  • Noted that competent people are exploring the possibility of a race in Western Canada.
  • Said he didn't know of any discussion about returning to Watkins Glen.

Boston Mayor becoming upset with Indycar officials
A week after unveiling its 2016 schedule, the IndyCar Series has hit what could be a major pothole.

The Boston Herald is reporting that Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh is giving IndyCar Series officials and their race promoter two weeks to finalize deals with Massachusetts state agencies needed to run a street race on Labor Day weekend. If that doesn’t happen, the race could be scuttled, the Herald is reporting.

"Please be advised that the mayor grows increasingly concerned with the progress (or lack thereof) of those discussions," said an email from Walsh’s chief of operations, Patrick Brophy, to Jim Freudenberg, chief commercial officer for the Grand Prix of Boston, that was obtained by the Herald.

Hamlin Reacts to Kenseth Suspension
Denny Hamlin
Denny Hamlin
Following NASCAR’s announcement Tuesday evening that it has suspended NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES driver Matt Kenseth for two races, NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES driver Denny Hamlin, teammate of Kenseth, called in to FS1’s NASCAR RACE HUB exclusively to share with co-hosts Adam Alexander and Danielle Trotta his thoughts on the suspension.  Below is a transcript of Hamlin’s comments:

On his reaction to the suspension:

"I probably am more confused after than I was before. You know they (NASCAR) digest a lot, and they are the parent figure within our organization and tell us what the rules are. We try to play by them every week. Sometimes those rules are gray and we don’t know what the penalties are each week, and I think it’s kind of more in that line right now."

My Mazda Road to Indy: Felix Serralles
Felix Juan Serralles IV
Felix Juan Serralles IV
With racing in his blood, Felix Juan Serralles IV knew at a very young age that he wanted to be a race car driver. He took a circuitous route that included four years of competition in Europe before returning to North America at the beginning of 2015 to contest Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires. Serralles earned his first series victory on that most American of racetracks, the oval - a brand of track Serralles happily terms "scary" - and hopes to use that as a springboard to additional success in 2016.

Serralles, 23, grew up in Ponce, Puerto Rico, home to the Don Q rum distillery founded by his ancestors in 1865. Racing history runs deep in the family. His grandfather raced karts and boats, while his father was a national motocross champion and two-time world champion powerboat racer. Naturally, young Felix joined in nearly as soon as he could walk.

Video: Boston Mayor: 'IndyCar is not the Olympics'
Taxpayers may be footing part of the bill for an expensive sporting event in Boston. There has NEVER been a street race that was financially sound unless the city contributed to the cost of street improvements. If race organizers have to foot the full bill, it's likely the race will eventually go belly-up.  However, this race has huge potential for IndyCar.

There are more than 100 colleges and universities in the greater Boston, Massachusetts area. These include technical schools, art schools, liberal arts schools, major research institutions and many more. With all the colleges in Boston the students will be back in town and if they market it correctly, this event could be a big college party and should be able to draw upwards of 100,000 on race day.  Just make sure there's plenty of beer and lots of live music.  Mark C. reporting for AR1.com

The rednecks are buying tickets in droves hoping to see a good dust-up in Texas between Logano and Kenseth

Texas Motor Speedway hosts the Sprint Cup Series AAA Texas 500 on Sunday, and track President Eddie Gossage said that the venue experienced its "highest ticket sales on the Sunday before race weekend" in part due to the Matt Kenseth-Joey Logano incident last weekend at Martinsville, according to Drew Davison of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM.

Gossage said, "It was a record night for us, and this is not the time when you usually sell a bunch of tickets. It was a big night. ... They want to see what happens next." Davison notes fans are "interested to see how NASCAR handles the latest incident," in which Kenseth appeared to intentionally wreck Logano as payback for Logano wrecking Kenseth two weeks earlier.

It was so dark they had to shine a light on the track for the fans to see Gordon celebrate
NASCAR officials discussed ending Sunday's race at Martinsville Speedway because of darkness, a series official told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Monday.

Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer, told "The Morning Drive" that officials had conversations toward the end of the race of what to do should the race be extended by a lengthy caution or a green-white-checkered.

The race started at 1:24pm/et. Sunday marked the end of daylight savings time. That meant the sun set in Martinsville at 5:24pm/et. With overcast skies, it grew darker quicker. Martinsville Speedway is one of four tracks in the Chase that does not have lights. Eighteen cautions and a red flag of 12 minutes and 46 seconds after Matt Kenseth intentionally wrecked Joey Logano, pushed the end of the race close sunset.

NASCAR gets what it wants
NASCAR "continues to get exactly what it wants with a Chase for the Sprint Cup format that fosters an extreme degree of intensity rarely seen this often in the sport's history." But "is that really what stock car racing should be at its highest level?" USA TODAY

Kyle Busch says NASCAR shows favoritism
Does the name of a driver or drivers involved have an impact on penalties issued by NASCAR?

Kyle Busch says it does. Busch believes NASCAR concerns itself more with the driver involved than the violation that occurred. Busch, who has had plenty of run-ins with NASCAR over on-track incidents in his career, was asked Sunday his opinion about Kenseth's actions toward Logano. "Did he do anything wrong? I don't know. Did he do anything right? I don't know," Busch said.

"I think it all depends on whose name's above the door on whether or not you're allowed to do it." Busch said he wasn't sure NASCAR needed to necessarily curtail any of the actions taking place in recent races, but needed to enforce its rules consistently.

Patrick tried to take Gilliland out and took herself out instead
Danica Patrick says she was "repaying the favor" when she ran into David Gilliland with less than 100 laps left in Sunday's race at Martinsville Speedway.

Patrick hit the wall to bring out the caution on Lap 158 after being hit from behind by Gilliland. Patrick was upset on the radio and said "no matter what I do, he is (in trouble)." Later during the race, she ran near Gilliland but didn't know it was him because he's in a special paint scheme. After passing Gilliland, she was told that was his car.

Patrick responded: "Damn it, I was meaning to take him out. I'll have to next time." Patrick ran into the back of Gilliland about 250 laps after their first incident. Patrick's car was too damaged to continue. "He unnecessarily, I thought, took me out at the beginning of the race," Patrick told NASCAR Talk. "So I was just repaying the favor." NBC Sports

(GMM)  After eight years in formula one as Force India, the Silverstone based team could change its name ahead of the 2016 season.

The Mercedes engines, meanwhile, would also be rebranded as Aston Martin, thanks to the close relationship between the two carmakers outside of F1.

Ford Fusion to get slightly different look in 2016
The Ford Fusion used for competition in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series is expected to have a slightly different look for 2016, with changes to the front and sides of the car. Officials with the Detroit-based automaker have not announced any changes, but at least one driver has acknowledged that the modifications are forthcoming. During an open test Thursday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Richard Petty Motorsports driver Aric Almirola noted that his team was "trying to really focus on what we need for our balance for this 2016 package, and it's not really a great gauge for us because this (car) is still the 2015 Ford Fusion. We actually have a new nose and some new sides coming for next year with a new 2016 Ford Fusion," he said. "(I'm) pretty excited about that. I've heard early reports of some good things. I'm excited about getting that on the race track next season."
