Marquez takes sixth win and extends lead after incident with Pedrosa
Marc Marquez
Championship leader Marc Marquez, starting from pole for the seventh time this season, extended his Championship lead with a fantastic win - his sixth of the season, but en route he and teammate Dani Pedrosa touched on lap six and as a result, Dani crashed out of the race.

Marc and Dani slipped back to 2nd and 3rd on the first lap but they both chased Lorenzo down and Dani set a new fastest race lap on lap two with 1'48.565. Dani passed Marc on lap five and the two Repsol Honda riders began to catch Lorenzo. It was during this chase that in the back straight, Marc and Dani briefly touched and during the contact, Marc caught a cable on Dani's real wheel and it snapped - disabling Dani's traction control and causing him to crash.

Farfus wins at Zandvoort – Rockenfeller is the new DTM champion
Farfus jumps to an early lead
The battle has been decided: in the ninth round of the 2013 DTM season at Zandvoort in The Netherlands, Mike Rockenfeller claimed an early championship title. In the penultimate round of the season at the dune circuit on the North Sea coast, second place for the 29-year old was enough.

Thus, prior to the DTM finale at Hockenheim, he is leading the drivers’ standings beyond reach for Augusto Farfus (BMW), for whom even victory at Zandvoort wasn’t enough. For the Brazilian, it was his third win of the year. Timo Scheider (Audi) scored his best result of the season in third place. In ninth position, Gary Paffett was the best-placed Mercedes-Benz driver.

Goodyear Set to Roll Out Multi-Zone Tread 2.0 at Kansas
Multi-Zone Goodyears
With the successful debut of its new multi-zone tread tire at Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this month, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company will come back with the second application of the concept at Kansas Speedway next week. Goodyear has employed multi-zone tread technology on passenger car tires for nearly a decade. In its NASCAR application, the multi-zone tire features two distinct tread compounds on the same tire - one for traction and one for endurance.

"We were extremely happy with the maiden voyage of the multi-zone tread tire we brought to Atlanta -- the tire performance was excellent," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of race tires. "We are excited to utilize the same multi-zone tread technology on a different application. Atlanta is a highly abrasive surface that wears tires quickly, but Kansas is recently paved and doesn't wear tires at all. For Atlanta, we knew the Gen-6 car would be faster, thus putting more stress on the right-side tires. But, because the track surface is well worn and lacks grip, just going to a harder compound wouldn't be a good solution.

Magnussen excluded after dominant victory at Paul Ricard
Unlike NASCAR where cheaters always keep their race win, in other forms of motorsports cheaters have their victory stripped from them.

Despite yesterday's dominant victory at Paul Ricard, Kevin Magnussen actually enters today's second Formula Renault 3.5 race with a reduced point lead after being excluded for a technical infraction.

At the finish of the race yesterday, the Danish McLaren Young Driver Development Program member had a 46-point lead, in other words he was just five points away from the title. Renault Sport scrutineers made a point of asking to check the flap of the DRS on car no. 20 post-race.

Logano's car fails postrace inspection
Joey Logano celebrated a victory Saturday—his fourth consecutive triumph in the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Dover International Speedway—but his win was slightly tainted by the front of his Penske Racing car being too low in postrace inspection.

NASCAR typically issues a six-point penalty for such a violation and does not change the finishing order, i.e. cheaters prosper in NASCAR. Only under extreme circumstances does it strip a win from a driver for what would need to be a much more egregious technical violations.

Hamlin trying new treatment to avoid back surgery
Denny Hamlin is trying a new treatment on his injured back in an effort to avoid offseason surgery. Painkiller injections in his spine the past two weeks have helped, but he won't know until the season ends if he's made enough progress to skip surgery.

"These last two weeks, I've gotten some treatment done, and I've felt as good as I did before the accident," he said. "Now, the 10 races before that, I felt horrible. I had to get out of the car at Richmond during practice because I just couldn't handle it anymore, and there's been several instances where it was really, really bad. But this is hopefully going to buy me enough time to get healthy. That's the problem, there's just not enough time in our schedule to recover fully from an injury."

Hamlin had persistent back trouble even before he suffered a compression fracture in a March accident that sidelined him for more than a month. With eight races left in the season, beginning Sunday at Dover, Hamlin said he needs time out of the car to rest and let his back heal. Associated Press

No Cup race at Road America in 2014
Wisconsin racing fans won't get the NASCAR Sprint Cup race they have craved and that had been rumored, at least not next year. As for NASCAR at Road America, Bruggenthies said the deal for the fifth running of the Nationwide Series in 2014 is all but done and he is confident it again will fall on the third weekend in June. Bruggenthies has made it no secret he'd like to bring NASCAR's premier division to Road America. Changes to the Sprint Cup Series are anticipated in 2015 to coincide with a new television contract, but the fact that the 2014 schedule hasn't been announced had led to speculation they could come sooner. That flared up again last week.

Feeling better days later, the Lotus driver concedes he won't be able to assess the pain or his fitness levels until he takes to the track in Korea.

F1's Rush called the 'best racing film ever made'
The Ron Howard-directed film "Rush" opens nationally this weekend, chronicling the '76 F1 season and the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda, played by Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl, respectively. THE DAILY offers a grouping of reviews of the movie. ROLLING STONE's Peter Travers writes the film "burns on a high flame of danger, sex and unexpected gravitas." Howard's "toughest hurdle might be the indifference of U.S. audiences" toward F1 (ROLLING STONE).

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY's Chris Nashawaty writes, "More than in any racing movie since 1966's 'Grand Prix,' the action scenes capture the daredevil kick of sitting in the cramped, claustrophobic cockpit of a Ferrari, zipping around hairpin turns as tires squeal and engines roar" (ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY).

Turbo gets it done for the Indy 500
Turbo the movie, a cartoon based around a snail and the Indy 500, may not have been a box office hit, but it certainly delivered exposure to the Indy 500, exposure it could not get anywhere else.

So far the movie has grossed over $173 million worldwide and has been seen by over 17 million people.  It is just now launching in the UK October 18th.

Some say the Hulman George family really only care about the Indy 500 and not the rest of the series.  This may explain why the Turbo movie gave zero exposure to the IndyCar series, just the Indy 500.  It may also explain why they don't care about growing the series (hence sticking with miniscule TV ratings on NBC Sports Network) as long as the Indy 500 is on ABC.  For them, the Indy 500 is everything.

Lack of money sees Peter Dempsey lose Indy Lights ride
Peter Dempsey
Peter Dempsey has been left without a drive for the final two Firestone Indy Lights races of the season following the Belardi team's withdrawal due to a lack of funds.

"It's very disappointing to not be in a position to finish out the championship with Belardi Auto Racing," said Dempsey. "However, I do fully understand the unfortunate reasons for their decision. Motorsport is an expensive sport and things like this happen all the time.

"I've really enjoyed the last year with the team. [Team owner] Brian [Belardi] gave me the biggest opportunity anyone has ever given me, and that's something I will never forget."

"[Belardi and I] had a lot of success, winning the Freedom 100 [at Indianapolis] and achieving multiple podiums," Dempsey said.

"I worked as hard as I could for the team and brought them the best season they've had in the series, and I'm very proud to be a part of that. I now feel that I am more prepared than ever for IndyCar."

Here's how producer Neal Edelstein, who's working with NASCAR Vice President Zane Stoddard on the project, described in broad terms what he termed the "underdog story:"

And his father's death ... pushed him out of the sport and he's a bit of a loner now, kind of on the fringes, [doing] dirt-bike riding, doing odd jobs involving racing and testing and motorcycles.

Longtime Ferrari Chief Luca Di Montezemolo Has Mellowed At Age 66
Luca Di Montezemolo
For the past 22 years, a third of the company's history, Ferrari SpA "has been in the hands" of Chair LUCA CORDERO DI MONTEZEMOLO, according to Joshua Robinson of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. A "successful, outspoken businessman," he is "about as close as you can get to Italian royalty these days." Montezemolo, after all, was appointed Ferrari's sporting director in '74 by ENZO FERRARI himself. He "isn't quite as obsessed as he was."

There was a time, he said, where he could only think, "If Ferrari comes second, it's a disaster. It's a disaster! We are obliged to win." At 66, "he is mellower." Although that is "not to say he isn't involved with the sporting side." Earlier this season, he gave driver FERNANDO ALONSO "a public dressing-down for criticizing the car." Montezemolo sat down with The Wall Street Journal to "discuss Ferrari's legacy of Formula One racing."

Lotus Puts Team Finances Before Finding Replacement Driver
Lotus has said that it "will put driver decisions on hold" while it sorts out the F1 team's "finances for next season," according to Alan Baldwin of REUTERS. Team Principal Eric Boullier said that "finalizing a deal with new investors was more of a priority than hiring a replacement" for '07 world champion Kimi Raikkonen.

Boullier: "I want to close this (deal), because it is important for the team. It will give it the financial stability for more than five years and it will give us also two steps forward in terms of revenue. After that, we can then think about the drivers for next year -- but also for 2015, 2016, and 2017." Lotus announced in June that a consortium of private investors, including an American hedge fund manager and an Abu Dhabi-based multinational business group, "had acquired a 35 percent stake." However, the deal "has yet to be finalized." Reuters

Mansell: Those were exceptional times
[Editor's Note: Note what Mansell says in the last two paragraphs.  Just a reminder what Tony George destroyed by starting the IRL. Instead of figuring out a way to chip away at improving the greatest racing series in the USA, he set out to destroy it.  And destroy it he did.  It took many years, but he won, and in doing so destroyed the sport of IndyCar racing.  History must never forget this so that the same mistake isn't made again.]

A few weeks ago a reader asked our editor-in-chief Nigel Roebuck if it was true that Mario Andretti and Nigel Mansell didn’t like each other. The answer is, yes, it’s true. In fact, Andretti and Mansell could barely tolerate each other and endured a very icy relationship during their two years together as IndyCar team-mates at Newman/Haas in 1993 and ’94.

Nascar Sponsorships at Bargain Bin Prices
A pair of Nascar sponsors made big moves last week. Nationwide Insurance announced it would no longer be the title sponsor for NASCAR’s second-tier race series. And Napa Auto Parts severed a longstanding relationship with Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) after one of the team’s drivers deliberately spun his car at the end of a race to help a fellow Waltrip driver. Nationwide is not leaving Nascar, just shifting its spending to the top Spring Cup series. Napa says it will be evaluating its “position in motorsports.”

Both moves come at a turbulent time for Nascar, with major sponsors PepsiCo (PEP), Anheuser-Busch (BUD), and UPS (UPS)pumping the brakes, while Quicken Loans, Farmers Insurance, (ZURN:VX), and Time Warner Cable (TWC) hit the gas.

Racing sponsors now at a crossroads of performance, ratings and ethics
The last several weeks have seen sponsor stories take over from on-track ones as the dominant players in the North American racing news.

NAPA, of course, has made the biggest announcement with its decision to leave Michael Waltrip Racing at the end of the year, in the wake of the controversy at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular season finale at Richmond. 5-Hour Energy, additionally, seems displeased with the action the organization has taken in a statement it has released.

Tesla Model S accused of unintended acceleration
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration received a complaint on Tuesday for the unintended acceleration of a Tesla Model S. We haven't heard much of that term since the large Toyota recall in 2009. Before that it was with Audi in the 1980s.

According to the story relayed to NHTSA, the driver was going down a short driveway at about 5 mph with the brake consistently applied. The car suddenly accelerated, hitting a curb and ending up on a 4.5-foot retaining wall about a foot from the curb.

Jimmy John's Follows Harvick To Stewart-Haas With 12-Race Primary Sponsorship
Jimmy John’s signed a 12-race primary sponsorship deal with Stewart-Haas Racing that will allow it to extend its five-year association with driver Kevin Harvick. The sandwich franchise joins Anheuser-Busch and Outback as a primary sponsor of Harvick’s No. 4 car, and leaves SHR with just four available races to sell for next season. Jimmy John’s has sponsored Harvick since '09 when it signed a 10-race deal with his now-shuttered Nationwide Series team, Kevin Harvick Inc. The company has expanded from 825 franchises to more than 1,600 stores since then (Tripp Mickle, Staff Writer).

USA TODAY's Jeff Gluck writes because Harvick "wasn't allowed to campaign for his sponsors to leave" Richard Childress Racing and follow him to SHR, yesterday's news "was that much sweeter." Harvick: "It almost gives me a better feeling. It's very rewarding that we're able to move forward without having been able to be involved in those negotiations." USA TODAY

Hamilton: F1 can succeed in the USA
Hamilton won in Austin in 2012
Lewis Hamilton says he feels F1 can finally crack America on the back of the success of last season's United States Grand Prix.

Hamilton won the first race at the Circuit of the Americas last year and will now go into the 2013 running of the race in November seeking to defend his title.

The decision to compete at the new circuit in Texas came after the troubles faced by F1 while racing at Indianapolis and Hamilton said he felt there was now a chance for the sport to finally be accepted in the USA.

“I feel like it can grow,” the Mercedes man said. “The more I go to the States, the more I meet people who are crazy-passionate about it; in fact I'd say more people than we probably realize love the sport.

Tickets selling faster this year for IndyCar finale at Fontana
A year ago, much to the surprise of the IndyCar Series, more than 30,000 showed up for the inaugural MAVTV 500 on a hot September night at Auto Club Speedway, the season-finale.

“We were thrilled with the crowd, I’m glad it knocked everyone’s socks off,” said ACS president Gillian Zucker, who campaigned relentlessly for the open-wheel return after a seven-year absence. The race was won by Ed Carpenter while Ryan Hunter-Reay claimed the driving championship.

This year’s race, set for Oct. 19, is on track to produce an even better number.

Just Marketing signs deal with John Force Racing
Just Marketing International, a Zionsville-based motorsports marketing consultancy, this month signed a three-year deal to represent one of the biggest teams on the National Hot Rod Association circuit, John Force Racing.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

It’s the first time Force, which is headquartered in Brownsburg and also has operations in California, has hired an outside firm to hunt for sponsors. It’s also a departure for Just Marketing, which normally represents sponsors, not teams and drivers. In recent years, though, Just Marketing has signed deals to represent NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon and famed NASCAR engine builder and team owner Doug Yates.
