Dale Jr. Candid on NASCAR Countdown (Sunday, 1 p.m. ESPN)
The son of a legend and NASCAR's most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has enjoyed a resurgence in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this year. In a visit to the remains of a North Carolina dirt track where his father and grandfather were stars, the normally guarded Earnhardt opens up like never before with ESPN's Marty Smith on a variety of topics, including his career, maturity and family name.

"I look at myself back then and I'm like, 'What were you thinking?' And yeah, you know, it's amazing we won what we did. And I had a lot of talent but I didn't get it out of the car. I just rested on my legacy and last name." – Dale Earnhardt Jr.

"My own mood's based off of how I perform. My family's important to me, but not as important as my performance, and if that's wrong, it's wrong but right now, my performance drives everything in my life – everything." – Dale Earnhardt Jr.

New chairman ready to 'kick some ass' with Ferrari
New Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne claims the marque is ready to 'kick some ass' and take risks in order to return to the front in Formula One. In taking over from former chairman Luca Di Montezemolo this week, Marchionne has come out all guns blazing and made clear Ferrari's continued lack of success is unacceptable.

The current campaign is the sixth in succession for Ferrari without a trophy to show for their efforts and considerable spend. The day after Di Montezemolo confirmed star driver Fernando Alonso would be leaving Ferrari at the end of this season, Marchionne is ready to get tough. "We've got to kick some ass and we've got to do it quickly," said Marchionne, speaking to Autocar. "It takes what it takes. We might screw up, but we've got nothing to lose, right? Let's risk something.'"

Massa slams Pirelli's tire choice for Brazil (Update) UPDATE
Massa slammed Pirelli over tire choice for Brazil
Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery admits they could alter their tire selection for the Brazilian GP, but says it has nothing to do with Felipe Massa's complaints.

The Italian manufacturer has revealed that they will use the hard and medium compounds at this year's Brazilian race on November 9 as the "energy demands are high" at Interlagos.

However, Massa has expressed his outrage at the selection describing it as "dangerous, very dangerous".

"First of all, Interlagos was never a track to use medium and hard. It's a track that we can use even super-soft and soft, but in a conservative way soft and medium," the Brazilian said.

2015 NASCAR team sponsorships coming together
Some top NASCAR Sprint Cup teams have sold their primary sponsorships for all of next season, but space remains on the cars of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards and Clint Bowyer four months before the 2015 season begins. Among the teams that have sold all their primary sponsorship for next year are Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin.

"It's certainly not easy finding a sponsor, but there was an abundant amount of interest in our sport and in our team," said Dave Alpern, chief marketing officer at Joe Gibbs Racing, which expands to four cars next season.

Steve Newmark, president of Roush Fenway Racing, says that the three-car organization has fewer primary sponsorship openings then it did at this time a year ago.

Indy 500 practice and qualifying changes introduced
IndyCar has added an additional practice day and modified the new qualifying system for this year's Indianapolis 500.

Under the new qualifying format, which was announced last month, entries essentially secure their place on the grid on Saturday, May 17 and then determine the actual starting order the following day.

The amended rule allows a competitor who 'suffers a hardship' at the conclusion of the Saturday to make the field on Sunday, although they would start from the rear of the grid.

Mercedes afraid of equal competition
Mercedes, not up for an open fight, knowing they will probably lose
[Editor's Note: When the rules were open and everyone had a chance to up their game to win, Mercedes got beat over and over and over. Now that they found an advantage they don't want to give the other manufacturers a chance to up their game because they know they will probably get beat over and over and over again. So with the rules now frozen (lucky for Mercedes isn't it?)] Mercedes plans to block an attempt by F1 rivals "to relax the rules and allow engine development during the course of next season," according to Alan Baldwin of REUTERS.

The engine rules "are currently 'frozen' in-season to keep costs down after the introduction of costly new V6 turbo hybrid power units this year." Renault-powered rivals Red Bull, "dethroned by Mercedes" as constructors' champions last weekend, and Ferrari "want the rules relaxed to allow in-season development that might give them a chance to close the gap." Mercedes F1 Exec Dir Toto Wolff said that "his team had already voted against the proposal" and would do so again when the matter goes to an F1 commission meeting. Wolff: "I don't think we will change our mind in the next month, whenever the commission meeting is going to take place." Reuters

Former Indy car driver Randy Lanier issues statement following release from prison
Randy Lanier, the 1986 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, was released from prison on Wednesday. Lanier, 60, had been incarcerated for 27 years and was serving life without parole for marijuana trafficking.

The U.S. government issued his release from Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Coleman, Fla., but details surrounding his release and the motion to reduce his sentence are now sealed court documents and unavailable to the media.

The former IMSA GTP sports-car champion and IndyCar driver, who bankrolled his career with illegal drug proceeds, will spend the next six months in a halfway house. It is all part of a strict three-year supervised release program designed to ease his re-entry into society. Any violations of the terms of release could land Lanier back in prison.

Nine drivers have delivered wins for the Woods on superspeedways with NASCAR Hall of Fame member David Pearson accounting for half of them.

Another Hall of Famer, Cale Yarborough has six superspeedway victories for the Wood Brothers. A.J. Foyt has four and Neil Bonnett three. However, the anticipated massive bump in attendance didn't come, despite a high level of promotion in the market and additional foot traffic that saw the ABC Supply Co. Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by the Metro Milwaukee Honda Dealers advertised at State Fair.

Herta gets it - team should find sponsor and hire best driver
Bryan Herta gets it
While many open wheel racing teams are infected with the ride-buyer cancer that is destroying the sport, Bryan Herta is one team owner who understands that the team needs to find the funding it needs and then go out and hire a driver based on talent, not on how large his checkbook is.

After he and partner Steve Newey went their separate ways a few weeks ago, the rumors started that Bryan Herta Autosport was going out of business. When RACER's Marshall Pruett reported Jack Hawksworth was headed to A.J. Foyt, people were convinced the little squad that stole the 2011 Indianapolis 500 with Dan Wheldon was history.

Not so says the former CART winner. If things go according to plan, Herta will have two cars in the Indianapolis 500, a full-time Global Rallycross operation and a son racing across The Pond.

Since it began accepting claims on Aug. 1, the program has received a total of 1,371 claims for deaths and injuries, according to the report by the office of Kenneth Feinberg, who GM has tapped to run the program. The report listed all of the claims received and approved as of Friday.

GM has faced criticism this year for waiting 11 years to begin recalling millions of cars with ignition-switch problems that were linked to fatalities.

Ford V8 Supercars Drivers Mostert, Morris Say Leaving Sport Would Be 'Commercial Suicide'
Ford V8 drivers and Bathurst 1000 winners Chaz Mostert and Paul Morris "reckon it makes no sense and would be commercial suicide for Ford to exit" V8 Supercars, according to the AAP. Reports emerged last Friday that Ford was "planning to leave the sport" when its sponsorship deal with Ford Performance Racing expired at the end of this year.

Morris said, "You saw the outcry of emotion and the passion for the brand yesterday and if Ford don't get involved it's going to be commercial suicide." Mostert, who won the race at "just his second attempt, was equally emphatic," saying, "It's a fantastic brand and our Supercars series has been built on the Ford-Holden Rivalry over the years. So for them to go, it just makes no sense and I think it might kill the sport a bit." AAP

Baltimore GP was doomed by scheduling conflicts
Big crowds be damned, IndyCar could not find a way to make Baltimore work.  However, they could find a way to embarrass themselves in front of empty grandstands at Fontana
The IndyCar Series wanted to continue coming to Baltimore but couldn't deal with annual uncertainty over dates for the race, said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., which owns IndyCar. The event was held on Labor Day weekend in 2011 through 2013, but that conflicted this year with a Navy football game at M&T Bank Stadium. The race course ran through downtown near the Ravens and Orioles stadiums, making it always subject to scheduling conflicts.

"Think about what it means if one year it's Labor Day weekend and the next year they are the week before that," Miles told Foxsports.com. "It's not just about them, because somebody else also has to switch. What if they are two weeks before Labor Day? Now, it's musical chairs being played among three races. … We just don't think that's the way to make the schedule. … That is the reason why we have parted company." Maryland Daily Record

IndyCar schedule planning seeks to protect territories
As Hulman & Company CEO Mark Miles continues to finalize the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule for the end of this month, it has created a lot of debate among fans who would like to see the series return to some past venues.

Such tracks as Road America, WI; Chicagoland Speedway in IL; Phoenix International Raceway, Michigan International Speedway, Laguna-Seca Raceway in Monterey, Calif. and even the spectacular Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin are popular choices.

Miles has heard those endorsements but explained to FOXSports.com that, while those are all fine racing venues, they may not make sense to add to the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule.

World Championship celebrations at Brackley and Brixworth
The team of people that made Mercedes F1 into a winner form the Mercedes logo.  The only person missing, who made it all possible, was Ross Brawn
The past two days have seen celebrations at Brackley and Brixworth as the team commemorated the first ever FIA Formula 1 World Constructors Championship title for Mercedes-Benz in a landmark year for the marque. 60 years have passed since the three-pointed star took victory in its first ever Formula One Grand Prix in Reims, and 80 years since the Silver Arrows were born at the 1934 Eifelrennen. In the year that Mercedes-Benz has celebrated 120 years of motorsport achievement, the 2014 campaign stands as a fitting tribute to the impeccable standards of success established in years gone by.

With 13 wins, 35 podium finishes, 16 pole positions and 14 fastest laps from 16 races, the Mercedes-Benz PU106A Hybrid Power Unit has taken 64% of all available World Championship points thus far in 2014, leading 88% of racing laps in the process. Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz F1 W05 Hybrid has taken 34% of points available, leading 85% of racing laps.

Red Bull blocks Vettel Ferrari test
Ferrari's soon-to-be-announced $80 million per year man will have to wait to test for the Scuderia until February
Sebastian Vettel has branded the rule that makes it likely that he will sit out qualifying at the US Grand Prix on Saturday week as "completely stupid", while Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz has also confirmed that the world champion will not be released to drive for Ferrari at the Abu Dhabi test on November 28th.

Vettel has used up his full annual allocation of five power units and will need to fit a new motor for qualifying in Austin.

It means that F1 fans in the USA at Austin on the Saturday will not see the reigning world champion during the qualifying session. He argues he is likely to have to start from the pit lane, so there is no reason to go out in any of the three sessions and put mileage on the engine.

Zanardi completes Ironman event (Update) UPDATE
Added photos of Alex Zanardi. He beat 1,915 other competitors that had legs.  Incredible feat by an incredible man.

10/13/14 Two-time CART champion and ex-Formula 1 driver Alex Zanardi added to his wide-ranging list of sporting achievements by completing the famous Ironman World Championship triathlon in Hawaii last weekend.

Zanardi lost both his legs in a CART accident at the Lausitzring in 2001, but recovered to return the track in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and win Paralympic gold at the London 2012 games in handcycling.

The Italian ranked 272nd out of 2,187 finishers at the Kailua-Kona event on October 11, which began with a 2.4-mile swim, before moving on to a 112-mile bicycle ride and concluding with a 26.2-mile marathon run.

Zanardi used a wet vest to keep his body floating for the swim, his self-developed handcycle for the biking section and an Olympic wheelchair for the marathon. He finished in nine hours, 47 minutes and 14 seconds.

Maserati wants to add 20 U.S. dealerships by year end
The global head of Maserati wants the Italian luxury brand to add 20 dealerships in the U.S. by year end.

Speaking to Automotive News at the Paris auto show, Harald Wester said the U.S. is Maserati's "most important market" to reach its ambitious global sales goals.

Ocon beat Verstappen, but Verstappen got the F1 ride
Esteban Ocon (above)beat Max Verstappen in the F3 title bout, but Verstappen got a full-time F1 ride and Ocon only got this silly test in a 2-year old car.
Lotus F1 Team Junior driver Esteban Ocon will test a two-year old Lotus F1 Team E20 as part of his ongoing development program and as a reward for winning the FIA Formula 3 Championship in his rookie season.

Eighteen year-old Frenchman Ocon – who has been part of the Lotus F1 Team Junior program since 2010 – took an unassailable lead in the championship standings this past weekend in Imola meaning the title is his with three races yet to run.

Over the course of his season to date with Italian squad Prema Powerteam, Ocon has achieved nine wins and twenty-one podiums. He currently has 454 points with nearest rival, Max Verstappen, on 368. Ocon has also secured the Rookie title, currently with 558 points to Verstappen's 448.

ABC/ESPN kicking NASCAR to the curb early
NBC reportedly bid over 50% more than ESPN for the 2nd half of the NASCAR season for the next 10-year, despite ESPN expressing interest about continuing their relationship with NASCAR. So with ABC/ESPN out of NASCAR for 10-years, do they care anymore?
NASCAR's media partners in Bristol, Conn. did it again Monday, continuing the season-long process of scraping the sport off their collective shoe.

In the aftermath of a post-race imbroglio at Charlotte Motor Speedway Saturday night that saw a number of drivers play Demolition Derby on pit road before a widespread bout of pushing, shoving and questioning of parentage, ESPN and its parent company, ABC, once again plumbed new depths in yellow journalism. Utilizing a team of reporters who wouldn't know a panhard bar from a tiki bar, ABC's Good Morning America variously misrepresented the incident as a "brawl," an "epic brawl" and a "chain reaction rumble," despite the fact that nary a punch was thrown.

"Now to the brawl on a NASCAR race track," said GMS anchor Robin Roberts, by way of introduction. "Some of the sport's top drivers were involved, including Tony Stewart; his first incident since that deadly accident over the summer."
