9th pole of year for Ferrari team
Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc

Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel will start tomorrow’s Mexican Grand Prix from the front row when it gets underway at 13.10 local time (20.10 CET.) It was not as easy as it sounds however, as the final minutes of Q3 were chaotic. Sebastian Vettel was not able to fight for pole all the way to the end, because of yellow flags waved after Valtteri Bottas crashed. In fact, the German had to abort his lap just when he was improving his time and might have been able to beat the quickest time set by Max Verstappen, or at least beaten his team-mate Leclerc to second spot.

In Parc Ferme Vettel laughs and tells Max, what you did not see the yellow? You dumb arse

Max Verstappen has been stripped of pole position for failing to slow sufficiently for a yellow flag in the wake of Valtteri Bottas’ crash during qualifying in Mexico, with Charles Leclerc promoted to top spot with his Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel alongside.

Verstappen, already on provisional pole, improved on his effort and set a purple time through the final sector, in which a single yellow flag was shown due to Bottas’ crash moments beforehand.

Verstappen in the press conference emphasized that he did not back off.

Can Logano win the pole again later today?

Trouble came early for playoff contender Chase Elliott at Martinsville Speedway as the Georgia native’s engine failed just five laps into the weekend’s first practice session. The No. 9 Chevrolet burst into flames on track as Elliott made his first run of the day, bringing out the red flag for fluid on the track. Elliott will start at the rear of the field on Sunday due to the change, a challenge at Martinsville where the leaders will catch the tail of the field very quickly.

Ferrari 1-2 in final Mexican GP practice
Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc
Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel tuned nearly identical times to run 1-2 in final practice for the Mexican GP in Mexico City.

Leclerc put up a time of 1m16.145s to edge Vettel by just 0.027s

Leclerc might have beaten Vettel in the closing moments, but the German is looking very solid here this weekend. The Monegasque has proven to be very adept at qualifying of late after he eliminated those early-season mistakes, so we do expect a huge battle between those two.

Mexican GP promoter credits Netflix for surge of female fans
Alejandro Soberon
Alejandro Soberon
Mexican Grand Prix organizers say more women than ever are expected to attend this year's Formula One race, thanks to the success of a Netflix fly-on-the-wall documentary series.

Alejandro Soberon, president of promoters CIE, told reporters on Friday that data showed a 30% increase in female interest for a race that has sold out for the fifth year in a row.

"I think this series especially had an effect on ladies, who found this racing concept extremely boring until they discovered there was drama behind, there was a different narrative, and I think that helped," he said.

FE champion Jean-Eric Vergne recently told Motorsport.com that the all-electric series, which cites helping against climate change and promoting electric vehicles as its primary objective, was the perfect fit for Hamilton and his green credentials after his F1 career ends.

Ferrari files patent for more fuel efficient V12
Maranello refuses to hybridize its flagship 6.5-liter motor
Maranello refuses to hybridize its flagship 6.5-liter motor

Ferrari has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a new V12 engine that should be more efficient than the company’s current twelve-cylinder powertrains.

In the patent, Ferrari explains how two different combustion methods could improve the efficiency of the engine. The first sees a small amount of fuel injected just before the spark plug ignites to create a hotter air-fuel mixture that will allow the catalytic system to rapidly gain heat at engine start-up, reducing emissions during this phase. Ferrari’s second solution sees a pre-chamber fitted above the main combustion chamber, from which it is separated by wall and communicates through one or more free connection ports and has a second set of spark plugs “for cyclically and selectively determining the ignition of the mixture present in the pre-chamber and triggering the combustion reaction”.

Like Sandown last month, there is a fantastic battle brewing for the 2019 title, with Emery holding a strong points lead on the series return to the demanding 2.98-kilometer, 15-turn Surfers Paradise street circuit, a circuit at which he will be need to call on experience he gained in a V8 Ute all the way back in 2005, whilst title rival Peter Hackett has enjoyed more recent success, with a pair of podium finishes in an Erebus Motorsport Mercedes-AMG SLS in 2012.

The pair though won’t be alone this weekend, with former Australian GT race winners Fraser Ross, Tony Quinn and Ryan Millier all expected to take the fight to the title contenders, all three returning to the series after strong runs during the season’s other street circuit event - the Melbourne Grand Prix.

That is still possible thanks to the fact that there are extra points, 13 instead of the usual 10, on offer for the win and the Red Bull Junior would love a maiden victory.
