Major stakeholder pleased with racing seen in Austin
Donald Mackenzie
Donald Mackenzie, co-founder of Formula One major stakeholder CVC, says the spectacular United States Grand Prix demonstrated the sport can still put on a great show when the circumstances are right.

Inevitably, the recent dominance of Mercedes has put F1 in a negative light in the eyes of many observers, but the U.S. GP did much to redress the balance.

"It was a brilliant race," Mackenzie said. "I was pleased for Lewis [Hamilton], and also for the fans.

"I came from England - I was worried about coming all this way and it not happening."

The Force India F1 team requested an advance on its '16 championship money to help tide it "through the winter and pay suppliers," according to Alan Baldwin of REUTERS. Deputy Team Principal Bob Fernley said that "the request was for a payment similar to the one Force India received" from F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone before the start of this season.

He said, "The only difference between what we did at the beginning of this year and what we are planning for 2016 is just bringing it forward a month or so earlier to cash-flow it better. ...

U.S. Grand Prix Organizers Blame Rain For Dip In Attendance On Race Weekend
Heavy rains hurt the USGP
American organizers have blamed inclement weather for falling attendance at this year's U.S. F1 Grand Prix. The fourth running of the event at the Circuit of the Americas near Austin, Texas, saw Sunday's race attendance decline by more than 6,000 in comparison to last year to a total of 101,667. COTA also reported a drop in three-day attendance -- from 237,406 in '14 to 224,011 this year. Both figures are the lowest since the circuit's debut in '12.

COTA's attendance figures have been declining year-after-year since more than 265,000 showed up for the inaugural grand prix. COTA President & CEO Jason Dial told SBD Global this year's decline was all caused by weather.

Oliver Rowland eyes F1 career
Oliver Rowland
Oliver Rowland
For Oliver Rowland, 2015 was all about records: most victories, podiums and points in a season in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series and an unprecedented run of 20 consecutive top ten finishes. At 23 years of age, the Racing Steps Foundation-backed Englishman has done it all in the categories organized by Renault Sport Technologies and now hopes to have a chance at the next level.

Following a brilliant career in karting where he won the 2008 KF2 World Cup and 2010 Super KF-KF1, Rowland's single-seater debut was just as promising when he finished runner-up in the 2011 Formula Renault UK in his first full season.

Spencer Pigot and his IndyCar ride
Spencer Pigot
Spencer Pigot
Q:
What great news for Spencer Pigot! I agree with Marshall that this is a perfect place for this talented young man. Now, let's hope that Bobby can find sponsorship for an entire season, or at least a good part of the season. I salute Mr. Rahal for recognizing Spencer's talent and taking a chance. Am hoping that other team owners will step up to the plate to support young American talent. Deb Schaefer, L.A.

Robin Miller/Racer.com: Well let's be honest, without the $1 million from Dan Andersen's Mazda Road to Indy, Spencer wouldn't be driving an IndyCar next year. But I give Rahal props because he's always given Americans like Buddy Rice, RHR, Danica, Hertamania, Vasser and Simmons a job. And I doubt $1 million is enough to cover three races, so Bob, David Letterman and Mike Lanigan are making it work. Rahal and Michael Andretti have kept the red, white and blue behind the wheel when nobody else in IndyCar seems to care.

Between 2009 and 2014, while serving as chairman of Bristol's Economic Development Committee, Hurley received Bristol Motor Speedway tickets to be used for "economic development" purposes. He claimed the tickets would be given away, free of charge, to business representatives who showed an interest in relocating to Bristol. FIA to test new curb to deter cheaters
The FIA will test a new type of curb designed to deter drivers from exceeding track limits and gaining an advantage.

Race stewards have struggled to enforce track limits in recent years as asphalt run-off areas provide no real punishment when drivers do run wide. As a result, motorsport's governing body has been investigating new ways of preventing drivers from using more of the track than they should.

The FIA has been analyzing a new exit curb which is twice the width of a normal curb comprising of two sections, with the outside edge of the initial curb sitting 25mm below track level and the outside edge of the second curb therefore at 50mm below track level.

Mercedes whining over plans for new F1 engine regulations
What does Toto and Niki say to their bosses when an engine that costs 1/3 of what the hybrid Mercedes costs blows their doors off? Remember it was largely Mercedes that devised the current engine formula.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says his team has "different objectives" to the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone with regards to new engine regulations.

The FIA announced on Monday it is pushing ahead with plans to introduce a cheaper "client engine" in 2017 in order to bring costs down for customer teams. The move is also designed to try and keep Red Bull in the sport as it threatens to quit F1 as a result of not having a competitive power unit. While Wolff understands why Ecclestone has been keen to make such a move, he is not in favor of the plan to introduce new engines.

"I think you have to understand the different perspectives in that situation," Wolff said. "You have the engine manufactures who spend a considerable amount of money, who have decided to enter Formula One and stay in Formula One because their particular engine concept fits what is happening on the roads.

Harvick defends Talladega incident
Kevin Harvick
Kevin Harvick
Kevin Harvick presented his side of the controversial Talladega Superspeedway finish on Tuesday, telling reporters he was trying to move up the track with a wounded engine when race-ending contact with Trevor Bayne occurred. In a 20-minute interview session for the third round of NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup, Harvick was not defensive or combative about the accusations he intentionally crashed Bayne to preserve his playoff spot. Instead, Harvick was calm and charming, telling reporters he understood why some of his competitors were angry but didn't feel the need to defend himself publicly. The defending series champion said he "never really even saw" Bayne - though he was light on specifics when pressed several times to recall more details.

"I just tried to get going and thinking and before I even knew, he was gone," Harvick said. "I didn't even really know he was out there until he was already by me. It all happens pretty fast."

IndyCar return to Phoenix to be a Saturday night (Update) UPDATE
With just three weeks to sell tickets after the Phoenix NASCAR Sprint Cup race, will the grandstands be mostly empty and IndyCar left with egg on their face yet again? Nothing like near empty grandstands on TV to project to sponsors and fans you are a loser.
Not only do they have just three weeks to make a push to sell tickets (ISC/NASCAR is not going to want to lose a single NASCAR ticket sale to IndyCar, hence no big IndyCar push will happen until the NASCAR race is over), the race falls on the same weekend as the 2016 Luke Air Force Base Air Show, which last year drew more than 150,000 spectators each of its two days - just 12 miles away.

10/27/15 Indianapolis 500-style racing is returning to Phoenix International Raceway for the first time since 2005. And it took a NASCAR guy to help make it happen reports Michael Knight of azcentral.com.

A multi-year contract between PIR and the IndyCar organization is expected to be made official Tuesday. The Phoenix Grand Prix will be Saturday evening (6 p.m.), April 2, 2016, as first reported in August by azcentral sports. Practice and qualifying will be the day before.

Also, IndyCar's major pre-season test session likely will be at PIR in February.

Jay Frye, who for almost two decades was general manager of the MB2, Valvoline and Red Bull Sprint Cup teams before becoming chief revenue officer for IndyCar's parent company in November 2013, was the key player in ending the open-wheel series' bad -- sometimes bizarre -- dealings with PIR.

Although not regarded in the paddock as a typical 'pay driver', Finn Bottas did take a couple of Finnish sponsors to his F1 seat, including the welding company Kemppi.

The company's logo is located on the front wing endplates of this year's Mercedes-powered Williams.

But Finnish reports including the broadcaster MTV and newspaper Ilta Sanomat claim Kemppi will no longer support Williams financially beyond 2015.

Hamilton Calls For F1 To Return To South Africa For First Time Since '93
Mario Andretti winning at Kyalami in South Africa in 1971 for Ferrari
Three-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has called for the sport to return to South Africa, according to the BBC. The Mercedes driver said, "I would love for it to be in South Africa. They are great sporting fans and are just petrolheads who love cars."

The South African GP featured 23 times on the F1 calendar following its debut in '62 but was last staged in '93.

Hamilton: "I would love to go there, it would be absolutely insane. There is a huge following there and it is one of the most important grands prix we need to get on the calendar."

The '15 season "equals the longest ever campaign" with 20 races. The next race is in Mexico City this weekend before moving on to Brazil and the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Hamilton added, "That is one of the greatest things about being a Formula 1 driver, the amount you travel, it is so much fun." BBC

How long before historic IndyCar track gets plowed under?
History be damned, Milwaukee is no longer a thriving racing market
History be damned, Milwaukee is no longer a thriving IndyCar racing market -- yet another victim of the split in IndyCar Racing caused by Tony George and the IRL

Without a promoter, there will be no IndyCar race at the Milwaukee Mile next year, and without a race next year, there doesn't seem to be much hope for big-time racing at the track in the future.

"It's really hard to say," said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., the parent company of IndyCar, during a conference call Tuesday.

"I don't feel terribly optimistic about it, although I think the Milwaukee market, darn it, it ought to have worked for us. There's a great tradition there."z

IndyCar announced its 2016 schedule Tuesday morning, and it didn't include any surprises. It contains 16 races, including the previously announced event at Road America in Elkhart Lake and a return to Phoenix, which also was no secret. Both had hosted Indy-style racing under several sanctioning bodies, Road America from 1982-2007 and Phoenix from 1964-2005.

Mercedes to have a talking to their children

With Nico Rosberg's disappointment palpable after losing to Lewis Hamilton in Austin, Toto Wolff concedes Mercedes need to take action to prevent a breakdown in the relationship.

Rosberg accused his team-mate of being "extremely aggressive" as they fought for the lead on the opening lap of the United States GP.

He lost out in the battle and later also lost the win to Hamilton after running off the track. The British racer went onto claim the win and his third World title.

Sprint Preparing To Return for lame duck year with NASCAR
Sprint is preparing to return in '16 "for a lame-duck year as title sponsor of NASCAR’s Cup Series, though the sponsor was open to leaving early if the opportunity arose," according to sources cited by Adam Stern in this week's SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL.

Sources said that the K.C.-based cellphone carrier "indicated to NASCAR months ago that if the sanctioning body found a brand that wanted to take over starting in 2016, Sprint would be open to the arrangement." The window to get a replacement by next year "has about closed due to the immense logistical planning and execution that go into such a switch."

Everything happens in NASCAR for a reason
This story is an example of what NASCAR will do to a team if they don't want them to win. Apparently SHR and Hendrick are not NASCAR's chosen teams this year. Chevy has been winning too much in recent years so they want a Ford or Toyota to win the Chase.

We have heard these stories many times over the years. NASCAR cannot afford to have Chevy win every year and then lose Ford or Toyota, or both.

NASCAR Race At Talladega Ends In Controversy, Called "Debacle"
Yesterday's Sprint Cup Series CampingWorld.com 500 at Talladega Superspeedway ended in "one of the most controversial finishes in NASCAR history." After "one try at an overtime finish was ruled not to be an attempt because the field had not yet crossed the start-finish line, a second ended immediately after it started when a multi-car crash broke out and necessitated a caution flag effectively ending the race." Joey Logano was ruled the winner. MRN.com

The race became "simply a colossal embarrassment" and a "complete debacle, unsatisfying in every way for fans." The race winner and the drivers who advanced in the Chase were "determined by video-tape after a crash." USA TODAY

Earnhardt Jr comments on final restart
Dale Jr.
Dale Jr.
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. met with the media after Sunday's race at Talladega:

Walk us through the final restart and your take on it:

Earnhardt, Jr. "I couldn't believe he (Joey Logano) gave me the bottom. I was like 'man this is a gift.' I was going to win the race for sure, but that caution came out. I'm fine with the new rule. Everybody is going to debate that we were thinking before the race that they made a good change on the green-white-checkered to go to one and I still feel that way. Per the rules we run second. I can live with that. The #22 (Joey Logano) did a great job. He had a hell of a round winning all three races. If he wins the championship he can look back on this round here as the one that set him up."

Harvick denies intentionally causing wreck on final restart
Harvick denies any wrongdoing
Harvick denies any wrongdoing
Kevin Harvick denied triggering a last-lap wreck Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway to ensure his advancing into the next round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. After one restart was aborted because of a crash before the leaders got to the start-finish line, Harvick, in 10th, was in jeopardy of falling out of the Chase as his motor was about to blow prior to the one attempt to have a green-white-checkered finish. Harvick's car didn't get going on the restart -- just as on the previous one -- and he pulled to the outside lane. He clipped #6-Trevor Bayne, causing a wreck that brought out the caution. At that point, the field was frozen, drivers could not gain positions and Joey Logano was awarded the checkered flag for his third consecutive win.

The difference between the drivers from Porsche and Audi in the standings amounts to a single point. 52 points are yet to be awarded this season. "The battle for the World Championship title has never before been as intense as this year," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.
