Mercedes To Offer Formula One Driver Lewis Hamilton New Contract By End Of Year
Will Mercedes pay Hamilton at least half of what Vettel is reportedly getting from Ferrari?
Mercedes F1 Exec Dir Toto Wolff is to offer driver Lewis Hamilton "a new contract at the end of the year in a bid to keep him at the team beyond 2015," according to the PA. Hamilton’s current three-year deal expires after next season, with recent speculation suggesting Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso "is attempting to engineer his way into Mercedes as a replacement."

Wolff, though, "has made it clear he has no intention of looking at any driver other than Hamilton as partner to Nico Rosberg for 2016 and beyond." Addressing the future, and the possibility of recruiting Alonso, Wolff said, "We have a contract with both our drivers for 2015, and we want to continue with the current line-up. That is because these two boys are part of the success of the team, they know each other so well and they respect each other. The moment you get somebody else in that fight could be detrimental to the team’s performance. So our main priority is to continue with Lewis and Nico beyond 2015." PA

$80M per year Ferrari deal means Vettel will be paid more than Alonso and Hamilton combined
Vettel gets the last laugh. No wonder Alonso was reportedly slamming doors and cursing at Mattiacci in Russia after learning Ferrari will pay Vettel more than double what they were paying him.  Ouch.
Formula One is in for a big shakeup next season, as the only two multiple World Champions on the grid are kicking off a game of musical chairs. Just who will end up where has yet to be figured out, but the overwhelmingly prevailing wisdom has Sebastian Vettel, who has already announced his departure from Red Bull, inking a contract with Ferrari worth 150 million pounds sterling for three years – that works out to over $80 million per year.

If the reports are true, that would make Vettel the highest-salaried sportsman in the world. Compared to Vettel's rumored $80 million/year, soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo was paid $52 million last year and NFL quarterback Matt Ryan got $42 million, just ahead of soccer player Lionel Messi at $41.7 million. Boxer Floyd Mayweather was reportedly paid a whopping $100 million last year, but that's based on how many fights he fights and wins, putting him on a different earnings spectrum.

Those figures are also just for salaries, and do not include sponsorship and endorsement deals – and therein may lie part of the reason for Vettel's reportedly stratospheric salary. In addition to his salary from the Red Bull team with which he's won four World Championships, Vettel also pulls in a large retainer from Infiniti, which sponsors both the team and himself personally. In departing Red Bull, he'd undoubtedly have to sever the tie with Infiniti as well.

Journalist links GoPro camera to Schumacher's injuries, shares fall
GoPro Inc's shares fell as much as 16 percent on Monday after a French journalist suggested that Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher's injuries in a ski accident last year might have been caused by a wearable camera made by the company.

"The problem for Michael was not the hit, but the mounting of the GoPro camera that he had on his helmet that injured his brain," Jean-Louis Moncet told radio station Europe 1 over the weekend. (bit.ly/1w2LJD7)

Moncet was reported to have spoken to Schumacher's son, Mick, but the journalist denied this in a tweet later. (bit.ly/1qVLof5)

Pressure on some big name drivers at Talladega
Talladega, where the 'big one' can ruin your day
Since NASCAR announced its revamped Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup nine months ago, the one race that fans marked on their calendar with the highest of anticipation was Talladega Superspeedway's GEICO 500. Well, the wait is over – it's race week at NASCAR's Most Competitive and unpredictable track, and the emotional drama that awaits is an open-ended script that no one knows the ending.

With the GEICO 500, set for Sunday at 1 pm CT, being the final race of the Contender Round of the Chase in which four of the 12 drivers will be eliminated for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) title, there's plenty of storylines. The top headline, however, is that four of the favorites for the title are at the bottom of the standings, and possibly the only way for any of the quartet to move on to the next round will be by a victory in the GEICO 500 – which is an automatic berth into the Eliminator Round of eight.

Video: Tempers flare after Charlotte race (Update) UPDATE Brad Keselowski met with NASCAR after a cooling-off period. Matt Kenseth crew chief Jason Ratcliff went voluntarily to talk to NASCAR, and Kenseth crew member Jesse Sanders was summoned by officials.

It's not clear if Keselowski - or Hamlin or Kenseth - will be punished by NASCAR on Tuesday, the day penalties are traditionally issued. NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said the sanctioning body will review the final on-track laps, and everything that occurred on pit road and in the garage. NASCAR in May fined Marcos Ambrose and Casey Mears for fighting in the garage after a race at Richmond. Harvick was fined in 2011 for a pit-road confrontation with Kyle Busch in which NASCAR cited safety concerns of Busch using his car to push Harvick's car away. The next year, Kurt Busch was fined $50,000 for dangerous driving on pit road when he hit Ryan Newman's car during a confrontation.

Start Of NASCAR Chase Event Bumped Off ABC, ESPN
NASCAR said that it "was disappointed for its fans" after the start of last night's Sprint Cup Series Bank of America 500 was not televised on ABC. With the TCU-Baylor game running long on ABC, the first 25 laps of the race were shown online on ESPN3. ABC and ESPN "planned to move the race to ESPNEWS," but a Cavaliers-Heat preseason game went into OT.

NASCAR started the race "about seven minutes after the scheduled green flag." NASCAR in a statement said, "We do all we can with the networks to avoid delays when live sports run late."

An ESPN statement read in part, "We started the race on ESPN3, which is available to 95 million homes"  SportingNews.com

[Editor's Note: With NASCAR leaving for another network, does ABC/ESPN care about NASCAR as much now?  Probably not.]

Verstappen wins, Ocon is the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Champion
Verstappen (C) gets his 9th win of year, Fuoco (L) was 2nd and Ocon (R) was 3rd
Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing) claimed his ninth victory in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in an action-packed 30th race of the season. At the 4.909 kilometers long Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, the 17-year-old Dutchman won from Italian Antonio Fuoco (Prema Powerteam) and Esteban Ocon (Prema Powerteam). For 18-year-old Frenchman Ocon, who is backed by the Lotus Formula 1 team, third place was enough to win an early title in the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship. As a reward, he will do a test with a Ferrari Formula 1 car at the Fiorano circuit on October 29.

Antonio Fuoco already took the lead from Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon before the first corner. With a very good start, he thus managed to move up from third on the grid to first place. Later on the opening lap, Edward Jones (Carlin) ploughed through the gravel trap and hit Antonio Giovinazzi's (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) car as he swerved back onto the track. The Italian spun and retired and so did Jones. The race director sent the safety car out after the incident.

NASCAR Charlotte: Toyota Quote Board
With a fifth-place finish, Kyle Busch scored the best finish for Toyota-powered cars, in what was a difficult evening for the marque.
KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Doublemint Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 5th

What struggles did you face tonight?

"Anytime we were second and we thought we had a chance to win -- then we would come in the next time and go back out and we would be a 15th-place car.  These things are so finicky on pit stops -- it's been that way all year long for us.  I don't know what the heck is going on or what we're doing.  I saw the 22 (Joey Logano) car in my rear view mirror once all night and the rest of the times he wasn't even close enough to be in my rear view mirror and he beats us.  That's just the way the luck goes -- I guess they have plenty of luck on their side right now.  It's frustrating when you're running good enough that you should be able to challenge better for better finishes and we just can't."

What is your strategy for Talladega?

Odd couple win extraordinary Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000
Mostert and Morris
It can be plain weird, extraordinarily formidable and downright cruel. There were more twists, plots and sub-plots in living memory throughout one of the most extraordinary Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 races in history.

One of the youngest drivers in the field and one of the oldest won the race from dead last when arguably one of the greatest V8 Supercars drivers of all-time runs out of fuel in sight of his sixth Bathurst crown in the longest Bathurst 1000 in history.

Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris might be the oddest combination but they are now Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 winners.  They proved with a young, pure racer, a wise head and the tenacity to match they could crash and win.

Toyota teams have limited time to test new Camry
2015 Camry
Toyota unveiled its 2015 Sprint Cup Camry on Saturday with five weeks left in the 2014 season. That means the teams have five weeks to test. With a testing ban going into effect after Nov. 16's 2014 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Joe Gibbs Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing will experiment with the car. The 2015 car conforms with NASCAR's new lower horsepower, less downforce rules package.

"We'll be at Nashville and things like that," MWR driver Clint Bowyer said. "We have (Goodyear test at) Auto Club Speedway, we have a Phoenix test coming up. We've got opportunities to get in this race car. I really see the new rule package that NASCAR has implemented being a bigger change feel-wise for a driver than this new car. If you're going to unveil a new car, this is a perfect time to do that because it's basically start over from scratch across the board for everybody."

Gibbs says crew chief changes on hold
NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs told FOXSports.com Saturday that he his holding off on planned crew chief changes with his Sprint Cup team while his drivers battle for the championship and the team finalizes its NASCAR Nationwide Series sponsorship deals for next year. The hot rumor in the garage area is that #18-Kyle Busch's crew chief, Dave Rogers, will become JGR's competition director next year, with Adam Stevens moving to Busch's Cup car from the Nationwide Series. Likewise, Darian Grubb is thought to be in line to move from #11-Denny Hamlin's Cup car to the new fourth JGR Cup car with Carl Edwards for next year. But Gibbs said Saturday those plans are not final yet.

"Our biggest concern is, we want to do everything at once," said Gibbs. "We've got a lot up in the air on the Nationwide side, still. And so, I think as soon as we get that settled down, we can kind of make an announcement." Typically, major Sprint Cup primary sponsorship deals are three years or so in duration. But on the Nationwide side, the deals are usually only one year at a time, and often not wrapped up until late January or early February, right before the racing season starts. Fox Sports

Marco Sorensen sprints to maiden GP2 win
Stoffel Vandoorne (ART Grand Prix), Marco Sorensen (MP Motorsport), Felipe Nasr (Carlin)
Lotus F1 protege Marco Sorensen has claimed his and MP Motorsport's first GP2 win in today's sprint race at Sochi from pole position. The Dane remained in control throughout an eventful race to cross the finish line 0.6s ahead of McLaren test driver Stoffel Vandoorne. Williams F1 third driver Felipe Nasr charged to third place.

When the lights went out, Sorensen made a good start to keep the lead whilst Vandoorne stormed from fourth on the grid to run side-by-side with the Dane entering into turn 1. The Belgian out-braked himself and ran a bit too wide opening the door for Sergio Canamasas to move up to second place behind Sorensen. Further down the pack, newly crowned Champion Palmer was sandwiched between Andre Negrao and Raffaele Marciello. The maneuver ended in tears for the Brit who dropped to the back of the field.

Jolyon Palmer reflects on a championship season
Jolyon Palmer earlier this season at Barcelona.
GP2 Series: Jolyon Palmer, tenth GP2 Series Champion. How does that sound?

Jolyon Palmer: It sounds incredible. It was obviously what we were aiming for from the start of this year and I think we’ve just done a really good job, myself and the DAMS team. We fought for every pole and every feature race win. We barely made any mistake. It’s been an absolute dream season and to be Champion at the earliest opportunity for me is the icing on the cake.

GP2 Series: When did you feel that this was going to be your year?

Jolyon Palmer: That happened probably after Abu Dhabi last year. We had such a strong end to the year with two wins and nearly a third one at Yas Marina as well. And then, we tested with DAMS and they were very keen to sign me for the year. We went for that option and straight away, on the first day with the team, I realised that the hunger was there for them as well. Going to a new team, you never know how that’s going to pan out. The first day of testing in Abu Dhabi, we topped and from there we never looked back really. We took the first pole in Bahrain and we took a win that weekend as well. I’ve gotten so well with the team. They’ve done a really good job all year. The mechanics, the engineers… I think the only mistake all year was Monza qualifying. Even so, that weekend turned out great as well. I love working with the team and together we’ve done a very good job.

Nationwide Charlotte: Toyota Quote board
Kyle Busch
KYLE BUSCH, No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position:  2nd

Was the difference the time it took you to get to the front?

"No. They were faster than us tonight.  Just knew that with about 60 (laps) to go that we had a tire advantage over them and that was going to be the way for us to win the race.  But, bizarre debris cautions always ruin those things for you.  It's a shame.  I don't feel bad for us and the team.  I feel bad for the Breast Cancer Champions that were here with us tonight.  Just to give them a little more something to celebrate in their life.  And weren't able to do it."

Do you expect tires to be an issue in tomorrow night's race?

"I don't know -- I think it can be just as much of an issue tomorrow.  I think Cup cars tend to be harder on tires than Nationwide cars do because they're faster down the straightaway, they land harder in the corners and what not.  We had issues tonight, we had some unraveling problems.  There towards the end of one of the runs I felt like the right-front was really starting to give up again and start sliding across the race track there so I had to move to the top.  It lends itself to a little bit of good racing.  If you do abuse them too much then you're going to go backwards.  I feel like that can be what happens tomorrow as well too.  We saw a little bit of that in some final practice stuff where guys that ran real hard early, they seem to fall off a lot more than guys that couldn't post a fast time, but could keep their cars going more consistent."

Alex Lynn in contention to succeed Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso
Alex Lynn has emerged as a strong contender to replace Red Bull-bound Daniil Kvyat and partner Max Verstappen at Toro Rosso in 2015.

The 21-year-old joined the Red Bull junior team this year after boldly emailing Dr Helmut Marko ahead of the 2013 Macau GP and telling the Austrian that he would win the prestigious F3 and wanted to be part of the driver program.

Lynn is on the verge of the GP3 title and feels he is ready to follow in the footsteps of 2013 champion Kvyat and bypass GP2 straight into F1.

Dovizioso on pole for Motul Grand Prix of Japan
Andrea Dovizioso and his Ducati Team both secured their first pole positions since 2010 at the Motul Grand Prix of Japan.

The weekend started well for the Italian rider, who was able to set solid and competitive times on both the soft and medium compound tires. The confidence from this carried over to Q2.

Qualifying started with Dovizioso attempting to get a tow from Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda), but the Championship leader ran on. Dovizioso then went about his first run on his own setting a solid banker time and coming in for a new set of soft tires.

Lewis Hamilton
Mercedes power continues to rule F1 in 2014. In final practice for the Russian GP Saturday morning if you did not have a Mercedes power unit behind you, then you were at least 1-second off the pace.

Lewis Hamilton again set the pace over his teammate Nico Rosberg by 0.290 seconds.

Valtteri Bottas in his Mercedes powered Williams was third, followed by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and the second Williams of Felipe Massa.
