Caterham and Marussia no-shows in breach of regulations (Update) UPDATE The FIA also confirmed that Caterham and Marussia would escape penalty for missing this weekend's event, despite both teams breaking F1's entry regulations.

Article 13.2 (f) of the Sporting Regulations states that a team's application to race in the championship contains "an undertaking by the applicant to participate in every Event with the number of cars and drivers entered."

Any sanction has been waived by the FIA in view of the teams' parlous "current financial circumstances" but the rules breach has nonetheless been referred to FIA President Jean Todt.

FIA feels vindicated by F1's cost crisis
The FIA says the recent plight of Caterham and Marussia vindicates its push to introduce a budget cap earlier this season.

F1 is down to an 18-car grid - the first time since 2005 - for this weekend's United States Grand Prix in Austin after Caterham and Marussia fell into administration in the space of five days. Earlier this year FIA president Jean Todt was forced to abandon a proposed budget cap for 2015 due to opposition from the top teams in F1's Strategy Group, a decision which angered the sport's smallest outfits.

On Thursday the FIA released a statement saying it plans to continue working towards the goal of cutting costs in the sport.

What They're Saying About the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series Schedule
MARK MILES (CEO, Hulman & Co.): "The Verizon IndyCar Series calendar represents another step forward in our strategy to grow the series. There were several factors that led to the positive momentum we experienced in 2014 and we will continue to execute on those initiatives - continuity in our broadcast schedule, strategic growth of our schedule and improvements to how we promote our events. The continued support from our television partners at ABC and NBCSN, and the ongoing collaboration with promoters, teams and sponsor partners gives us a lot of confidence about our future."

ROGER PENSKE (Owner, Team Penske): "The 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule provides a good competitive balance of street circuits, road courses and oval tracks at some terrific venues for our sport. We are excited to visit new markets in Brasilia and New Orleans and ending the season at Sonoma Raceway will provide a great backdrop for the series championship."

Q&A Mario Andretti: a world champion’s view on Formula One’s US footprint
Mario Andretti
Mario Andretti is, quite simply, motorsport royalty. The 1978 Formula One world champion is also an ambassador for the United States Grand Prix and the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), the purpose-built circuit in Austin which will stage its third Formula One event this weekend. Last year the event attracted 113,162 on race day, a slight dip on the first event in 2012, but there is a sense that Formula One has made a breakthrough in the USA in recent times, thanks to the race and also the arrival of NBC as the country's Formula One broadcaster – world championship leader Lewis Hamilton appeared on NBC's morning show, Today, in Manhattan on Wednesday morning. With a US team in the works for 2016, there was plenty for Andretti to discuss as he took time out of his busy schedule – although retired from racing his legendary status means he is in constant demand – to speak to SportsPro.

Good weather expected for USGP
Severe rain caused a lengthy stoppage during the World Endurance Championship’s Six Hours of the Circuit of the Americas last month. But there’s no danger of the same happening in this weekend’s grand prix.

Fine weather is expected throughout all three days, though the temperatures won’t reach Thursday’s peak of 26C.

A cooling front will see overnight temperatures fall considerably, though in the daytime they should push towards the mid-20s.

By Sunday the local area will be clouding over and warming up slightly. That will bring a chance of rain on Monday but none is currently expected for race day.

Question mark hangs over 2015 IndyCar Series race in Toronto
Mario Andretti leading the IndyCar race at Mosport in 1968
We'll find out today whether Toronto will be on the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule. Cross fingers, though. It could happen. Or it might not.

For a racing series that's not doing any racing these days, the Verizon IndyCar Series is doing everything it can to keep itself front-and-centre in the news.

There's a driver announcement one minute and something else the next. Let's start with this, though.

Sometime today - this afternoon, in fact - the 2015 IndyCar schedule will finally be issued. The fact that most of the promoters have already sent out releases about dates and numbers to call for tickets hasn't discouraged the series from scheduling a media conference to make the Grand Announcement and offering up people for interviews. Whether anybody will really be interested remains to be seen.

Aaron Telitz: Ricky Bobby
Aaron Telitz
Brigstock, England – That's a pretty weird title, right? Don't worry, it's going to make a lot more sense soon!

I do believe we left off at the end of testing at Brands Hatch for the Formula Ford Festival. So Saturday dawns and brings with it – much to everyone's surprise – a bit of sunshine and warm weather! The track was still a little damp from an overnight shower when I made my way out for qualifying but I quickly figured out where the damp patches were and how to avoid them and then put in a quick lap amongst all the traffic. I used to complain about traffic in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda but I don't think I'll be able to do that anymore after experiencing 30 Formula Fords on a 1.2-mile track!

I knew my time was pretty good but had no idea if it would hold up until I came around the last lap of qualifying and saw the Cliff Dempsey guys holding up my pit board with "P1" on it. So, step one complete! If anyone would have asked me if I was going to qualify on pole my first time at Brands Hatch I probably would have told them "of course!" but, in reality that would've been a bit of a stretch!

F1 Owner Tony Fernandes Calls For Spending Reduction Throughout Grid
Tony Fernandes kisses money down a rat hole F1 goodbye
Former Caterham F1 Owner Tony Fernandes said that there will "never be room for small teams like Caterham in F1 unless there’s a reduction in spending throughout the grid," according to Mike Wise of SKY SPORTS.

Fernandes said on Wednesday that outfits like Caterham, "which he sold at the end of June, will never make progress if larger teams continue to spend what are, in his opinion, vastly-inflated budgets." Fernandes: "People can blame whoever, but the big teams are as much at fault as anyone. The gap has become way too big and it's money. And so I thought, 'Well, I can’t compete.' But I can compete at QPR; I can compete at Air Asia."

Neither Caterham nor their rivals Marussia will "race at this weekend's U.S. GP after both went into administration." Both teams entered F1 in '10 having been told they could "compete with a budget cap." More established teams had agreed to "limit their own spending around that time but that deal eventually broke down."

Fernandes: "Rather than continue something where I thought, one, I wasn't able to give it as much time as possible, two, I thought we were on a beating to none anyway, you’ve got to be brave and say 'Look, we screwed up. You can’t compete; you thought you could and time to leave." SKY SPORTS

Mercedes powered F1 teams want to keep their unfair advantage
Rob Smedley is towing the company line like a sheep.  Williams uses Mercedes engines and it is in their best interest not to give Ferrari or Renault a chance to catch up like it was in years past.  How convenient to lock in your unfair advantage with no chance of anyone catching up.
Williams head of vehicle performance Rob Smedley believes Formula One will again be wasting money if plans to unfreeze the current engine rules are pushed through for next season.

Ahead of this weekend's United States Grand Prix in Austin, battle lines have been drawn of late between Mercedes on one side and Ferrari and Renault on the other as to whether the current regulation should be relaxed.

Following a season of domination in the wake of the introduction at the start of the year of the 1.6-litre V6 turbo-charged power units, Mercedes are naturally keen to maintain the status quo.

At present, the rules dictate no changes are allowed for next season with regard to tweaking the engine, suggesting Mercedes will again have it all their own way.

Just as obvious is the fact Ferrari and Renault, who have comfortably languished behind Mercedes this term, are pushing for change in a bid to challenge.

A situation is due to be debated at next month's meeting of the F1 Commission in which all teams, the FIA, Bernie Ecclestone and race promoters will be present.

Blaney would go on to finish fourth in the event.

Glen Wood Has Seen Major Changes In NASCAR Championships
When Trevor Bayne and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team hit the track at Texas Motor Speedway, team founder Glen Wood will have one eye on the No. 21 Ford Fusion and the other on the three Ford drivers among the eight in the Eliminator Round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Additionally, Wood likely will be paying more attention to how Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Carl Edwards fare in the championship battle that he did to his own team back in 1963 when it won the owner's championship in the series now known as Sprint Cup.

Joe Weatherly, who drove for the Woods early in his career, won the driving title in '63, but he did it by driving for nine different car owners throughout the season, so none of them accumulated a significant number of owner points. Wood's team ran 24 of the 55 races that season with five different drivers behind the wheel of their No. 21 Ford. Fred Lorenzen, Tiny Lund, Dave MacDonald, Marvin Panch and Wood himself all spent time behind the wheel, and the team won three races and had 17 top-five finishes. Lund scored the biggest victory, winning the Daytona 500. Panch, who was burned in a sports car crash prior to the 500 and was unable to compete in the Great American Race, returned to the No. 21 later in the season and won at North Wilkesboro, while Wood himself took the victory at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Foyt Racing Expands to a two-car team with sponsor ABC Supply and Honda power
AJ Foyt
Off-season? What off season? Verizon IndyCar Series team owner A.J. Foyt and his son, Larry Foyt, have been busy since the 2014 season ended two months ago.

They have expanded the Verizon IndyCar Series team from one car to two, hired a rising star to drive while retaining the veteran driver who sparked life into the program. They made a deal with ABC Supply Co. Inc. to sponsor two cars for the next two years, and they bought another race shop in the shadow of Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

For the past 12 seasons, AJ Foyt Racing has been a single-car team, but that will change in 2015 with the hiring of 23-year-old driver Jack Hawksworth, the 2014 winner of INDYCAR's Tony Renna Rising Star Award. Hawksworth, of Bradford, England, will join veteran Takuma Sato, who returns for his third season with the ABC Supply Racing team. Their Dallaras will be powered by Honda engines and incorporate the Honda aerodynamic bodywork kits.

Nascar Inspections moving faster
Thanks to a collaborative effort with Microsoft, NASCAR's technical inspection process has been setting its own track records as the 2014 racing season hustles toward its conclusion. The development of a mobile inspection application has helped streamline the labor-intensive process of on-site technical inspection, trimming nearly in half the time spent examining cars and recording pertinent data. The paperless procedure, which debuted in September at Chicago, consists of NASCAR officials inputting relevant data into Windows-compatible devices as the cars move through the various stages of inspection. "We're moving faster and our jobs are much easier than they were before," Richard Buck, managing director for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series said. "The inspection app was designed to make the overall process more efficient and it has." Inspectors use the devices for eight different disciplines, from safety and templates to engine inspection, throughout the course of a race weekend. More at NASCAR.com
