Bayne earns 16th starting spot
Trevor Bayne
The new format for knock-out qualifying at Talladega Superspeedway made for some anxious moments, but in the end, Trevor Bayne and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team wound up with a solid 16th-place starting spot for Sunday’s GEICO 500.

In the opening round of qualifying, Bayne was part of the second group of cars to run against the clock, and the group didn’t leave pit road until more than half of the five-minute session had elapsed.

That meant little time for error as Bayne, crew chief Donnie Wingo and spotter Chip Ross had to decide just when to go so Bayne could catch the draft just right and get a speed that would put them in the starting field.

For team co-owner Eddie Wood and the rest of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team on pit road, the anxiety level was about as high as it gets.

NASCAR Talladega Qualifying: Toyota quote board
Former Talladega winner Brian Vickers captured pole in a bizarre qualifying session.
BRIAN VICKERS, No. 55 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Michael Waltrip Racing
Starting Position: 1st

Were you surprised to end up with the pole in this format?

"It's crazy.  I thought that coming to three (laps) to go that we had literally no shot.  We were way back -- like a half a straightaway behind the whole field and they all checked up and gave me a chance and gave me a run.  I really get no credit for it.  I just tried not to wreck.  Billy (Scott, crew chief) and all the guys did a great job with the car and Billy had a strategy and a plan -- we stuck to it even when I thought we were crazy and we were going to be in trouble we stuck to his plan.  My spotter did a great job on top of the tower and we found some speed.  This Aaron's Dream Machine was quick and we have a new car here for this speedway race -- the Camry is running good."

What does it mean to earn the pole for this race at Talladega?

Timothy Peters holds on for victory in fred's 250 Camping World Truck Series race
TALLADEGA, AL – Timothy Peters said the frenetic final two laps of Saturday's Camping World Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway was "system overload." But as all sorts of chaos was breaking out behind him, Peters remained calm and never short-circuited.

Peters held off a host of challengers on the final lap to win the fred's 250 Powered by Coca-Cola. It was his first victory of the season and his first career win at Talladega Superspeedway.

Peters was the leader of a 17-truck pack that raced three-wide during most of the final two laps and occasionally went four-wide. Several drivers attempted to make moves to pass Peters, but the Red Horse Racing driver managed to hang on to the lead.

Charlie Kimball married Kathleen Thompson in September
Kimball and his new wife, Kathleen Thompson
Charlie Kimball had a crush on Kathleen Thompson when they met 14 years ago as sophomores at Rio Mesa High School in Oxnard, Calif., but they were traveling at different speeds and clearly heading in opposite directions.

"We were two different people," said Ms. Thompson, 28, a founder and an owner of Porch Light Public Relations in Indianapolis.

"I wasn't the most grounded child," she said, "and Charlie, though he was sweet, was a very conservative and nerdy kind of guy who was into go-karts and wore a Stanford sweatshirt to school every day because that's where he wanted to go to college."

Though Mr. Kimball and Ms. Thompson shared many classes, played on the tennis team together and had mutual friends, the idea of the two of them ever dating was as much a dream to him as racing in the Indianapolis 500.

Andretti: Vettel can return Ferrari to the front
Mario Andretti
Former F1 World Champion Mario Andretti believes that Sebastian Vettel has what it takes to galvanize Ferrari and end the team's title drought when he makes the switch from Red Bull after the 2014 campaign.

Although his move has not been announced, Red Bull chiefs have clarified that Vettel is on his way to Ferrari, with Fernando Alonso's departure since being confirmed by former company President Luca di Montezemolo.

Ferrari is searching for its first Formula 1 crown since 2008, but Andretti, who himself competed for the Italian outfit in the top echelon, reckons four-time title winner Vettel could be the man to spark a new era of success.

"Sebastian will fare very well no matter where he goes. He probably just needs a new challenge, to perhaps be appreciated in a new way. I'm sure he will be when he goes to Ferrari," the 1978 Champion told GPUpdate.net.

Two changes could have major impact on IndyCar Series
Closed canopies
In the coming years, the IndyCar race car could look dramatically different than the current model—which was rolled out in 2012.

Photos surfaced on the Internet Tuesday of Chevy’s aero kit test session at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas. The look of the aero kit could—and likely will—change before the formula is finalized in mid January.

For the gearheads among us, the changes the body kits bring will be significant. I’m not sure casual fans will notice a huge difference. The body kits should, however, bring an element of innovation to the series and allow another avenue for Honda and Chevy teams to look for an edge. And that should bring some intrigue to the series.

Toyota NCTWS Talladega Notes and Quotes: Darrell Wallace Jr.
Darrell Wallace Jr.
DARRELL WALLACE JR., No. 54 Toyota Care Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

How was the practice session this morning?

"This and Daytona are probably the only two tracks where we don't worry about where we're at on the speed charts.  Had some issues early on in practice that kept us from getting out in the big pack draft.  We're good enough for I believe 22nd or so -- nothing to worry about.  We did get some practice time though and feel like our Toyota Care Tundra was good.  We worked on little stuff to get us where we need to be and I think we're right there.  Next thing is just trying to figure out this qualifying deal and I'm still kind of up in the air about it.  I don't know what we're doing, I just know that it's going to be crazy."

What is the plan for qualifying this afternoon?

Prost says atmosphere at Mercedes has changed
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg battle at Spa.
Four-time champion Alain Prost believes the team dynamic at Mercedes has changed since Nico Rosberg collided with Lewis Hamilton at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Hamilton has taken four consecutive victories since the collision and built a 17-point lead over his team-mate in the championship with three races remaining.

During his career, Prost was involved in head-to-head title battles with team-mates Niki Lauda and Ayrton Senna while at McLaren and admits team principal Ron Dennis occasionally backed one driver over the other.

"Ron was very strong, but he has always shown a small preference," Prost said. "I had the advantage at one stage - but you do not realise exactly when you have it - when I was with Niki. But then when I was with Ayrton we had a thing and he [Dennis] always showed a little thing [for Ayrton]. Not the team but Dennis himself."

Massa slams Pirelli's tire choice for Brazil (Update 2 - Pirelli announces change)
After reviewing their original tire selections, Pirelli has opted to bring the soft and medium compounds to the Brazilian Grand Prix.
After a meeting of the Tyre Working Group, the tyre nomination for the Brazilian Grand Prix (November 6-9) has been changed, following Pirelli's proposal and with the unanimous agreement of all the teams.

Although the hard and medium nomination has been used in Brazil for the last two years, the recent resurfacing of the Interlagos track has prompted the change to medium and soft. This new choice is the same nomination as the United States Grand Prix the weekend before.

Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery said: "We've always said that we would be open to any changes if they were required. After further technical analysis of the impact of the revised circuit surface, together with a risk assessment suggesting a low probability of compound overheating due to extreme track temperatures, we have made this change with the unanimous agreement of all 11 teams."
