Once again NASCAR last to the table on safety
Once again it took losing their biggest star for NASCAR to react
IndyCar, F1 and other series have done concussion baseline testing for years.  They implemented the HANS Device way ahead of NASCAR as well.  It wasn't until the death of Dale Earnhardt and Adam Petty that it finally get mandated. Experts say the HANS Device would have likely saved both drivers.

So here we are again and it wasn't until their biggest star (Dale Jr.) got taken out by a concussion did the giant awaken and say, oh maybe we had better do something about this.

NASCAR is reviewing with its medical experts all aspects of how it deals with concussions, including baseline testing that the IndyCar Series and other contact sports use.

For former Sprint Cup driver Steve Park, it can't come soon enough.

Park suffered a massive brain injury in a 2001 Nationwide Series crash at Darlington. He took the ImPACT baseline test in 2003 on the recommendation of NASCAR physician Dr. Jerry Petty after suffering a second concussion. More ...

Karam Quickest in Star Mazda Tuesday Practice
Sage Tuesday
Connor De Phillippi, who won this race in 2010 was quick in the first of today's two Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear sessions, turning a 1:20.882 in his #2 Juncos Racing / ModSpace Racing / One24 Mazda.  In the afternoon, it was Sage Karam, a three race winner in the #88 Andretti Autosport / Comfort Revolution Mazda and currently 4th in the championship who turned the quick time of 1:19.352.  Both are still well shy of the 1:18.328 set by Peter Dempsey in 2008... but there's still plenty of time to find that elusive tick of the stopwatch.  In both sessions, it was Gabby Chaves, second in the championship and winner of Race 2 at Mazda Raceway two weeks ago, who turned the quick time in the #19 JDC Motorsports / CLARO / Marca Colombia / Tecpro  Mazda; 1:20.882 in the morning and 1:19.447 in the afternoon.  More ...

F1 Teams Win Concession From FIA And Ecclestone  F1 teams have "won an important concession over the future governance of the sport" ahead of next week's meeting with the motorsports governing body FIA and F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone, according to Jonathan Noble of AUTOSPORT.com. The FIA and Ecclestone have "backed away from plans to limit an influence over the rule making process to just the six top teams, which had been singled out as an important issue."

FIA President Jean Todt heard from seven teams “voicing their worries about possible changes to the way the sport is run." Other concerns, which cannot be addressed prior to the meeting, "include a dramatic hike in entry fees and a demand that the FIA gets tougher in controlling costs." Ecclestone had originally "been keen to revise the F1 Commission to an 18-man body" made up of six team representatives -- six FIA members and six members from F1 Management. The future governance structure will be revised after "concerns about the situation were raised from several quarters."

A new version of the F1 Commission, which will include representatives of all the teams, will "remain in place as the final body to approve or reject rule changes before they are submitted to the FIA." AUTOSPORT.com

DTM and Japanese Super GT join forces  From 2014, DTM will be heading in a new direction. Thanks to a cooperation deal signed this Tuesday in Tokyo, the most popular international touring-car series is not only open for the Japanese car manufacturers but at the same time, the three premium-car manufacturers involved in DTM, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, also will have the opportunity to compete in the Japanese Super GT. The agreement regarding the use of the ‘New DTM’ regulations by Japan’s Super GT begins in 2014 and runs – for the time being – for four years.

“This is a very special day for all those involved but in addition, it also has got outstanding significance for the entire motor racing world. This unique cooperation was made possible by the right parties getting involved at the perfect point in time,” said Hans Werner Aufrecht, Chairman of DTM rights holder and promoter ITR e.V., on the occasion of the signing of the contract with the Japanese Series organizer, GT Association (GTA), in Tokyo. GM bailout money now flowing overseas  Before the bailout of General Motors, it was well understood that the world’s largest automaker was losing huge amounts of money in the US and was staying afloat thanks to stronger performance in overseas markets. Since the bailout, however, that dynamic has been turned on its head. Thanks to a leaner manufacturing footprint, debt eliminations and steadily recovering sales, GM’s US operations have generated the lion’s share of the company’s profit since the bailout. And now, as the rest of the world economy slows, GM is spending more and more of its taxpayer-enhanced cash pile to shore up its faltering foreign divisions. In fact, according to an analysis of GM’s SEC filings, the company is likely to incur over $6.5 billion in losses and expenditures overseas in the 2011-2014 period, not counting over $1.6b in foreign potential legal liabilities or several other incalculable expenses that could add up to billions more. Not only are these expenses a challenge to GM’s overall financial health at a time when it also faces billion-dollar expenditures on pensions in the US, it shows the basic problem with national bailouts of global companies. Taxpayers who were told they were saving an American company are now seeing their tax dollars flowing overseas by the billions. More ...

Toyota Hybrid defeats Audi Hybrid at home
The Toyota Hybrid at Fuji
Dusk was starting to fall over Fuji Speedway as Toyota Racing’s Kazuki Nakajima took the checkered flag in front of a grandstand wholly given over to the Japanese manufacturer.  The clouds gathered little by little over the mountain peaks which surround the track but they didn’t discourage the 32,000-strong crowd (50,000 over the three days) which came to cheer on Toyota’s triumph, plus that of Nissan in the LMP2 class.  The 6 Hours of Fuji will no doubt linger in Japanese fans’ memories for some time, the event having received a very warm welcome!

While Audi has already wrapped up the Constructors’ title, Toyota could be relied on to take the fight to the Four Rings in this latter part of the season.  After its first victory in the 6 Hours of São Paulo, the No.7 TS030 Hybrid shone on home ground thanks to Nicolas Lapierre, Alex Wurz and Kazuki Nakajima who were fast on each of the three days of the event.  The Japanese manufacturer took its second win in only its fifth race, an enviable statistic especially as the successes were achieved against a far more experienced adversary.
