Whitmarsh hopes Hamilton returns soon  Martin Whitmarsh has paved the way for Lewis Hamilton to return to McLaren after completing a "gap year" at Mercedes.

Picking up on Hamilton's comments to Sky Sports News on Thursday in which the 2008 World Champion likened his 2013 switch as "almost like leaving home and going travelling for a bit", the McLaren team boss confirmed that he would happily welcome the team's soon-to-be-former-protege back into the fold.

"We'd have him back, yes," Whitmarsh told Rachel Brookes. "So let's hope it's just a gap year." More ...

FIA plans two DRS zones at most F1 events  The FIA is committed to providing two DRS zones at as many tracks as possible next year to ensure that rule changes do not result in a reduction in overtaking.

The governing body announced at the United States Grand Prix that for next year drivers will only be able to activate DRS in practice and qualifying in the designated overtaking zones used in the race.

Although that move prompted suggestions that teams could opt for a set-up that did not make DRS effective, the FIA has moved to deter them away for that. More ...

The grid was shaken up a bit today: on top of Cecotto moving from Carlin to Arden, Stephane Richelmi and Mitch Evans moved to DAMS whilst Kevin Mirocha tested at iSport and Rio Haryanto moved to Lotus GP. Yesterday’s fastest man Marcus Ericsson was at the wheel of a Scuderia Coloni car for this second day, Sergio Canamasas moved to Trident, and Ramon Piniero to Carlin. Finally, Fabio Leimer returned to Racing Engineering. More ...
Opinion: Will 2013 be IndyCar's last?  I’ve been laying low for the last few days. There’s been a lot of information to absorb.

Many of you have told me over the years that what you appreciate about my writing is that it’s not off-the-cuff and automatically attacking or pessimistic; rather, I tend to look at the big picture of issues and respond to them rationally and fairly. It’s a reputation that I deeply appreciate and take very seriously.

So, with everything that’s been going on lately, I’ve been trying not to be rash. I’ve been taking a step back and doing a lot of reading, absorbing, and processing. More ...

Red Bull chose against new alternator in Austin  (GMM)  Red Bull chose not to use a new specification of alternator last weekend in Austin, it has emerged.

Engine supplier Renault's Magneti Marelli units have been troublesome in 2012, and Red Bull team figures were scathing last weekend when Mark Webber had to retire from the US grand prix.

At the Circuit of the Americas, designer Adrian Newey referred to the alternator as a "ticking time bomb".

"It has been on the Renault engine since about 2005 and it has been failing since 2005 as well," he said. More ...

Sauber replaces Kobayashi with Gutierrez and hires Frijns
Esteban Gutierrez
The Sauber F1 Team has finalized its line-up for the 2013 season: Esteban Gutierrez is confirmed as the team’s second race driver. The 21-year old Mexican will be driving alongside Nico Hülkenberg (GER). Robin Frijns, from the Netherlands, who is only two days younger than Esteban, has been taken on board as the team’s test and reserve driver.

Gutierrez began his career in karting. He raced in the Formula BMW USA series in 2007, where he finished the runner-up, and then went on to win the Formula BMW Europe crown a year later. After a spell in the Formula 3 Euro Series, he switched to the GP3 Series in 2010 and stormed to the championship title with five race wins. Two seasons in GP2 followed, the second of which in 2012 saw him collect three victories and finish third in the standings. Gutierrez was given his first chance to test for the BMW Sauber F1 Team in 2009 and further opportunities have followed since then. His most recent outing in the Sauber C31-Ferrari was at the Young Driver Days test in Abu Dhabi on 7th and 8th November. More ...
NASCAR TV audience smallest in 5 years  UPDATE After an uptick last year, NASCAR's Chase For the Cup fell back to record-low levels. The 2012 Chase For the Cup averaged a 2.7 U.S. rating and 4.2 million viewers on ESPN and ABC, down 13% in ratings and 12% in viewership from last year (3.1, 4.763M), and flat in ratings and down 7% in viewership from 2010 (2.7, 4.494M). The 2.7 rating is tied with 2010 as the lowest ever for the Chase For the Cup (dates back to 2004). Complete historical viewership for the Chase was not available, but it is likely that this year's edition ranks as the least-viewed ever. Of the nine Chase races that can be compared to last year, eight had a decline in ratings and all nine had declines in viewership. Year-to-year comparisons were not available for the season-opener from Chicago, as last year's version of the race was rained out. Compared to the equivalent 2010 race, however, the Chicago opener was also down. The highest rating of the Chase was a 3.2 for the Talladega and Charlotte races. Talladega ranked as the most-viewed race, with 5.113 million viewers. The Loudon and Dover races were the lowest rated of the season, each earning an all-time Chase record low 2.2. The Loudon was as the least-viewed of the season, with 3.517 million viewers. Sports Media Watch More ...

Ford's new 1-liter 3-cylinder engine
Spirit Airlines would have a field day with this.

Ford’s new 3-cylinder engine is so small it can fit into a piece of carry-on luggage.

At least its aluminum block is.

A team from Ford brought the heart of the smallest engine it makes to the security checkpoint at Detroit Metro airport in a roll-on bag, put it in a tray and ran it through the X-ray machine to demonstrate just how tidy it is. More ...

Marcus Ericsson tops Day 1 in Jerez
Marcus Ericsson
Marcus Ericsson put his experience and driving skills to good use today at the wheel of 2012 Champions DAMS car as he topped the timing sheet in Jerez in a trouble free afternoon session. Earlier in the morning, it was Felipe Nasr at Carlin who lead the way.

The final GP2 Series post-season test session opened today in foggy conditions and it was red flagged within the first thirty minutes as visibility was challenging at turns 6 and 7. When the morning session resumed ten minutes later, the track conditions were still a bit tricky and many drivers opted to wait in the garages until the sun made a much awaited appearance. Jolyon Palmer at the wheel of a Lotus GP car claimed the early top spot ahead of Stephane Richelmi (Trident). More ...
Coca-Cola sponsors Lotus with energy drink brand  (GMM)  Lotus has ended a long period of speculation by announcing that Coca-Cola is entering formula one as a sponsor.

It had been rumored that McLaren could secure the deal, but in fact Lotus said Coca-Cola, the iconic soft drinks brand, will place the logo of its Swedish energy drink Burn on its 2013 car.

Like reigning world champion Red Bull's market-leading drink, Burn is a high sugar, high caffeine energy drink involved in extreme sports marketing including snowboarding, skiing and skateboarding. More ...

Conor Daly looking to keep F-1 dream alive  Everything about Formula One's inaugural weekend at the Circuit of Americas track in Austin, Texas, was perfect in the eyes of promising young American racer Conor Daly of Noblesville.

The facility was immaculate, the action dramatic, the interest high.

And yet, there was something missing in this sport dependant on sponsorship.

"The number of people who came up to me and said, 'You're our next American F-1 driver,' was huge, and many of them are worth hundreds of millions of dollars," he said. "That's all great.

"But honestly, it doesn't mean a thing until someone steps up and gets behind one of us Americans."

Scott Speed has been the only U.S. driver in F-1 since Michael Andretti in 1993, and he lasted only a couple of seasons. More ...

Brazilian IndyCar drivers trying stock car racing  Some of Brazil's IndyCar drivers are spending their time off from the open-wheel series racing stock cars back home. It turns out their vacation pastime hasn't been as much fun as they might have expected. Rubens Barrichello and Tony Kanaan have struggled so far during their guest appearances in Brazil's main stock car series, and three-time Indy 500 champion Helio Castroneves is expected to face some of the same difficulties when he makes his debut next month.

Barrichello and Kanaan said they didn't expect to be contending for victories right away, and knew that it would be hard to make the transition from open-wheels to stock cars. They also said they knew there would be some rough racing involved, but apparently the bumping and banging they've experienced was more than they expected. More ...

NASCAR Issues Decal Rules Changes for 2013, IndyCar clueless  UPDATE Why doesn’t IndyCar mandate the drivers name on the upper 6” of the front and back of the rear wing?  It would not diminish sponsor branding at all and would allow fans to know which driver is driving which car.  Now unless a TV viewer, spectator, or fan has a favorite driver and knows which car, or is very knowledgeable aficionado of IndyCar, it is near impossible to find the drivers name on the car even when it is stationary a few feet away.  Again, NASCAR is doing what is necessary to keep the fans they have and attract new ones while IndyCar continues to fail on marketing it’s drivers.

11/17/12 When the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rolls out their "sixth generation" stock cars at Daytona next February, teams will be sporting a different look as NASCAR announced new rules concerning decal placement for the 2013 season.

Among the changes with be the placement of the drivers last name at the top of the windshield and allowing a primary sponsor logo on the back of the roof behind the car number. The car number will also be placed on the front and rear bumper of the car. More ...
