F1 crisis: money worries and red tape harm US Grand Prix
Last year's USGP winner Sebastian Vettel won't take part in qualifying this year because of rules made by mental midgets
Formula 1 heads to the US this week in something close to disarray, with two teams in administration and others reportedly close to the wall, audiences and sponsorship under pressure and a warning from Mario Andretti that the sport needs to "loosen up" on its obsession with technical specifications.

The Marussia and Caterham teams both went into administration this week and this Sunday's American Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, will take place "against a background of spiraling costs, unequal payments to teams, falling crowds and TV audiences, as well as declining sponsorship and no agreement about capping costs", laments Paul Weaver in The Guardian. "The sport has reached the point of no return."

NASCAR sends memo to teams about Ebola
NASCAR sent a memo to teams Monday, sharing guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outlining the transmission of the Ebola virus. All three NASCAR National Series travel to Texas Motor Speedway this weekend. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas has treated at least two Ebola patients in recent weeks, raising concern in come corners over the safety of teams, officials and fans.

The memo confirmed that Ebola can be contracted only by traveling to countries where there are outbreaks in progress, by coming into physical contact with individuals who have treated Ebola patients or by "coming into contact with someone who recently traveled from West Africa AND has symptoms of Ebola."

The memo says NASCAR will "continue to closely monitor the situation and remain in communication with our group of consulting physicians as well as our track partners and local public health officials." The sanctioning body did not recommend any changes to the daily routines for drivers or crewmembers, who come in regular contact with large numbers of fans.

Remembering Raymond Beadle
Raymond Beadle
by Jon Asher/CompetitionPlus
Shortly after the New Year I was asked by the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America if I'd write a short biography for the induction of Raymond Beadle. The ceremony was slated for August, so I had plenty of time, and while I was honored to have been asked, there was a problem. The copy had to be no more than 500 words due to space limitations. How do you compress an individual's stellar career in racing into so few words, particularly when that person's fingerprints are all over the history of not only drag racing, but stock car racing as well? And how can you possibly capture the essence of a personality as gregarious and outrageous as was Beadle's in just a few paragraphs?

Raymond's career demanded more than 500 words if for no other reason than the man himself was bigger than that. He had a major impact on drag racing, one that went far beyond mere statistics. Yes, he was an NHRA champion (three times consecutively!) and a two-time winner of the U.S. Nationals (among many other victories), but those are just numbers, and Beadle was more than that, too. That he would also prove successful in NASCAR racing surprised many, but he knew talent when he spotted it, and together with driver Rusty Wallace (another 2014 Hall of Fame inductee) they won the '89 Cup championship. Less than a handful of owner/drivers can claim such lofty accomplishments on their resumes.

Just how much is an F1 track really worth?
It "is not merely a question for F1 aficionados and playboy investors, according to an American-Statesman analysis done with the assistance of London-based Formula Money, an independent annual financial guide to the sport." Lawyers "will begin arguing in Austin courts this spring" about the taxable value of Austin’s F1 track, Circuit of the Americas. Millions of property tax dollars "are at stake." One thing "is clear from the dispute and from similar situations in other parts of the world: Formula One tracks are dicey investments."

They face such bizarre financial realities that "they appear to lose most of their value the moment construction is finished" -- complicating the task of figuring out how much track owners should pay in taxes. Formula Money editor Christian Sylt said the underlying economics "call into question why investors would agree to fund construction." He added, "Maybe investors are not always aware of this destruction in value before they commit their money to a project ... which costs around 20 times more than it will be worth." The merged CFH Racing Chevrolet team has Josef Newgarden, JR Hildebrand and Ed Carpenter on site, while Andretti Autosport is also providing German Daniel Abt his first crack at an IndyCar. Newgarden and Hildebrand are driving the pair of CFH entries.

A tweet from Barber Motorsports Park said Graham Rahal was testing, but that was incorrect.

Mario Andretti lays it on the line to F1, a sport no one can afford
Mario Andretti makes valid suggestions for F1
Bernie Ecclestone has been told he must make a better job of selling Formula One by leading figures hosting this Sunday's US Grand Prix in Texas.

This week the sport travels to Austin in crisis, with the futures of Caterham and Marussia in the balance, and other teams close to the wall. Pressure is mounting on Ecclestone, the sport's chief executive and commercial rights holder, to take note, with the message from Mario Andretti, the official ambassador for the race in Austin, and Bobby Epstein, the co-founder of the Circuit of the Americas (Cota), that F1 needs to "loosen up a bit" and "make the sport about personalities".

Caterham went into administration on Friday and have been given special dispensation not to take part in the next two races as they seek a buyer. Marussia went into administration on Monday and will also miss the next two grands prix, though they are still planning to take part in the final race of the season, in Abu Dhabi on 23 November.

Harvick not happy with Kenseth after Martinsville wreck
Kevin Harvick put Matt Kenseth on notice at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday. Harvick told reporters following the Goody's 500, "He will not win this championship. I can promise you that." On Lap 228, Kenseth bounced off the back of Denny Hamlin, slowed and wheel-hopped, then clipped Harvick and sent the #4 Chevy spinning into the wall in Turn 2. Tony Stewart was also collected in the melee but recovered and finished fourth. Harvick was forced to retire to the garage for repairs and didn't return until 40 laps later. He restarted in 40th, 41 laps off of the pace. Harvick, who started 33rd moved up into the top 10 on Lap 113. When Harvick returned to the track, he brake-checked Kenseth "four or five times" according to the driver of the #20, who added, "he's trying to knock my radiator out."

Kahne and Vickers disagree
Kahne gets spun by Vickers
In the case of Kasey Kahne vs. Brian Vickers, it's he said, he said. Kahne claims innocence, while Vickers didn't hesitate in his accusations. The two drivers were involved in a Lap-161 incident that left Vickers without a hood on his car and looking for payback. Kahne, feeling pressure from leader Jeff Gordon, caught Vickers in the left-rear corner panel of his car in Turn 4, sending the #55 around and into the inside wall. The Hendrick Motorsports driver said he had no intention of spinning Vickers, but that Vickers was using every lane that he could, coming close to hitting Kahne earlier in the lap in Turn 2. "I was passing him and he ran me into the Turn 2 wall or he was going to, so I lifted. Then he blocked into 3, so I turned to go low and then he comes low and spun himself out," Kahne said after being released from the infield care center for an unrelated incident on Lap 438. Vickers disagreed. "He definitely wrecked us on purpose the first time, I mean look at the video," Vickers said. "He just hooked us in the bumper and just wrecked us, I don't know why."

Max Mosley predicted this is what would happen to F1
Max Mosley predicted the manufacturers would drive F1 costs so high the sport would collapse.  The new 'green' power units are so expensive and so unnecessary
Formula One's authorities are coming under fierce attack for failing to curtail spiraling costs amid a financial crisis in the sport which has left two teams on the brink of collapse.

The FIA, motorsport's governing body, had pledged to introduce a cost cap and has angered the sport's smallest outfits with its failure to push it through. It faced opposition from Bernie Ecclestone, the sport's supremo, as well as the biggest teams, including Red Bull and Ferrari, who spend around 140?million a year.

Jean Todt, the FIA president, told the Telegraph before this season began that "a lot of teams will die" if nothing meaningful is done to curb F1's massive budgets.

The Frenchman's prediction, also made by several of the smaller squads who operate on a shoestring budget, appears to be coming true with the demise of Caterham and Marussia.

Both will miss the next two races in Austin and Sao Paulo with their future beyond that bleak.

Do you remember how awesome F1 cars used to be? (Update) UPDATE AR1.com's Mark Cipolloni proposed this type of car, but built far more economical than an F1 car, for IndyCar 10 years ago almost to the day in this article.  Did they listen?  Of course not, hence look where the sport is now without a car than runs chills down your spine.

10/26/14 F1 has stepped on their dicks with their new cars.  They are terribly expensive, bankrupting two teams with more to come, they are 8 seconds per lap slower and they sound horrible. Watch as Juan Montoya takes pole at Spa in 2005 from the then 'King of Spa', Kimi Raikkonen.  Turn up your volume and listen to the cars scream, watch how fast they are, and you will realize just how much the mental midgets have ruined the sport with today's cars.

Ecclestone: Teams will supply third cars to rivals
The door is now open for Alonso to drive the third Mercedes car next year
Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that Formula One's teams have signed contracts agreeing to help competitors which get into financial trouble by supplying a third car to them according to an article in the Mail on Sunday by Christian Sylt.

The controversial third car clause has been one of the biggest talking points of the season. It is written into the contracts which commit the teams to staying in F1 until the end of 2020 and it forces them to field a third car if the grid slips below a threshold of 20 cars. It was thought that the teams would have to run the third car themselves but Ecclestone says that in fact it would be supplied to ailing rivals to stop them from going under.

The situation is far from hypothetical as the article also reveals that Marussia notified London's High Court on 7 October that it intends to go into administration. It follows the collapse this week of Caterham. Eleventh hour talks are underway to save it and Ecclestone says another team may have to step in.

Wallace wins Martinsville Truck race
Driving a No. 34 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota painted and numbered as a tribute to NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee Wendell Scott -- and with Scott's family in attendance at Martinsville Speedway -- polesitter Darrell Wallace Jr. held off Timothy Peters to win Saturday's Kroger 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race.

Last year at Martinsville, driving the No. 54 KBM Tundra, Wallace became the first African-American driver to win a race in one of NASCAR's top three touring series since Scott accomplished the feat in what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on Dec. 1, 1963 at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Florida.

Though his number was changed to 34 on Saturday, in honor of Scott's traditional car number, the result was the same for Wallace, who grabbed the lead from Johnny Sauter in heavy traffic on Lap 188 of 200, moments before the 11th caution slowed the race.

Patrick: Logano needs to keep "proving he's sorry"
Danica Patrick
(Editor's note: Danica Patrick's on-track performances certainly don't warrant any headlines. But, as you'll see in this AP article that hasn't stopped the spotlight-obsessed Patrick from seeking them. And because she certainly isn't capable of competing for a championship on-track, apparently she figures she can make headlines by threatening to wreck those who are. Pathetic if you ask us.)

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) — Things may not be as rosy between Danica Patrick and Joey Logano as Logano believes.

Logano said earlier this week he had smoothed things over with Patrick and did not expect retaliation over an incident earlier this month between the two at Charlotte. Patrick cautioned Saturday she will not be pushed around by Logano or anyone else on the race track.

DARRELL WALLACE JR., No. 34 Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
Finishing Position: 1st

Were you worried about the other drivers on the final restart?

"I wasn't worried about anybody honestly.  They kept telling me where everybody was and I said I didn't care.  It's our weekend and we're going to come out and take this clock home with us and we just did that.  That was so fun.  Martinsville is my favorite place to come to.  Without the support of NASCAR and Toyota -- the whole Wendell Scott family is here and this is a special moment.  Just a perfect weekend for us.  It's a true honor to have Wendell Scott on our Toyota Tundra and to be able to put it in victory lane -- I know he (Scott) just said up there, 'Hell yeah.'  This is cool."

"I think in another 10 or 15 years I'll have it.  It was a good lap for us, especially that first session.  It surprised me with our speed there and thought we were going to have a shot at the pole and I didn't quite have the same feel I wanted there last lap.  Overall, that's great -- you can't complain about starting third, especially here.  There have been a lot of times I've been 33rd.  It was a good day for us."

Matt Kenseth has never won at Martinsville.
Did you have a shot at the pole for Sunday's race?

Johnson open to team changes next season
Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie Johnson talked to the media Friday at Martinsville Speedway:

WE'RE INTERESTED TO KNOW YOUR MINDSET OVER THESE FOUR RACES. YOU CAN'T DEFEND YOUR CHAMPIONSHIP BUT YOU CAN CERTAINLY WIN RACES.
The mindset is simple. We want to close out the year well and finish as high as we can in points. We want to win races. That's what we're here for. We did not have a good last three races for a variety of reasons. The results weren't there. Frankly, two of those results would have eliminated us from championship hope (in past years). I felt like at Talladega, we were given a pretty big gift and we came close to taking advantage of that opportunity. We want to do well. We want to win races. At the same time, this does open up an opportunity for us to work on '15 from a personnel standpoint and even from a 2015 test plan. Obviously testing is gone next year, so anything we can do to work on the 2015 package will suit us well. We're not slowing down any. These last four weeks are going to be about as busy as any as we're getting geared up for 2015."

Danica has hissy-fit with Mike Helton
Danica Patrick fights boyfriend's battles
Last week's bizarre qualifying session at Talladega Superspeedway left many drivers displeased, but perhaps none more than Danica Patrick, who took her frustration directly to NASCAR president Mike Helton.

The rules of the format prompted many drivers to elect to sit on pit road until the final minutes before attempting to post a lap. That left Patrick fuming. Not just about what transpired, but that two full-time teams -- including Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Patrick's boyfriend -- failed to qualify.

"I was really pissed off after qualifying," Patrick said Friday at Martinsville Speedway. "I went to the NASCAR hauler and I said, 'What the [expletive] is this? Is that what we were trying to accomplish?'

"Part of it was because it was Ricky, and part of it was because that could have just as easily been me. I know how important those races are to me and my team, but also my sponsors and the people who invest in those events, especially the big ones at the speedways, but all of them. ... I was fighting for not having someone that wasn't deserving being in that situation."

F1 cars now 8 seconds slower than 10 years ago
Today's F1 cars are anemic compared to 10 years ago.
Even before it really started, this F1 season has been loaded with negative emotions from the fans, the teams and everyone else somewhat involved with Formula One. And yet, we have seen spectacular racing, both between the silver arrow drivers and their rivals of Red Bull, Ferrari and Williams. What we didn't see is just how slow current F1 cars have gotten.

Let's start our comparison at the height of fast V10 cars, with the dominant Ferrari F2004. What we need now are tracks of different characteristics but have not changed in 10 years. Melbourne and Sepang are classified as intermediate tracks, Canada and Monza as high-speed, Hungary and Monaco as high downforce tracks, and they all have been untouched (more or less).

With one exception (Canada 2013), the lap times increased constantly, and from generation to generation. Even the super complicated 2008 cars running on Bridgestone tires lost significant speed, and the current crop of F1 cars is down 8 seconds on the longer tracks that require both power and downforce.

Ambrose returns to V8 Supercars early for Sydney
Marcos Ambrose
Marcos Ambrose will return to V8 Supercars at this year's Sydney NRMA 500 in December.

The two-time Champion was the dominant force in V8 Supercars before moving to a successful NASCAR career in the US. He announced this month he would return to V8 Supercars fulltime next year joining US giant Roger Penske and Dick Johnson Racing.

His return has been fast-tracked with DJR Team Penske entering a wildcard nomination for the Sydney NRMA 500 in what will be a massive boost for the event in December.

V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton said having Ambrose in Sydney as an early taste of the Penske arrival next year was a watershed moment for the sport.
