Ocon and Verstappen tangle costing the Red Bull driver the win

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has said Esteban Ocon was "lucky" to get away with a push from his driver Max Verstappen after the pair clashed during the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Verstappen had been leading the race from Lewis Hamilton when the lapped Force India of Ocon, on newer and faster tires, caught Verstappen at Turn 1. In an attempt to unlap himself, Ocon collided with the Dutchman, causing Verstappen to spin which allowed Hamilton through to take the lead.

FIM Announces New MotoGP Helmet Standard
Is this a way for the helmet manufacturers to all make more money by forcing all riders to buy new helmets?
Is this a way for the helmet manufacturers to all make more money by forcing all riders to buy new helmets?
FIM-homologated helmets will be mandatory beginning in 2019 for all riders participating in Grand Prix competition--MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3. The new rating system will supersede current ECE, JIS, and Snell certifications used by AGV, Arai, Bell, HJC, Shark, Shoei, 6D, and others.

According to the FIM, helmets submitted for certification will undergo “an enhanced and more complete” performance evaluation. This reportedly includes assessing protection for various low, medium, and high-speed impacts, as well as penetration.

Vettel gets reprimand instead of penalty

Vettel
Vettel
Sebastian Vettel’s bank account will be 25,000 Euros worse off on Saturday evening, after the German was handed a hefty fine for an unusual incident at the weighbridge during qualifying in Brazil.

The Ferrari star qualified on the front row behind the man who beat him to the 2018 drivers’ title, Lewis Hamilton, during a rain-hit session at Interlagos, but was subsequently called to the stewards to explain himself after being accused of ‘destroying’ the scales the FIA use to weigh cars during the session.

Vettel over a sandbagging Hamilton in 3rd Brazil practice
Can Vettel hold off the Mercedes in qualifying?
Can Vettel hold off the Mercedes in qualifying?

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel turned a lap of 1m07.948s to top the final practice for the Brazilian GP. However, Vettel has topped 10 final practices this year only to have the sandbagging Hamilton beat him for pole in qualifying.

Hamilton's Aldo Costa designed Mercedes was 0.217s behind and Vettel in 2nd, but we suspect he will take pole when it counts in a couple of hours time.

After seeing Mercedes romp to a one-two finish in FP2 on Friday, Vettel and the Ferrari team were able to strike back in final practice but he gained on Hamilton in the final sector which is mostly full throttle. It is obvious Mercedes had their engine turned down.

Vettel’s 1m 07.948s represented a new track record at Interlagos.

Hamilton had a scare early in the session after smoke was spotted coming from the rear of his car. Mercedes soon diagnosed this as being due to a dislodged breather pipe, which was quickly resolved.

Valtteri Bottas was third in the second Mercedes 0.517 seconds back.

The Indianapolis Motor Hall of Fame Speedway Museum has been more a classic-car showroom than a museum.

So its board has launched an ambitious strategy to upgrade the over 60-year old.

Plans are in the early stages and if they come to fruition, the revamped museum will be nearly twice as large, with a 3-D theater, elevated cars, interactive digital experiences, racing simulators, and virtual- and augmented-reality displays reports IBJ.com. Portions of see-through flooring might even give visitors a peek at what has until now been a secretive collection in the vault-like basement.

Esteban Ocon

In a strange yet understandable move, it has emerged that Esteban Ocon turned down a chance to secure a drive, albeit away from F1, for 2019. The Frenchman was reportedly high on the list for Schmidt Peterson Motorsport and Dane Coyne Racing in the IndyCar series.

Ocon, who is unsure of an F1 drive next year, did not want to be away from the sport because he would lose the feel for it. “There has been talks that I could race in many different places and I won’t go in details. But we are choosing not to do that,” he said.

Bottas quickest in session that focused on race setups and tire wear

Valtteri Bottas led the time sheets in second practice for the Brazilian GP, beating his newly-crowned teammate Lewis Hamilton by just 0.003s around Interlagos while Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was just 0.07s further back.

The session had only been running for 10 minutes when Nico Hulkenberg pushed the limits too far coming out of the final turn at Juncao, the German driver getting onto the grass before his Renault slammed into the guard rail, smashing up the right side of his R.S.18 and bringing out a brief red flag. Fortunately, Hulkenberg emerged from the car seemingly unhurt, although he will have been frustrated to lose out on FP2’s key track time.
