FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), LMP1 test in Barcelona/Spain
Porsche 919 testing
Porsche 919 testing

The Porsche Team is offering three young drivers the opportunity to test the innovative Le Mans Prototype Porsche 919 Hybrid at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Mitch Evans (21, New Zealand), Kevin Magnussen (23, Denmark) and Oliver Turvey (28, Great Britain) are sharing one car. Porsche works driver and championship leader Timo Bernhard (34, Germany) is the driver who will be their reference point at the track.

Team Principal Andreas Seidl explained: "We are a young team with a highly complex race car. For us it is always exciting and informative when drivers share their first experiences with the 919 Hybrid. The feedback is sometimes very detailed and individual. We regularly scan various motorsport categories for strong drivers, inside and outside the Porsche family. We are really pleased our test program has allowed us to invite these three drivers to Barcelona. Before this, they visited Weissach in October to prepare for this."

The JGR Toyotas may face penalties
The Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas driven by Denny Hamlin (11), Kyle Busch (18) and Carl Edwards (19) were all forced to surrender their front splitters and replace them with ones that were unaltered as the cars rolled through pre-race inspection for the AAA Texas 500. NASCAR officials said the confiscated carbon-fiber splitters, "did not fit the gauges" and would be taken back to the NASCAR R&D Center in Concord, N.C. for further scrutiny. The splitter on the No. 20 car being driven by Erik Jones, who is subbing for the suspended Matt Kenseth, did not have any issues.

Edwards' crew chief, Darian Grubb, was angry as he spoke briefly to Kickin' the Tires and confirmed NASCAR was forcing them to change the splitters.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. losing pit crew members to JGR
Dale Earnhardt said in July that one of the keys to Greg Ives replacing Steve Letarte as crew chief in 2015 was the rest of his crew wouldn't change.

Well, that's not exactly what will happen.

Earnhardt will lose his car chief as well as at least three of his over-the-wall crew members. His car chief has his blessing, considering Jason Burdett will move to JR Motorsports to crew chief an Xfinity Series car for Regan Smith.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R crowned as Road & Track Performance Car
In their annual contest, the guys from Road & Track named the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R as most impressive performance car of this year.

Howling engines and smoking tires are the salt and pepper of any Performance Car of the Year contest. It couldn’t be otherwise as guys from Road & Track had on their hands cars like Bentley Continental GT3-R, Cadillac ATS-V, Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Dodge Viper ACR, Ferrari 488 GTB, Mercedes-AMG GT S, and Porsche Cayman GT4. But the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R came on top, according to them. "With a flat-plane crank and Sport Cup 2 tires, the GT350R is a Mustang turned up to 11," said Larry Webster, editor-in-chief of Road & Track. "Not only does the car have soul and harness so much firepower with such ease, but the real achievement here is that it’s so approachable. It’s a car you can’t help but love."

VW struggling to keep dealers happy as scandal widens
Volkswagen AG's goodwill offer of $1,000 to the owners of cars caught in the emissions scandal comes as the company wages a behind-the-scenes effort to soothe another powerful constituency: its U.S. dealers.

The company is offering cash and no-interest loans to its roughly 650 dealerships that are stuck with cars that can't be sold but are taking up precious space in their lots. It is also encouraging dealers to offer pre-scandal prices on trade-ins and promising to make up the difference in value.

'Client engine' divides opinions of F1 insiders
(GMM)  The proposal to make F1 a two-tier engine formula has divided opinions among the sport's insiders.

Bernie Ecclestone and Jean Todt are reportedly hand-in-hand on the plan, which was triggered when Ferrari exercised its controversial veto against the idea of a price cap for customer engines.

So the new plan is to push through a parallel set of regulations, with an independent supplier like Ilmor or Cosworth going head-to-head with the existing 'power units' but with a more affordable, IndyCar-like twin-turbo V6.

Alonso 'still sees progress' at McLaren
Alonso sees progress but are competitors making progress even faster?

Fernando Alonso is adamant McLaren-Honda is still making progress "in every area", though the Spaniard labels these improvements "small".

Alonso nearly suffered a no-show on race day at Mexico because of a faulty MGU-H, and retired his MP4-30 at the end of the first lap. Perhaps even more worrying for the double world champion and team-mate Jenson Button was the fact that both remained quite off the pace despite using an upgraded power unit.

"We knew Mexico would be tough, and many of Interlagos' characteristics are similar, with its steep sections and long straights," Alonso said in the McLaren-Honda's Brazilian Grand Prix preview. "However, the circuit is incredible to drive and always a lot of fun, so I’m looking forward to the weekend.

Several teams have tire problems at Texas
The Goodyears were exploding in Texas
The Goodyears were exploding in Texas
When Sunday's race got under way on Sunday afternoon, it did not take long for tire issues to pop up. Chase driver Joey Logano was running fourth in the opening laps of the race when his left-rear tire exploded, going down the backstretch. The shredded tire destroyed the left-rear quarter panel of the car, brought out the first caution of the day and took the Team Penske driver out of contention. On Lap 36, reigning series champion Kevin Harvick also had a flat left-rear tire, but the car did not suffer any damage. With just 54 laps to go, Harvick had another flat tire -- this time it was the left rear. Harvick was forced to give up the second spot to hit pit road. Crew chief Rodney Childers determined Harvick ran over a piece of debris on both occasions.

In IndyCar races, cities see mixed outcomes
The Grand Prix of Long Beach, Calif., which was founded in 1975, is expected to draw about 175,000 people in April. The estimated economic impact for the event is $35 million
The Grand Prix of Long Beach, Calif., which was founded in 1975, is expected to draw about 175,000 people in April. The estimated economic impact for the event is $35 million

The annual Grand Prix of Long Beach, Calif., has over its 40 years become one of the country's most successful street races, as well as one of the community's biggest events, now woven into city tradition.

In Baltimore, on the other hand, a brief experimentation with IndyCar beginning in 2011 was marred with complaints, court action, and financial trouble, despite reasonably strong attendance numbers for the races.

Street races can fill hotels and restaurants with tourists and their wallets, according to officials in other IndyCar race towns. But they can also bring inconvenience to residents and businesses near the racecourse, which has to be managed with meticulous planning.

Whether the influx of tourists -- and their money -- outweighs the inevitable inconveniences to locals has been the subject of a sometimes passionate debate in Boston this year after Mayor Martin J. Walsh signed a deal to bring an IndyCar race to the Seaport District next Labor Day weekend.

McLaren bleeding millions due to F1 losses (Update) UPDATE
McLaren is bleeding money because Ron Dennis dropped superior Mercedes engines in favor of Honda
British engineering and technology firm McLaren "revealed that it reversed" from a $19M net profit to a $24.6M net loss last year on revenue "which was down slightly" at $412.3M, according to Christian Sylt for FORBES.

The fall in profits was driven by a downturn in the performance of its Formula 1 team "after it lost British superstar Lewis Hamilton to rival Mercedes."

The McLaren Technology Group, which changed its name from McLaren Group earlier this year, "owns stakes in 18 companies." They include "a motorsport electronics firm, catering company Absolute Taste, an applied technology business and 3.7% of supercar manufacturer McLaren Automotive."

Rossi says Marquez let Lorenzo win so fellow Spaniard could be champion

Lorenzo leads Marquez - was Marquez holding back to deny Rossi the title?
Valentino Rossi criticised Marc Marquez's behaviour as "unbelievable" and says that the situation is "embarrassing" for the sport after he lost out on the 2015 MotoGP title to team-mate Jorge Lorenzo.

Rossi has claimed repeatedly that Marquez has been assisting Lorenzo's title bid and in Valencia the Honda rider remained behind his compatriot throughout the 30-lap race, without challenging for the lead.

Rossi recovered from the back of the grid to finish in fourth place, but Lorenzo's victory enabled him to clinch a third MotoGP crown.

Rossi is sure that Marquez was protecting race leader Lorenzo and says such a scenario is "very, very bad news" for MotoGP.

NASCAR's confusing messages, unrelenting pressure make Chase volatile, dangerous
Perhaps only the executives who sit in the ivy-covered towers, figuratively speaking, in Daytona did not see this coming.

After the Kansas incident between Matt Kenseth and Joey Logano in the final moments of the race, payback from Kenseth was in Logano's future.

Maybe Kenseth was too obvious at Martinsville on Sunday. His pile-driving move, when he was multiple laps off the pace, sent Logano into the wall and ended the younger man's day.

Weekend USA TV Ratings (2nd Update) UPDATE #2
NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Martinsville drew a 2.0 'final' rating and 3.3 million viewers on NBCSN Sunday afternoon, down 20% in ratings and 18% in viewership from last year (2.5, 4.1M) and down 26% and 22%, respectively, from 2013 (2.7, 4.3M), both on ESPN. Ratings and viewership were the lowest for the fall Martinsville race since at least 2000, falling below the previous lows of 2.4 (twice) and 3.6 million (2012). As recently as 2005, it had a 4.7 and 7.1 million on the NBC broadcast network. The race completed an inauspicious debut for NASCAR's new cable partners NBCSN and Fox Sports 1, as all 19 Sprint Cup races on cable this season hit either a record-low or the lowest marks in over a decade.
