Auction to aid Wheldon family going strong It started with a small gesture by Graham Rahal, who wanted to raise money for Dan Wheldon's family by auctioning off his helmet from the IndyCar season finale.
He announced his intentions on Twitter and the response from the motor sports community was immediate and overwhelming. It didn't take Rahal long to realize he alone couldn't handle the outpouring of support for Wheldon, the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner killed in the Oct. 16 race at Las Vegas.
More than $200,000 had been raised by Wednesday, the ninth day of the auction, with many big-ticket items yet to be posted. All proceeds go to a trust fund established by IndyCar for Wheldon's wife and two young sons. Read more & Comment...

Star Mazda champ Vautier looks to fit in After the shine of being a series champion starts to fade, reality sets in. Being awarded the scholarship up to the next rung on the Mazda Road to Indy ladder means the winner must settle into a new car, in a new series and compete against veteran drivers. It's like graduating from high school, only to be a freshman all over again in college.
Looking to move quickly past that transition stage is 2011 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear champion Tristan Vautier.
Vautier got to spend some time in a Firestone Indy Lights car on Oct. 28-29 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and exceeded expectations when he set the fastest lap of the two-day session by more than a half-second while driving for Andretti Autosport. Read more & Comment...

$25 million lawsuit filed in Reno air race crash A Texas physician who lost her husband when a vintage plane crashed into the tarmac at the Reno National Championship Air Races, killing 11 and injuring about 70, filed a $25 million wrongful death lawsuit Tuesday in Texas state court.
The suit, the first to be filed after the Sept. 16 crash, claims the Reno Air Racing Association’s conduct was “motivated out of a drive for profit and a disregard for safety” making it guilty of negligence.
The suit was filed in the Collin County, Texas, District Court by Houston-based lawyer Anthony Buzbee on behalf of Dr. Sezen Altug, wife of Craig Salerno, who was killed instantly in the Sept. 16 crash.
“It’s pretty obvious that the promoters of this event realized it was dangerous and even though they were involved in inspecting the aircraft, they did not take adequate precautions to protect spectators, or let the spectators know what the real risks were,” Buzbee said. Read more & Comment...

Unemployment in NASCAR on rise With a wave of recent announcements from various teams, it appears as though there will be a significant rise in the unemployment rate of NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers. These announcements are coming not only from smaller and less successful teams but also from the behemoth mega-teams who have proven race winning records.
Since the economy is not showing the signs of recovery that many corporations would like, they are scaling back on what might be considered frivolous spending. And with the rates demanded by Sprint Cup teams, sponsorship is one of those expenses easily written off.
In just the most recent days, Roush Fenway Racing has stated their intention to scale back from four cars to three in 2012. Package deliverer UPS, sponsor of RFR’s #6 Ford, will become an associate backer of Carl Edwards’ #99 rather than a primary sponsor. Read more & Comment...

Patrick Carpentier's new career Newly retired race car driver Patrick Carpentier will be returning to his hometown of Joliette (in Canada) as a new partner of Construction Danam Bonzaï, a company that builds single family homes and multiplexes. A Las Vegas resident for many years, Carpentier had already begun a second career in home renovations, but couldn't refuse the offer made to him by Ray "Junior" Courtemanche of Construction Danam Bonzai. The new partners will now be working on a $45 million, 210 unit, condominium complex located less than a km from highways 31 and 158.
"The negotiations began during the NAPA 200 in August," said the 27-year race car driving veteran. "When Ray "Junior" Courtemanche., a driver himself with the NASCAR Canadian Tire series, came to me with this amazing offer, we talked about all the possibilities and quickly came to an agreement.
"It was a great opportunity for Anick, our two kids and I to return to Québec and to my hometown," added Carpentier. "I decided to team up with Construction Danam Bonzaï because of their industry expertise and their solid reputation, as evidenced by the Maitre batisseur awards and distinctions they've earned in the Luxury Home and Condominium categories. The Joliette project is off to a good start and we're developing another project in the Montreal area: inter-generational homes in an exclusive area with a one-of-a-kind cachet. Comment

Roush Fenway Closes in on 300 NASCAR Wins Roush Fenway Racing moves into this weekend’s NASCAR showdown at Texas Motor Speedway not only holding the point lead in both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series standings, but looking to close the deal on its 300th NASCAR win. Roush Fenway swept both Texas races (NNS and Cup) in the spring, and standing at win number 298 a similar performance this weekend would give the organization the milestone 300th victory in NASCAR.
“It’s a great honor if we are able to achieve 300 wins in NASCAR,” said Roush Fenway co-owner Jack Roush. “Certainly we had hoped when we started the race team in 1988 that we would win our share of the races. MLR71 is the first new entry for the 2012 Auto GP season
 |
Michele LaRosa | The start of the 2012 season is still far away, but there's a new entry already for Auto GP: it's MLR71, a new team founded by Italian businessman Michele La Rosa purposely to enter the Series. Despite being a "newborn", MLR71 has some very ambitious plans: the team aims to field three cars on the grid for next season, a choice that proved to be a successful one already for teams like DAMS and Campos Racing.
The team's ambition will be supported by a top-notch technical staff led by Franco Sighinolfi, a technical director with broad experience in both single-seaters and Sportscars. The team first official commitment will happen as early as tomorrow, as the outfit will take part in the Magione testing sessions with two cars and four drivers. One car will be driven by La Rosa himself and by Giacomo Ricci, who was called to provide a good technical feedback thanks to his GP2 experience. Read more & Comment...

Big changes for '12 Ferrari California
 |
2012 Ferrari California | Ferrari is set to revise its California for 2012, giving it some pretty impressive changes under the skin The Ferrari California has been with us since 2008 and despite objections from the purists out there, it’s been a major sales success for the brand. It’s helped to draw buyers who would normally buy Aston Martins, Porsches and Bentleys to Ferrari and now it’s time for a bit of a mid-life makeover.
The 2012 California will get a fairly decent overhaul in 2012 and the revised version could go on sale as January. The bodywork will remain largely unchanged but there will be a few new details available, including an optional silver grille.
All of the big changes will take place under the skin and will give the California more power and less weight.

First official Subaru BRZ images
 |
Subaru BZR | After months and months of teasers and spy shots, Subaru has released the first official images of its BRZ coupe
Subaru has been teasing us with its BRZ coupe for ages. A couple of teaser pictures here and there and spy shots are all we’ve had, but now the Japanese firm has released the first official pictures of the car.
Sibling to the Toyota FT-86, more and more information about which is being leaked every day, the Subaru BRZ boasts an incredibly low centre of gravity and that should make it a handling gem. This is in part thanks to its rear-wheel-drive layout, which allows for lower mounting of the two-liter boxer mill than Subaru’s usual all-wheel-drive systems can accommodate. Read more & Comment...

The hard reality is finally sinking in UPDATE A reader adds, Dear AR1.com, Don’t forget that much of the 1.5 mile oval pack racing created by Barnhart and T. George wasn’t just to created to emulate NASCAR, it was just as much a marketing ploy to attract the casual sports fan as well.
Does everyone remember how the IRL constantly touted their close finishes? They would send out PR stuff all the time comparing how much closer their finishes were compared to those in ChampCar, F1, and NASCAR. They would push it like crazy to try and attract the casual fan to this “exciting” form of racing that always yielded such close finishes. Keeping track and promoting their top 5 closest finishes was never left out of any IRL broadcast. Read more & Comment...

Team bosses baffled by sponsors’ snub in India
 |
F1 does not yet resonate with India companies | The indifference shown by the majority of India’s deep–pocketed corporates towards Formula One has baffled team bosses who expect them to warm to the sport following the success of last weekend’s inaugural Indian Grand Prix.
The teams are mostly happy with F1’s newest hosts and believe they have chanced upon a huge untapped market in one of the world’s fastest growing economies.
“We wanted to also attract Indian companies and it is surprising that there are not many, as yet, in F1, although from the financial potential they are very much capable of doing it,” Sauber chief executive Monisha Kaltenborn said. Read more & Comment...

Hendrick released from hospital with broken rib, shoulder injury Rick Hendrick suffered a broken rib and a broken shoulder when the brakes of a Hendrick Motorsports plane failed on landing and the small jet ran off the end of the runway and into a fence at Key West International Airport on Monday night.

Rick Hendrick's plane runs off runway UPDATE #2 A small jet carrying the owner of NASCAR's top team and his wife lost its brakes and crash landed at a Key West, Fla., airport Monday evening, and the couple suffered minor injuries, officials said. According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the pilot and co-pilot radioed that the plane had no brakes upon landing in Key West. Horton said the plane ran off the runway, and then 100 feet beyond a 600-foot safety area that was finished in May. "If we hadn't done that, it likely would have been a different story," Horton said of the safety area that is meant as a runway overrun space. The National Transportation and Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash. Associated Press/ESPN

Haug: Happy with progress as team eyes 2012 Norbert Haug, while admitting that a result such as fifth and sixth places in the Indian Grand Prix is by no means the target for Mercedes GP, does add that the improved form is promising as the Brackley-based team looks on to next season.
After the squad claimed both world titles as Brawn GP in 2009, Nico Rosberg racked up three podium finishes in 2010 although neither he nor team-mate Michael Schumacher have been able to reach the rostrum this year.
“A strong result for our team, considering the possibilities that our technical package currently has,” Haug, Mercedes’ Vice President for Motorsport, said of Sunday’s Indian Grand Prix. “It is satisfying for everybody to extract the maximum and to achieve the best possible result. Our lap times looked consistent throughout the race, which shows that we handled the tires well and found a setup which suited the track.” Read more & Comment...

Vickers retaliates against Kenseth at M'Ville
 |
Vickers spins on Sunday and was more than happy to retaliate against Kenseth at end of race. | About the only thing Brian Vickers regrets about his wild race at Martinsville Speedway Sunday is that his retaliation against Matt Kenseth didn’t cause more damage to Kenseth’s car and his championship hopes.
Vickers is not all that concerned that his retaliation against Kenseth impacted the finish of the race. He just wishes Kenseth had not already been running 30th when he chose to take him out.
Beyond that, Vickers believes that four of the five incidents he was involved in weren’t his fault. He left Martinsville frustrated but happy that he drove his heavily damaged car to eighth place before his initial wreck with Kenseth on lap 458 of the Tums Fast Relief 500. Read more & Comment...

Russ Wallace dies UPDATE It is with great sorrow that the Wallace family announces the passing of its patriarch, Russell "Russ" William Wallace, Sr., on October 30, 2011 at Charlotte's Carolinas Medical Center. He was 77 years of age.
Wallace, a determined auto racer, scored over 400 feature race victories on Midwestern short tracks in the 1960s and 1970s, making him one of the region's most feared drivers of the time. He eventually spawned what has become one of racing's most well-known families, including three winners in NASCAR's National Series: Rusty, Mike and Kenny Wallace.
In February, 2011, Russ Wallace's family became the first in NASCAR history to have produced four Daytona 500 competitors. When grandson Steve Wallace qualified for the February event, he broke a longtime tie with the Petty, Allison, Earnhardt and Bodine families. Read more & Comment...

Stewart calls for end of on-track retaliations
 |
Now that he is a team owner he does not believe in retaliation on the race track, which would cost him money. He prefers to bloody a lip or two back in the garage area | Tony Stewart won the Tums Fast Relief 500 thanks to a caution flag that flew when Brian Vickers retaliated against Matt Kenseth, but that doesn’t mean that Stewart thinks such retaliation is right.
Stewart, who intentionally wrecked Brian Vickers earlier this year at Sonoma, has said all season that drivers are showing less and less respect on the track.
Stewart says drivers don’t confront each other personally after an on-track incident because they are afraid of negative media exposure and NASCAR penalties, and that just causes hard feelings to brew and eventually leads to retaliation.
Coupled with NASCAR’s “boys have at it” policy, and Stewart is confused about what is acceptable and what is not. Read more & Comment...

Fuel Injection test Monday at Martinsville UPDATE For the third time this month, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams tested Electronic Fuel Injection on track, as 10 cars churned out laps around the .526-mile paper clip layout at Martinsville Speedway Monday. Teams from Roush Fenway Racing, Penske Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, NEMCO Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, Furniture Row Racing, Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing and two teams from Stewart-Hass Racing participated in Monday's session. This marked the third EFI test for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this month. Previously, teams had tested at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. Plans call for the full implementation of EFI in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beginning with the 2012 season. John Darby, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series director, said today's test "was just one more step in the planning process for EFI." "Since the time we first began testing EFI in July in Kentucky, I think the teams have been able to work through just about all the configurations of race tracks and the different extremes of weather that they will see in 2012," said Darby. "At Kentucky it was brutally hot and the teams were faced with the extreme heat and this morning it was 30 degrees here at Martinsville, so they've been able to test this system under a variety of conditions." NASCAR
10/28/11 The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will test Electronic Fuel Injection at Martinsville Speedway as research and development continues leading up to the full implementation of EFI in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for the 2012 season. Cars will be on track Monday, October 31 from 10am - 4 pm/et. Currently nine teams have entered for the test. Those include teams from Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, Penske Racing, Roush Fenway Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, Furniture Row Racing, NEMCO Motorsports and Stewart-Haas Racing (2) NASCAR

A call for Hulman George family to sell Speedway and IndyCar In this article Michael Knight calls Randy Bernard's position as CEO of IndyCar untenable and he goes on to spell out all the other ills wrong with the series. He then says the Hulman George families ownership of the Speedway and the IndyCar series as also untenable and calls for them to be sold to either International Speedway Corp., Speedway Motorsports Inc., Roger Penske (who he assumes would unload the series and sign a very long-term contract of cooperation binding the Speedway to the series), John Menard, and an investment group including Tony George. There are other possibilities: The Walt Disney Co. (ESPN), some form of state of Indiana-private sector partnership, the group that owns Formula One's commercial rights (run by Bernie Ecclestone), one of the private equity firms interested in sports/entertainment, maybe even Donald J. Trump (he can't be serious on this one).
Whether you agree or disagree with his analysis, you will find it an interesting read, and rather credible. Comment

Knaus told Johnson to wreck car if he won at Talladega UPDATE #3 See related rumor.
 |
Rick Hendrick | 10/31/11 Hendrick Motorsports team owner Rick Hendrick believes crew chief Chad Knaus was just being cautious when he made the now-infamous remark to driver Jimmie Johnson that he should intentionally damage his car if he won the race at Talladega Superspeedway last week. "It's one of those deals where I wish he hadn't said it because I think he's just nervous about the inspection process being so tight," Hendrick said. "But at the end of the day, I looked at where we were at the end of the race and I thought, 'If we had an advantage, it was a piss-poor showing. I look at that as one of those things where you're mic'd all the time and you're just making a comment. I'm not even sure he knew what he was doing." Scene Daily

Ragan wants to stay in Cup, but open to Nationwide ride
 |
David Ragan | David Ragan believes he likely will compete in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series in 2012. For whom he will be driving, though, has yet to be determined. UPS, Ragan's current primary sponsor on the Roush Fenway Racing #6 Ford, announced earlier this week that the company would scale back it's racing program next season. Minus funding, Ragan said Saturday he isn't sure in which direction his career is headed. While he's hopeful that funding can be found that will allow him to remain at Roush Fenway, Ragan knows the odds are less than favorable. But he says he's "confident" that he will run in Cup.
"With a competitive team," he said.
"I'm not going to be in a back-marker car just to say I'm driving a Sprint Cup car," Ragan, who won his first Cup race at Daytona in July, said.
"I'm not too proud to go back to the Nationwide Series and contend for a championship. Ragan, 25, is under contract to Roush Fenway for 2012, meaning Roush could "loan" the driver to another Ford organization next season. But he said it's not a given that he would end up with a Ford team. Scene Daily Comment
