Matt Kenseth meets the media
Matt Kenseth
MATT KENSETH, No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

How does it feel to be back in New Hampshire?

"Looking forward to getting to work. We ran pretty good here in the first race. Kyle (Busch) was able to win. I don't remember where we finished, but we ran pretty decent, so just looking forward to getting rolling today and see what we got."

Should drivers be penalized if they throw a punch with a closed fist?

"I didn't really see any of it to be honest with you and I don't know. That's two good answers. I didn't see it and I don't know. I practiced that one this morning."

F1 engine deals in crisis mode
Horner openly prays in front of the media that Ferrari will supply their teams engines in 2016
(GMM)  There was almost as much action going on behind the scenes as there was on a slippery Suzuka circuit on Friday.

The big topic is engines -- who is going to get what, and who is going to left without a 'power unit' to fire.

For Lotus, time is clearly running out. Bernie Ecclestone told a media outlet on Friday that - with a potentially terminal court date looming - Monday is the Enstone team's deadline for a deal with Renault.

That could explain the odd timing of Pastor Maldonado's 2016 deal, long after the sun had gone down in Singapore.

NASCAR Car Manaufacturers reps discuss issues
Representatives from NASCAR's three car manufacturers - Jim Campbell (Chevy), Dave Pericak (Ford) and Ed Laukes (Toyota) - recently talked about this season and how teams from their respective companies have fared. Here's a sampling of what Campbell (Chevy's U.S. vice president, performance vehicles and motorsports), Pericak (director of Ford Performance) and Laukes (Toyota Motor Sales USA's vice president of marketing, performance and guest experience) had to say:

On the 2015 season
Laukes(Toyota): "Toyota has come a long way since 2007. I can remember when we would be really struggling even to get into the show, much less have five Camrys in contention for the championship."
Campbell (Chevy): "We don't have all our eggs in one basket. They're spread all across those teams. We've been working for months to prepare for these last 10 races."
Pericak (Ford): "The Penske team has performed very well. Overall we've struggled across all of our teams this year. We're going to be making necessary changes to strengthen everybody's performance."

5 Reasons why it's hard not to love the Japanese Grand Prix

  1. Japanese Fans
    Japanese Fans
    Fanatical fans
    - Yes, there's a passion and fervor at Monza that's hard to beat. And there's a peculiarly dogged British determination to support the sport through hail or gale at Silverstone. But here in Japan, fandom is on a whole other level. From carefully crafted flags and banners to bespoke driver-inspired plush toys and children immaculately dressed out in repro team kit, Suzuka's crowd has elevated fanaticism to the realm of some kind of slightly odd but utterly awesome performance art.
  2. Odd stunts - Time was when wherever F1 went the local PR machinery went into overdrive dreaming up mad stunts for drivers to do. US race? Then it must be ‘dress as a cowboy day'! For some reason, in recent years, all of that has gone by the wayside – except in Japan. Here there's still an irresistible urge to make drivers do the darnedest things. Indeed, we're far from immune and this year we had a go at turning Dany and Daniel into wrestlers and superheroes. You can check out the results at: www.infiniti-redbullracing.com/video/f1-v-sumo-no-contest

Red Bull driver Kvyat put down a lap of 1m48.277s, finishing just 0.023 seconds clear of Rosberg, with Lewis Hamilton over half a second back in third.

Daniel Ricciardo was 4th 0.820s back, followed by Ferrari pair Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel.

A.J. Foyt Undergoes Successful Knee Replacement Surgery in Houston
AJ Foyt
AJ Foyt
A.J. Foyt underwent surgery yesterday to implant an artificial knee in his right leg, replacing the antibiotic-infused cement spacer he received August 10th. It was the second phase of treatment for a staph infection which surfaced in his artificial knee in late July.

"My doctors said everything went perfectly, so I was relieved to hear that," said Foyt. "My right leg was clear of the infection so the doctors were able to give me a new knee. They were really pleased with how everything went." It is the second time that Foyt has been hospitalized with a staph infection, the first time occurred in January, 2012 in his left artificial knee. Foyt is expected to remain in the Houston hospital for several days.

While Foyt was awaiting his surgery, his race team was in Elkhart Lake, Wis. Tuesday as several teams tested at the beautiful 4-mile road course in the Wisconsin Dells area. Nine drivers from four other teams (Ganassi, Penske, Rahal Letterman Lanigan and CHF Racing) joined Sato in the Verizon IndyCar Series' return to the historic track. The last year an IndyCar raced there was in 2007 under the Champ Car World Series sanctioning body.

Sato, who joined IndyCar in 2010, had never seen the circuit before this week but was impressed. Following are his thoughts on the experience.

On his impression of the track (before getting on it): "I had heard about how this is everyone's favourite track and after seeing some past footage of it, I was very impressed and excited to get on it."

On running it in the No. 14 ABC Supply Honda Indy car: "Love it! The track is such a classic style - narrow and fast – and it's an incredible feeling. So much fun! I feel it is a great fit for a powerful Indy car, and the cornering speed was very impressive plus it is surrounded by beautiful greens and woods. Great track!"

On its similarities to other tracks he's run:  "It is nothing like other tracks in the USA I've run, but in Europe I think perhaps it's like a mixture of Imola in San Marino and old Hockenheim in Germany or the Brands Hatch GP course in the UK but with less elevation change.  The characteristics these tracks share with Road America are that they are exceptionally narrow and fast and have a long straight with dense forest. Drivers and fans love these kinds of tracks."

On the most thrilling part of the track: "Both the Carousel and the Kink are unbelievably fast and thrilling. You need a good commitment for Turn 1 too."

On the passing opportunities: "I think there are a few. T1, T5 and T12 are the most popular I imagine."

On possibility of side-by-side racing there: "It's narrow but you can. You need a good trust and commitment but T5 has a good space for it."

On the bratwurst (considered best in America): "No I haven't eaten one yet but I have to then!"

Japanese GP: Sainz Jr. tops wet opening practice
Carlos Sainz Jr.
Carlos Sainz Jr.
Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz Jr. turned the fastest lap on a very wet Suzuka Circuit to top opening practice for the Japanese GP. His lap of 1m49.434s on intermediate tires beat the 2nd fastest driver, Daniil Kvyat in the Red Bull, by 1/2 second. The first two drivers set their times on intermediate tires on a slightly drying track. The top drivers (Hamilton, Rosberg, Vettel and Raikkonen) all set their times on full wets.

Nico Rosberg was 3rd in the Mercedes ahead of the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel and the 2nd Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.

One and done: IndyCar circuit not returning to New Orleans

Lewis Hamilton could not win when his HP advantage was negated on the tight city streets of Singapore
(GMM)  Pirelli on Thursday moved to dismiss a conspiracy theory about Mercedes' mysterious loss of performance last week in Singapore.

The world champions' sudden slump had tongues wagging in the paddock, with most seasoned observers agreeing that it was - at the very least - strange.

"In all my time in formula one I have never seen a team suddenly lose one and a half seconds (per lap) in one race," said McLaren-Honda's Fernando Alonso.

"Probably the mystery will never be solved, but that's formula one," he added.

Daniil Kvyat
(GMM)  Daniil Kvyat on Thursday insisted he is not worried about the future -- not his own, nor that of his Red Bull team.

At present, Red Bull is without an engine deal for 2016 and threatening to pull both of its teams out of F1 if Ferrari does not release an 'A' spec supply.

And Kvyat might have another reason to be worried, as Red Bull Racing has not yet taken up the option on his contract, amid rumors the energy drink company is looking to promote Toro Rosso sensation Max Verstappen.

Insurance firm says Stewart's policy doesn't cover lawsuit
If found guilty, Stewart will be writing a big check
The insurance company that covers Tony Stewart Racing has filed court documents saying Stewart's policy does not cover the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the parents of Kevin Ward Jr. Axis Insurance Company filed a complaint for declaratory judgment Friday, asking the court to rule that it is not responsible to cover Stewart, saying its policy covers neither the race Stewart was participating in nor claims brought by one driver against another.

Stewart's attorney had no comment to the filing. Stewart was competing in an Empire Super Sprints event Aug. 9, 2014, at Canandaigua (New York) Motorsports Park when his car struck and killed the 20-year-old Ward, who had gotten out of his car and walked out on the track while the race was under caution. Ward's parents contend in their lawsuit that Stewart could have avoided their son just as the other drivers in the race did, and they seek unspecified damages for their son's pain and suffering as well as the potential economic support he could have provided for them.

Newgarden to stay with Carpenter Fisher Hartman Racing for 2016
Josef Newgarden
Josef Newgarden
Josef Newgarden confirmed to Motorsport.com that he's staying with Carpenter Fisher Hartman Racing for 2016.

An official announcement is expected sometime this week.

"My future is where you expected it to be," Newgarden told Motorsport, "and I'm happy about that. Obviously teams like Ganassi and Penske are appealing, given their heritage, but there's also a lot of satisfaction from helping to take a younger team into the winner's circle. It's so fulfilling finding success in that way."

Although he'll be with CFH in 2016, Newgarden's long-term future is far from set. Rumors around the paddock suggest he's hoping for something to open up with Ganassi, Penske or Andretti for 2017.

The reason: At some point in 2016 - the precise date hasn't yet been announced - driver's licenses from those states will no longer be considered sufficient to clear airport security and board an airplane.

IndyCar Road America test notes

Juan Montoya tears around Road America. The IndyCar lap times were nowhere near the 15 year old CART lap record

Sunny skies and a surprisingly large week-day crowd greeted five Verizon IndyCar Series teams (10 cars) as IndyCar held a test at Road America in preparation for next June’s return of the series to America’s National Park of Speed.

In a nutshell, here are some notes and comments gathered during the lunch break after the first four hours of practice.

• Observers thought that perhaps a thousand open-wheel fans paid to have paddock access and roam the winding, four-mile RA circuit to watch teams from: Rahal Letterman Lanigan (Graham Rahal); AJ Foyt (Takuma Sato); Carpenter Fischer Hartman(Josef Newgarden); Chip Ganassi (Dixon, Kanaan, Kimball) and Penske (Montoya, Pagenaud, Castroneves, Power).
