Jolyon Palmer gets 2nd 2016 Lotus Formula 1 race seat
Jolyon Palmer, like teammate Maldonado, brought a big check to buy the ride
Lotus F1 Team is pleased to announce that Third and Reserve driver Jolyon Palmer has been promoted to a race seat for the 2016 season, completing the team's driver line-up alongside Pastor Maldonado.

Jolyon, 24, has driven for the team in the majority of this season's Free Practice 1 sessions, and will be back in the E23 Hybrid at this weekend's United States Grand Prix. He joined Lotus F1 Team in January, following an outstanding GP2 campaign in 2014 where he won the championship in dominant fashion, becoming the first British driver to win the GP2 Series since Lewis Hamilton in 2006.

USGP: Practice 2 a washout as 200 MPH hurricane makes landfall
COTA is going to be very wet for the next 36 hours or more
The predicted heavy rains have hit the Circuit of Americas in Austin as the 2nd practice is a washout. The track is undriveable. No drivers have turned laps and we doubt any will before the session is over. Tomorrow is not going to be much better as the weather being spun off by Hurricane Patricia - the most powerful tropical cyclone ever measured in the Western Hemisphere with sustained winds of 200 mph (320 kph) - reaches into Mexico and Texas.

The hurricane is forecast to make landfall in the Mexican state of Jalisco Friday evening as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane capable of causing widespread destruction. Residents and authorities in Mexico are rushing to prepare for what will likely be the strongest hurricane to ever make landfall on that country's Pacific coastline.

NBC Seeing Year-To-Year U.S. F1 Viewership Gains As Series Returns To Austin
As F1 returns to Circuit of the Americas in Austin this weekend for the U.S. Grand Prix, it "appears that more Americans are taking notice of the sport as it slowly develops a foothold," according to Sean Shapiro of the AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN.

NBC and NBCSN have averaged 535,000 viewers for 13 F1 races this year, which is "a jump" of 4% over the same point in '14. But viewership "is up" 58% over '13, when F1 made its second appearance at COTA and NBC first acquired F1 broadcast rights in the U.S.

Many F1 races "haven’t occurred at ideal times for live broadcasts aimed at American audiences."

USGP: Practice 1 update
Here are the times on a semi-wet track in Austin with about 30 min left to run. Nico Rosberg is fastest and both Mercedes are 5+ KPH faster thru the speed traps than anyone else and they are not even trying yet. They simply have far more power than anyone else. Not many cars on the track given the conditions.

The only American in the field, Alexander Rossi, is some 7 sec. off the pace in the Manor slug.  That's a great way to ruin your career when everyone sees timing and scoring and thinks, who is that wanker 7 full seconds off the pace? But he is beating his teammate Will Stevens. F1 will never again be popular in the USA until an American is driving a competitive car.

Trulli to miss Beijing ePrix
There will be just 18 competitors entered for the FIA Formula E Championship season opener, the Beijing ePrix, after the Trulli team’s entry – the Motomatica JT-01 – was not submitted for the official scrutineering process ahead of the event.

The team claimed that key components had been held up in customs and were granted an extension to submit these for sealing. These components were not submitted in time.

As the car has not been scrutineered, the team is not part of the official entry list for the season two opening round, which takes place in Beijing on October 24.

10/21/15 Ferrari, the inimitable Italian luxury sports car maker, garnered a rich $10 billion valuation on Wall Street Tuesday as its initial public offering went out at $52 a share.

Finding 2.5 seconds before 2016 is 'realistic' - Alonso
Alonso forgets that Mercedes will be at least 2 seconds faster in 2016, so how much will Honda really gain?
Alonso forgets that Mercedes will be at least 2 seconds faster in 2016, so how much will Honda really gain?
Fernando Alonso reckons McLaren and Honda have what it takes to close their current two and half second deficit to the front-running teams over the winter period.
The British team has struggled all season - scoring just 19 points - with much of the blame placed on the shoulders of its Japanese engine supplier.

Alonso however says closing the gap remains a realistic target for the team: "Two and a half seconds. If we improve two and a half seconds, we will win next year," he said in Austin.

"It's realistic but the thing is that we need to work very hard with a very high discipline all winter and all united, because in this new Formula 1 everything is a package."

Roger Penske
Roger Penske

Roger Penske presides over a NASCAR Sprint Cup that has dominated this season’s Chase.

Rossi's sponsor brewing big F1 plans for young American driver
Rossi will need more backers like Gesser to come up with $10M to buy his F1 ride in 2016
Rossi will need more backers like Gesser to come up with $10M to buy his F1 ride in 2016. Can I pay the Dallas Cowboys to be their QB? If the athletes have to buy their way onto the field it's not a sport.

If horse racing is the sport of kings, then Formula One is the sport of billionaires. The opulence extends to the sponsors, where Swiss watch manufacturers, oil giants, Persian Gulf state airlines and high-octane energy drink-makers all jostle to throw millions and millions of dollars at the teams on the F1 grid.

So why is the Alaska Coffee Roasting Co., with two shops in Fairbanks, one in Florida and an eye on Austin, part of the sponsorship mix?

"I'm still a little numb," said owner Michael Gesser. "I'm sort of a legacy guy, a boutique, a smaller company."

Pieter Rossi, whose son Alexander is the only American driver in F1, explained that "Mike is a modest (financial) sponsor, and he never professes to be the big guy, but he's by far the most loyal. He's at the top of the pile when it comes to loyalty."

Porsche 919 Hybrid and 911 RSR - Rolling race labs as brand ambassadors
Team Porsche en route to victory at the 6 Hours of Fuji

(Stuttgart) - The World Endurance Championship WEC heads onto the final stretch with the penultimate of eight races on 1 November in Shanghai (CN). Should all go well in the race, Porsche as the current leader could take home the overall World Manufacturers' Championship title. This would be the first world championship title for the sports car manufacturer since 1986. In endurance racing more than in any other category of top motorsport, the emphasis is on the marque. There are three reasons for this: Automobile manufacturers measures themselves in terms of technical innovation, teams win rather than individuals, and it's about teamwork in all its diversity.

Some NASCAR teams using shorter valve stems
Some Sprint Cup Series teams began using shorter valve stems in their tires two weeks ago at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a move that they hope will lessen the likelihood of suffering a flat tire caused by contact with lug nuts.

There have been several instances of flat tires shortly after pit stops this year, and at least one crew chief has said lug nuts hitting the valve stems during tire changes have been the culprit. The shorter stems, it is believed, are less likely to be struck in the rush of a pit stop. "It's not a new design; we just shortened it as much as we can to allow the same core to be inside the valve stem," Greg Stucker, Director of Race Tire Sales for Goodyear, said.

"It just gets it out of the way a little bit more. It's not going to be a fix; but that's all we can do right now. It's a reaction to the people wanting us to do something so we did it as quickly as we could." NASCAR.com

Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo
Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo
In the hot and humid conditions (Track temp. 47˚C) at the Sepang International Circuit it was Movistar Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo who ended the day on top to send out a message to his title rival Valentino Rossi. All of the talk before the riders took to the track was about Rossi's comments revolving around Marc Marquez from the Press Conference, but it was Rossi's Movistar Yamaha teammate Lorenzo that stole the show amongst the haze at the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix.
