Chevrolet Wins NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Manufacturers' Championship
With the conclusion of the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Chevrolet clinched the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Manufacturers' Championship. It marks the 12th consecutive year and 38th time overall that the Bowtie Brand has won the prestigious title in NASCAR's premiere series. It is the second Manufacturers' award for the Chevrolet SS race car. "Winning the Manufacturers' championship is one of the goals we set at the beginning of every season," said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President, Performance Vehicles and Motorsports.

"This championship is the result of great teamwork by the owners, drivers, crew chiefs, crews and technical partners. Special thanks to the Chevrolet powertrain team, along with the engine shops at Hendrick Motorsports and Earnhardt-Childress Racing for delivering the right combination of power, fuel economy, and reliability throughout the entire season. Congratulations to everyone who has made this special achievement possible for Chevrolet."

Kobayashi's teammate unclear for Caterham return
(GMM)  Caterham's administrators have reappointed Kamui Kobayashi to contest the 2014 finale in Abu Dhabi next weekend.

The beleaguered backmarker team missed Austin and Brazil amid its high-profile fight for survival, but a controversial crowdfunding scheme means the green cars will be back for the last race of the season.

Prior to the team entering administration, there had been doubt Japanese Kobayashi would race again for Caterham.

The now-departed Colin Kolles-led management is believed to have fallen out with the 28-year-old after the team's last appearance in Russia, when Kobayashi retired from the race.

Lotterer turns down Caterham
Andre Lotterer turns down Caterham
AUTOSPORT revealed on Saturday that the 32-year-old had been asked if he would contest the Yas Marina event with the British team, which remains in administration, and that he was still undecided about the offer.

Lotterer has now told AUTOSPORT that he has decided to forgo the chance, which follows on from his F1 debut in a Caterham-Renault CT05 at the Belgian GP at Spa in August.

"I'm flattered because you don't get the call to do F1 every day," said the Audi World Endurance Championship driver.

"The one-off at Spa was a great thing for me to do, but to do more would have to have been in a better situation - I don't want to be a guy driving around at the back.

Wolff: F1 Title loser will get another shot in the future

You can't lose with our cars

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has reassured his two drivers that whoever loses out in the year's title race will get another chance of championship success later in their career - next year because Mercedes cars will still be superior.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will arrive in Abu Dhabi next weekend battling for the championship after a year of Mercedes dominance. Hamilton leads Rosberg by 17 points, but with double points on offer he has to finish in the top two to make sure he wins the title. Meanwhile, Rosberg will be aiming for victory in the hope Hamilton finishes third or lower.

Nevertheless, Wolff is sure that whoever loses this year will get another shot at the title in the years to come and drew a comparison with 1984 when Niki Lauda won his third title by half a point over Alain Prost.

Felix Rosenqvist masters Macau
Felix Rosenqvist
His year in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship may not have brought entirely what he had hoped for, but Felix Rosenqvist (Kashbet.com by Mucke Motorsport) still concluded the season in style by winning the 61th running of the prestigious Suncity Group Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix. In a 15-lap race that was interrupted following a pile-up on the opening lap, Rosenqvist made most of his pole position, steered clear of any problems and led all the way from lights to flag.

With victory in his fifth attempt in Macau, he became only the second Swede to win the classic race on the challenging Guia street circuit after Rickard Rydell in 1992. After a thrilling battle in the closing stages of the race, Rosenqvist's Austrian team-mate Lucas Auer (kfzteile24 Mucke Motorsport) managed to overtake New Zealand's Nick Cassidy (ThreeBond with T-Sport) and thus completed the 1-2 for Mucke Motorsport. Cassidy came home third from Spanish F3 returnee Roberto Merhi (W66.com Double R Racing) and Canadian Nicholas Latifi (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema).

But German Vettel let the cat out of the bag last weekend in Brazil whilst filling out a fun questionnaire for the Italian broadcaster Sky.

Asked the question "Sebastian Vettel is", the 27-year-old completed the sentence with the hand-written answer "A driver for Scuderia Ferrari".

Battery powered Formula E faces acid test
Silent cars don't cut it for 99% of race fans
The motor-racing formula which FIA president Jean Todt has chosen to promote far more than Formula One is already facing its acid test after just one race.

Next weekend sees the second outing for the bold new all-electric Formula E motor racing championship, on the streets of Malaysia's Putrajaya, a crucial opportunity for this relatively slow, silent form of racing to prove that it is more than just a glorified battery test.

September's first race in Beijing was a qualified success, making headlines only because of a spectacular last-corner crash and rollover involving Alain Prost's son Nicolas and Nick Heidfeld.

Jeff Gordon supportive of new Chase
Despite being left out of the final round, Jeff Gordon is supportive of the new Chase format
From Autosport -- Jeff Gordon has thrown his support behind NASCAR's new Chase format, despite being controversially eliminated from championship contention at Phoenix last weekend.

Gordon believed second at Phoenix would be enough to secure progression to the four-car battle for the crown at Homestead, but an aggressive pass by Ryan Newman on Kyle Larson rewarded Newman with 11th place, and just enough points to bump Gordon out of the final Chase round.

Newman's presence in the shootout has raised eyebrows as he is winless in 2014 and the new Chase system was intended to put a stronger emphasis on race victories. Gordon has four wins through the 2014 season; Newman's best result is a third place.

Toyota NSCS: Homestead Qualifying Wrap
Matt Kenseth was the lead Camry in qualifying yesterday at Homestead. The 2003 Sprint Cup Champion says teammate Denny Hamlin is a good pick to win his first title tomorrow
MATT KENSETH, No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Starting Position: 3rd

How strong is your race car for Sunday?

"We just worked on qualifying today so we'll get into race practice a little bit tomorrow.  Then we'll have a little better idea about Sunday.  Today went well -- we had good speed the first lap on the track.  I thought qualifying went pretty good."

Is your team doing anything differently to help Denny Hamlin this weekend?

"It doesn't really change.  We try to help each other as teammates as much as we can all year throughout practice, meetings, information sharing and all that kind of stuff.  I don't think it really changes.  We all want to win when the green flag drops on Sunday.  We all want to get to the front and win the race -- so hopefully all three of our cars will run up front and one of us will be able to get it."

Democrat calls for Busch's head
Jackie Speier D-Calif - Busch is guilty until proven innocent
NASCAR has no plans to sanction Kurt Busch until the police investigation into claims of domestic abuse by a former girlfriend is completed, sanctioning body chairman Brian France said Friday.

France said his organization is gathering information, but it will wait until police in Dover, Del., complete their investigation.

"Well, listen, what's not lost on us by any stretch is the rightful heightened awareness on domestic abuse and violence, and so you can expect our policies to reflect the understandable awareness that that's not going to be tolerated," France said.

SI.com reported Friday that U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., wrote NASCAR and Stewart-Haas Racing, asking for Busch to be suspended from Sunday's season-ending race.

France: "modest to zero" changes Chase format changed planned
For better or worse, Brian France is committed to the 'elimination' Chase
In Brian France's estimation, the new Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup format introduced this year has struck a perfect balance between winning and consistency in determining the series champion. At the same time, France said, the new system, featuring an expanded 16-driver field and eliminations after every third race, has elevated interest in the sport.

"It's exceeded what I had hoped for, and it's done precisely what we thought we wanted to do, which was recalibrate competition-or winning, rather-and still have a strong place for consistency and all the rest, but recalibrate that balance," NASCAR's chairman and CEO said Friday at Homestead-Miami Speedway in his "State of the Sport" question-and-answer session with reporters.

Rosenqvist wins Macau qualifying race
Felix Rosenqvist
Felix Rosenqvist (Kashbet.com by Mucke Motorsport) made the best of his pole position by winning the ten-lap qualifying race for the Suncity Group Macau Grand Prix. In a race that ran behind the safety car for three laps, the 23-year-old Swede won from his Austrian teammate Lucas Auer (kfzteile24 Mucke Motorsport). Tom Blomqvist (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) finished third with the reigning FIA Formula 3 European Champion, Esteban Ocon (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema) rounding out the top four.

Having started from second on the grid, Lucas Auer overtook his Swedish team-mate, benefitting from the slipstream in the run to the first corner and led the field into the notorious Lisboa right-hander. Some drivers had more problems dealing with the first corner, including Spaniard Alex Palou (Fortec Motorsports) who crashed into the tire stacks. Auer built up a two seconds' advantage on the first three laps while Rosenqvist lost second place on lap two to Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing), the Dutchman having made good progress from fifth on the grid in the opening stages of the race.

F1 Teams hit back at Ecclestone attitude
(GMM)  F1 teams have hit back at Bernie Ecclestone's attitude about social media.

In a typically controversial interview on Friday, the F1 chief executive said he sees no value in Facebook and Twitter, and has more interest in marketing the sport to 70-year-olds who have "plenty of cash".

"Young kids will see the Rolex brand, but are they going to go and buy one?  They can't afford it," he told Campaign Asia Pacific.

McLaren responded by posting a photo on Twitter of a little boy wearing replica team overalls, with the hashtag 'McLarenNextGen' and the caption: "We love social media at McLaren and we love young F1 fans too!"

Ecclestone set to drop double points for 2015
Ecclestone wanted double points for final three races
(GMM)  As the double-points finale approaches, Bernie Ecclestone has admitted the controversial scheme will be dropped for 2015.

To keep spice in the title fight until the dying laps of a championship, the double points innovation was introduced at the F1 chief executive's behest.

But it was roundly criticized for being artificial and unfair, and has resulted in Lewis Hamilton having a comfortable 17-point lead heading into Abu Dhabi but still in danger of a mechanical failure allowing Nico Rosberg to win the title by some margin.

"It would put a big shadow over the championship if it was turned by a technical issue," said their Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff.

U.S. Congresswoman calls for Busch to be suspended
(Editor's note: Look, we are well aware that domestic violence is a serious issue. And we are not trying to make light of the allegations that were brought against NASCAR driver Kurt Busch by his former girlfriend Patricia Driscoll. However, there is a formal legal process in place, and in our opinion, it is way inappropriate for a sitting member of Congress -- a law making body, not a law enforcement nor reviewing one -- to compromise a pending legal investigation. Our hope is that the truth, whatever it so happens to be, is revealed and justice ultimately prevails. Sadly, this Congresswoman has used her privileged place as an official elected by law abiding citizens to impede the legal process, and render judgment on a matter she has no business judging. Despicable, if you ask us!)

From the Sporting News -- A U.S. Congresswoman is calling for Kurt Busch to be suspended from Sunday’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway while allegations of domestic assault are being investigated.

Statement from INDYCAR on Brasilia
Autodromo Internacional Nelson Piquet
Yesterday, a report was published in Brazil outlining possible construction delays at the Autodromo Internacional Nelson Piquet in Brasilia, sight of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series opening race.

Of course, it was well known that the facility would need upgrades in advance of the March 8th race. While the translation of the report was not entirely clear, it seemed that a series of complicated contractual disputes had placed those upgrades to the 3.4-mile course on hold. The report also seemed to note that the delays could potentially call the 2015 IndyCar opener into question.

In search of clarification on the matter, AutoRacing1 reached out to INDYCAR.

Below, is a statement regarding the Brasilia race from INDYCAR Director of Communications Mike Kitchel.

New McLaren Honda breaks cover
McLaren today started testing of a new Honda power unit in a modified version of its 2014 Formula One car. The testing took place during a filming day at the Silverstone circuit in the U.K. under strict conditions.

McLaren, along with other teams taking part in the filming day, were only able to drive the car a limited distance and with demonstration tires. However, the test still represents a major step in the development of McLaren’s 2015 F1 car, particularly in the area of packaging and integration.

Honda first confirmed its intention to return to F1 as an engine supplier back in 2013. The Japanese automaker’s new power unit, which was revealed for the first time last month, will be used exclusively by McLaren in the 2015 season.

Industry Leaders say new NASCAR Chase format's Impact very positive
NASCAR's premier series wraps up its season Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway with the conclusion of a revised Chase for the Sprint Cup that has garnered the sport a significant spike in interest. The championship winner -- Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin or Ryan Newman -- will only be NASCAR's second first-time champion since '04, but could the new format still use some tweaks? THE DAILY this week conducted a roundtable with several people intimately involved in the sport to discuss the new format and its future.

Q: What kind of impact -- positive or negative -- has the new format had on NASCAR?

Daytona Int'l Speedway President Joie Chitwood: It's been positive. We're seeing a lot of emotion, we're seeing drivers go for the win. What I focus on is, "Ok, we all have these ideas and you put a plan in place and hope that it lives up to the expectation of what you thought the plan would do." It has been living up to that. You're seeing a little extra drama based on the format. We've seen some really good storylines in the races. What's always nice to see is when the reality lives up to the concept, which is drama as it relates to moving on. All the attention to the sport is going to always help us or help other tracks.
