200 poles: Key pole position moments for Renault in F1

First Ever Renault Pole, Jean-Pierre Jabouille, South Africa 1979

Jabouille had been a key part of Renault’s F1 adventure form the very start, giving the car its debut at Silverstone in 1977. In 1978 the program stepped up a gear, and with the RS01 Jabouille qualified as high as third in Austria and Monza, two tracks where top speed played a major role. By 1979 Renault was ready for a full campaign with two cars as Rene Arnoux joined the line-up. In only the third race of the season in South Africa Jabouille earned Renault’s first pole, and the first ever for a turbo car, ahead of the Ferrari of Jody Scheckter. He retired from the race, held over two parts because of rain. In the course of the season he would take three more poles and secure the team’s first win on home ground in France. More ...

NASCAR backtracks on 2013 car  After the disastrous 2013-car Texas test last week, NASCAR has done a complete u-turn and given back all of the downforce they removed for next week's 2013-car Kansas test. Apparently, NASCAR has no clue what they're doing with the new cars and the various body styles.  If they don't get this right watch the in-fighting between manufacturers begin.

McLaren 'spy' fine tax deductable  McLaren have successfully argued in Britain that a 32-million-pound (now $50 million) fine they paid after a 2007 Ferrari spying controversy should be tax deductible. The fine was imposed by Formula One's governing body, the FIA, after a dossier of Ferrari data was found in the possession of the McLaren team's then-chief designer Mike Coughlan. McLaren argued that the fine was "connected" with their trade and should be exempt from corporation tax. McReynolds, Despain on Opportunities for Smith and Allmendinger This Weekend  Today’s announcement that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will sit out the next two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races after sustaining a concussion in a last-lap accident at Talladega Superspeedway set in motion a shuffling around of drivers Regan Smith and AJ Allmendinger.

Italians love anything fast and loud  A reader writes in regard to our IndyCar Italian Connection article, Quote “To be honest, I don't know. On the surface, at least, an IndyCar race at Mugello makes almost zero sense. After all, Italy is a Formula One (F1) mad country, and there is no Italian driver or Italian manufacturer (unless you count the Dallara chassis) currently competing in IndyCar.”

I went to Italy for the first time this year. I was on the support crew for a car on the prestigious Mille Miglia. 1000 miles of insane driving from Milan to Rome and back! I’ve enough there in 3 days of driving to get about 3 life time jail sentence if it was done here in the USA. I notice while I was there that Italian are great motorsport fans. Doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it’s loud and fast… and if there’s a little bit of red won’t hurt also.

But again, whatever RP wants, IndyCar gets! Surfers Paradise was by far the best race weekend on the Champ Car schedule… we all know what happened there.  Must be because RP's jet cannot fly that far.  Martin Nadeau

Toyota Recalls 7.5 Million Cars For Door Fires  Toyota is recalling 7.5 million cars worldwide, and 2.5 million in the U.S., over a faulty door switch that could result in car fires. It's the automaker's largest recall since the sudden acceleration recalls in 2009 and 2010.

The recall could indicate that other automakers will be facing similar pressures. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is also investigating Subaru and General Motors for similar complaints. Those automakers may share a common supplier for the door switch.

Toyota has weathered it's large recalls fairly well, increasing market share despite the quality concerns.
