Indycar reaches agreement with nearby condo residents in Boston
Seaport Lofts
Seaport Lofts
Promoters of an IndyCar race proposed for the Seaport District have reached a deal to appease residents of a condo building on the racecourse, assuaging some of the noisiest critics of the plan to hold the first Grand Prix of Boston next Labor Day weekend.

In exchange for a mitigation package offered by the race promoters, the Seaport Lofts Condominium Association will drop its opposition to the Grand Prix, said Gary Orlacchio, a lawyer who lives in the building at 437 D St. and helped negotiate the deal for the condo association.

The association's trustees have approved the deal, Orlacchio said.

You could count the fans in attendance on two hands
A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, I am watching the WEC finale from Bahrain. The grandstands are all empty. No one bothered to show up. It's a ghost town. Abraham Bernstein

Dear Abraham, The WEC, and sports car racing in general, is a high-tech engineering endeavor by Porsche, Audi and Toyota. There is no human element, hence no fans. Driver talent means very little. Engineering is not a sport, hence the WEC is not a sport, simply an exercise in great engineering. Mark C.

Engel and Mercedes-Benz on pole for the main GT race
Maro Engel (Mercedes-Benz was declared winner of the qualifying event after Stefan Mucke (Aston Martin), who crossed the line in first place, was given a 10-second penalty, so he will start on pole for tomorrow's main race for the FIA GT World Cup.

On lap 8 on the restart of the qualifying race, which had been neutralized, Stefan Mucke made a mistake in his Aston Martin Vantage GT3 that was to cost him dear even though he won in masterly style. He was handed a 10-second penalty by the Stewards as he had suddenly braked in front of Maro Engel (Mercedes-Benz) who had to take avoiding action and just missed hitting the Aston Martin while behind, Edoardo Mortara (Audi) also found himself in a tricky situation.

Ilmor applies for 2017 'client engine' role
UPDATE
Engine will be a higher revving version of this AER P60 twin turbo V6
Engine will be a higher revving version of this AER P60 twin turbo V6

Advanced Engine Research has joined Ilmor Engineering in responding to the FIA's call for expressions of interest for an alternative F1 powerplant for 2017.

The FIA wants an engine of up to 2.5 liters which produces around 650kW (or 870bhp) and does not feature energy recovery.

The call is the first step to issuing a full tender, after which a winner will be chosen. However, it remains to be seen how the required change of rules will be voted through at next week's F1 Commission meeting - although the FIA may yet try to force it through the World Motor Sport Council without getting the majority support of the Commission, on the basis of force majeure.

Lotus says F1 must 'change its business model'
Federico Gastaldi
Federico Gastaldi
Lotus F1 deputy team principal Federico Gastaldi has called for Formula 1 to review its business model and has given a stern warning if certain situations continue the sport will drive fans away.

With Sauber and Force India launching a compliant to the EU about the distribution of wealth in F1 and ongoing worries about the US Grand Prix potentially dropping off the calendar due to funding problems, Gastaldi feels the major parties involved in business decisions - the FIA, F1's commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone and the F1 Strategy Group - need to make changes as he fears problems may only get worse.

Pirelli still pushing for 18" wheels (R) vs today's 13" wheels (L)

Paul Hembery reckons by changing the size of the tires and introducing proper testing Pirelli could lower F1's lap times by "four seconds."

The sport is currently looking into various ways to make F1 cars fast and plan to introduce various changes in 2017.

However, Hembery says Pirelli can achieve that goal for F1 and that it would a lot cheaper than redesigning the cars.

McLaren Honda set to be a backmarker again in 2016
McLaren Honda to stay with same engine design philosphy
McLaren Honda to stay with same engine design philosophy
The new 2016 engine regulations awaiting ratification have two marked changes to their predecessors. Firstly, in season development will again be allowed probably with repeated homologation dates for each upgrade each F1 manufacturer brings. Secondly, certain areas of the power unit which were due to be locked down from redesign until 2020 have been opened up.

This latter regulation clearly allows Renault and Honda the chance to examine any fundamental design flaws with their power units and make the appropriate changes. Renault are yet to announce their participation in Formula One in 2016, and recent comments from Cyril Abiteboul have heightened the fear a Renault could leave F1 in 2016.

Cosworth won't bid for FIA's 2017 F1 engine deal
Kevin Kalkhoven - we have politely declined the opportunity to lose money!

Cosworth Engineering co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven says the company has decided not to pursue the FIA's alternative engine route for 2017 because the costs involved would not justify a development program.

The key issue is that Cosworth would have to start from scratch, as it does not have an engine which could be used as a starting point for an F1 V6 project - in contrast to other known bidders Ilmor and AER, who respectively have IndyCar and LMP1 engines that could form a base.

"We took a look at it and looked at who the potential customers would be," said Kalkhoven, "and the answer is essentially Red Bull, as they don't have a long-term engine contract. Then we looked at the economics of developing an engine from scratch, which is what we would have to do.

GP2: Evans sprints to Sakhir win

Mitch Evans took his second win of the 2015 season in today’s sprint race at Bahrain International Circuit. From P6 on the grid, the RUSSIAN TIME ace was able to move up to the front of the field thanks to a mature drive. He crossed the finish line ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne and Alex Lynn.

When the lights went off, Lynn made a perfect start from reverse pole to lead the rest of the pack into Turn 1. Nobuharu Matsushita had a strong getaway from P7 on the grid and was able to move up to second, but he made light contact with Rio Haryanto into the first corner which sent the Japanese driver into a spin and an early retirement. Haryanto couldn’t make the turn and went wide along with Pierre Gasly. Lynn was then leading from Vandoorne (who also made a lightning start from P8) and Evans.

GP3: Ghiotto triumphant over Ocon in Sakhir Race 2

From left - Ocon, Ghiotto and Parry
After briefly losing the lead to his nemeses Esteban Ocon in a fiercely contested title battle, Luca Ghiotto fought back to take a commanding victory in Sakhir from fourth on the grid. The Italian held a comfortable 2s margin over the Frenchman from ART Grand Prix to return to the head of the Drivers' Standings meaning the championship will be decided at the final round in Abu Dhabi next weekend. Koiranen GP's Matthew Parry was third.

ART Grand Prix and new Sahara Force India F1 Development driver Alfonso Celis. Jr started from reverse pole. The Mexican made a good start to retain the lead into Turn One. Ghiotto was clearly fired up: the Italian started from P4 and passed Celis. Jr into Turn 2 to take the lead. Carlin's Jann Mardenborough who started from the front row was not so lucky; a slow start meant he fell into the pack and he received contact which sent the Brit running wide and into an early retirement.

It all happened at the start for Vandoorne: the Belgian driver made a great getaway from P2 as Pierre Gasly had a more difficult jump from pole position. Behind the leading duo, Raffaele Marciello kept third place ahead of Norman Nato and Alex Lynn. Vandoorne was able to quickly build a 2s gap to Gasly, keeping in mind that he had to make his medium tires last for as long as possible before switching to soft compounds. Behind him, Marciello was able to pass a slower Gasly at Turn 1 for P2.
