andrew Benson of the BBC. Many drivers "dislike the current Pirelli tires, which they have to manage to require race distance by driving within themselves."

Michelin Competitions Dir Pascal Couasnon said, "Michelin could really help the sport come back to its origins." He added that his tires would be three seconds a lap faster and would enable drivers to "express their talent." Couasnon went on to say, "I don't want to talk about Pirelli but at least the philosophy Michelin brings is high, stable performance for a given lifespan."

"We definitely didn't have the fastest kart," said Dixon, who teamed with Andrew Drake, Michael Bizzell and Nathaniel Borden in the No. 9 Target-sponsored kart. Getty Images for NASCAR
The intensity from NASCAR's elimination-style Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs ramped up earlier than ever this year. Defending series champion #4-Kevin Harvick shoved six-time champion #48-Jimmie Johnson to express his frustration about a midrace clash during the MyAFibRisk.com 400, the first race of the 2015 Chase.

Harvick cut a tire and crashed into the Turn 3 wall at Chicagoland Speedway a few laps later on the way to a 42nd-place finish. Johnson went to Harvick's motorhome to discuss the incident after the race. He was standing outside with Josh Jones, the business development director of Harvick's company, when the driver of the #4 driver emerged from his bus. Within a few seconds, Harvick shoved Johnson in the chest with a closed fist and, separated by Jones, began jawing at his rival. Jones restrained Harvick until Harvick's wife DeLana intervened and the two of them coaxed him into a waiting Chevy Suburban.

NASCAR says Gordon's restart was "close" but legal
Gordon got away with one
Gordon got away with one
NASCAR admits that Jeff Gordon's restart on Lap 144 was "close" to being illegal, but officials ruled that his pass of leader Kyle Busch was good. "It was close and all of our resources, especially our new resources ... that helped us make our decision," said Richard Buck, managing director for the Sprint Cup Series, after Sunday's race at Chicagoland Speedway.

"That official is looking and listening for when they fire," Buck told reporters, referring to when the cars accelerate.

"It gives us another perspective. He calls up to the tower and will give his input. We start to pull together all of the other resources from the video we have available to us. That's when we come over the radio and say, if this is the case, the restart is under review. That allows us to pull the information in and make the decision."

Series officials reviewed Gordon's restart and a decision came about 10 laps later.

Asked about the timeframe for announcing the decision, Buck said: "The most important thing for us is to get it right and be consistent. We'll take whatever measures necessary to make sure we get it right." NBC Sports

Chevy will continue to run the SS
Chevy SS
Chevy SS
Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports for Chevy, was asked Sunday about the future of the Chevy SS in Sprint Cup competition with the company's Australian manufacturing facilities shutting down the next couple years.

Campbell: The specifics on that, in our industry, anything on the forward product portfolio, we don't talk about in too much detail until it's the right time. Right now the SS is play in the showroom and on the racetrack obviously. We're fuel injected, V8, rear wheel drive in the showroom. Same here at the track. We love that relevance, that connection. We really think it's genuine, authentic. It's kind of how it used to be, if you will. . .

For Chevy, our SS will be our play here for the near future. If we make a change in the showroom that necessitates a change for the track, we'll certainly go through that process again with NASCAR and our counterparts. NASCAR

Jeff Gordon said Hendrick Motorsports has kept a close eye on the competition to set the benchmark for improving in the 10-race playoffs. "We know what we're lacking," he said Thursday during Chase Media Day.

"You know what you've got to do to make your car better. How you do it is another challenge, and you learn from your competitors. We have spies everywhere. We constantly are looking at our competitors. "We feel like, right now, we're bringing the absolute best car we've had all year to (Chicago), and we'll do that for nine more weeks after that."

The engine is the music
John Newman (R)
One would expect that singers listen to music at full volume when they're driving. But John Newman astonished us all in Ferrari when he said he never has the radio on when he is behind the wheel: "I need time to think, I need time to listen to the engine, it frees my mind."

The 25 year old is, of course, now world-famous after his single "Love Me Again" dominated the English charts in 2013. However, his great passion as a youngster was for cars and he'd even begun studying engineering before devoting himself full-time to his music.

Newman did not hide his enthusiasm on his first visit to Maranello in the run-up to the release on October 16 of his second album, "Revolve", which comes hot on the heels of his second single "Come and Get It".

In response to an allegation that Kevin Ward Jr. was responsible for his own death when he was struck and killed by a car driven by Tony Stewart, Ward's parents insisted in a court filing Friday that the three-time Sprint Cup champion was to blame.

"[Ward] was killed as a result of the malicious, reckless, intentional, and grossly negligent conduct of Defendant Stewart, who has a well-documented and rampant history of engaging in uncontrolled, vindictive and temperamental behavior on the race track, including, but not limited to, purposely and vengefully crashing into other race cars," the Ward parents' filing states.

Harvick leads at Watkins Glen last month

With few delays, the massive repaving project at Watkins Glen International is moving along at or ahead of schedule. Top coat layers from general contractor Ajax Paving Industries Inc., were being put down on some areas of the 3.4-mile circuit this week, while a base coat was still being laid down in other areas. The work is expected to be completed by Nov. 1.

The $12 million project is one of the most ambitious endeavors in the 59-year history of the historic track. The entire 3.4-mile configuration, including the 2.45-mile section used by NASCAR, will be repaved in time for the 2016 season. The pit lane is also being repaved. According to a WGI statement, the project is the equivalent of paving a 22-mile, two-lane highway at a thickness of 1.5 inches. It is the first repave of the track since 1989.

Formula E launches Super Pole shoot-out
Formula E to introduce a new qualifying procedure
The fight to secure Julius Baer pole position for this season's Formula E races will be decided in a five-car, 15-minute shoot-out.

As was the case in season one, the drivers will be placed into four groups of five by means of a lottery. However, these sessions have now been shortened to just six minutes. This means the drivers will only have time for an out-lap, a warm-up lap at 170kW and one flying lap at 200kW.

The overall five fastest drivers from these four sessions will then go out one by one in the Super Pole shoot-out. The fifth fastest driver from the group stages goes out first, when he crosses the line to start his flying lap, the pitlane light turns green and the fourth fastest driver heads out onto the track and so on.

Phelps said, "I think the beauty of the format is it's going to happen anyway."  USA TODAY

Fitted with the latest Mercedes power unit, Nico Rosberg lap of 1m47.995s led the opening free practice session for the Singapore Grand Prix over Mercedes Formula 1 teammate Lewis Hamilton by 0.319s. But Rosberg was on top only because Hamilton had made a few small mistakes, including missing the apex at Turn 2 and running wide a couple of times.
