Chase Elliott is taking over the No. 24 car from Jeff Gordon
NASCAR driver Chase Elliott last night unveiled the paint scheme for the No. 24 NAPA-sponsored Sprint Cup car he will drive in '16, saying the auto parts company "let me make a few decisions, which was really cool." Elliott showed off the car on FS1's "NASCAR Race Hub" and said of NAPA, "They were really open and willing to some of the ideas we had. The light blue stripes actually came off of their drag car that Ron Capps runs, so kind of cool to keep it all in the family."

Hendrick Motorsports Owner Rick Hendrick had not seen the paint scheme before it was unveiled yesterday, and he said, “I love it, I love the blue. NAPA is such a great partner and sponsor, so we're just super excited about this young man.”

Schmidt: says IndyCar costs getting hard to justify
Sam Schmidt slams IndyCar
If you read AR1.com you have heard us say this repeatedly over the years, the costs of IndyCar racing is not sustainable with the TV ratings the series is pulling on NBCSN. We have also said many times that IndyCar should position itself as a low cost alternative to F1 and race in the many cities that cannot afford an F1 race. Instead IndyCar prefers to think small and stay a 'small' shrinking domestic series. The current owners are clueless how to grow IndyCar into a global powerhouse.  Clueless.

Sam Schmidt told motorsport.com that the escalating cost of entering the Verizon IndyCar Series, is why some teams are considering downsizing for 2016.

Holdup on IndyCar engine deals
A reader asks, Dear AR1.com, I am getting concerned that Honda and Chevy have not yet renewed for next year. I know Honda is holding out for the aero kit changes they requested.  What is going on? Should I be concerned? Steve D. Columbus, Ohio

Dear Steve, IndyCar should not be signing any new engine or TV deals right now. As I wrote when I broke the story on the X1 proposal for IndyCar, the X1 group had big plans for IndyCar, including a new TV deal, new cars and new engines all starting in 2018 or 2019.

Chevy Bolt EV to get over 200 miles per charge
Chevy Bolt EV
Chevy Bolt EV
General Motors set aside traditional vehicle development to create the Chevrolet Bolt EV, which can travel more than 200 miles on a single electric charge.

Offering consumers the first long-range, affordable EV, required an unprecedented supplier relationship combining expertise in infotainment, battery systems and component development with GM’s proven in-house capabilities in electric motor design, battery control, system validation and vehicle body/system integration.

Following joint planning and research, GM and LG Corp. brought the Chevrolet Bolt EV to reality. The Bolt EV concept was shown at the North American International Auto Show in January this year.  Chevrolet confirmed in February that the Bolt EV would go into production at GM’s Orion Township (Mich.) assembly plant in late 2016.

VW's 12-brand empire under scrutiny as costs of emissions scandal mount
VW has sold more cars than ever in Europe since the scandal. They will be just fine.
Faced with billions of euros in costs for its emissions cheating scandal, Volkswagen Group may have to consider an overhaul of a 12-brand empire built in the last two decades that makes everything from mass-market cars to motorbikes and heavy trucks.

While VW in the past could afford to prop up financially struggling divisions such as the Spanish Seat unit, Bugatti supercar nameplate and MAN heavy trucks with robust profit from Porsche and Audi, that money will now need to help cover costs linked to the crisis.

"VW has several brands that fall into the 'nice to have' category," said Stefan Bratzel, director of the Center of Automotive Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, who estimates the scandal will cost VW as much as 30 billion euros ($34 billion). "Bugatti, Lamborghini, Ducati too -- they are not core to the company in terms of making money."

Indy Lights Champion Pigot to drive for Rahal in select IndyCar races
Spencer Pigot

Spencer Pigot is a poster boy for the Mazda Road to Indy. Today's announcement that the 22-year-old from Orlando, Fla., will contest at least three rounds of the Verizon IndyCar Series in 2016 with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, including the historic 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, completes a remarkable journey that has taken him from karting all the way to the pinnacle of open-wheel racing in North America in just seven years.

"The Mazda Road to Indy has been vital for my development as a driver," said Pigot, who has won no fewer than four scholarship prizes from Mazda – the first driver to do so – to maintain his career's momentum. "It's safe to say I wouldn't be going into the Verizon IndyCar Series without the experience and support I gained from each level. Each car teaches you something new and racing at the same tracks as IndyCar throughout my Mazda Road to Indy career will only help my transition. It's the place to be for anyone trying to make it to IndyCar."

European Insurance Ruling Could Drive Up Price Of Motor Racing
Tens of thousands of motor racing enthusiasts "could be priced out of the sport by a European ruling that could force all competitors to buy insurance," according to Graeme Paton of the LONDON TIMES.

It is "feared that changes to rules governing insurance across the continent" may make it "too expensive" for many drivers to compete in amateur karting, rallying and drag racing. Racing chiefs are reportedly now in talks with the Department for Transport about exemptions. The move stems from a legal case involving Damijan Vnuk, a Slovenian farm worker, who was injured in '07 after falling from a ladder that was "hit by a tractor trailer as it was reversing."

Kenseth, Logano comment on contact at Kansas
Logano spins Kenseth. Paybacks are a bitch
Logano spins Kenseth. Paybacks are a bitch

What happened between yourself and Joey Logano in the closing laps?
Kenseth: "It's hard to drive a car with the rear tires off the ground. I was moving around the best I could, Joey (Logano) was a lot tighter, a lot faster on the short run, but we were so much better on the long run. I could still kind of get up to the top and get a run and get around him. We caught those two lapped cars, 'Crazy' (spotter) told me I was clear and I was, I pulled up in front of him and he just lifted my tires off the ground and he wrecked us."

What will you talk to Joey Logano about after the incident?
Kenseth: "I won't talk to Joey (Logano), I don't have anything to talk to him about really. You make decisions every day, you make decisions every minute behind the wheel. To me strategically, that doesn't seem like such a great decision for him, but it's the one he made and that's how he wanted to win. I'm one of the only guys that I think hasn't been into yet with Joey and I've always raced him with a ton of respect, I've actually been one of his biggest fans - I'm certainly not anymore, but I always was. It's a shame, I'm glad the cars not wrecked, we'll just go onto Talladega and race them there."(Toyota Racing)

The battle for the DTM title has been decided: while Timo Scheider had a solitary drive to victory in race one at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg and crossed the finish line as the undisputed winner, eighth place was enough for Pascal Wehrlein to be crowned the youngest ever DTM champion in history of the popular touring car series.
